On/to me, this starts off like an inflatable pool toy, I absolutely swear! Blow up arm floaties that kids wear to keep safe, that stretchy inflatable RUBBER. To my boyfriend, it smells like “a very angry flower,” whatever that means lol!
Slowly it begins turning a hint leathery, like newly made suede covered in lilac dust, up close. This lasted just for a few minutes – but this phase is lovely, very feminine and very floral. Then is fades into a semi sweet, gently spiced white pepper like smell, which in the past I’ve associated w/ cyclamen blends (in much cheaper scents – maybe those weren’t so bad afterall quality-wise. I think the note just does nothing for me). The sillage is VERY SOFT to my nose, so the votes surprise me.
Odd! I wouldn’t buy it but it’s certainly been an amusing experience in my fragrance journey.

Most of Pierre Guillaume’s creation, whether floral, fruity, woody or gourmand, bear his mark and are definitely easy to match to his nose.
Psychotrope is the one that surprised me as it is quite different. And quite excellent! I never expected from PG a scent so fresh and so not fresh at the same time. Lets starts with one thing I am sure of, it bears the mark of the brands universal elegance. But then… On the one hand Psychotrope is clean, slightly soapy, and slightly vintage. But the more you inhale, the more vintage and heavy it gets. From a brisk fragrance, it becomes more settled, powdery, and a lot more leathery. It changes like air before the storm- heavier, more dense. It makes me think of contrasting images- a holiday morning by the sea, an evening in a theatre, I am a bit confused how to classify this one really.
Not sure if I would enjoy wearing it every day, it is a bit too confusing for me, but an interesting smell nevertheless.

The most interesting PG scent I’ve tried so far and feel is original enough for a full bottle purchase. Usually I can make up my mind pretty fast about whether a scent is for buying or not but in this case, I can’t quite decide if I like it enough yet.
If this were a colour it would be a jet black. The leather is very prominent here and with it comes an almost astringent quality. The other notes are muted to my nose and it stays a very clean scent. Sillage is close to the body for me and longevity is good, about 8 hours and although faint, still present.
For me, I find it unique and intriguing, no frills, no fuss or muss in this one.
I won’t recommend this as a gift unless the recipient adores “different” scents and I won’t recommend blind buying this for sure. But definitely worth sampling.

Psychotrope smells like the perfume of a poisonous, languid exotic plant. The character Poison Ivy from the Batman series comes to mind.
It smells a lot like datura flowers in humid weather. It’s milky, toxic-smelling, sharp, and eventually it becomes soapy.
It’s very strange: not altogether pleasant, but definitely enigmatic and alluring. It’s one of those perfumes that I keep sniffing repeatedly to see if I like it or not, and in the end I can’t decide.

I love heliotrope. Thank goodness I didn’t blind buy this one, or I would have been gutted. As it leaves the phial and hits skin, it smells exactly, and I do mean EXACTLY like Breath Of God, by Lush, latterly B Never too Busy 2 b beautiful. Where Breath of God mutates to smokiness, Psychotrope hangs onto it’s sharpness with killer claws, and just will not mellow on my skin. Not so much leather as skin tight PVC which has been worn without a good clean. Sticky, sharp, acidic, a back of the throat, headache inducing, cat scratch fever which is rivalled only by that horrible australian orange power bathroom cleaner, which forces you to clean all over again to get rid of the pong. The Psycho bit of the name hits the nail on the head. Gimp mask in a bottle. Not for me.

    Psychotrope
Begins with the scent of stale candies but then it gets weird
I could still smell it after the end of a long day despite attempting to wash off several times and by then it had a weedy floral quality to it: may be marigold
I imagine a child playing in the sun with big hats picking all kinds of random things from outdoor adventures/ mostly wet weeds picked not so long after a terrible rain storm and mixing them in a plastic bag together with windex and viola!
If you in it for the name like i was you may be in for a stomach turning surprise

Psychotrope fits this mysterious, rainy spring mood I’ve been feeling for the past week or so. I love what I think to be the name, after looking it up in French: “a substance having an effect on the psyche,” “antidepressant,” and “hallucinogenic.” The top is all green, jasmine, and a kind of freshness that smells like the rain outside my window. The florals then come forward, jasmine, cyclamen, and violet, followed by an effortless drydown to a leather base, almost reading as vinyl, with a subtle hint of musk. These unusual notes complement each other harmoniously, and despite the dark, strange, leather base, the whole composition reads as elegant and sophisticated. The overall effect is beautiful and unnerving.

