Description

The lush green of ivy forests.

It is the melody of dark green leaves
with gleaming water pearls in the
forest after a summer rain. The
sweetness of damp earth melts into
elegant suave leather. A fantasy of
fine smoke and tobacco complements vibrant amber lasting all day long. Pentachords Verdant was launched in 2011. The nose behind this fragrance is Andy Tauer.

Green, dewy leaves plus a soft mint and bright celery. Mild, gauzy sweetness, like catching a whiff of linden on the breeze. Suede & faintly woodsy drydown. A synthetic natural, if that makes sense. Utterly unique.
A gentle coolness-after-the-rain scent. It’s one of the few fragrances my sensitive-nosed, scent-averse partner actually likes (complimented, even!), though he is able to smell it a room away, while to me it’s a skin scent.

i think i have not recovered from the shock when i discovered that it is discontinued… if there is some good samaritan on this site to send me sample vial, pls do!!! i can send you back something i have.
and this was not just a perfume, it had such strong anti-depressant qualities, as i said in email to mr. tauer…but, well, people weren’t bying it enough to be profitable

It’s a masterpiece. Quite simply, it will rival Andy’s acknowledged masterpieces, L’AIR DE DESERT MAROCAIN and LONESTAR MEMORIES. A new green type… the heartbreaking smell of a freshly rained-upon green forest. Such emotion it gives me! You’re alone in this green forest, marveling at Nature’s beauty and tenderness… but there is something dauntingly scary about THIS much nature; you gradually realize that Nature holds you in no especial preference; she cares about you no more and no less… than she cares about the trees, grasses, bushes and lichens which surround you. It’s easily as green as, say Sisley EAU DE CAMPAGNE, but wheras the Sisley is a sunny day in late spring, VERDANT expresses great beauty… but with an aching longing, like a green forest under a lavender-grey sky in a November twilight. Did you ever see that 1995 Hirokazu Kore-Eda movie called DISTANCE? A group of students are trapped in a lushly green, wet Japanese forest. Beauty… and awe, bordering upon fear at the endless green sprawl.

Very pungent ambroxan combined with greens, dust, mint, soil and earth notes and a hint of watermelon. Then incense, hint of leather and tobacco amped by ambroxan, and something sweet in the drydown.
Not my thing– very masculine on me. This would be an interesting scent though, minus the ambroxan, that really kills it for me. I can’t smell any of the other notes anymore! Its a scrubber with my skin chemistry.

A green minty rooty smell with a strong smell of soil is what I’m getting on first application to my skin. This then settles on your skin smelling like soil with a bit of minty green. Eventually a tobacco note joins with the minty green soil aroma.
Lol…. This is one of those artistic fragrances where you can admire what the creator has done but cannot actually wear it.
Imagine taking a plant from the earth. You get the green smell from the roots as well as the smell of soil sticking to the roots. Well thats what this scent smells like.
To sum up a very interesting scent that is more like art to be admired than something you can actually wear.

Amber, tobacco, ivy, leather and incense- what is there not to love? Pentachord Verdant is complex and intriguing. It reminds me of a piece of art; abstract. Not everyone will appreciate its eccentric personality but you can’t deny its charm. I love it!

Pentachord verdant is a dark horse it’s not like anything I’ve tried before, which is something that Andy Tauer does well and should be proud of.
The opening is a fresh blast of green leaves and the unmistakable scent of ivy encased in a puff of smoke which quickly dissipates. This is quickly backed by a menthol coolness of mint, strangely although this is a green scent the mint doesn’t smell very authentic…if that makes sense? What I mean is it’s not like smelling mint leaves more like a clean, cold, minty sensation. Mint is very evident thoughout and I’m surprised it’s not listed in the notes here.
Then Verdant takes a turn for the earthy and soil like which is not that typical patchouli dirt but somrhting which to my nose is entirely more palatable. The drydown is still lush and green but with sweetness, a hint of leather and tobacco but only a hint this fragrance is not deep but has a lovely mixture of green metallic and earthy notes.
Pentachord Verdant is very interesting stuff…I like it!
The projection is actually good it’s a sneaky one just when it seems very quiet you’ll get a wave of it coming at you.
Doesn’t last on my skin though but worth a sniff for the initial reaction, couldn’t justify buying it but I enjoyed sampling.

