I remember really liking this back when I was first launched (was 22) but beings it borders a more mature realm thought it would smell to old on me..but last night ugh I smelled it on some foreign guy who I ended up making out with..lol tmi sorry..but I fell right back in love with it..& now being 28 & the fact he was just 23 & wearing it think I was silly to not get it then but its deff. a go for me now & it has a lot of my fav. notes in it so will deff. be snagging up a bottle soon.

    Davvero buono, Consigliatissimo.

Initially soft bergamot which is shrouded in spice and pepper. Overall it’s very big and cumulatively a powder scent. After 15 mins or so a very powdery rose, slightly sickly sweet but there is depth it’s just over powering. This is one or two squirts max. I like it because it makes a stance this is not messing around. After half an hour we have some dry down patchouli, light pepper with resinous amber. There is more going on than my novice nose can identify but it’s great feminine up front but base is alluring and to be honest unisex. I’m fan despite the initial powdery blast, I am lucky to have a couple of bottles and love this as a Autumn / Winter scent.
Update ….there is leather but it takes time subtle…

This smells similar to Narciso Rodriguez for Him.
    Dracula’s cologne…animalistic, amber-ish, dark roses.

Another beautiful male scent, other TF frags are too flowery for me, like all the orchid ones he created.

Oh, the dark powdery sweetness! I was hoping for some more civet and leather, but as it is, it appears almost gourmand. A dusty slice of rum and chocolate cake in an empty church, served on a leather plate. Patchouli and powdery iris do appear to play the main part, but there’s a lot more going on.
There are similarities to Dior Homme (due to the powdery iris and leather) and its flankers, but Noir has some additional “grime”, which takes it to a different territory. Guerlain Shalimar seems to be a closer parallel.
I can imagine it working pretty well in theory, but in reality, I find it lacking a clear direction. To my nose, there are just too many notes competing, powder with resins, animalics with gourmand. That is not to say that it doesn’t convey a certain impression — it does. On a man, there’s something kinky and uncompromisingly hedonistic about TF Noir. On a woman, it would probably appear more natural. But I wouldn’t say it’s a “grandma scent”, more like a fragrance for an aggressive seductress.
I guess I’m trying to say that I wish it had either more balls or more classy elegance. As it is, there’s either too little or too much of everything.

This perfume is a call to a dark and cold room,a room of dirty thoughts and hot passions.
Noir is mystical, dark, deep and sophisticated scent.
This is the most beautiful patchouli. I wear this perfume in winter,at night and when I want to be seductive.
    Performance is excellent.

Smells like a vampire. Not like the metro sexual kind of vampire, but like the old one, that has been in his coffin for centuries. He is old, smelling like Noir, but the virgins will not resist his charm, and he knows it.
Elegant, mature and distinctive fragrance for gentlemen, not for boys.

Way tooooo overwhelming , found it to be pretty off putting. The only cool thing about this scent is that the liquid is red, which is cool I guess.

I’m 23 and I like this but most definitely a mature scent right off the bat there is that blast of patchouli. The best way I could describe this fragrance is a version of Lagerfeld photo with a soft edge but not super soft. Just enough to not be not extremely aggressive.

I see now why some youtubers say this fragrance is polarizing.
The EDP smells to me of a smooth yet complex rose and chocolate fragrance with some resin and powder. Underneath it all a animalistic mustiness creeps out for me.
The powder comes off strange to me in the end, but this could be a seductive fragrance. I find this unisex and a more gourmand take on Oud satin mood. Oud Satin mood is probably the best recommendation for someone interested in this fragrance IMO.
I personally like CH men Prive over this and have Men of blame for the kind of mood or approach this fragrance would deserve.
Wolfsbane is a louder stranger second cousin twice removed , if you want a more wild and animalistic take on this fragrance.
Try Ummagumma if you want a more gourmand approach to this.
For me a miss and overall dislike, but I recommend you sample or smell it if you can.

the blending is beautiful, i dont love this, but i consider this frag as art.
on my skin, its very peppery in the opening, and a little bit earthy patchouli.
in the middle, the pepper is toned down, and the bitter-sweet-powdery-earthy combo filled the fragrances.
im not saying this is similar to LIDGE, but they definitely shared the same vibe.
this is more bitter and powdery than LIDGE, while LIDGE is creamier, sweeter.
this is a serious frag, looks like an fbi agent stalking their enemies on the party with black suit.

    fyi
I got a decant and love it but so strange : on clothes the divine smell fade away quickly and it become so much alike of a cheap cheap cheap (but good!) perfume I own (tutti patchouli, 4€, a powdery-ambery–vanillic-patchouli)!

