It makes sense that I fell for this beauty, it’s a dead ringer for Santal 33, another scent I enjoy. I didn’t make the connection until I logged onto Fragrantica. I just knew I had to have a sample. My local Sephora sales rep helped me out and made an in-store sample.
I’ve never picked up a pickle juice vibe from Santal 33 and I don’t pick it up in this composition either. They are both a creamy wood scent with spices. This is a good performer too, I get over 4 hours before it turns to a skin scent.
This is a review for the edp (there’s also an oil version). I find it a comforting, everyday kind of scent, at a much more accessible price point than le Labo.

Definitely smells like Santal 33 at the dry down just softer with less silage. I tried the perfume thought it was weak and got the oil, which is fine for my use. If you like Santal and thought it was a bit much try this.

Wonderful scent. I’ve never smelled Santal 33, so I can’t compare. But this scent is phenomenal. Clean woody, and slightly spicy. I get no pickle vibe on me at all… Just a cedar sandalwood and nutmeg goodness.
Close to Commodity Book…but it doesn’t have the cucumber note that Book has, but has a bit more nutmeg and a “starchy” smell, a bit like someone mixed in oats.
My local sephora had this… Definitely worth a try if you like woody scents. Unisex, leaning slightly masculine

Total waste of money! Watered down version of Le Labo Santal 33 with zero longevity and zero sillage! Shame shame shame!

This smells surprisingly clean to me. I’d say it’s an inseparable accord of vetiver-nutmeg, supported by cedar. Very unisex, but these are classic masculine notes.
This didn’t inspire me to any visuals. No impressive development or depth. Overall impression is that it’s a linear clean everyday wear, if clean woods is what you love.

No no no! I got this because I heard it didn’t have a pickle scent like Santal 33.
On me it does! It does not have dill listed in the ingredients so must be the sandalwood?
You’re lucky if you don’t get the pickle smell on your skin and can wear this.

This seems to be a much smarter buy than Santal 33

This is one of (if not my favorite) my favorite scents of all time. I love how it’s non gender specific so I can wear it with my more casual outfits. I put on a sample on my wrist at a shop while I traveling, but came back to the store 6 hours later to purchase it before I came back home… After I put on the sample, I couldn’t help but sniffing my wrist throughout the day because the smell lingered on and got even better as time passed by so I HAD to have it before I left.
This perfume lasts me for quite a long time (even 6-8hours later), probably because it’s oil not a perfume spray. I loved it so much I got no 9 as well because I was deciding between this one and no 9.
The only negative I will say is I think the oil gets weaker as time goes by (well I guess that’s a no brainer) because when I first got the bottle, the smell would last me forever. Now I feel like it only lasts me around 2-3 hours max.
I had it for 2 years and I still have 3/4 of the bottle left and I wear it pretty often so one bottle will last you a long time.

The comparisons to Santal 33 are accurate–both have a delicious, addictive sandalwood fragrance–but I think this is much nicer. Instead of Santal’s cucumber/pickle smell, No. 4 Bois de Balincourt has cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s warmer and sexier, and even though it’s popular, it’s not nearly as ubiquitous. I don’t really see this as a hippie fragrance, as another reviewer mentioned. I think it’s more sophisticated than that, though still very accessible and wearable. I think it will work year round, but cinnamon and nutmeg are cool weather scents to me, so I’ll be wearing this in fall/winter.

No.04 Bois de Balincourt Perfume Oil; Botanical, woodsy, spicy, unisex. A quality hippy fragrance to love or loathe.
Upon rolling the oil onto the skin there’s very little scent, some slight cedar maybe, an oiliness too. This needs time to warm with the body. 10 minutes in and a botanical, quite green sandalwood presents itself almost disguised as fig leaf. This sandalwood/fig leaf accord slowly dissipates with time to reveal nutmeg, nutmeg and more nutmeg.
Just like ground nutmeg, the heart is slightly moist (that’ll be the vetiver) and dusty thanks to the cinnamon. To smell this on the wrist where applied is off-putting. The eventual dry down is much more subtle – more likeable too – projecting the occasional whiff of intoxicatingly comforting amber and dry woodiness.
Spicy, earthy, dusty. No.04 Bois de Balincourt is an interesting fragrance, just not for me. I see this appealing to the LA/Bondi/Burning Man crowd.
This can only be a warm weather fragrance in my opinion. The oil has so little scent and projection in the cold.
Longevity is very good at 8-10 hours during which sillage wafts moderately.

Gorgeous fragrance. I’m extremely picky and had pretty much given up on scent until I found this. I wear it every day and strangers regularly stop me to ask what I’m wearing (I once had three people ask in one day). That’s never happened to me. I especially love the dry down — the amber is beautiful.
