The Different Company presents their new fragrance named Oriental Lounge, created by Celine Ellena as the fragrance of eternal dream enriched with gentle spices, as an oasis of freshness and sensuality of oriental silk.

This fragrance takes us for a hand to distant regions while revealing spirit, life and breath of the Orient. Mysterious and brilliant Oriental Lounge provokes with modern, sophisticated nuances of amber, Caloupille leaves (Curry tree), bergamot, tonka, labdanum, pepper, red rose and silk.

Sweetness of Caloupille and freshness of bergamot accompanied by depth and warmth of amber and tonka create a richer composition with more nuances, available as 50 and 90 ml EDP. The fragrance has been in sale since October 2009.

Oriental Lounge is a nice sweet/powdery amber with a sweet woody note and some florals. Stays very close to the skin and feels totally feminine. Moreover it’s not a new smell for me.
The dominant amber combo feels ethereal and very light making this scent suitable for warm weather daytime.
Longevity is moderate, sillage and peojection are soft.

Very impressive smell, works better on lady’ skin
The only issue I find is the longevity, 2 or 3 hours max
I like the smell though, very sexy & classy at the same time, wish it lasts longer

Both a thin oriental as Sherapop says and sharp pencil shavings with strong curry note that causes nose fatigue on me. The amber in the drydown doesn’t help as it adds some plastic aura to the “lounge” of piquancy and bitterness. I find myself many times thinking of fragrances by a colour… some are white to my mind, pink… red… and in this case perhaps one of the troubles I face is I go from green to orange to brown to… and this could be interesting if it didn’t feel it’s the result of a mess.
I have sampled this a few times and it just feels weird… it seems not to last nor radiate much but then you put your nose close and the smell of a kitchen is there with a knife ready to threaten you. I would not advise to overspray. People will notice it, worry not! I say no but imagine this highlighting other notes on other people’s skin.

A nice dry creamy rich tonka with a hint of floral, bergamot and spice that dries down to a lovely amber if you can get past the curry leaf/cumin/BO note in the top. It turns lovely.

I really like this smell, even though I agree that there is nothing groundbreaking here. It’s a very well made soft oriental fragrance, totally in line with the brand’s vision, namely to create fragrances appropriate for everyday use.
I don’t know how curry tree smells, and I can’t smell anything remotely related to the spice I am used to smelling in East Asian cuisine. I get a lot of mild warm amber and something smoky and dry. Again, not sure which notes I am smelling as the fragrance is blended impeccably. I normally don’t like ambers, but this fragrance is perfectly balanced, resinous, and it gives me a really nice warm pleasant feeling when I wear it. Reminds me of n older version of Dior’s Dune that I haven’t smelled for many years.
I’m very happy with this purchase. I can wear this to work, out at night or just at home for the “warm uplift” in the winter.

Rose, lapdanum, amber, black pepper, and tonka.
Overly soft and stays close to skin after an hour.
    Nothing new so far.

@edweena.1 one of the great problems with TDC (as for Lutens) are the refillable bottles, anyone can just open the spray and fill the bottle with everything :o(

I’m wondering if my bottle of oriental lounge is a fake. I have some samples, the shower gel & a bottle of eau de parfum. The bottle of edp is SO powdery it chokes me. Sample & shower gel have a mild powder presence.
The sample has a nice balance of powder, spice & tonka.
Remember: certain Web retailers will not guarantee authenticity.
That bein’ said, if you want a sample of powder-bomb edp that is oriental lounge-ish, please feel free to PM me.