  14. :

Very soft, subtly vanilla-sweet, woody, ambery, pipe tobacco and comforting. I like it a lot. I got it for myself, 100ml EDP, all black flacon, even though it’s labeled for men. I think it works perfectly as unisex. I haven’t worn it for a while and today am enjoying it like it is the first time. Very nice to have in a collection, something for when you are feeling like going home again (even though apparently you can’t?:))

on my skin this cologne turns into peppery-vanilic-ambery-patchouli scent, which is surprisingly better than expected as I was afraid it is going to be much sweeter (I don´t like most of sweet scents)…I don´t get almost any iris except for the faint powdery accord, pepper is the key player here. Longevity and projection are both very good (I get some 12-14hrs, but my bottle is probably an older batch as I was keeping it in my wardrobe for several years without using it = can´t speak for current releases).

My husband got a sample of this tonight to try. Without thinking, the first thing I blurted out was “you smell like my mom!”, a woman in her 50’s who wears patchouli exclusively.
It smells like a mix of straight patchouli and all her makeup and lotions. So for my husband, it’s a hard “no”. Maybe my mom will like it, though?

  17. :

I personally think this is a have in your arsenal.
This fragrance, to put it in a nutshell, smells the way you think Tom would smell in his ad for this. That serious, dark, subtle and classy smell.
This is good for the cooler times for sure and definitely, for suit times. You can pull this off when being casual but, when you smell this, you will get that James Bond, Dark Suit event type of time to wear this.

I was actually curious about the note civet on the perfume. Perhaps this civet note that causes this perfume smells dark, mysterious and animalic.

This is another divisive one that I really like.
It strikes me as a close relative to another divisive one, Midnight in Paris – the primary differences being that dominant lush patchouli, the leather being toned down to more of a supporting role, and the nice pepper blend that tickles the senses on the boundaries, particularly in the opening.
But the balsamic, powdery heart of Noir really does remind me quite vividly of MiP (which I still struggle to understand the reasoning behind its discontinuation considering how it vanished from stock so quickly after word got out).
I agree with those below who say it’s difficult to pick ideal scenarios for its use – I like to wear it as a cool/cold weather formal due to the warmth of the patchouli and the fact that I do limit my use of powdery scents almost exclusively to Fall/Winter, but I also think it’s a good date-night scent and would use it in that manner if my wife didn’t have such an aversion to patchouli – for that reason I just use it for work or around the house when she is traveling (Esencia by Loewe is my other cold-weather patchouli-heavy scent that I only bust out during this time).
Definitely NOT a blind-buy candidate so try before you buy, but there are many out there who will love it – and to me it’s also right in the center of the unisex spectrum.
Also keep in mind, this only has projection of more than a foot within the first hour of application but it actually has a lot of staying power in the light-projection to skin scent phases, clearly detectable on me about 11-12 hours later; The extreme flanker maintains projection about twice as long- but interestingly only 5-6 hours as a skin scent – and of course it’s more of a straight gourmand than a powdery balsamic like this one.

I am very disappointed of this fragrance. I do not know if it was stronger years ago, but new batches are a joke. My batch it is A87 which according to checkosmetics it is manufactured in July 2017.
I applied 4 sprays and I got a soft projection first hour and then for another 2-3 hours really closer to skin.
Although I like the smell I will never buy it again.

Currently testing both TF Noir and TF Noir Extreme…have not gotten to the Extreme as of this writing, so here goes for the ‘garden variety’ Noir….
Thought-provoking to say the least…Opening is a strange chemical quagmire…couldn’t put a finger on any particular note save maybe vanilla…and possibly a citrus…hmmmm…familiar, but too early to judge. One-half hour later it struck me…this is an attempt to duplicate Habit Rouge EDP…yes…now I sense it…rose, vanilla, citrus..Since I’ve owned Habit Rouge in the past and found it to be an intriguing fragrance begging for the proper scenario in which to be worn (possibly a morning in court defending your client?), I’ll pass. I have higher hopes for the Extreme flanker…maybe….

