Description

Subtil is an intensive and passionate fragrance, blended from fruit, sweet and passionate like cherry, and flowers, narcotic and rich like tulip and lily. The fragrance literally pulses with strength of its fiery color. It impresses with deepness of its evolution on skin. Top notes represent a fruity cocktail of cherry and orange with aquatic essence of orange blossom petals. The heart flourishes with beautiful tulip, lily, lily-of-the-valley and jasmine. Mysterious musk surrounds the composition. This fragrance was created by Jacques Cavallier in 2002.

You know those bottles. You know them. They sit on your shelf collecting dust, and once in a while you will spray them on, thinking that you need to use it up so it will be gone.
Well. Just yesterday I used this one. It’s not “bad”, I thought, but just doesn’t wow me either. I admit, I was wearing it to get rid of it.
And then, something happened. Late in the evening, when I was preparing for bed, I caught a whiff of it. Lovely, tender, a fragrance hug.
That’s when I decided I hadn’t give this one enough credit. I would spray and go, never appreciating what the dry down had to offer. I won’t ever take you for granted again, dear one.

If I could name this it would be Extravagant.
The smell reminds me of the 70s and disco.
I think of glitz, like long chains and sequins,
    heavy makeup and feather boas.
As someone who loves all things cherry,
I do not like this scent, at least not on me.
I have smelled this on other people though
and found it pleasant, though still nothing
    I’d get for myself.
I have a full bottle if anyone wants to trade.
It is a respectable enough fragrance, just one I do not prefer for myself.

To me this smells a lot like a Shirley Temple cocktail (non-alcoholic drink with ginger ale and a splash of grenadine).
It’s very fresh and bubbly with an undercurrent of cherry blossom. The cherry and floral notes make up a cherry blossom feel.
It’s sweet in the same way that ginger ale is sweet–not sugary, syrupy or candied. It almost has a freshly showered-using-a-cherry-scented-body-wash vibe, if that makes sense.
Very, very pretty scent. Sundress and wedge heels or sandals appropriate. Perfect for warm/hot weather. I can easily see this being someone’s signature scent. Who knows, it could become mine.
That bottle is pretty awesome, too. Very heavy and well made. Longevity is great on clothes and projection is inoffensive but stronger than a skin scent.
Just one small recommendation–try NOT to sniff it from the bottle, and also let it settle a few minutes before sniffing. There’s an odd citrusy sour lime-like smell that needs a minute or two to settle.

I have read somewhere that this is similar to Cartier Delices, so I decided to buy it, as I was looking for a cheaper compensation.
I must say the lady had probably not her nose (or brain) 100% ok.
This was really a big disappointing for me and I don’t like this scent however tolerant can I be. If I read the notes, it sounded nice to me, but in real I was very glad to send it to someone else who liked it.

Looking for a charming ( but not Clean ) fragrance for hot weather? Look no further!
I received this as a present from a Dear Friend here at Fragrantica, and was immediately surprised at how much I liked the aura. Sometimes a good while elapses after obtaining a scent before falling for it. Not here. I had no idea what I was smelling, only that it was fresh, slightly sweet, and eminently Likable. Without benefit of the notes, I would have said I was smelling some sort of light citrus with gentle flowers and perhaps greens? Certainly I did not identify the cherry as a note until after sniffing some while longer and finding the fragrance notes listed here.
Parfum Subtil does not have a well labeled bottle, but can be identified from the original Salvatore Ferragamo by the RED glass. They are worlds apart, these two. The Original is fresh and goes sour on me. A very quality scent, nonetheless. Parfum Subtil, on the other hand, has a mild sweetness from the cherries, coupled with subtle spring florals and orange blossom beauty. It is a hot weather scent of the BEST kind.
Sillage and longevity are better than average for a modern scent. Happy whiffs stay with me all through the day. Highly recommended!
Update – This under-the-radar cutie is actually the best ‘cherry blossom type’ scent I’ve ever tested or worn. IMHO, it’s Ten times more appealing and long lasting than mainstream cherry blossoms. No joke. 😀

