I am SSSSOOOOO glad that I bought this frag a couple years ago. I went online looking for a bottle when I first heard about it, well the notes made me curious soI ordered it. I am wearing it today (the first time in a long time) and it smells so good. This frag is smoky, with a masculine rose and slight incense, leather undertone. The tobacco and woods are there too well blended with the smoke and rose with a dash of incense. This isn’t an incensey eastern style rose smelling frag at all. This is blended beautiful and done for well for western noses. It lasted all day 8:30AM til 6PM and I am still smelling it. It shines in this cool 50 degree weather and I smelled in the office thru the day. So performance is very good. This is backup bottle worthy. If you see it you better get it. It will fetch a pretty penny when D/C’d or unavailable. It is a masculine frag done well but a woman can probably pull it off if she is strong and confident. Happy Sniffing

This gives me a vibe of like a leather Jacket cassanova type whos rough exterior hides his sensuality or even a Saudi Prince its got a good arab fragrance longetivity and quality. Very sensual rose but definately masculine wish the bottle was a bit more appealing but aye its the juice inside that counts and this stuff is a 10/10 all around

Ninche fragrance class for affordable price. I’ll put it next to Tuscan leather, Cuir ottoman, Encense suede, or some Amouage smoky compositions. Why spend silly money, when you can have it cheaper?

This cologne is simply Outstanding and a Masterpiece in every way! It’s a very masculine scent and I get rose and very serious leather. This really has a Tuscan Leather vibe. Projection is fantastic but non offensive with just two sprays, longevity is excellent and the smells lasts for 12 + hours and I can smell it on my wrist 24 hours later and my jacket for days. If this was bottled by Tom Ford or Creed it would easily sell for a much higher price point. Unfortunately, this juice has become scarce and if you can find it, you won’t be disappointed. I absolutely love this and give it a 10 rating in every category. Brilliantly done DSQUARED!

I got this a few days ago and I must say that the performance is very good. The scent itself is a very calming rose scent with a smooth leather backbone. Sillage is heavy upon first spray but it settles to a nice scent bubble in about 30 minutes after application. It only becomes a skin scent after about the 7 hour mark. Longevity is very good. I get about 12 hours plus with this one. On clothes the longevity is phenomenal. I get whiffs of the fragrance two days after applying it on my clothes.
I layered this with Franck Olivier’s Oud Touch and it was just amazing. The brooding darkness of the olibanum from the Oud Touch mixed very well with the rose and leather in this one making it a very majestic composition. Both fragrances have very good performance so the longevity was phenomenal and it developed into this very smooth leather dry down that is to die for.
I will give this fragrance a total of 4.5/5. It is that good.

Simplistically brilliant! DSQUARED Potion Royal Black to me is rose done right! Do not be fooled, this is a rose scent! The opening of this fragrance sees our stars; the rose, pimento, and incense just hold hands and skip to the tune of floral, spicy smoke, directly to leather and citrus town. This scent is so well blended and unfolds itself like a classic mystery novel. This fragrance is rich, robust, and elegant at the same time. All the elements of this composition are present, just enough to be detected and accent this wonderful rose scent. As for the rose, the rose to me is a fresh rose, it isn’t too jammy it is just very fresh. The transition from the opening to the mid is seamless. We get a light tobacco and leather accord that blends directly to a creamy, yet slightly musky, woody, oud base. This scent is truly a potion because it is magical. To me this is meant to be worn at night at moments when you really mean to make your convictions felt.

5 drops rose syrup + 3 drops smoky incense + 1 drop pimento.
A very elegant middle eastern smell. The rose is predominant making it lean toward “unisex”.
    Romantic & formal.

Strong smoky incense rose …. nice fragrance
Lasts all day, 10+ hours…on clothes even more, for days.
So don’t overspray, more than 3 sprays is overkill for me.