I am very disappointed with this fragrance. The smell disappears within 2 hours. There are fragrances under 10 euros that persist longer! About the way it smells, for me, Tom Ford Noir is a Dior Homme Intense with incense notes. Thumbs down for TF.

Tried this at the Galleria Macy’s in Houston, TX. I get the patchouli, iris, amber and vanilla. There are some florals, powder, a bit of an animalic leather and a touch of sweetness. Reminds me of Dior Homme or Homme Intense.
Only lasted a couple of hours on me before becoming soft. Barely anything left at five hours. Sillage and projection are light. Better in cooler weather and more formal situations. It’s a little sexy but would be okay at work since it’s soft. This is a nice, unisex, maybe feminine scent but too pricey for such weak performance. It’s a shame because I enjoy more “feminine” masculine scents and this is a good composition. The bottle looks nice!

I believe it’s definitely masculine. Violet, dark, love hearts. I live in Norway where the seasons are very different from each other, and this is the only perfume I feel I can use at all times, every day.

UPDATE: Been wearing this all day now, definitely too much powder. It’s a pleasant barbershop powder vs a baby powder, but the powder is prominent and lingers all day. I also get a vanilla/brown sugar note that comes through which makes the powdery note a bit sweeter. Deep sniffs you can smell the patchouli, and a very faint hint of sweet musk. There is some sweet spice as well, but this is leaning very feminine on me. I could definitely see this fragrance on a confident woman who is out at night. This just definitely isn’t for me.
I really want to like this one, but getting past the “baby powder” opening is really tough for me. This reminds me a lot of Burberry Brit for men….maybe not in comparing the notes, but definitely that powder that just lingers all day. There are elements of TF Noir that I really enjoy, but I’m not sure if I could wear this all day. I’m currently wearing it right now at work to test it and the powder element is just overpowering. If you smell up close, you can really get some of the other notes that are in this, and it does become quite pleasant. There is definitely patchouli in there and I love that as I’m a big fan of patchouli, but the backing of the powder is still making this difficult for me to wear. I’m hoping for a nice woody dry down that shows some of the base notes a bit better.

TF are not bad fragrance but it is not something that i will have every day,,,maybe once in a month just for change as it more UNISEX fragrance then MEN’s…last about 6-8h but price is over the roof for 50ml bottle…

    Longevity 8/10
    Sillage 7/10

Smells more feminine than masculine to my nose, but that’s a good thing if you’re looking for something genderbending. Initially it’s very powdery and vanillic, a sweet, warm scent, especially compared to most fragrances geared towards men. Noir is also super soft for a Tom Ford perfume; most are intense and in your face, but this one is subtle. Lasting power is pretty good, projection is not. Noir dries down to patchouli and powder, so it’s not quite as feminine as it is in the beginning. Kind of reminds me of Angel and L’air du Desert Marocain, my favorite Tom Ford so far.

  29. :

    4 out of 5

The top has a big Zino vibe to it but it’s just for the first few minutes.
The second stage is powder but masculin enough.
The final and longest lastin stage….I haven’t smelt Shalimar or the Prada so it can’t remind me of those two. But it does remind of something sooooo much and can not figure it out. DHI and LiDGE came to mind but i’ll have to check it.
Lasting power over 10 hours and that’s whith a shower. Projection is one of the best in my colection, one small spray and wifey can smell it from the kitchen.
Awesome scent. Not for boys. Not for hot weather. Not for the gym.

Tom Ford Noir has been my signature scent for over 4 years. The fragrance is simply incredible. Does it have similarities to Habit Rouge? Yes! Is it a Guerlain inspired fragrance put out for the masses by Tom Ford? Yes! But this is a classical fragrance none the less. Orientals like this aren’t easily obtained in the realm of designer fragrances these days. Fragrances like this smell of class and distinction. There is an ethereal quality which makes it smell powerful and evocative of sexiness. A very sophisticated and complex man would wear this. A modern masterpiece.

  31. :

    3 out of 5

To me its starts with a peppery, violet and sweet smell.
After a while its like the dry down on DH intense, heavy on the iris and vanilla. A little to sweet according to me, but i do receive compliments almost every time i wear it.
Almost all fragrances seems to disappear on my skin but when i apply this on clothing it stays all day.
    Smell 8/10
    Long 8/10 (on clothing)
Sillage 9/10 (all i need, within arms reach)
The frageance overall does not smell cheap or feel to worn out.

