The first word that came to mind when i smelt this perfume is sexy. It’s the smell of a warm body on a hot summer night; brimming with desire. I love the spices and delicate nuance of the ylang ylang and lily with neither one overpowering the other. Just perfect IMO. As always with this house in particular longevity could be better. Thanks to TheSheppardess for my sample.

    @ Matt Oldham.
Is there really any reason for you to be so bloody obnoxious?
“Seems like a really deranged concept that could only come out of Britain.”
You do realise stock is a flower, don’t you? Or are you assuming it’s something in which to cook or pour over your dinner?
You don’t like stock? Why bother to comment at all? You clearly haven’t smelled the perfume and only stopped by to troll.
Keep your prejudiced attitude away from Fragrantica, please.

Starts with a blast of spice (probably the cloves) like a cheap drugstore cologne. After about ten minutes it softens into a gentler powdery spice, but it’s not for me.

I was really excited about this one. I love stock flowers and I was hoping it would smell like that.
    It doesn’t.
It is a heady collection of night blooming florals with a bit of peppery spices and some notes that just feel like vintage perfumes. The flowers are very front and center with the spice supporting them — kind of like the spiciness of violet or carnation or my stock flowers. I get a good amound of musk, benzoin, and sandalwood rounding out the perfumey headiness.
As it dries down it gets creamier and more vanilla with the sandalwood staying strong. The floral doesn’t go away and is more peppery and powdery. Like violet, ylang ylang and heliotrope. At 4 hours in it seemed strong on unlikely to fade. I napped for an hour and a half. When I woke up it was gone.

This is now discontinued. Am distraught. I adore this. It absolutely smells like night scented stock wafting around on a summer night. Does not last a long time, I do not get the vanilla either more cinammon and cloves. It is beautiful.

The original Night Scented Stock was lovely! The relaunched version is not the same formula. It has been tweaked and added to…I smelled vanilla. My skin burned and showed irritation and it got really oily. Nope not for me, and I loved the old one.

I am amazed how polarized these reviews are! It’s like each is written for another fragrance, and the irony is: mine will have nothing in common with the others! :/
I can see some are perceiving this fragrance as tropical or beachy. While ylang tends to bring out such association, my first vision upon the first sniff, was an inside of a nice, little house, cozy and clean, on the shady side in the morning.
Many of the reviewers are having a punch of cloves and cinnamon in their faces. I don’t get that either. What I got was a powder puff in my nose. Heartbreakingly beautiful powdery flowers, color lilac. I am really not familiar with that stock herb, or I just don’t recognize it, but I think I can identify the violet, heliotrope and the lily in there.
One reviewer labeled it as a “very 70s-style floriental”. I’d say this one might have been created easily many years, or even decades before that! It is that classic, it’s that timeless! It is something your grandmother could have loved and worn back in the days, or it might have been her lifelong signature. However, I can easily imagine it to be your daughter’s favorite: the one she connects with “mom” in her little head and will have a nostalgic reference to it for all the years to come as she grows up herself. It could make an olfactory universal intergenerational link in the female side of a family.
Oh, and there is also a reviewer, who cannot see how come this genderless fragrance is labeled “for women” and that there’s no evidential “femininity”. To me, this is the archetypical feminine fragrance! Such a gentle, floral, powdery scent brings only female figures to my mind, and an image of a home with an obvious female touch and decor (the floral wallpapers, the embroidered curtains, white china, vase in the middle of the dining table and a lace cover).
Even though one of my favorite reviewers says it’s a winter, even Christmas-time appropriate, this brings the images and the sounds of late spring and early summer to my imagination.
I can relate, though, to some parts of Edmondsee’s review, but mostly with Lunolickaya’s perception, yet while she despises the “mom’s old lipstick” impression, that is exactly what makes my heart sing! I think it’s charming beyond words. It is as feminine and classic, as Chanel No5 (the powdery), Lipstick Rose (the sweet, cosmetic violet) and Drole de Rose (gentle and soapy) and I deeply love all of these!
    (Thank you, Nexangelus! <3 )