so good! It sticks to my skin or clothes. I just read it’s discontinued??? Why? So fresh, and goes with everything, from jeans, to dressed up stuff, whatever, this one is a MUST, it’s a little Cartier, or Van Cleef and Arpels, a classic for Ferragamo! and since I am crazy about this Co., I will try to find this scent again.
It reminds me of past times, when I studied in Italy, when I only had one perfume for many occasions, and not a bigger variety like now. It reminds me of my student friends, of moments downtown sitting somewhere in the sun and just relaxing with friends without thinking about something special, without any stress. It reminds me of freedom in its purest light, no boundaries, no pressure, just enjoying a day from morning til evening. It reminds me of fun and leisure and class, beauty and luxury. I would love to have it again, I really miss it and will certainly try to find it. The bottle is very elegant, yes italian, and the price was ok. So Mr. Ferragamo, please try to bring this prod. back to life!

This smell doesn’t seem to like my skin. It lasts for about ten minutes and then poof! it disappears. What a waste cos I love the notes so much!

I always wear this when I go to Las Vegas. Somehow it just seems right. I’ll wear it every day while I’m there.

Take a hint from the name: this is NOT a strong scent. It starts with fresh-flowery notes joined after some minutes by a very noticeable sour cherry which melts into the flowers and stays there.
Unfortunately, I can not add as to the development of the drydown as SUBTIL then disappears. Too bad – especially as it is an edp – it is very likeable and fits well for a carefree day in the city. Perhaps it performs better in other seasons?

A soft and beautiful scent but it fades quickly and stays very close to my skin – therefor I’m dissapointed. The scent itself is classy and elegant, I would like to try pure parfum-version, I bet it would be heaven =).
En mjuk och härlig doft men den försvinner fort och stannar väldigt nära huden på mig, därför är jag besviken. Doften är klassisk och elegant och jag önskar jag kunde finna ren parfym-version, den skulle vara himmelsk! =).

Usually i love all of these notes, but this scent says nothing to me. I can´t find anything interesting here – a big disappointing for me.
First i smell something synthetic, after while i can smell kind of trashy scent only. It´s not annoying scent, but like i said – it doesn´t talk. It´s boring enough.
However the bottle is beautiful and red, i didn´t find what i expected.
I´m about to sell it or give it to my friends teenage daughter.

    A dream in a bottle.
    Soft, loving,unforgettable…
    Discontunued in France…Why ????
    I’m so disappointed…

Won this for $5.00, but I certainly got more than I could’ve imagined. Opening is a warm disguised cherry with a chorus of fruity notes, moving quickly into a very beautiful completed floral with some lingering sweet. Not a bubble gum sweet nor a tutti fruitti sweet but a very summery compliment.

Right these days this is the scent that recomforts me at most. It’s a perfectly balanced act between flowers and fruits to get a really subtle, creamy, next to skin staying, understating frag. Fortunatelly for me I don’t get the jasmin, which is IMO a too dominant and persuasive flower. Unfortunatelly for me it’s not sold in Europe or at least in Germany anymore. I’ve got this bottle on ebay, I don’t know what I’ll do when empty. Anyway. The cherry scent is mot at all this chewing-gum fruity, it just makes a point on the top of the “i” and of the frag, so that there is something more to smell than the creamy feeling, but it’s not bold or annoying. I’ve got the feeling, I perceive the cherry only from time to time, e.g. when opening the window or when colder breeze. Than it is almost similar to a very delicate rose. The frag is for me perfect as it is, not loud, not fast, not bold in the crazy too loud, too fast, too bold nowadays

Beautiful, feminine, juicy fresh perfume with excellent lasting power and not expensive at all.