  32. :

How are people claiming this is weak? This is one of the stronger fragrances I own.
This is a mature, classy fragrance, best suited for office in the cooler months. Iris and patchouli are really the main players here with the amber to round out the base. I’m not sure if some of the newer bottles have been reformulated, but my bottle from 3 years ago is really a strong performer. Among the best in my collection. Projection is super strong for the first hour, then still pretty strong for the next 4-5 hours.

  33. :

Who ever tried Zino Davidoff will find a TF Noir a joke.
Tom Ford tried to create something like Zino scent-note but it was total failure. Noir is so weak, without any character, nothing special, a bit sweety, and that’s all.
On the other side Zino simply shout: “I am a classy man, I am the Boss and I smell as such.” Actually Hugo boss should smell like Zino Davidoff in order to be Bossy.
I do not recommend buying of this perfume because it is waste of money for paying of some designers attempts. If you realy care how do you smell and like that certain scent-note, then you should try above mentioned Zino Davidoff, Hugo Boss OUD and Armani Code, they are all way better, more lasting and more impressive then TF Noir.

  34. :

Surprisingly weak. Almost an instant skin scent. It smells ok but after 8 minutes I can smell the bones in my wrist more than I can smell this fragrance. I blind bought a full bottle for a relatively low price so I’ll just do 20 sprays each time I use it until it’s gone.

Sometimes I rush my wife out the door for a date. She brings a little bag of makeup and dolls herself up in the mirror during the car ride. That little bag smells like old perfume, cheap makeup, and something powdery. The familiarity should probably be something I adore. However, I hate it. Smells like utter disharmony. Decidedly feminine. Would be a perfect gift for my grandmother if I never wanted to smell her again.

If I knew nothing about scents, you could tell me this was a flanker of Dior Fahrenheit, and I wouldn’t doubt you one bit. There’s a certain dry, leathery, slightly under-sweetened, musky quality to it that I like in the same way that I like the original Fahrenheit. With that being said, I don’t think it’s any more similar to Fahrenheit than Fahrenheit Le Parfum was. It has a certain dark, powdery feel to it reminiscent of Black Orchid, but the sweetness and muskiness set it apart.
Today I chose to wear this to sleep in after a long, long night out. Why? It’s relaxing to me. Dark and calming. Unfortunately, a lot of rich pompous jerks at my old job have ruined this scent for me, so I just can’t bring myself to wear it out too often. Luckily for me, they didn’t ruin Noir Extreme, which I happen to love much more. 🙂

there is something very sexy about noir; its like the equivalent of perfume crossdressing. the masculine features (patchouli, spice, leather, opoponax, vetiver) pop out subtly amongst the classically feminine balmy, sweet powder. the end result isn’t very feminine, although a definite nod to fragrances like shalimar, but rather something else–a third gender of sorts. It’s all a little off limits, a bit naughty. i’m not sure if it was for noir, but there was a review for a fragrance along the lines of this describing the scent as “waking up the morning after a night spent with a cougar and smelling her fragrance on you” and thats a perfect description. amazing quality, a bit more depth than amber intense for homme.
love or hate this/tom ford, his fragrances have definite personality and an aura of their own in an increasingly flatlining designer fragrance market.

Black orchid’s “son” is the perfect way to describe it… It’s almost as if this should have been the Tom Ford original starter fragrance than the one presented just to match black orchid when it was released
The tuber note / patchouli / spices are the same as black orchids… Honestly this fragrance would’ve been more popular if it was released in 2006 with black orchid

When I smelled this for the first time, I instantly got happier and that never happened to me before! Definitely one of the best fragrances I’ve smelled ever. No joke. I was looking for this scent for a long time. It’s not just one scent you smell, it evolves a lot during the day making it a mysterious yet classy smell. The Extreme version was not till my liking at all, they smell totally different. The lady at the perfume store told me that Tom Ford is a very exclusive brand, but absolutely worth the money. It stays on my skin all day long and that is exactly what I want. Highly recommended for the more formal, musky type of guy. 9.5/10

Agree completely with mmmmmgood. This is TOTALLY the male Shalimar. I don’t get any Habit Rouge vibe despite the fact that HR is the male counterpart to Shalimar. Slightly less powdery than Shalimar and slightly less femme than Shalimar, but still very Shalimar and very big. Definitely formal and for special occasions only imo. I prefer the edt, and find the edp unwearable.

