I liked the original Panda, but this reformulation is also brilliant. This may well be the most tenacious scent that I have ever worn: I sprayed this on at 8:30am and, 15 hours later, it’s still there – faint, but noticeable.
I don’t know why Panda is classified as ‘Oriental Floral’ because, to my nose, it’s predominantly green-musky. It’s completely unisex: the opening still contains that earthy-civet scent that smelled like panda’s poop in the original version, but it quickly subsides and the rest of the exposition is dominated by the sour green apple (fortunately it smells nothing like DKNY!) This is followed by an interplay of green, woody and fruity notes: aside from apple, soil and civet I can also smell dirty patchouli, something leafy, some powdery florals, mostly osmanthus, with a fresh-ozonic overlay. If you love this type of green-musky unisex fragrances, do invest in this beauty, because it is incredibly long lasting and leaves a beautiful trail.

Panda opens with a juicy green apple and crushed leaves (though I don’t get tea, which is listed), with pretty osmanthus and white flowers a few minutes later. That little civet fellow starts to come out and I’ve grown to like him since I started sampling Zoologist. Earth! I love the earth, and so does the roly-poly panda. Sandalwood and musk add depth, softness and warmth. I don’t pick up much patchouli, amber or vanilla, but maybe I don’t need to!
I honestly expected bamboo, even though it’s not a listed note, and I see in a couple of reviews that the first version did have it. Wonder why it was taken out. Well, no need to be so literal. Panda is pure nature and that’s a good thing!
Panda is long lasting and sillage is moderate.

Wow!This is a manly scent. I’ve been wearing this for a few days now…all I can say is that Zoologist is a brand to be taken very seriously. This is a very bold animalic fragrance. The civet is definitely there. I’ve not smelled any perfume like this before. It is freshy green, floral, smoky like the smell of tobacco and earthy. A pure masterpiece!

Despite the removal of the bamboo, I like this reformulated one. I agree it’s a little more wearable than the other Panda, although I liked that one too. I have a sample vial still that I’m using sparingly. I like the fruity/earthy/animalic combo of Panda. Most fruity fragrances and I don’t get along very well, but the Zoologist ones seem to work for me. I agree with Casamir that this is sort of reminiscent of Bat, but they don’t smell the same. It’s much lighter and fresher, like a summer weather version of Bat, if you will. I dig it.

This was my first introduction to the house of Zoologist and it blew me away. Such unique fragrances! This one in particular opens up with a very fresh green musk that then dies into an Oriental floral before ending with a light powdery wood scent. Perfect for day wear, but is easily wearable any time of day. Great performance. I tried a sample of it and bought a bigger bottle the next day.

High end freshly cleaned bathroom. That’s what I smell when I spray this.

    I was wondering.
This is wayy better than the per-million green of the original and kudos for Zoologist for realizing the need to make more of an actual Cologne/Perfume than just Artwork with a bunch of lab pipettes.
So there is some daylight here with apples/citrus and something honeyed with the apparent but expected greeness
Still; animalic-musk/civet are such strong notes, you’d think as a reformulation Mr Wong would have learnt a lesson in Topnotes and wearability.
While he has somewhat, he’s sort of at it again; this isn’t particularly the crowd-pleaser that the Huge apple diagram in the pyramid points towards; the musk is still strong and won’t sit comfortably with the casual/mainstream crowd.
In the end; if you’re going Fruity, you better be doing it right (ie: more Aventus and Enchanted Forest, less Pulp and Acier Aluminum)
Version 2017 still treads a perilous path between ‘Fun n Fruity’ and ‘Weirdo art guy/girl doing semi-exciting but ultimately too different things’
Mmm. A bit more testing needed; I’m trying to be generous but these Niche heads really do need to put away the cat-litter more often
    My rating: 6/10

They reformulated this one to something completely different. I cannot get my head around how this has anything to do with Panda. This version is extremely sweet, full blast of fruity notes, reminds me of Byredo Pulp (animalic version)

This is probably my second favorite scent of the whole zoologist line, right behind Macaque. Panda 2017 is sweet and tart, also green and woody, with some of my favorite floral notes to soften its vibrancy. Beautiful color in the bottle, and the scent is so playful and upbeat. This reminds me of how an anime Panda, versus a real panda, would smell. As others have noted, it is very long lasting.

Fruity aquatic. Fairly pedestrian; my least favorite so far from this house. Even with that it’s still head and shoulders above most pedestrian fragrances. I guess this is supposed to be a Panda eating an apple in a flower filled bamboo forest?? Clean and green, with a zippy tartness from the green apple. Cool and airy. Very Japanese in style, by which I mean this is the kind of fragrance Japanese companies use in their soap/ deodorant/ personal grooming products. It also reminds me of those 90’s “fresh” fragrances. Panda is actually quite pleasant and likeable, just boring. It’s happy and uplifting though, and if that’s what you want you could do far worse.