Subtil? For me this scent is FAR from subtil – and for that I am very grateful.
I was filling up my car with petrol after a long day at work, fumes pumping out around me, & the guy at the pump downwind of me came over to ask me what was the bewitching perfume I was wearing because he wanted to buy it for his wife! This stuff is strong with good sillage & a tenacious hold for its bargain price…but it is out of my comfort zone & bold in a different way to my beloved oriental powerhouses.
The sweetened tulip note could have caused me a headache, but there is a bitter, sappy greeness that keeps it light & tart. A touch of real-fruit juiciness (none of that tween “froot” rubbish) with a dash of ripe cherries, cool, white, clean lily florals & the ever-versatile jasmine.
It is bright without being citrus-sour, fresh without being green & watery, feminine without being tweeny or frumpy. It is feminine, flirty but DIFFERENT. Try it, you may just find a bargain beauty!
I love wearing it on windy, sunny days when I want to put a bounce in my step….it is the perfume-equivalent of an espresso. Good juice, Mr Cavallier!

Subtil is a perfume quite true to the name in a pleasant way. The start is like nothingness plus a tiny bit sweet hint (it’s not the floral fruity post 2000 girly perfume sweetness, it’s more like a nature sweetness from baby powder mixed with sweet lemon washing detergent residue on plates).
Soon there’s this really homely yet subtle slightly tart lemony orangey smell comes and lingering around like a sheer layer.
At this moment, the scent makes me picturing lovely young girl in white cotton dress and holding a lemon lollypop, but all these in an old photo with little bit dust on top.
This could easily be a go-to perfume with nearly zero-sillage. However, there’s this weird grassy gluey personality in Subtil which I also smell from Dior Addict and Guerlain Idylle, plus the slightly odd not-skanky-but-makes-me-feel-so dark chocolate accord which I found in SJP Covet (the combo of the above, my two big hates, really makes my stomach turn). To me, it’s not really subtle since I have a strong dislike to those scent. Otherwise, it will make a really lovely pure gourmand citrusy scent.
The drydown is just the grassy smell plus SJP chocolate accord which gets amplified and dusted with a bit baby powder with some warmth.
Might be lovely on the right person, but it’s really not my cup of tea. Sorry I’ve tried.

I can only smell this on myself when I am outdoors, a strange phenomenon indeed but a delightful scent (unless I am inside). Maybe a bit too “subtil”.

You may call me an ignorant but I had no idea that tulips are fragranced flowers! Really!
I grow many different kinds of tulips in my garden but none of them possess any smell whatsoever, other than very gentle natural bitter-grassy smell.
Subtil, therefore, was my blind buy, as I was so looking forward to have a perfume in my collection with a tulip note.
Subtil, indeed, is a very different fragrance and I presume it might be the tulip note.
The usual perfume pyramid, however, seems to be upside down to me as what I can smell first are florals and amongst them, the tulip note (very different to what I have smelled in all my life, so I presume it must a tulip) and after an hour I can detect a hint of fruity notes adding a bit of twist to floral notes.
The olfactive group of Subtil, a floral woody musk, does not make much sense to me as Subtil seems to be a purely floral fragrance with hardly any wood and certainly no musk, at least not to my nose, that is 🙂
Subtil is a great fragrance, it has good silage & lasting power and its price is just indecently low – I got a 100ml of EDP for $18.00. It was the deal of my life as I personally consider the quality of Subtil the same as of those very expensive, posh, overpriced super-duper fragrances from the top shelf at an exclusive perfume shop 🙂
Subtil is multi-dimentional, it changes during the day giving you an unforgettable experience of walking into a floral garden.
It stays for quite a good while and draws compliments.
And c’mon – that price???? It is like getting the juice for free and paying for the lovely bottle only 🙂
    Must have for floral lovers!
It has medium silage and is still present on my skin after 12 hours from application. What a gem!
P.S. Mr Cavallier makes me love him more and more every time I try another fragrance created by him… It is like his and mine olfactory bulbs were one 🙂

Jacques Cavallier has a very succsessful nose! this is another very nice fragrance from him! cherry cream pie, slightly powdery, very soft and foody, shy flowers in the background combined with warm musk and creamy woods on the base. ohhhh, just yummy !!! beautiful! it lasts a good while, and has a precious sillage ! love it! a masterpiece from top to bottom. wouldn t mind having a full sz bottle of this.