On paper, this looks right up my alley. Green, Ivy, Damp Earth, Leather, Tobacco……and it almost is. The last few years, I’ve been gravitating to searching for things that smell of the outdoors. For the most part, this one fits the bill. It opens with some odd but to me great green notes. If it stayed linear to this opening, I would like it all the more. But as it does dry down, a bit of the leather comes into play and also the sweetness, which many here have described as a cotton candy like vibe. I wished the things I liked about the opening didn’t take a backseat as it dries down, but they do. The greenness and damp earth are still there and discernible, just take a backseat to a soft suede like leather and sweet accord.
I’ve also recently tried Andrea Maack’s Coven. It’s a bit simpler and the soil is the centerpiece……but there are also some pretty feminine leaning notes in that one. I think Verdant is very unisex, neither masculine, nor feminine.
Where I’m at now, I’m frantically trying to cut down my collection of nearly 250 bottles. When I try something new, my rule is anything below a 9.0, I don’t buy. This one comes in just short, an 8.7-8.8. The thing I would change would be to lessen the sweetness accord and to be a tad more projecting (since I prefer what I wear to be noticeable). That’s not to claim it’s a skin scent, or even subtle. It’s about right in the middle in terms of projection. Longevity is a bit better than average. A+ for uniqueness. My rating 8.7

What? No one has mentioned celery? Burnt celery. Then smells like potting soil that someone used to put out their burning celery. Sorry.

very normal scent, to me it’s like something sweet covered with dust…. dusty
Edit (14th Sept 2017) After 3+ years! i smell ink, and figs as the first splash! the the blend calms down and styrax rises up as the sweet ink remains at the back but turns slowly to acetone like sweet acetone poured on a soft leather, & the tobacco is adding the bitter note to that sweet ink and acetone. It’s quite weird! acetone, styrax, dust, figs, ink, leather, amber, fresh grass. and tobacco. rooty, soil, and sweet.

Second review on verdant. I never get tired of this one. fresh sweet earthy and medicinal. Totally uncommon. For me is a day scent, sometimes I overlay it on regular scents because it gives a sharp thing. You need just a little to get notice. Tauer perfumes last a lot. It s a liftmood perfume. You feel unique wearing verdant. I also have carillon pour ange, but it s a bit too strong now. Verdant is a jewel.

I only have a sample of this cologne…And so for a month or two I would dab one or two dabs on my hand, or simply smell the sample tube. And all I’d get from it is a green, minty, sugary smell. Very pleasant. I never understood why people kept saying dirt, or earth…UNTIL, I decided today to actually wear this cologne and put about 20 dabs on, on both wrists and my entire neck. NOW I smell something I may relate to dirt, and something kind of like a very minty,nail-polish remover chemical like smell. It’s not quite as green or sweet anymore either. It is strong, and I can imagine a few sprays from a decent sprayer could be alot to bear.
I still like this scent, and I think it’d be perfect for cooler spring days because of its freshness. Yet, it almost has a winter weather vibe to it. It’s odd, or better yet unique. I may have to have a bottle simply because I don’t have anything like it in my collection.
Even with the fact that it’s strong smelling on yourself, I’m not sure it has very good projection, or sillage just because of the nature of the notes, (green, mint, etc.)But it does last a good while, just close to the skin.

Fresh, minty, earthy, herbal…smells like I broke open a bunch of green weeds in the woods and rubbed them all over me…ultra-green!!!…now turning into the smell of grass…I had to cheat and look at the notes, its ivy not grass. Seems to be drying out now and im getting a shot of something sweet, very hidden in there….now its turning into a slight toothpaste/minty ivy…I slightly get the vanilla sugar note some people reference…The minty ivy just keeps chugging along into the drydown.
Definitely different and interesting. Id say down-the-road-decant worthy.

As a “green” scent, I like it overall. It’s VERY much a Tauer… The vanilla-sugary note- like rock candy- I am not accustomed to smelling juxtaposed with foliage- yet the effect is elegant. This challenges me.

