Description
“I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys.” (Song of Songs 2:1). In the Bible the rose is mentioned in Sirach as an attribute of the Wisdom which grows: “…like a palm in Engeddi, and like rosebushes in Jericho” (Sirach 24:14).
In another passage of the same book which urges us to praise God, we read: “Listen to me, faithful children, and blossom like a rose growing near a running stream.”(Sirach 39:13).
In Christian iconography, this flower, for its beauty and fragrance, is often evoked to indicate Heaven. Cultivated in Palestine from ancient times, the rose is a flower that more than any other lends itself to metaphorically represent the events of the Christian religion: the pain and suffering through which eternal life is reached. The Church itself is sometimes referred to in the Bible as the Rose of Sharon: its thorns are the sins which stained it over the centuries and, more generally, those of all believers. The thorn-less rose or Mystic Rose is another name to invoke the Virgin Mary, to highlight her conception without original sin (“without thorns”). The rose is the Marian flower par excellence, but it is also associated with many Saints such as Francis; a rose without thorns is planted in the church in Assisi.
Characteristics: a symbol of beauty, elegance and purity. Queen of flower gardens, its sweet aroma is universally known and is one of the main and oldest ingredients of the art of perfumery.” – a note from the brand.