Simply beautiful, light, Cherry 7up with vanilla and some musk. It is so pretty and very likeable! For those that wanted to love Acqua di Gioia but couldn’t get past the sterility/sharpness of it, I implore you to try this. Gives you a similar bubbly and spring like vibe but with so much more to offer. This lasts pretty well but isn’t overpowering. Subtil will be a great fragrance for spring and it is my favorite from Ferragamo so far! ;’D Thanks bunches Gypsykitten! If you never offered this to me for swap then I probably never would have encountered this lovely little gem of a perfume!

This is more of an evening scent. Not my favorite, not a youthful scent either. But good enough to wear on days when you want a heavier fragrance.

  24. :

    3 out of 5

SUBTIL is subtle and light on me. Where is this intensive and passionate fragrance I have expected? This one is like a beautiful warm April day with gorgeous spring flowers bathing in the sun. I love the tulips and I definitely get them in this fragrance with a gentle touch of lily-of-the-valley.
I was intrigued by cherry in the top notes. It is not sweet but a bit dessert like, perhaps like a cherry martini. The opening is interesting to experience but it does not last long. The heart notes at first are 100% spring floral delight. The tulip scent has the fresh tone that I like and it goes well with the lily of the valley. Jasmine adds a bit of sweetness but it is not overpowering in this composition. Then the florals turn a bit soapy, which I do not particular enjoy. The scent slowly develops into the base notes of woods and musk. I think that there is sandalwood and perhaps rosewood. The dry-down is very light. I barely can feel it after couple of hours.
This is a nice floral light office fragrance, which is not capable of offending anyone. The sillage is medium in the beginning but then it goes to close to the skin scent on the dry down. The longevity is at least 6 to 8 hours. I will not purchase it again but I will definitely use it for the office.

Subtil smells like a ver expensive exotic drink.HOney dripped tulips, passionate ripe cherries dripping rich tulips ans lily of the valley on the side.WEll rounded.Has a spicy sweet, floral combination that doesnt really bring to mind any season.JUst good everyday!-NO surprises.to put it plainly,it just smells really good and WOULD SUIT ANY AGE,FRESH,WARM AND INVITING>LIKE I SAID,SITTING IN THE BREEZE,DRINKING A SWEET TRPOPICAL DRINK SURROUNDED BY FLOWERS!!

A very interesting fragrance, different ,maybe because of tulips.I bought this one without knowing how it smells, first I really liked but now I were this very rare.I think is suitable for summer and spring.

  27. :

    4 out of 5

Wow this smells very good but to my nose smells exactly like pour femme, which i have had and worn for years! Maybe a little “softer” but the same over all fragrance. Not complaining though- just means more Salvatore Ferragamo!

  28. :

    5 out of 5

I enjoy this fragrance very much-unlike any other, and not stupidly expensive, it outshines its faults and endears itself to me!
Slightly tart, soapy and warm-I smell lily of the valley and a tender sour cherry, but not such a metallic note like in Salvatore Ferragamo pour femme. I smell something like “tulip” oil-the kind of oil you find in a head shop. Honestly, I don’t smell terribly much much when I sniff tulips in spring-they’re pleasant but not intoxicating,
their fragrance is quite subtle-which explains the note here perhaps!
Well-named! I think this is a fantastic pretty little touch for spring wear-the lasting power is decent, but the fragrance seems like it could wear poorly in the wrong weather-so it could take a little trial and error to find the right time to enjoy Parfum Subtil-but it would be worth it!

Ferragamo’s Parfum Subtil smells almost simular to Lancome’s miracle but parfum
Subtil opens with the spiciness of
tulips a flirty blast of red cherries
the last top note is delectable fruits
the drydown has a musky vanilla undertones miracle has more of a mixture
    of peony and orangy undertones.
it’s a bit powdery but not overwelminly so the perfume ends with vanilla
    like a cherry shortcake Delecious!.