I love orientals specially I love amber and tonka but unfortunately I dislike oriental lounge.there’s something in it that I can’t get along with.first time I smelled it I thought it smells like roasted sesame on an oily bread.by the way I love sesame to eat but I don’t like it as perfume.there’s no sesame here so I decided to smell more carefully
What I dislike in it was something spicy and also something bitter.so I guess it shall be a combination of curry and labdanum.though I can detect amber and tonka, labdanum and curry remain very prominent all through it’s life so even if you love orientals with amber,Tonka and pepper, you need to try this one before deciding to buy it
When I read other reviews I wonder if we’re talking about one perfume or not.it has nothing to do with my beloved sweet, citrusy, super feminine cinema.it’s bitterish and unique but not my taste at all.sillage is big during first hour.I applies just two sprays and I couldn’t continue testing perfumes because all I could smell was oriental lounge but longevity was weak and fortunately it disappeared into thin air after two hours
It’s definitely unisex and wearable the same for both genders

The large shutter windows burst open – you sleepily prop yourself up to see your beloved smiling as the wind flutters her nightie suggestively. Morning dew and the crispness of blossoming roses wind throughout the expanse of your room. She looks over at you, the fire in her eyes matches the color of her wisping hair, and she pounces. You brace yourself for what’s to come….like finding heaven in a collision! The pepper and cumin of this fiery coupling interlace disarmingly with the freshness of the morning air and the powdery roses…every breath, every touch, every sigh is pure pleasure. Relief washes over you and your lover…her skin angel soft against your ruggedness. You hold her close as you drift off into the bliss of afterglow…you smell her once more, deeply – the scent of the most beautiful rose and a playful amber carry you off to sleep…You snap awake as if struck by lightning. Drenched in a heavy sweat, you curse the night for allowing her into your dreamscape – she has long since gone…lost in the fires of young and lustful love. Your skin smells of roses and amber…you cry softly at her remembrance…if only you had been a better man.
Day 85 – Into the Unknown
Listening to: Radiohead – Black Star
Notes: This was another gift from a good friend – I didn’t know what to expect as it was a blind buy….turns out I love it! This beauty opens with a crisp and clear clove note mixed with a freshly blossoming rose and a rich and powdery amber (which IS present from the beginning!). There are hints of pepper and cumin quietly lingering behind the gorgeous rose note…this scent is truly unisex in its delivery. As the opening fades, a whipped orris and cedar note touched by a somewhat airy amber and a lingering fragrant rose. The fume dips in and out of the floral notes and ambered wood notes until it quiets to a whisper some 10 hours after it starts. This was my first TDC fume a day it impressed me in a big way – the rose note in here is stunning and remains constant from beginning to end. For me, it wasn’t a quiet or short lasting ride and it is a must have for rose lovers!

Oh my, this is strong on me. Top notes are pleasant, after about an hour, oriental Lounge radiates amber and incense…. which is not really me.

This does what it was apparently intended to do (the “light oriental” idea). The major issue some might have is that orientals aren’t supposed to be “light.” Do you really want a light chocolate mousse for dessert? What would that taste like? Well, everyone wants it to taste like “real” chocolate mousse, don’t they? How many people say things like, “I enjoy chocolate mousse, but there’s something about it that sort of bothers me – perhaps if it was lightened up it would be better?” I’ve never heard anyone say anything like that about any food item! However, there may be a difference with scents, so to each his own. I’ll also mention that I consider this unisex, but I’d say it’s definitely a bit “feminine leaning.” So, this is enjoyable but I find myself thinking that it would be better for layering (since it’s not especially complex) than for wearing by itself. If you want to save some money I’d suggest trying Ambre Gris by Balmain, which I prefer.

Surprisingly pleasant, light, polite, warm oriental gourmand. Lovely tonka, very soft rose, gorgeous transparent amber. A touch sweet but not sugary, and I see no reason a man couldn’t wear it well. Not spicy, not a powerhouse (which are my usual preferences), not earth-shaking but very wearable and well composed. It feels very balanced and so smooth. I get no powder from it and while I can see a passing resemblance to Cinema, it’s a stretch. I am all about heavy, opulent orientals and I’m not a big gourmand fan. Light is a word that generally sends chills up my spine – I am a product of the early 80s, and too often light = thin. I think this is light, in a good way. A modern Oriental done well.

Oriental Lounge by The Different Company is a beautiful sweet Oriental fragrance. From the first spray you can smell the amber and tonka. In the dry down it is a soft Oriental gourmand. The tonka really shines in the dry down. It is sweet, peppery, spicy, mysterious and alluring. I could picture Greta Garbo wearing this fragrance in Grand Hotel.