  41. :

Personally I find this to be a very sweet fragrance, sometimes even too sweet for me and I’m a woman! It really reminds me of Dior’s Fahrenheit with a powdery dry down. I have not tried Habit Rouge yet so I can’t comment on their similarities. Very nice for the right occasion but I tend to prefer Noir Femme which is nowhere near as sweet, oddly enough.

    Nein! Nein! Nein! Nein!
Du weißt, ich will nicht unhöflich sein, aber das riecht nach dem Anus eines schmutzigen Tieres. Unangenehm wie Scheiße.
So yeah, put THAT in Google translator and see what you get.
But on a more objective level, there are some notes in here that are rather tolerable. Iris, rose, leather, amber, vanilla – Just don’t smell it too close.
The whole thing gives off a distinct Oscar pour Lui, or Antaeus vibe. In other words – syrupy, classy, old man-ish stuffiness. Gross.
My advice – go for Noir Extreme. It’s heads and animalic tails above this one, if you know what I mean. Word.

My first Tom Ford scent. Got it at Scentbird blind, for 14.95 it makes blind buying not that bad of a proposition. A lot of violet and herbs in the beginning and settles to powdery, vanilla and amber with the herbs and florals peeking through.
Very surprised no one has said this but it smells very similar to John Varvatos platinum, Its not as good or long lasting as platinum on my opinion. If I didn’t already own platinum I’d buy this in full but I find it very redundant, I’ll use up my small purchase and be done with it. I plan to blind buy noir extreme though.

Wow, I haven’t worn TF Noir edp for a while, and I feel so glad it’s in my, pritty much completed collection of best possible 50 fragrances.
When I first was explorring the classics, like Habit Rouge, I really enjoyed them and have some, like Hermes Equipage in my permanent collection.
TF Noir edp, is like those things I do like about the classics, oakmoss, or tree moss now, geranium, carnation, sandalwood, fresh spices like corriander, they are all in Noir. No moss listed, but I am sure I am getting something like oakmoss in this.
Noir has a great classic vibe, but it doesn’t feel old either, it has clean quality blending, some nice balsamic and woody richness, yet it has a nice distinct fullness of spices and other complimentary notes. It does get a bit powdery, but not as much as Noir edt.
In comparing to Noir edt: I used to like the edt more for the unique, fresh minty opening, and maybe I still like the opening of EDT more, and it’s a better choice for warmer months. I like Noir edp more now, because the longevity is better, not great for an edp, but better than the poor longevity of Noir edt.
My skin absorbs frags a lot, I get 50℅ less longevity than most people I think.
If I had to take my best 25 fragrances, I would allways keep my Noir. I gave away my Habit Rouge, allthough still very nice, I do think Noir is very close, and a better classier choice.
    Rating: 8.5/10

I hope to update this review later (this is just based on three strip tests and two tests on skin). Certainly deserving of the comparisons to Habit Rouge, but different also. The opening is really quite a confusing medley of sensations… Probably best experienced via a more open spray (mine was too close to the flesh), it is overlaps fresh, spicy, sweet and pungent notes in a blend that is almost indigestible (actually, suggestive of digestion, interestingly, a bit mouth-watering) As the fresh notes (mainly bergamot tinged with violet leaf) settle down, a dense, clay-like powdery floral musk comes on — not a single accord but a closed fistful, delivering the sensation of something heavy and well made (the car door closing with a solid ‘clunk’).
A civet note (yes, I get this) supporting a tangy geranium, tingles around the edges and works with an amber to add a touch of humanity (the Guerlainesque good humour) to the density. The ‘colour’ of the drydown on me is opaque like pale but complex gouache (a little more translucent then it appears), a rosy-pink-buff-grey-violet thunderhead rolling over a dry highway, whereas Habit Rouge’s colour is more translucent, rose-toned and gilt around the edges.
Longevity of the rich powdery base, with its fantasies or orientalism and a whiff of the cosmetics bag (‘lipstick’ iris and HR’s labdanum leather), is excellent, though less trail that creamy aura. I admire this matte fragrance because it is not afraid to convey presence: unctuous not molecular, and, replete rather than ‘minimalist.’ I still prefer HR EDT for its playful-suave blend of aristocratic savoir-faire and Mediterranean finesse, but if you wanted to communicate less vulnerability and send the message that richness = riches, you might give TF Noir a try.