I received a sample from Nexangelus for which I am very grateful. Ive been curious about this one for some time. Its definitely spicey with the opening of cloves and ylang. It is also sweet but the sweetness wains a bit with time. I see what others mean about the soapiness but that also wains over the first hour. I like it. Tonka and the heliotrope I imagine are supposed to add a vanilla element but I dont think they register very much. Its definitely first and foremost spicey. Sadly like nearly all Penhaligons the sillage is moderate and the longevity poor but then again it is only an edt. Come on Penhaligon we love your fragrances but you need to make much stronger, long lasting fragrances! Britain as usual is the most imaginative. You have to bear in mind that when pushing the boundaries you dont always succeed but when you do its fantastic. Nobody liked Serge Lutens Feminite du Bois when it first arrived on the scene but it changed everything about modern perfumery for women.

When you think that nothing will surprise us in the world of perfumery, behold, it appears something different and very unprecedented that overwhelms us and makes us rethink this concept there. Penhaligon’s is more than a house that develops scents niches for joy of us mere mortals, noses lovers of different aromas that life grants us, is also an icon representing the high perfumery concepts in a sophisticated way, showing about a culture its signs and meanings manifest in their productions. Most perfume launched by the House when in contact with our skin, reminds me of the great classic musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” by Tim Burton and played brilliantly by Johnny Depp, do not ask me why because you may not have known answers them. We narrate a little about Eastern Night Scented Stock, launched in 1976 with the seem of some performers, highlighting here William Penhaligon. In the database House Penhaligons’s it is classified as feminine, yet, I can not see this femininity him nowhere in its evolution, yes, since its opening is a Spice punch in heavier and gross as possible arriving to stun the senses; nothing pleasant its output with the exaggeration of Cinnamon and Clove-India. When he goes to his heart, after about 3 hours of time in contact with the skin, it is peculiar to Penhaligon’s fragrances, ie shows the aromatic aspect which refers to the English barber decades a little distant, dense aroma, born in information in a mixture of hair tonic, newspapers, foams, powders etc., in this, you can tell fresh lilies, Ylang Ylang stalks and the magical presence of a bouquet of violets sprinkled by bubbling Vanilla. Finally, it gives a calm, but does not become female, at least I do not understand, and becomes more creamy with hints of Tonka, benzoin resin with pinches of more serious with roots of Patchouli and Vetiver a slight bump. Wow, that’s all there is Night Scented Stock Penhaligons’s, is not easy to define most interpretations of this House by fabulosidade that it boasts in his creations, however, we submit. On the possible “femininity” of Night Scented Stock, it may be the same meaning in the classic Black Orchid by Tom Ford, that is, almost no one sees more virility femininity. Fixed well for 9 h and projects satisfactorily for 6 h.

    A heady, very 70s-style floriental.
It starts of as powdery clove and cinnamon (I’m amazed at just how powdery it is in the opening), then slowly develops into a spicy ylang ylang, with the flower at the forefront.
The ylang ylang here is deliciously down and dirty. It’s that full on, tropical sexy version of the flower. Not at all creamy, none of the banana qualities. It’s all bad girl.
I much prefer this stage to the opening because I find the opening a bit synthetic. There’s something lurking behind the spices that smells a bit like plastic and it’s a little off putting to me.
The final stages offer some buttery vanilla and something that seems slightly nutty, like almond.
This is one I have to really be in the mood for or I feel overwhelmed by it and that’s it’s a bit dated. But when I am in the mood (cold nights are best), it feels sexy and bold and ultra womanly.

    Penhaligon’s Night Scented Stock
    Nature’s Scented Bath
This is the first morning of creation.
As the waxy veil of sleep lifts from my eyes, I can see a million tears of joy glistening from the multitude of flowers, bathing in the warmth of the sun on this first day on Earth. The fresh air is scented by the fragrance of ‘Bunga Kenanga’ (Malay for ylang-ylang flower) – constantly perfusing every living thing around with purity and beauty.
It is a single note scent that feels like soap from heaven, clean and soft, without the eye-stinging pungency. It goes on and on, emanating with constant strength, from the first light of day till night falls on all beings below Heaven.
What joy this is, to walk out of the bath and into the bath again, continuously.
Alas, the Queen of the Night reigns in state.