Got a sample of Oriental Lounge. It leans a little more towards the feminine side in my opinion.
It is a beautiful scent, but is completely different whether tested on paper strip or on skin. On a tester strip, it starts with bergamot and quickly goes down to a nice rose-floral amber. Tested on skin, again it starts with bergamot, but dries down to tonka, with hints of amber and black pepper.

The Difference Company was created in 2000 by Jean-Claude Ellena and Thierry de Baschmakoff. The original perfumer of the house was Jean-Claude, who created The Different Company’s Osmanthus, one of the first widely marketed perfumes to every utilize the note of the osmanthus flower. Baschmakoff is responsible for most of the bottle designs, while Ellena’s daughter, Celine Ellena, is the current in-house perfumer for the company, as well as the creator of Oriental Lounge.
Top notes include Caloupille leaves (also referenced as Kaloupile leaves) or still more simply “curry leaves,” bergamot, and pepper. The heart of the fragrance contains rose and satinwood. The base has tonka bean, labdanum, and amber. Scandalously, rose in this fragrance is actually an accord, not a note: it consists of a blend of pepper, geranium, and an “undisclosed note.” Believe me: you’d swear on your grandmother’s grave that it was rose. If I had to, I would classify Oriental Lounge as a floral oriental.
The beginning of the fragrance opens up with a fleeting bergamot that’s gone before you know it, but that’s okay. As soon as you get a good whiff of it on your skin, you know you’re not here for the citrus, but rather the lush, somnolent, creamy amber. This fragrance is all about a deep, balsamic amber with a fair amount of spice to keep things interesting. But the spice here isn’t anything one would consider typically “oriental” – no anise, or cardamom, or cumin or caraway.
Rather, the predominant spice note, one which I can honestly say I have smelled before, is that of the curry leave. Curry leaves come, perhaps not surprisingly, from a plant called the curry leaf tree, which is a member of the Murraya family, specifically Murraya koenigii. If you have ever had the pleasure of brushing up against a Murraya, you will find that it exudes the most satisfying, warm, earthy citrus aroma. The curry leaf is not used in actual curry spice mix (think masala) that is common in Indian cooking. However, it is used widely in Indian cooking much the way Americans or Europeans would use a bay leaf – plopped in whole into soups, stews, or anything else that has the distinctively Southern Indian flavor profile of cumin, turmeric, cardamom, cloves, allspice, ginger, and garlic. They are sometimes fried whole in oil to extract the essential oils from the leaf, much as you would do with many powdered spices.
It’s hardly a surprise that Oriental Lounge is meant to invoke “an oasis of freshness and sensuality of Oriental silk.” The way the curry leaf mixes with the balsam and amber creates the effect of something rich and warm enveloping you, just like a silken scarf would. The dry down is a predominantly floral, reminding me of the mid-stages of Shalimar EDT – the peachy, barely-sweet vanilla mixed with the faintest hint of a dusty, musky, truly animalic sandalwood-like base – except Oriental Lounge never gets skanky. The longer the dry down continues, the more vocal the rose becomes, mixed with the soft moribund amber, all of which is gone in four to five hours.
While a stunning olfactory performance, the longevity is much more on the average side; sillage will depend on the wearer, but will probably be between below-average and average. After three or four hours, it becomes a very well-behaved skin scent, which frankly is okay with me. If this was a sillage monster, I would feel uncomfortable wearing this almost anywhere in public. It’s much too rich and opulent smelling to go full blast all day long.
It retails for $165 for a 50 ml bottle and $235 for a 90 ml. I’ve seen 50 ml bottles on sites like eBay for one-third this price – and at that price it’s an absolute steal.
The overall impression? The forbidden inside of a Sultan’s seraglio, where only eunuchs are meant to tread, the concubines perfumed with sweet rosewater, laying around in fine satin, waiting their next call to the palace. The best orientals exude a kind of languidness, a sprezzatura uniquely their own. Oriental Lounge is nothing short of an exquisite unisex delight. I suppose the art of perfumery runs in the family.