Psychotrope makes me think of two things. The first is dousing myself with Donna Karan Gold while sucking on a mouthful of Jolly Rancher candies. The second is that creating something disturbing while coloring within the lines is an artistic challenge. 1970s punk was easy. Find the easily offended, then offend, then gloat. But when you try to keep the garrulousness while staying within the mainstream you can wind up with something along the lines of the American Idol “Rocker.” It’s an image of rock in the same sense that The Sound of Music is an image of the Second World War.
Psychotrope does veer close to the mainstream. The question is there: could this be any other department store perfume, just sold in niche venues? A mistake? Laziness? Good questions. I find the leather/flower misdirection very much along the lines of Etat Libre’s Vierges et Toreros. Not so much flower as sci-fi candied fruit vinyl.
Psychotrope successfully sends a shiver through the mainstream for those attuned to its particular frequency. It’s deceptively close to normal. It’s like Dior’s Dune in that what registers as perfectly normal flips to the jarringly alien when you look at it askance. The camouflage of normalcy falls away and Psychotrope becomes frightening.

I only wear it with black, elegant and simple dresses, high heels, black leather and rouge noir lipstick. it is cruel and seducing, elegant but loud, simple, familiar and confusing, arrogant but inviting, quite a mess and tidy at the same time. it’s the ambivalence that makes it so attractive, decent cyclamen on the wayside combined with the sleek, soft leather of black overknee-boots and the whip that hits. perfect for all part-time dominas with style;-)

Buttery soft leather handbag with a lilac powder scented hankie tucked inside. So unique I had to keep sniffing. Like a sweet green leaf, a waterlily perhaps. So different, yet familiar. The memory of it tickles the back of my mind: I have smelled this scent before but can’t place it. My mind is abuzz.
Is it the cyclamen? Sweet green floral. A beautiful boquet of cyclamen, lilac and violets. Fresh picked and warm from the sun. Heavenly.

Starts out airy, watery, green and soft, with lots of aquatic/ozone/calone/cyclamen aldehyde notes, reminding me of a tulip, or the cut stems of iris and daffodils on a cool morning, things that are mostly green and dripping full of sap. Over time the cyclamen blooms, creating a shimmering transparent floral mist. The other flowers stay far in the background, creating an almost imperceptible curtain against which the cyclamen and wet green stems do their thing. I really don’t smell much, if any of the leather that’s supposed to be present.
The scent is pretty much linear with moderate sillage, and lasts about 5-6 hours. I generally don’t like aquatic scents, but if I had to have a wearable one in my rotation, Psychotrope would fill the bill.

omg, this is such a BEAUTY.
I chose this one because of the lilac and I did not get disappointed.
There is a fruit-like splash at the beginning than the leather slowly blends with the flowers.
    Adorable!

I really wanted to love this one. It sounded so unexpected and interesting. However, all I got on the actual sampling was sticky vinyl and synthetic plastic smoke over bright florals. A mess. This must be chemistry specific. Try before buying.

I have 3 words for this fragrance: unique, unexpected, creative.
It does have a psychotrope effect …it blows my mind. It takes me to a different level of excitement.
As creation, this is innovative: just leather and flowers …harmoniously together? Unheard!
I might not be able to wear it but i would love having a bottle just for my personal pleasure. This is something I could call art and enjoy humbled.
Regarding the notes: Jasmine poupre, cyclamen, lilac wood, violet, musk and black leather.
Not very complex but it has a great balance. The leather is the main player, of course. The musk and the lilac wood are intimately welded to it, bringing something special to such a well known note.
The floral notes are hard to define in the opening, but they become more evident in the dry down, especially the violets.
The jasmine has strength and stands up near the leather greatly and comes across more like a creamy white flower.
Gorgeous dry down: soapy (just a hint of violets), creamy, musky, leathery. It feels like a pair of beautiful leather gloves you don’t want to take off…. Dreamy.
Perfectly said Mr. Guillaume: ‘ a jasmine with leather petals”.
    8.6/10
PS After 4 hours I can say without doubts this is the most sensual leather I have ever smelled.

I agree with F_A below, my immediate reaction to this fragrance definitely was WOW! what a strong, original, nose-catching opening! as soon as the perfume leaves the nozzle and touches the skin, it’s like a blast of surprise reaches your nose! 🙂 for me, this was the first thing i had tried from this house, and even though i’m not sure if I’d purchase a full-size, I am already in love with the bold gutsyness of this house. absolutely unique, and although sharp and surprising at first, it eventually dries down to a wearable and pleasant soapy leathery scent. too bad it doesn’t last that long. somewhere between the opening and end, i also can feel a tinge of medicinal quality. but overall, a scent that i recommend everyone at least try! it stands out amongst my pile of samples to try! 😉

WOW! This IS a flower with leather petals from Mr. P. Guillaume’s vision!
Psychotrope is one of the most exceptional fragrances I have ever tested. It totally captivated me!
Psychotrope smells like a new suede bag where someone just sprayed a drop of good flowery fragrance. The smell of leather in this fragrance is so prominent, so natural and so strong that all other fragrances I’ve ever tested, which were supposed to be “leathery”, faded against this leather masterpiece. It is dark and fresh at the same time, very elegant and absolutely unique. Equally good for men and for women.
    Bravo Mr. P. Guillaume!
