As this was George Washington’s cologne of choice, I had pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, I was let down.
I was expecting a classic EDC, and I got that in the open. It’s got a lovely citrus and floral open with a hint of rosemary that’s quite refreshing. However, it lasts only a few minutes before turning into a rather strange musty herbal-floral scent. Far too many great EDC’s out there. This unfortunately isn’t one of them.
This is a skin scent on me, with average longevity (a couple of hours).

Talk about “bang for your buck”! This cologne lasts forever and ever (isn’t it weird how that varies so much from one person to the next?) and I think part of it has to do with the tenaciousness of notes like orange flower and jonquil. However; this blend isn’t necessarily strong in a verdant or spicy way, just distinctive and persistent.
I say it’s not strong because it’s not strong like a powerfully projecting modern scent, it simply renews its orange blossom and neroli freshness throughout the day (fresh in the style of Muelhen’s 4711), has an incense-y base like “Nag Champa”, plus the herbal, kerosene-esque briskness of classic, “Pear’s” soap.
It’s astringent, herbal and castille-soapy in a way that I totally would’ve expected from the 1700’s: Rosemary, lavender and citronella florals were natural pest repellents and I imagine keeping bugs away was a big goal of personal hygiene.
While the florals are heavy and rich in ‘No.6″, there’s an underlying aromatic astringency to it that I like so much. This is apothecary-heavy, like a distilled herbal rub not like a melange of the chemical potions of a mall counter.
“No.6” is unisex in the way classic soap often is. It has the pleasant, ashy undertones mixed with herbs and a non-typical white floral blend that to modern noses, reads as simply refinement not “man” or “woman” specifically.
If you’re partial to distinctive, herbal soapy blends with longevity, you’ll appreciate the affordable “No.6”.

This stuff doesn’t last at all. It’s even short-lived for a “classical” eau de cologne, though it’s not as dilute to start with as 4711 is. Plus it smells like sprite or 7-up to me at first, and then turns into weird musty florals, geranium or something, and makes me envision a flowering garden shrub that’s dead and just starting to rot. I’m sure it’s not bad for 1780-whatever, but I’ve tried too many interesting EdCs, and EdC-esque EdTs, to really use this regularly. As is so often the case with real EdCs, the first few minutes are lively and exhilarating enough that I just had to keep it around, though it’s contemporary 4711 seem less rough around the edges. I prefer Monsieur de Givenchy on the sweeter side, and Burberry Weekend on the drier side.

This has to be one of the best aftershaves to splash on after a DE shave. Smells amazing but very hard to find??? Come on Massey keep up with the demand!

I first gave this to my husband some 30 or so years ago as I thought that he, who is adverse to putting anything scented on himself, would actually wear it. Not only will he wear it, he LOVES it! And it remains the only scent he will wear. And it suits him! It is somewhat upbeat and fresh, but with enough depth to ground it on him as it settles right into his skin. My husband is an Ivy Leager with a keen sense of history, and I think the fact that George Washington wore this scent appeals to him. It seems to last on him and I also like it on him. I just bought him refils of it plus the soap for Christmas.

This is the Summeriest of Summer smells, but also reminds me of Christmas cake. Being Australian, this isn’t strange to me.
I like this, but I don’t think it’s a very good cologne. Does that even make sense? It appeals to me personally, but is not of particularly high quality. In fact I’d say the quality is pretty bad, all things considered. It is an old-world concept with a dystopian chemical edge. If you like it, you like it like your favourite 50s B-movie.
For God’s sake, don’t try the scented talcum powder. It’s vile.

Do you like the freshness of 4711? Do you like Nag Champa? Then you’ll love Number Six from Caswell Massey. It’s basically a citrusy floral scent that has the freshness of a classic eau de cologne but with the added warmth of something that reminds me of benzoin and firangipani. The drydown on this is exquisite and on the right person, approaches a creamy, gourmand-like quality. Longevity is about 3-4 hours. A very unique composition.
