Micallef Night Aoud opens with medicinal, rubbery oud, and intense, extremely concentrated fruity ylang and peach. The execution of the latter reminds me of the similar narcotic ylang-jasmine opening of Guerlain Samsara extrait and Areej Le Doré Flux de Fleur for example, but in Night Aoud, these undiluted fruity floral sweetness is further paired with the rubbery oud, resulting in a saccharine, synthetic feeling to my perception.
As the intensity of the fragrance gradually diminishes when heading into the dry down, the overwhelming sensation of synthetic sweetness becomes more manageable with time. The oud takes on a fuzzy warmth akin to saffron and its funky woodiness is relegated to the background. The main branch on which the bright sweetness of ylang and peach cling, is now a high-pitched, slightly camphorous patchouli. Although it’s still not enough to temper the sweetness, at least it doesn’t automatically conjures the artificial impression as the combination of oud’s rubberiness and fruity floral sweetness does for me.
Night Aoud becomes more and more enveloping towards the end, thanks to the steady, cocooning warmth of sandalwood, although the sharp fruity sweetness of ylang and peach never truly leaves. The sillage is moderate to soft, and the longevity is around 9 hours.
Curiously, Night Aoud doesn’t feel that dark to me, as its name might suggest. The beaming sweetness of ylang and peach actually makes it feel quite bright and cheerful. The contrast between rubbery oud and hedonistic fruity floral is also an interesting idea, although in practice, the overall effect translates being too synthetic and saccharine for my taste. If you can handle intensely fruity sweetness and are looking for a joyful rendition of oud, Night Aoud might worth a try.

I love Night Aoud, it’s gorgeous. And the bottle is the most beautiful thing!! Such a lovely ethereal spiritual colour, it makes me melt looking at it, and holding it is a pure pleasure. It’s a very sensual (in a spiritual way), warm and mysterious perfume, and has a depth and sweetness, quite a beautiful gourmand element, combined with a really rich and soft oud, juicy delicious fruit and sweet herby spicy patchouli, and a strong galbanum. It’s a wonderfully complex fragrance, and it’s like a spiritual adventure, going along unknown paths of mystery and delight for the soul. It goes on for a beautifully long time too, never getting dull or boring, and has the best most warmest dry-down! I really really love it.

(A review originally posted on MakeupAlley in 2006, I wanted to re-post it here now because I do not use MakeupAlley anymore [but have many fond memories of using it] and I am trying to get back into writing reviews, using old ‘work’ as inspiration…): Ah, my first aoud perfume (in my collection full bottle wise), this is a hard review to write because I am in love. How can one write about such a gorgeous perfume where the mustiness of aoud is so beautifully done? If I didn’t know better I would claim this was a soli-bois ;)(instead of a soliflore). Some have called aoud medicinal, and in the line of Montale parfums it has that tendency (which I ADORE)–but in Martine Micallef’s line aoud is given an elegant treatment, I haven’t had the chance to sample Rose Aoud from Micallef or her original Aoud perfume, but I am guessing they have the same refinement that I smell in this creation. This is a powdery, fungal wood bending under hot sun, but making for a fragrance which to me is like skin oozing with pheromones–its like a hot snake slithering in the sand to me. This is a hard review to write because I am unable to pick out the notes except that I know there is a high concentration of aoud, the other notes and spices would be just guesses…cinnamon? How embarrassing. Maybe someone above can help me? Simply a holy grail for me and a beautiful bottle (light blue swarovski crystals!), beautiful packaging and a BEAUTIFUL scent. Thank you Martine Micallef.

    Fun, girly oud fragrance.
It opens with a delicious, fresh, fruity blast of citrus, peach and oud. The combination of citrus + peach resembles juicy pear smell to me.
I really like this rendition of oud. Not as serious and dark as oud fragrances usually are. I liked the fact that fruity-oud aroma stayed the same without changing on my closing for a long time. The only thing, the fragrance feels to be quite synthetic.