Tonka heaven! Such a gorgeous note and so often left to blend in with the background, it’s great to see it get to shine here.
I love orientals, but find they end up wearing me. I seem to end up going for lighter perfumes and wishing I could cope with the powerhouses. This one is much lighter so it really works for me (although for lovers of the old school orientals, this might not pack enough of a punch for you).
The amber is beautifully warm. It’s one of those ambers that makes you think of fluidity rather than stone. Like a molten river. It pairs very well with the nutty tonka. There are hints of pepper and labdanum, and the rose appears very gently somewhere in the middle, but it’s not a full on rose, it’s there to offer depth to the other notes.
This one is like a luxurious hug. FB worthy to me.
Very soft sillage and around 8 hours longevity. Perfect for wearing to bed.

Amberous, exquisite, definitely pretty, though on me not terrible lasting (I have a sample of the EDP) warm and sensuous, spicy, a hint and cumin and turmeric perhaps? Sweet, gentle, pleasant.
A little bit like Molinard Musc

    Light, sweet oriental.
Opens with citrusy, spicy amber and dries down to softer, spicy mix. Somewhat sweet and innocent. Nice fragrance, but I like my amber to be more stronger and darker.

A well made sweet amber scent that has some kind of dusty as well as floral accords in the background. It’s pretty much unisex but has a gentle feminine vibe in the beginning.
I found the scent pleasant and liked it, though I’m not gonna add it to my own wardrobe. It had good longevity and moderate projection on my skin.

  22. :

Bergamot, tonka and amber is what I’m picking up on the opening. This gives the fragrance a nice fresh aromatic sweet amber scent.
After a short while the pepper and woods come into play making sure the scent does not become too sweet. Later on in the drydown a slight floral rose note joins the blend giving the scent a extra dimension.
This accord of citrus aromatic amber and peppery woods is becoming quite common now. And I have smelled it in a lot of different fragrances.
A very nice scent though it does nothing to distinguish itself amongst other scents of it’s kind. In fact I like Barkhane by Teo Cabanel better which is highly reminiscent of this fragrance.

From reading the reviews, some of whom are my trusted reviewers, I did not have very high hopes for this, especially apart from De Bachmakov, I did not find others I’ve tried from this line, too impressive. I do like this oriental very much. It is sweet, but not too sweet and balances the spices and amber very nicely, making this a smooth balmy composition. I like powdery scents and I like dry scents but thankfully for me, this has neither effect on my skin. I have Lutens’ Amber Sultan for a dry oriental and Calypso’s Amber for a powdery amber and I intend to get a full bottle of Oriental Lounge for the days I want a smooth oriental. I agree with rickyrebarco that this is not a thin oriental by far. It may not be unique or provoking, but it is lush and comfortable. Suitable for days where you just want something cozy and comfortable and definitely well-made. Sillage on me even from a dab bottle (the official sample) is very good (I usually have issues with dabbing as opposed to spray samples) and longevity is also very good, I’ve gone over the 8 hour mark and the scent holds very well. I would definitely recommend this as a good quality oriental despite it’s rather hefty price tag.

An oriental that is not especially loud or brash. Stays reasonably close to the skin, and the dry-down is a light, spicy, powdery affair. It is, however, too sweet for my tastes, both in the opening and in the stages of development.

  25. :

    5 out of 5

I LOVE oriental scents. Unfortunatelly many of them are a bit too loud and can cause headache and nausea. Oriental Lounge is not one of those. I so love this one. It’s beautifully balanced and lets hope it lasts. I will get back with rates for longevity.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

Pardon me, but occasionally I do like exquisite light orientals.
Oriental Lounge is a relaxed beauty, far from oppressive, designed to make you feel good.
The opening notes give me the reliable sense of a good old fashioned peppery cleaning agent, which I highly approve of and simply must recommend.
In due course, a delicious amber lingers around, together with labdanum (love labdanum) and a hint of curry, inviting me to sniff my wrist at least every half hour.
No idea what satinwood smells like, but I cannot find anything disagreeable in this perfectly polished warm perfume.
    Must try.
    Edit: 100913:
Next day, before shower, my skin still exuded cozy amber

  27. :

