Edit 17/07/15.
I decided to give this one another go and thank god I did as I no longer get a blast of vanilla. I’m amazed, if I didn’t know I would have said it was standard opium edp, not the original but an acceptable reformulation.
Very often I wish I didn’t know pre reformulated perfumes existed as sometimes we remember things being better unless we have a vintage to compare to and unfortunately I knew nothing about reformulations until recently. Way back when I first asked a ysl rep about my new bottle not smelling like my old one, she put it down to my perfume being older and denied it changing. How I wish she had been honest and I would have stockpiled somehow . Back then I only wore opium and moved to Angel as I knew opium wasn’t the same any more. I still remember the original and miss her greatly and the quest to find a replacement signature continues.
Original review.
I made the mistake of buying this thinking it was the normal edp in a new bottle. While it does seem like opium I don’t like the vanilla and it doesn’t have the same longevity or sillage on me. Probably only lasts a couple of hours as opposed to all day with the regular version. Still it is opium and recognisable as such, I’m just not a fan of vanilla and I have plenty of it in black opium. I have learned not to buy before seeing what fragrantica has to say first. I will wear it but look forward to finishing the bottle and buying the real thing.

I had heard good things about last years Gold 2013 collector’s edition Opium.. Some said it was like a cross between the vintage Opium and the reformulated Opium.. Unfortunately I could not find a bottle of it to save my life, anywhere! Could not even find it online! So to see they are making another one when the first one had never even been properly released is a bit odd.. The notes in this new one also sound very disappointing.. Opium without the myrrh? Opium without all the spices and exotic resins? I guess this will be a even more watered down Opium.. What a shame! YSL is really up to some odd things recently.. Instead of releasing a million and one flankers why not just bring back the real thing?