Others claimed that they felt a very prominent peach note, but for me it wasn’t as strong as I expected, peach here gives more of the sweet, powdery feeling and doesn’t feel fruity and ripe at all.
The most dominant for me was aoud, starting sharp, but soon developing a slightly oily and leathery quality. I can’t say I enjoyed this very much as the combo of rubbery aoud and powdery peach in my book isn’t the most succesful. It dried down to a powdery and sweet amber, lasting merely 6 hours which also is slightly dissapointing as I’m used to the fact that in aoud fragrances the aoud actually lasts far longer than the first hours.
As someone already mentioned – this also doesn’t seem too “nighty”, it doesn’t have a monster silage and it’s pretty much wearable all trough day, even for office.
Worth a try, but don’t expect too much or you might end up a tiiny bit dissapointed as I was.

The oud is prominent and spicy in the opening then fades to the background. The oud is just a bit medicinal and that might turn some people off. The sweet fruit comes forward and it is the prominent note with some of the lighter woods. The oud is always in the background. This is a beautiful, truly feminine take on what can sometimes be a very overwhelming note. Must like peach to enjoy as that note is extremely prominent.

Wonderful clean, crisp, woody and fruity perfume. Another great oud-y gourmand. Micallef seems to be exceptionally good at this! I wonder if they still produce this perfume, as there is no Night Aoud on their site anymore, neither Aoud Gourmet appears to be there.
The opening is woody, spicy and smoky, however the initial blast does not last too long, and in 10 minutes Night Aoud transforms into a sweet, powdery, somehow “clean” perfume (white musk?).
I feel a lot of ylang ylang here, and of course the peach note – ripe and sunny – is the most prominent in the composition (at least to my nose) apart from aoud and sandalwood.
The drydown is all amber to me. Lasting power: around 6-8 hours, sillage: just right, won’t kill anyone 😉

Opens w/ an intense burst of aoud so I have to let it settle before nuzzling my nose into it to inhale deeply as I’m prone to do. This heaviness only lasts 5 mins tops then it goes to a lovely bright spiced peach with a surprisingly yummy and noticeable amount of nutmeg, vanilla, and a little smooth amber/patch. The sandalwood/amber/patch keeps it from ever being too fruity, which I’m somewhat picky about.
As it dries down a bit more (hr or 2) an animalic sandalwood/amber/labdanum blend becomes apparent on me, almost resembling a very soft leather tone! I’m sure the aoud is still in there contributing to the beauty of this phase that I find so smooth and delish. (At this point sniffing it too much, gettin a bit dizzy haha). The peach is almost more apricot to me; more ‘tart’ almost, which I suppose is the citrus influence. (Note that I really dislike citrus unless it’s well blended, so this must be truly well done to merge so nicely as to seem like part of the peach.)
My verdict’s still out on longevity and sillage, but it is SO yummy up close once it hits that drydown phase! To me the aoud isn’t very apparent at this point, just enough to be interesting and unique but not enough to scream “WOAH that’s aoud!”. Will ask friends to report on sillage soon *thumbs up*

Am I the only one thinking this is not only a night perfume? On me it settles downn to a soft and gentle aroma that I could wear it during the day without problem.

This is a scent for the depth of a cold, winter’s night.
It radiates a sensuous, dark, mysterious warmth.
I find it surprisingly gourmand – maybe it’s the be the nutmeg, peach and vanilla combination.
Words are slightly inadaquate to capture Night Oud’s
appealing aura. Try it and see if you agree.

Among this luxury brand Autumne and Night Aoud seem interesting to me for an evening. However, they are different. If Autumne was born to be liked, it wraps you with semi-sweet warmth of spicies, my favourite patchouli and woody notes (Adult and respectable version of CH by Carolina Herrera? Could be), Night Aoud is meant for a provocative, insolent and adventurous character. It’s full of musk, that kind of musk that is associated with plutonium radiance – a bit pungent one, I’ve been recently strangely attracted to. It makes a perfume dark withouth being exactly dark or heavy like most orientals. One can also find it in Black Angel by Mark Buxton. So, if I ever feel like buying a juice with that specific musk – I will be choosing between those two. While Black Angel is unisex and seems more wearable, Night Aoud is more creamy, complicated, but more pungent too. The longetivity of both is very good.