  20. :

I’m not keen on the pimento (chilli). To me, pimento turns this deep, smouldering, sexy scent into one that is fiery. Now, anything that is too spicy is not my “cup of tea”, and this is no exception. I waited a long while before reviewing Potion Royal Black, because I blind-bought it and was in love with the idea of what it might be. When the reality didn’t match-up, I didn’t want to admit “FAIL”, so I tested it at regular intervals to make sure my perception hadn’t changed. As a matter of fact, it has, but not for the better – I realise Potion Royal Black IS deep and niche-quality and everything everyone else mentioned – but the fiery pimento is not to my taste. And, while I don’t like to draw perfume categories, it is masculine.

    Best.male.rose.ever.period.
Okay, maybe just my opinion but seriously, this is superb quality. I am far from a fan of rose, but this is the first time I’ve come across a rose scent that maintains freshness this way. Best described as a leathery rose with incense. Slightly sweet, slightly dry, slightly dark but contemporary all of the time. Masculine florals, spices, romantic leather, woods, some tobacco and incense – this cocktail is more intriguing than it sounds. Complex and kinda “mysterious”. Great for a cold night of dining, dating or similar.
Longevity is excellent, projection very good and if you’re lucky enough you can find this niche quality product at a very reasonable price.

‘Just receive my package of DSquared Potion Royal Black today. Blind bought this perfume and my first impression was the smell is different from my other perfume collections. It smells wood and rose petal incense. For me it can be unisex. Very unique and well blended.

I bought this perfume recently and have used it a few times now. Somehow i’m only finding it to be very much candy like in terms of scent. I’m just finding it a bit too sweet for my liking. Might try it another time over the weekend but guess i’m not a huge fan. If anyone wants to buy the bottle off me let me know. 🙂

No, I don’t think it is too masculine for a woman to pull off. It’s much better than Oud Ispahan smell-wise.

Hi guys, I’m a woman who likes dark, strong, erotic fragrances. Would this be considered too masculine for me? Does it scream “for men?” I want a rose scent with a combination of oud, leather, incense or woods. Oud Ispahen was just a little too much for me, too harsh, but I want a niche scent vibe.

Oh my god what a great fragrance
For the first hour you get rose soap after this time mark soft smooth leather kicks in with the woods and makes it a lovely scent

I’ve heard it is discontinued can someone confirm? It doesnt appear on dsquared website

Potion Royal Black isn’t completely was I was hoping for, but it was just so close to being there. This is only my second experience with rose based men’s fragrance, the other being Ferrari Essence Oud, which I have really grown to enjoy.
So, I really enjoy most of this frag- the dark balsamic-y incense is so beautiful, I love catching whiffs of this in the air. However, the part I dont care much for is the overpowering rose at the beginning. It reminds me of scented facial tissues my grandmother had. This part to me makes it harder for a man to wear. Or maybe just this man. Who knows. When i want to wear this, i spray my arms, then lightly wash them off. This takes the assertive rose almost completely out, but leaves the rest in, giving a really nice skin scent.
Projection from the bottle seems huge, and longevity is there long after i wash, so thats a plus also.
I would buy a whole bottle right now if the rose weren’t SO strong in this one. Still, I’d give it a solid 8/10

    A dark smoky-spicy rose
This one was a big surprise. I was really nervous, so to speak, after ordering this one – blind, as always. I pretty much buy blind always since I don’t (or rather didn’t-it’s a lot easier now) have access to sample any of these perfumes (and I hate going to malls). I always go by some basic guidelines. Most important is usually the notes/accords. Besides that I look for the house & the perfumer(s) behind the creation, year of creation/release, and of course user reviews (on the popular perfume forums). I follow a handful of key reviewers, simply due to the fact that lot of our tastes match and what we find appealing, how each perfume reacts on us seems quite similar. And it has never failed me, except on a couple of rare occasions. But when it came to this perfume, most of my key reviewers hadn’t reviewed it. (I found a few other great reviews though and they were spot on). But anyway, I was unsure. And there were quite varying opinions among all the other users (as is the case always). I was picking up another dSquared2 scent (Potion) the same day when I saw a tester bottle of this at a good price. So, I had to get it. (you know how that is)
I could pick up the rose and the incense even before I pulled the bottle out of the pack. This thing explodes in your face as soon as you hit the trigger. It is thick, dark, syrupy and intense. It’s heavily spicy and resinous. After about 15 mins or so it tones down a bit to reveal it’s structure. A hint of citrus at the top, almost slightly bitter-ish – probably due to the pimento. I get quite a few spicy nuances – nutmeg, hints of cinnamon and a boat-load of pepper. The heart notes reveal themselves pretty much at the beginning itself. A thick, not too sweet, syrupy rose and divine frankincense. Smelling very heady and smoky. Blending really well with all the spices and a brilliantly realistic dry, non-sweet, tobacco accord. This is definitely the best stage of this fragrance. And it lasts a really long time. There’s a decent, but very generic, oud-leather accord here too quite reminiscent of Montale’s Aoud Leather and Dueto’s Golden Boy. The drydown, which arrives some 8-10 hours later, is slightly musky with hints of powdery rose and a dusty-woody accord. This stage too lasts a long time. Another 6-8 hours easily.
Projection, sillage and longevity are on the higher side. Really solid. Go easy on the trigger. It easily lasts 24 hours on my skin and for many days on my clothes. Overall this is really well made. If not for the generic oud-leather accord and seemingly simple drydown this would have been great. Not groundbreaking but definitely good to wear (only in cold weather). Try it if you are looking for a dark smoky-spicy rose scent.
    8/10