Today I deleted TF Noir from my “fragrances I want” list, after having tried it for the second time on skin.
TF is very bold and heavy. Quality wise it is a well done fragrance, but I can only imagine a middle aged, voluptuous, short haired, extravert woman wearing this. Not for me.

This is horrible. I hate it. I don’t know what it is in here, but it smells disgusting. This scent is repulsive to me as a woman, I would avoid men who were wearing this.
It’s not fresh, it’s not sweet, it’s not citrus-y…. it’s animalic and not in a good way. I also hate the powdery-ness of this fragrance. It’s off-putting.
There are so many notes listed here on Fragrantica, but I’m not getting any of the top or mid notes listed. This fragrance just goes straight to the base notes to me, and the base notes are not appealing. And I’m not really picking up amber or vanilla here. That would actually sweeten and warm this fragrance. Instead, we are stuck with a very unappealing mix.
On the drydown you finally get some patchouli and incense, but the main lasting core of the fragrance is a musky stank.
In it’s defense, it IS a complicated and layered fragrance that develops and changes over time on your skin.
If you want a Tom Ford fragrance, you can do much better than this. It’s repulsive.

Tom Ford tried to make his own version of vintage Habit Rouge, but failed. Also, the vanillic resin/patchouli theme was already well explored in a more modern approach by the excellent Prada Amber Intense. So, I see no point in owning this perfume whatsoever.
Overall, I agree with @ralopa: does not worth it.

I have a bottle of this EDP even though I hate powdery fragrances. When I first tried it, I absolutely hated the scent but once it dried down, the powdery aspects became more and more subtle and the fragrance starts to mellow and become something different. There’s something very sweet in this fragrance and I can’t put my finger on it. It slightly reminds me of Valentino Uomo. Either way, a solid everyday fragrance.

I was hoping this would smell like Guerlain Shalimar or Habit Rouge in some aspects as the reviews mentioned in here. But it’s not true!
All I’ve got is about a weakened in performance and less good in quality version of those two Guerlain’s offerings. Although the structure of Noir EdP seems rich and sophisticated, but the scent is not what it should turn out to be, per se.
The opening is like a cheap jarring oilpaint and acts as a very artificial and very thin patchouli smell, and then gradually develops into a sort of less smooth version of Shalimar/HR. It finally has something in common with Guerlain at least, Right? That is applaudable! LOL!
Longevity and projection are definately much less than Shalimar/HR as well. This just like a fake Venus de Milo with prosthetic arms put on. I don’t recommend you guys to waste your money. Not worth it!Rating: 6.0/10

The patchouli and spice are good but you have to wade through the old lady perfume/baby powder opening which for me lasted an hour and a half to almost two hours. Again the spice and patchouli are great but not worth the old lady vibe. My wife immediately thumbs downed it and even after the 3 hour mark couldn’t come to change her vote. We are fans of Tom Ford and I personally love black orchid on her. This just doesn’t come close to the wow factor we had with that fragrance. On her the powder lasted all the way through. For my skin the patchouli really showed up in a good way but I can’t see myself wearing this ever again. If I could skip the first two hours and just wear the heart and dry down I would be giving a totally different review.
    Definitely try before you buy

This scent differs a lot on people because it has so many notes in it. On me it I dont get any vanilla, baby powder, or any real floral notes. It is all Civet and Vetiver, almost an ambergris note of saltines and cucumber, even though it is not mentioned. I could not imagine a woman wearing this. Also the longevity is amazing, I can smell it in my laundry basket almost a week after. This is a definite TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

Noir is an excellent fragrance – for me personally it has a vague similarity to the odour profile of CK One, but way, WAY better – classier, more seductive and a lot better in both projection and longevity. Subtly rounded, I get a talcum powdery note for the first twenty minutes or so before it turns into a creamy patchouli based scent that lasts for ages and gets plenty of compliments. There isn’t much in this price range that feels so refined (not that this is the only yardstick for measuring fragrances of course) so it’s definitely worth checking out.