I have to agree with the previous review. What is that sharp, horrible, synthetic smell? Is it cashmeran? I think I inevitably hate every perfume that has this. They all smell the same, no matter what other notes are whispering backstage. It smells like something is burning, like an electrical fire. This is a component that shouldn’t be at all relevant outside of the weird Tar/copier/paint thinner “shock” lines like the one CDG has. So why is it ubiquitous now? It has to have something to do with cost, and with these niche companies raising their prices every few months AND using cheap synthetics as the basis and motivating spirit behind their compositions, welll….I digress.
I get the same thin, high and sharp vibe from L’Artisan’s Traversee du Bosphore, another purportedly “modern” oriental. These new “orientals” are anything but. If you want a transparent and diffusive, dreamy oriental, go for Cinq Mondes Eau Egyptienne, not this horror, whose ultimate triumph is a synthetic base that won’t budge without a vicious scrubbing.

  28. :

    3 out of 5

Oriental lounge? No. Only a handful of cheap spices spilt onto synthetic amber. This is oriental only in terms of its ingredient list. It’s not rich, dark or warm. What I dislike the most about it is its lack of depth. It’s a cold, thin, shallow modern frag with all notes billowing, sporting for attention. It’s not well blended or rounded and has a kind of blusterous character. In many ways it smells like BLV Notte Pour Femme by Bvlgari. Not impressive at all.

  29. :

    5 out of 5

Now this is a fragrance to love! The spicy, peppery topnotes are sublime and mesh beautifully with the amber, woody and tonka basenotes. This is absolutely smooth as silk, perfectly balanced, an oriental with a definite nod to the classics, but a uniqueness that makes you want it, need it, because of its modern take on the oriental genre. This is a beautiful scent that will never wear you.
I do not understand why people are calling this a “thin” oriental. It’s a modern take on the oriental genre, surely. It’s lighter and less heavy than many of the original orientals like Shalimar, but that is the whole point of this scent. It was meant to be different, fresher, not so heavy and loud enough to encompass an entire room. It is either to your taste, or it is not. There is nothing wrong with the structure or design of this scent. It’s just modern.

  30. :

    3 out of 5

Oriental Lounge is definitely a sweet amber and woody perfume with an Oriental vibe. I’ll admit, I’ve never heard of satinwood, but it’s there! Before I saw the notes, I couldn’t believe how smooth the fragrance was, like a fine piece of wood that has just been sanded to the point where it feels like silk to your fingertips.
I was so excited to smell curry tree in a perfume. It’s extremely subtle, so I don’t find this perfume to be too spicy, nothing like a spice cabinet. Mostly it’s a smooth and soft amber. Something in it smells like sweetened wheat cereal too. I love it!

  31. :

Love this so much!. It’s juicy plum like, deep yet soft, powdery, with sweet amber, Insence and a lush Rose. It’s very much a sophisticated scent, smells expensive, womanly. As though being wrapped in silks, cashmere, satins and velvet, literally lounging in luxury. It’s very “me” which is wonderful to find.( Hehehe)

  32. :

Prim and proper or pusillanimous? It’s all a matter of taste, I suppose—one which I have yet to acquire in the case of the kinder, gentler, thinner orientals of which The Different Company ORIENTAL LOUNGE is one. Upon application, I was sure that I recognized the scent, and I probably did in the form of fleeting traces of many classic oriental perfumes, but here it was all too foggy and distinct, mealy-mouthed and weak.
“Thin orientals” seem to be wanting to be all things to all people but end by being simply too wishy-washy for me. I guess that I’m just old school when it comes to orientals. I like them dark, strong, and intoxicating. The sort of perfume that you’d have to wear to be noticed in a dark, smoke-filled oriental lounge, come to think of it. Does ORIENTAL LOUNGE smell bad? No, not at all. But it smells to me like the silhouette of a perfume.
Although ORIENTAL LOUNGE is not for me, anyone who likes this sort of “thin oriental” should definitely check out the Roméa D’Améor line (also composed by a great nose, but not his best work, IMNSHO).