Easily one of the best affordable alternatives to Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir. It has that rich manly rose that reminds you of that one uncle you have that always likes to gamble and wear expensive suits. The scent screams New Year celebrations at high end hotels with friends and family and the odor of vodka in the air. And surprisingly for the price point, DSquared retains a niche-quality edge to this masterpiece.

The best way to describe this in one sentance: rose petals thrown on a pile of ashes. Incensey smokey scent with slightly rosy undertones. Call this a dirty rose because it is so smokey and ashy. Much more masculine than unisex. Smoke/incense to my nose masked the smoothness id usually associate with leather (dont detect the leather in here) or florals Id associate with rose. If you like rose scents, try Rose Malaki for something unique (initially jammy then light oud/tobacco) or Declaration D’Un Soir for a fresh/sparkling masculine rose. If you liked the latter recommendations, I do not think you will be excited as some reviewers might have you be.

What a great fragrance. Got this on a blind swap. I had only heard about it but i was not looking to buy it at the time. But i agreed based on the notes. And it is the best fragrance addition I’ve made to my collection so far this year. Right from the sprayer the Rose in this is strong, almost too feminine. I was almost dissapointed. But spray it on your skin and wait just a couple minutes and the masculine side comes out. The Leather, the incense, the woods, and some smokiness, all hover around a very sweet smelling rose. Amazing. This is what i expected Lyric Man from Amouage to smell like. I wore this on Valentines day. This is my romantic, seductive night out fragrance. When i want to be a little daring. Great offering from DSquared.

    Potion Royal Black
After spraying few times in retail shop I bought the bottle online quite cheap.
I think it should have been called “potion ROSE royal”
A fantastic rose scent , one of my favourites. I would agree with Santiago below , a bucket of deep red wet roses. The opening is a blast of roses combo with incense and gentle leather. The other notes cashmere wood, musk and guaiac wood are a bit softer but are there. Not sure about pimento, I don’t know how it smells. One day a applied 5-6 sprays on my body around 8:30 am. While being in the office, few friends and colleagues were asking what is this nice smell ? Did the clean-lady cleaned the whole office in the morning? At that moment I felt very happy that was my Potion Royal Black.
The projection was about 3 meters. When I went home 9pm the rose , soft smoke and incense notes were still on my skin. That make 12 hours longevity minimum. After 3 hours , midnight the scent was still there. So , at least on my skin this fantastic perfume is a beast. However, this is just my nose, and the perfume has been applied on my skin. I do recommend this EDP to everyone. Not sure if the negative reviews are from fake samples or bad batches. Even my signature Epic man doesn’t have excellent marks (due to high price).
However, it doesn’t mean that this will b the same scent in every single person all around the world. Just my skin, my PH my review.
    I hope it helps.
    Conclusion:
    Batch: 00D82BE1
    Price online: 50 euros , April -3 , 2016
    Scent: 10
    Longevity :10
    Sillage:10
    Overall 10
    Cheers,