    WOO-HOO! WHAT A FRAGRANCE!
After trying the fragrance that was Salvatore Ferragamo pour Femme, I was somewhat hesitant to try Subtil. I happened to find a 1.7 oz for sale at TJ Maxx for $14.99 figuring it wouldn’t hurt to try. To echo Action: OMG OMG OMG what a BEAUTIFUL fragrance!!!!
The opening is slightly citrusy and slightly sweet, not overbearing but ‘very present’. It almost smells like a woman’s natural sweet and warm fragrance. As the fragrance develops, there are TULIPS!!! I adore tulips, but I’d never had a perfume that includes it as a note.
There is something sooo sexy and soft about that tulip note. The drydown still includes the citrus and tulip mixed with a slightly woody finish and a little white musk.
Can I say that I think I may have found my signature fragrance? I smell like a confident, sexy, passionate woman and I’m loving that! I can rock the power suit or the slinky teddy wearing this fragrance. Long lasting, excellent sillage to boot!
Subtil scores an astronomical 10 out of 10 hands down!

This is nuts. It smells just like Salvatore Ferragamo Pour Femme in the opening! Assertive fruits with a little twang of sourness and spice. Luckily, after half an hour, Parfum Subtil and Pour Femme part ways. Whereas Pour Femme retains its chypre green spice, Parfum Subtil becomes more . . . subtle. The fruits are sweet and muted by accompanying musk and florals. It also becomes highly SOAPY on my skin. Not too much sillage, decent lasting power.
All said, Pour Femme would be painted in sharp, brilliant, primary colors; Parfum Subtil would be shrouded in sweet but muted greys and pastels. I personally dislike the musk and soap, but on the right personality . . .

This is a very attractive scent that I’m really enjoying alot.
There’s a fizzy pop of marachino cherry in here that I’m crazy about , it’s delicious ! Tulip & lily make this fresh & very chic smelling. The musk gives it body & I swear there’s something a little boozy in this wonderful potion..Subtil is perfectly sweet & very appealing to me.
Guys seem to think this smells good when I wear this, so there is some sex appeal in this perfume , in a cheerful, unassuming way.
One of the best casual scents in my opinion, to me it’s wearable in any weather , any occasion , perfect for vibrant , sunny gals for sure.
Long lasting on my skin , 6 hours plus.

With the first spray I was in love, I knew that I had to have this scent. This a lovely Lily of the Valley scent in that it isn’t too strong. It has a very nice powdery dry down. I wish the staying power was better. As much as I love this scent I must admit that it isn’t a good winter or fall scent and I will have to wait until spring to wear it

  34. :

    4 out of 5

On my skin, the floral notes balanced each other. No one flower overpowered another. I didn’t get much cherry specifically, but the top notes did sparkle, and the delicately musky base was prominent amid the floral composition, which made the fragrance more compatible with my chemistry.
I would have to agree with Minousdepoes that it is probably not a scent for very young girls. It made me think of what a perfumed floral-musky soap might smell like if it were targeted at an older generation. Overall, it was unassuming and pleasantly (not overwhelmingly) feminine, and worked very well for wearing in the office. My fiance loved it, too.

  35. :

First, I loved it! Smelled like sour cherry milk shake. Pleasant, romantic and subtle, indeed.
But… after getting used to it, it started to disappear from the very beginning which annoyed me all the time. The lasting power and the strength are the greatest disadvantage of this perfume. Very nice, but not noticeable at all. 🙁

  36. :

Orange blossoms and lilies of the valley with a hint of cherry.
Very simple, but i like very much the tulip note.
Tulip makes this distinguished. All rest of this fragrance are very plain.
    However is pleasant and feminine.
Could be fine for rainy days (in my opinion).

Very similair to Escade S, but much better, more powerfull. A warm smell, not to sweet and a good, very good staying power.I think not for very young girls.

Very straightforward, definitely not shy. It has a quality to linger in your nose and mind after the person that wers it is gone, and it`s a pleasant feeling. Lush and luxirous, it calls for sparkling, bright personality. Lily of the valley and tulip with it`s fresh and bitter undertones softens this celebration of fruit and flowers. It dries out with a nice musk that still has the sweetness of jasmine in it.
I always thought that it`s very similar to Zillion by Herbalife, only even more feminine. I would like to be friends again!