Astonishing lasting power! really incredable – i sprayed on the strip only once. 3 days later it’s still super strong and didn’t loose any of it’s facetes. Not easy to find perfumes of such a quality nowadays. So bad i don’t like Tauer scents….
Update: I think i’ll give it a chance. It’s so contradictory – green and smoky at the same time. Original, not outworn. I start to love it, really.

Wonderful!!! So intriguing and fascinating. Not for everyone though. If you are used to safe fragrances, this one is not for you. If you are a self confident person however, this fragrance will clearly let everyone know who rules!

48)Alert, a failed experiment from CdG laboratories is escaped. Flee!
The 3 Pentachords are the worst things i’have tried for a long time. It’s all about soil tincture.
For a quarter of the price there is a better compound fragrance, but quite completely identical, in SmellBent – Brussel Sprouted.
This one at least makes it clear what you will smell.

Andy Tauer has done it again! This time the offering is a cotton candy covered forest like scent. This is probably a tad bit more feminine than masculine. It was quite enjoyable and lasted a little over 6hrs on me. This is a nice addition to the already interesting fragrance line of Tauer perfumes.

A present. Got soil and ivy. They are a bit wet (it rained?) and with some tobacco sprinkled over them. Sometimes the notes sound artificial, sometimes – very natural to me. Enjoying the scent.

Not sure where people are getting the mint thing. I’ve been wearing this almost every day for two months and I can’t get enough. It starts out on me like cotton candy, like another reviewer said. This is just the briefest surprise and only lasts a few seconds. The rest is a watery ride some place where I have never been. The smells are not really anything I have ever associated with before which for me makes it exciting. It is like traveling to a different land in a fairey tale full of woods and animals. I sniff and sniff all day trying to determine where it is going to take me next. I can still smell it the next morning on my wrist if I try. Of the entire line, I’ve smelled them all, I like this one the best. Unusual and that’s a good thing.

This is such a fascinating scent. At first it seemed too bitter green but something about it kept my olfactory attention and I began to recall memories of things that smelled like this and were pleasant. The earth smell of this scent is like freshly plowed ground in the spring when you plow under the weeds and grass and get the sharp smashed grass topnote. The leather and tobacco remind me of my Dad smelling like smoke, earth and grass after being on a tractor all night doing the spring plowing and smoking to help him stay alert. Sometimes it was pretty chilly on an early spring night and he wore leather gloves and a soft leather cap that smelled wonderful. This scent brings back memories of me and my Mom taking Dad a hot thermos of coffee to make sure he stayed awake during the plowing and smelling all those wonderful smells of green, earth, tobacco and leather that are in Verdant Pentachord. Another Tauer masterpiece.

    This fragrance is extraordinary.
Not easy to wear, may be. But really original.
The green effect in the top notes is really astonishing!

I love this fragrance. I simply described the types of notes I liked to my swap partner and he sent me a sample of this as an extra. I absolutely love it! I feel kind of on the fence about it because Tauer 2 was my hands down favorite fragrance but Verdant is giving it stiff competition. The sweet and minty notes of this fragrance are not something I tend to look for in a fragrance but it works for me with Verdant. The tobacco, dirt, earth, soil, wet leaves….ahhhh, just what I love. I can’t get enough of it. I think this fragrance is exceptional and it was apparently made especially for me!

this scent…is of course…strange. i dabbed a little on my inner elbow this morning, the smell i got was this lovely sweet wet greenery. quite dark but sheer…which evokes a lightness that i think can work for warmer weather. not the usual summer scent, but still pleasant. it had good projection and lasted for quite a long time. but…when it came nighttime and i dabbed a little on my wrist to test it again, it doesnt smell so nice. not sure if this happens to everyone, but i find some scents only smell wonderful in the daytime while others in the nighttime. for me ‘verdant’ does not smell nice or “wearable” at night. i get instead a minty sweet gasoline smell that makes me think my wrist might catch on fire anytime soon. it smells pungent.
this morning i was so convinced i might want to get this…but the change to personality makes me think otherwise.