To be honest, my bottle that arrived last month from Perfume Emporium (Australia, I think) via Amazon smells fantastic but the projection and longevity is a big let down. I do not believe that there is a fake on this one being very underrated but I think, it has been watered down a bit or mine was not kept properly by this online store. Those who claimed it has great projection and longevity, will you please write down your bottle and box batch codes here (update/edit review).
Projection on my skin is 1st hour then 3-4 hours skin scent. Or maybe this frag is one of those that wearer gets anosmic as I received compliments when I can’t smell it at all. Then again on my clothes, it doesn’t stay its strength compared to other rose Oud, leather or Oud based that I have: Ferrari Essence Oud, Yurman Limited, Golden Boy, TF NdN, Armaf Club Intense, Gadolphin, Mancera Gold Aoud etc.
    Batch code 100ml – 20D59BE1 (May 2013)

@Maxvonembs – as others have said, it sounds like what you got was almost certainly a fake / heavily damaged product. This fragrance will last over 10 hours on my skin, which typically struggles to hang onto the vast majority of them for more than 6-7 hours, and projects moderate-heavily for a good portion of that time. This is not a weak juice whatsoever.
That, and your description of the scent is nothing like what I (and most other people) have gotten. It’s impossible to miss the rose, incense, and leather notes which are the key to this fragrance, and they are at the forefront of this scent for almost the entire duration that it will be on your skin.

  41. :

    3 out of 5

@Max, you probably found a gone bad bottle.. I once tried this scent, still remember leaving a tray, and some girls noticing it literally from near 8 meters of distance lol
    by the way:
at a first instance I didnt like it, because i never tried rose scents before. then it grew on me and loved it.
as said above, girls liked it, i was kind of embarassed at first because of the scent, but then noticed they smiled and started to flirt. amazing.
notes i detected were: rose, incense, and something fresh and watery (maybe oud?). It reminds me of a bucket of roses in a water bowl, plus some background incense. quite elegant, can figure this with both a tuxedo or even with black jeans, t shirt and a rocker leather jacket.
wish i still could find it, cannot find it anywhere these days.

Hmmmm @below review ive got two bottles purchases awhile back mine stays an average 7to8 hours with mod to heavy projection maybe your sample was probably messed up or something.

  43. :

Absolute rip off in every way. This fragrance has either been reformulated or it is just complete rubbish. Either way it is trash and I would suggest that you DO NOT buy, unless you have 40 or 50 quid lying around to throw out the window.
My god the LUNACY I have read here about this fragrance:
Tuscan Leather. . .PLEASE. The cap from my Tuscan Leather has better performance than twenty sprays of Potion Royal Black.
“Incense and tobacco”. . .REALLY? Where?
“Rose of the Heirloom Variety”. . .Must be the ultra rare invisible variety!
“Atmospheric gem”. . .I will reserve comment, no I won’t. If the atmosphere is perfumers alcohol, then I suppose it is quite the gem.
When I get a small wif, the fragrance smells okay, but smelling it is quite a challenge because it is so extremely faint that it is almost non-existent.
I do not like leaving bad reviews, but many times samples are not available so the only option is blind buys. I firmly believe that many fragrances are released at one potency and quickly reformulated which makes more sense then most people think. Once the “HYPE TRAIN” is rolling, the money pours in. Aroma chemicals are not free even when purchased by the drum. Many are outrageously expensive. I worked in the industry for many years.
Before I review a fragrance I wear it for several days, on clothes, hair, skin. I try to be as objective as possible. Even though I do not buy into the “bottle must open up when new” tale, I spray a new fragrance 40 to 50 times or more before I post a review.
I own many fragrances, some awesome, some just okay, and some that are so terrible that I can’t believe it. Potion Royal Black is at the BOTTOM of the list. SAVE YOUR MONEY! Buy a bottle or two of Bentley Intense!

A fantastic smoky rosy leathery blend that is utterly mysterious and unisex. I feel like a movie villain who wears dark eyeliners. It goes well with dark clothing on a cold day or night. One of my favorites.

A fantastic rose/leather combination that gives the olfactory illusion of a dark rose oud. Another great example of a lasting and exceptional fragrance for 1/5 the cost of the other niche brands that charge for a name and a nice bottle. This is an excellent release from Dsquared.