Apple and civet, which gives this fragrance a bit of a cat piss vibe in the background along with the fruityness and earthyness. Overall it smells nice, except for that cat piss smell if you really put your nose into it

If I could handle the first 10 minutes this would be one of my favourite perfumes… An oriental apple, so rich, fresh and beautiful. Unlike anything I have tryed before. I adore it. Not the usual green fruit mix… Unfortunately it opens up with quite a bit of soil wich on my skin is so prominent that simply puts me off. It’s the first note that hits my nose before the rest starts playing.
More testing required. Maybe in warmer weather it could work on me.
If you like earth, soil and a bit of greenish dampness than you could love it from the start.
In any case it is something worth exploring. Great projection for the first couple of hours, than becomes subtler, but still demands attention. Moderate longevity. Definitely unisex. I imagine this works easier on man thou.
Tested from an original samole bought directly from Zoologist.

This fragrance is so unusual to me. The apple, from the listed notes, is the strongest to me. There’s this strange tartness that reminds me of something that I found in most Amouage scents. Am I crazy? Is it an alcohol thing?
BUT! My GOSH, I love this so much! It lasts longer than any scent I’ve ever worn, even through a shower. Despite what people say, I do detect something similar to bamboo.
I’ve not tried the original, but that doesn’t mean I’m without right to an opinion about the beauty of this. Don’t understand the hatred for this.

Actually smells pretty pleasant. After the first spritz I immediately get fresh green and earthy notes. After 10 seconds the warm base notes with musky civet come through. The civet is not predominant and not disturbing at all. Even when you smell it up close, it smells sour at most and is still not unpleasant. After 30 seconds I started to get the floral notes together with the green apple and patchouli in the background. After 2 minutes it seems to stop developing for a while and the sweet green apple becomes the predominant note (with the orange appearing too). After 5 minutes I definitely start to smell the ozonic notes too. And I think this stage is the best and I love this phase. The vanila comes through after 10 minutes and it stays that way. Everything is mixed well now and it’s veery smooth. None of the notes feel out of place and you can enjoy the fragrance as a whole.
EDIT: I kind of missed this part the first time. After 30 minutes it starts to get feminine and floral on me for a short duration. It smells like the sweat of a woman – at least a little. I know this will sound weird but it smells kind of like the underwear of a woman I dated once. Like vagina sweat or something. Very weird… but I don’t dislike this to be honest. EDIT END
From what I’ve heard the other Zoologist fragrances capture the essence of the habitat pretty well, but this one unfortunately doesn’t. Something is missing.
But in return you get a very wearable and imo very versatile fragrance. The ingredients seem to be decent to good quality.
I honestly can’t agree with most reviewers before me. This is easily a like for me, almost a love. Not what I was expecting, but it’s impossible for me to dislike this. The only downside I could think of is that it reminds me of some other popular perfumes I’ve smelled before. The opening (10minutes) is very unique but it hasn’t got that uniqueness after the opening is over.
    Long lasting and moderate sillage.

The new Panda is completely different from the older formulation. There is absolutely no similarity between the two. The old Panda was very fresh, smelled like a bamboo forest during or after the rain. This one, however, smells like tart apple mixed with earthiness and some musk. Due to the patchouli note it makes me think of Thierry Mugler line, as they use a very similar dirty patchouli as in Panda. It is pleasant, but for those with an acquired taste, as this formulation is not as easy going and easy-to-wear as it predecessor. I really do like it, yet like with any other Zoologist fragrance, you must sample it before getting a bottle, it is definitely not for everyone.
P.S. This formulation is not as reminiscent of a Panda as the original fragrance (in my opinion). To me, this could be called Elk, bear, mouse or any other animal that has apples in their diet (Pandas do too, but bamboo is what comes to mind first).

I got samples of old and new and I dislike both. The opening is just disgusting in my opinion. Not a blind buy and you really have to acquire this taste of smell for whatever they’re trying to achieve.

I got a sample of this along with Dragonfly. I’ve always avoided animal notes for fear of “cat pee” smell. Apple is another one I avoid. So I was pleasantly surprised by this and glad I ventured out of my comfort zone.
The musk and civet are the predominant notes for me. I can’t make out the other notes individually, I just get a general fruitiness and fresh floral behind the harshness of the musk and civet. But it all seems to work together well. After a while the fruits and florals die down though, and then it’s very “animalic,” at least compared to what I’m used to.
I haven’t tried the original version of Panda, so can’t compare. But I guess I could picture a large bear in a forest, even without having bamboo or much “green” notes.
This is a little bolder scent than I’m used to, so I don’t know if I’d call this a safe blind buy, but definitely worth trying in my opinion.

This new formulation is much more wearable than the original Panda. The original was one of the few fragrances I’ve ever tried that pretty much gave me a headache – an orange blossom bomb – and a bit more feminine for my preference.
The new Panda is nice – mostly green apple, a wet earthiness, and hints of white florals. (If only it had a bit of the spicy green scent of real bamboo leaves to give me a feeling that it’s inspired by a panda.)
One thing I do have to say though, because of the fruits and earthy notes, it does remind me of another of Zoologist’s scents: Bat.

I do not like this one at all. I love the original formula of Panda, lovely fresh bamboo, this is nothing like that. It has this terrible synthetic leather and oud (even though not listed) that completely took over and dominated the composition giving me a migraine. I was given a free sample with my last Zoologist order that unfortunately leaked onto everything else in the order and I have spent the last month praying for the smell to disappear…..so yes it has incredible longevity, unfortunately I dislike it.