Tauer Perfumes Pentachord VERDANT is as eccentric as I have come to expect from this house. The perfume opens rather greenishly, reminding me a bit of CARILLON POUR UN ANGE, but then swiftly turns brown with lots of tobacco and, yes, dirt. The scent in the mid-stage (after the green opening but before the drydown) smelled vaguely familiar, but it took a few minutes for me to identify. Then I suddenly realized in a startling moment of recognition that I smelled like a smoker! There is no sweetness whatsoever in this perfume according to my nose.
VERDANT is very interesting, and I think that it is as good as some other masculine tobacco perfumes, but for myself, I prefer the rose perfumes from this house, which are simply exquisite and achieve new heights of perfumic art. This creation seems more like a novelty scent, although I suspect that it would work well for some men. It should definitely appeal to those who like and wear Hermès TERRE D’HERMES, given the marked soil note and, I presume, iso-E-super, which seems patent to me in the drydown.
As is usually the case with Tauer creations, VERDANT “eau de toilette” is nearly as strong as perfume, with great longevity and big sillage.

Verdant opens greeeeeeeen and weird with a destabilizing combo of leaves, wet earthy notes and something sweet that I would call cotton candy. Pretty bizarre. The fragrance stays linear for quite a while to then introduce a synthetic woody/ambery base enriched by the typical Tauer’s incense note. A mentholated presence surrounds the area reinforcing the general green vibe. No leather to my nose…
IMO, the level of appreciation of Verdant is strongly related to one’s personal grade of appreciation of synthetic woody/ambery bases. Me? I quite like it and find it to be pretty original but it somehow fails to coalesce into something outstanding.
    No longevity issues. Nice projection.
    Rating 6.5/10

I adore the smell of this in the sample I received. , Let me iterate that I do indeed love smelling the sample as you can smell how clean and lovely this is. Its quite green a bit grassy, and I even get the leather and soil notes. On my skin is something completely different.
My skin amplifies the mint in this to degrees which my eyes water and my nose hurt. I do get the soil, which I like but its so far in the background. I get no other notes on my skin, which is a real shame!
I’m still searching for the perfect Tauer, all smell great in the bottle but on my skin they’re pretty disastrous.
On someone who’s skin dosen’t reject most of the notes, it would be one amazing scent.

Oh what a pitty , there is no positive review on verdant. I ve recently bought it and LOVE IT. all the green and minty mentioned is adorable on my skin, at the end there is something sweet ice creamy. I wish it was more lasting, just that, but Im very very happy with it. I have other samples By tauer, he is creating really interesting scents, lonestar memories, incense rose, carillion pour un ange, I agree with Yamba, anyone scent- curious and looking for originality should try tauer’s perfumes!
Pd, english is not my first language, sorry for mistakes or strange writing.

minty, medicinal, like gas or car oil, something completely wrong on my skin. Very intensive opening, a scent was linear on my skin. I didn’t dear to inhale it. I love leather in fragrances, but this time I pass. If it was a blind testing in no means I’d call it a fragrance. And it didn’t pass my overnight test for longevity.

Tried my sample of “Pentachord: Verdant” today. Had to take the sample vial top off to get the product!
Once I dabbed some on, the immediate impression was of newly cut Green Peppers. Then Spearmint came through with the peppers. The impression was of “Green Radox” from my childhood baths. This is not unpleasant, by any means; a green open-air place, wooded but airy, would seem to be what the makers of “Radox” were aiming at, and it’s still a gentle and fresh scent. Bit of a surprise but that’s exactly what I got, consistently, for hours.

wearing this today. not grokking it. longevity was very short – 4 hours max? expected more out of a tauer in that department. i caught the soil and water thing. i didn’t really catch the leather and incense though – other than there was “other stuff” in there and it could have been a mix of such things.
like most of tauer’s scents, this is extremely distinctive. ya gotta give the guy credit for trying different stuff. kudos!!!! absolutely worth trying, imo. not something i’ll go buy a bottle of, but it’s damn intriguing!

  35. :

    3 out of 5

As with all Tauer creations, Verdant is unusual, distinctive and complex. It opens with a confronting blast of green which is a combination of what seems like crushed leaves and mint. Underpinning this is fresh damp soil, giving a very earthy, cooling effect. Although incense and leather are listed as notes, they don’t reveal themselves in the classical sense but merge seamlessly to create the illusion of a wet forest.
Mr Tauer has created an intriguing scent, leaning towards the masculine side IMHO. As with all his work, anyone interested in the craft of perfumery should at least experience this.