  46. :

    5 out of 5

    Absolutely to try!!!!
It’s mainstream/designer fragrance that could be very similar to a niche one…….but with a cheaper price!!!
It’s dense but not thick, it’s strong but not heady (don’t give more than two spritzes however, it could be too strong!), there is a good development, the rose softens the harsh note of the oud, of the frankincense, of the leather and also the dry note of the guaiac wood.
Very very elegant, very good in winter and for the night.
I prefer this to Incense Oud by Kilian, more harsh and bitter.
However if you like oud, franckincense and leather it’s an absolutely must…..especially for this fantastic price!!!
    Many thanks to Veronika……

this one, wow. it is a very intense experience, and at first spray i was a little taken back at how much is going on and how much depth i got from this. the rose and incense are intertwined straight away, projecting quite strongly as the leathery note dances on your skin. in the first hour or so as the notes swirl around and evolve, i started to notice a bit more of a woody note, however the incense, rose, and leather remained the most prominent notes.
this one takes a bit of time to appreciate and really understand, and having only worn it twice i’m still getting a better understanding of it. someone in the comments made a reference to this giving creed / by kilian a run for their money, and i’m inclined to agree.. asides from the actual smell of this juice, it has excellent projection and longevity to boot. this is a fantastic niche-quality fragrance at a designer price.

This is a real change from DSQUARED², if this fragrance was put in another bottle…I wouldn’t believe that DSQUARED² created this juice.
Potion Royal Black has a sexy rose/leathery blend with a smokey incense woodsy vib which makes this a high quality fragrance. I have sampled several frag’s with similar notes..this juice gives Kilian or Creed a run for their money. Even the price tops Versace Pour Homme Oud Noir.
After spraying this on my skin the first note I pick up is rose immediately followed by an amazing smokey/tobacco vib. After this juice settles, On my skin…I love this juice because there’s a hint of sweet tone probably coming from the rose and leather combined.
Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting over 8hrs
    Overall,
This fragrance is a complex BEAST yet not overbearing. A classic aroma wearing a tuxedo. A definite high quality juice. Also a true GEM I would recommend in a heartbeat!! 10/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  52. :

    3 out of 5

Wow. I am shocked. I was expecting something a little different. This is everything but linear that’s for sure. Now I do agree with the fresh rose on initial blast, but the middle dry down this is a masculine fragrance all the way, don’t let the rose flower fool you. The rose is the most expensive flower in the world for a reason. The dark smoky leather which is like the same leather in Tuscan leather but just of lower quality mixed with the rose is something that seems so common but in this composition it seems like the original of it. A great frGrance I’m glad it’s in my collection and for 100ml shipped on beautyspin for like $40 can’t beat it, smelling like a niche offering for that price. The bottle suits the fragrance, it’s dark, woody, leather rose and smoke.
    Edit update***
I been wearing this for a couple days. All in all I like what’s being accomplished here. It does remind me it’s a designer fragrance from time to time by its quality and smell. I think this one is a little hyped for what it is, I may be saying this bc it got me wanting it blindly and I expected more. More woods and more smoke. All around 7.5/10 not bad….just not bad.

  53. :

    3 out of 5

I was not expecting much of it since I’m not particularly fond of rose scents but boy this masterpiece just blew me away. Projection and longevity are beastly. It doesn’t smell too rosy or feminine because the leather and woods are equally strong here. I’m pretty sure there is oud somewhere in the composition although it is not listed here. The most surprising aspect of this great flanker is its compliment factor, every single time I wore it I got visceral reactions. It has a perfect ying-yang balance to it and if you like strong and dark fragrances this a must try. 9 out 10

    Hi,
    F I N A L L Y………… I found it.
It’s been on my wishlist on and off.
After smelling Lumiere Noire Pour Homme Maison Francis Kurkdjian for men and reading the reviews of Potion Black, I blind-bought it.
After spraying it on my wrist, the first thought I had after ± 20 minutes was Lumiere Noire Pour Homme Maison Francis Kurkdjian for men meets La Yuqawam Homme Rasasi for men 
where the rose-part is detectable when arm is stretched and when you bring your nose to your wrist the incense and leather are there.
Now, almost 19 hrs later……….. still the scent is very much detectable and……….. I like it very much.
I wore Prada Luna Rossa Extreme.
3 Sprays in neck and chest.
The combination of Prada LRe and Dsquared² BP seems to work out very nice.
In the office where I work you get whiffs of both and they blend well together.