I’m a bit worried! Most if not all of the reviews above seem to be by women, the guy in Harrods told me it was unisex – what the hell, I’m big and butch enough to wear this.lol
I love this, absolutely love it like nothing else. Deeply intoxicating, rich, sensuous and mysterious. For me this is the equivalent olfactory experience of seeing that ‘person’ that really knocks all your senses for six across a crowded room, walking directly towards you – wow.

  34. :

I have a mini of this one and I like it, but I don’t love it.
It seems to me that it lacks air as element. It’s much about oriental powdery spice and more than YSL Cinema is much closer to a sweet form of Shalimar without the big oomph! It’s a nice scent to wear that I would have probably been very attracted 4-5 years ago.
Worthy a try if you like the type.

  35. :

Am I the only one who thinks that this smells just like Yves Saint Laurent Cinema?
It’s a good quality perfum, but it’s not original at all. At least on my skin, both Oriental Lounge and YSL Cinema smell the same.
Cozy, sweet vanilla with citrus on top and a hint of amber.
I have worn two samples of Cinema and some drops of Oriental Lounge, and the lasting power is 4 hours more or less.

  36. :

This is a fragrance for oriental & unique gourmand lovers.
It’s very warm and not spicy at all to my nose.
It has an almost touchable, dense accord of fresh nuts – a feature that some of you would appreciate, but which makes it unwearable for me. The smell of nuts which have been collected a bit too soon – they are still a bit green and moist, crunchy and bitter in taste.
    I can’t detect specific notes.
The fragrance has a big sillage and extreme staying power – good quality and unusual aroma … really a ‘different’ perfume!

The perfume guides us into an eastern lounge, which his creator concealed in dubbing him,. Semidarkness, because tea lights burn only on the tables, the different nuances of the red colours, and gold with deep tone receives us. Nicely worked, bergamot intended as our table for the refreshment first gets to the sound of a hand-bell in his free form because of a blare appearing fragrance. We find a job with the veils comfortably, and in the locality covered with the beautiful carpets knotted handwise. The adventurous ones a leather covered with embroideries settles onto stool in order to be allowed to give himself up to this travel stroking all body parts with warmth. Welcoming the guests, everybody embraces the sign of his respect the haggard proprietor, for who distance holder, though his convivial affection the curry bringing the coolness letter displays. It is served up, came into existence in coppers with the metallic touch decorated with the gaudy motives the drinks asked, with which one this tartness slips away soon, and we feel his fruit, which leads to a newer turn, the hard-working work of the pepper. Into fast scaled, wonderful cloths dressed girls, everything place tiny caskets on a table, in which one tiny figures rest, that let us amuse our brain working eternally as a pleasant pastime, with a boarded game. The highlight of the entertainment bringing resting with the comforting and woody note, when beside a quiet sitar word flutters it till now, from before the curious eyes curtain covering everything beneficially. The legendary nightly breeze connects the loving hearts to a thin red rose band now. Goes regularly to one being late that he should find them watchfully only, who they are about to sink just the labdanum from syrup in the garden of soaked pleasures. The sensual moments the hurries to ripen on an act tonkabean, for which sweet shimmer gained from his fleshy inside falls onto the lovers, that to pressing against the creamy leather let him lend celestial light. The light beams of the moon, than so many changes of sword, the air of the delight billowing dustily is pierced. The atmosphere created by the fragrance turns into the one which can be seen quasi in the filtered light a seducer’s strength. The oriental, spicy world’s big composer is missing, but the tonkabean of which use was made with the bold and modern alloyage, supplies the grand master’s, the vanilla’s role fully. Lasts until long time while the warmth and rich one is a fragrance, than a body, his strength tired quietens down somewhere in the secret fabric of the leather lost finally. The assuaged touch, raises his head in order to be allowed to live his wild and lustful dance again with even smaller twitching, when ambergris extending the spiritual support by quiet tap arrives, that from heavenly lace let the wonderful one hypnotize a deep sleep onto an experience. The fragrance, than the love, honest and open, stakes everything on one card in order for his heart to conquer it with a seducer’s strength chosen. His steadfast strength is hidden in the fact that what the treasure house of the land adds to the life is not for the natural stocks his rival, we could be a match for him.