Night Scented Stock is the first Penhaligon’s I have tried. It starts off quite strong and spicy.
I’m new to perfume and can’t discern notes yet, so after putting it on I quickly ran over to the spice rack in my kitchen to take a sniff of the cloves that’ve been stashed in the back ever since a friendly guesthouse lady owner in Sulawesi gave them to me a couple of years ago. I was able to verify that the spice in the perfume’s opening is indeed clove:)
The perfume stays quite warm on my skin as it becomes more floral. The flowers are accompanied by just a hint of spiciness from the opening. They don’t smell quite as heady as the stock I remember from summers back home in Europe, but close enough to bring back the memory of those summer nights, evening chill taking over from daytime heat, night critters launching into their nightly concert, dusk slowly turning into darkness, and all the while I’m standing outside, taking in the intoxicating aroma of the stock.
Despite the strong opening the perfume stays close to the skin. It may fade away to nothing too soon if applied only once, but one reapplication seems to breathe a new life in what is already on the skin and build up the effect, so the scent holds on for some more hours afterwards.
It’s not very outstanding and probably quite forgettable, but I like it for the humbleness and familiarity of its theme.

I was looking for a fragrance with strong notes of cinnamon and ylang-ylang. I tried numerous perfumes but nothing was similar to my idea. After reading the reviews here I thought the Night Scented Stock was the one. Oh, what a disappointment it was! On me it opened to be a plain violet. It’s as dumb as my mother’s old lipstick. I can’t believe someone could sniff out spices and ylang.

It was nice, simple and flowery on me, without even a hint of vanilla. I liked it.

opens quite sharp&spicy with clove and cinnamon, which fade to a shadow within 30mins. settles into a light but sweet and a bit soapy lily and ylang ylang.

I had been wanting to try this for a while, as it was recommended to me as a vanilla scent, but I have to say, I don’t detect any vanilla.
This is a very spicy scent, and it takes a while for the floral notes to make an appearance, and then it is mostly lily and ylang ylang and a hint of powdery heliotrope. But this fragrance fades extremely fast, so you don’t get to enjoy the flowers much before its gone which I do not expect from a fragrance in this price range.

POW……..A blast of a tropical wet garden..it reminds me of my childhood in Australia.
Ylangylang and cloves in the opening. Ten minutes later Jasmine, benzoin and vanilla with a touch of patchouli. This is all I ever wanted Jardin d Bagatelle to be.
My sample…..I wish it was bigger.
These scents never last on me………..can I justify the price….. It might just break my heart and go to the top 10 of all times.

I’m not a huge fan of florals but tooka chance on this and so glad I did. I don’t actually know what NSS smells like but I don’t care either, I just love this. It smells like carnations to me, a light spicy floral really with a slight vintage feel to it. A departure from what I normally love (sweet, gourmand, orientals). Lovely.

I love the scent of stock, so I took a chance and had a relative in London send me a bottle of Night Scented Stock. It was a big risk – florals often turn into Wet Dog or Mouldy Teabag on me. I’m so glad I chanced it. The scent is a bit heavy in the midfloral notes for me until it settles down, and the base notes take over. It tends to fade very quickly on my skin, but I’m going to make good use of it. I’m especially looking forward to it as my winter scent this year.

My Nanna grew these in her front garden and I will always remember that heady sweet smell on a hot summer evening wafting towards me before I even opened the front gate! If the perfume smells remotely like my memory would definitely buy it. Guess would depend on how it behaves on my skin. Sounds lovely though.

Penhaligon NIGHT SCENTED STOCK is a heavily spiced festive and spirited fragrance which seems to me appropriate for winter-, even Christmastime. There’s a core of clove here that won’t let go, anchored as it is in benzoin. The other spices–cinnamon, tonka, vanilla–buttress the clove, and the florals are pretty difficult to tease out of this concentrated concoction.
NIGHT SCENTED STOCK is not really my cup of tea, but those looking for an assertive oriental with relatively big sillage and excellent staying power might want to give this one a try.