How does one follow up such a well written review as the one before this one? I love this frag so much that I’m compelled to add my two or three cents on the subject.
Im a sucker for dark manly rose scents. I own Club De Nuit Intense by Armaf which is basically NOIR DE NOIR minus $250+, David Yurman’s Limited Edition, Aramis Calligraphy Rose, Shade’s Wood and now DSquared’s Potion Royal Black. Owning these scents gives you an idea of the versatility of rose notes in fragrances. They are undeniably rosy but they aren’t anywhere near copies of each other as far as fragrances go. Each has a very unique take on Rose and Potion is one of my favorites. What makes this different from the others is the Incense, Leather and Rose combo. These notes combine to create a very sensual fragrance. It’s also very niche in terms of the smell, blend, and performance.
As has been mentioned it is very easy to see this scent selling for 5x its asking price and it would probably sell more if that were the case than it does as an affordable designer scent. There are some synthetics used but so what? WIth IFRA rules in play even Niche brands are producing SYNTHETIC scents. The bottom line is the smell and this smells amazing.
Scents like this is what frugal frag heads live to find. Something which should be far more exclusive being sold at an accessible price. And because the availability is so scarce chances are no one will smell like you. I collect fragrances because of gem finds like this.
This will certainly be one of my night out scents as it gets colder which is when this scent, I believe, would fit best. Its a warm, dense, sweet, but masculine take on Rose. I get consistently over 10 hours (i spray on my Tshirts) with great sillage for the first 4 hours. On clothes this will last forever. So give a couple sprays between your chest and your Tshirt and you will be giving off whiffs of this forever…lol…
    Simply put…A wow factor Fragrance.
If u don’t like rose scents this may be one which changes your mind. Its undeniably beautiful.
10/10- This scent is everything I want in a fragrance and is a unicorn compared to the hosts of generic designer scents which all smell the same these days. It gets a 10 because it measures up to the best from the Designer world past and present.

If it were a color, it would be blue-black. If it were an emotion, it would be desire. If it were a genre, it would be Film Noir. If you have wished for a rose fragrance that can’t be construed as being effeminate this is worth a try. I blind bought Potion Royal Black two years ago and have had no regrets. I guess I have been on a rose kick lately, but I just love the concept of DSquared2, both the fragrance and the fashion. The clothing is just behind Ports1961 for me: artful and intriguing, not conniving.
This resinous treasure opens with a rose of the heirloom variety imbued with incense and leather. The three notes seem to transform into one aromatic, ever blooming posy before your nose. Tobacco intercedes immediately thereafter and, smelling something of an unlit cigarette, coaxes the dainty petals into showing their masculine side. Pimento warms the skin and adds just a touch of piquant fermentation. Guaiac and cashmere woods inhabit the base instilling the bouquet with depth and luxury. I did not, to my relief, detect an over-abundance of the ubiquitous bergamot and musk here, but they are present. Overall, once the composition achieves its final form, it holds onto the skin with the tenacity of Japan lacquer and offers excellent projection. There are mossy shades of vintage Chanel Antaeus in its structure, but they are faint chimeras. If you weren’t walking the earth back in the early 1980’s when the original Antaeus was released, and ever wondered what it was like, this would be a reasonable but incomplete study.
Potion Royal Black is an atmospheric gem particularly suitable to late autumn in temperate climates and is worn to its best effect in cool, crisp air. Of course, living in a climate controlled universe (as most of us do), it is possible to turn down the thermostat on a random rainy evening and just spray yourself into a sleepy, rose scented nirvana. I like to take it with me to cosmopolitan cities like New York, London and Berlin the same as to bed. Great for living large, such as evenings out on the town or even when you just want to draw a little extra (positive) attention to yourself, say
