I was walking home from coffee with an old friend when I found a “free” box by the side of the road. To my utter astonishment, it contained five bell-shaped Avon bottles WITH perfume still in them. In addition, there were lead-crystal bowls and I grabbed two of those as well.
Somehow, after all these years, this perfume is still good. There wasn’t much left in the bottle, and it was rather thick and oily in consistency. Maybe somehow the alcohol evaporated and left behind all the oil in good condition?
Anyway, maybe some of the top notes have degraded, but it still smells rich and romantic. I’m very fortunate to have happened upon it.

Takes me right back to 1971–first year of college and a girl named Dottie on my dorm floor that sold Avon—I remember it originally in a midnight blue and silver bottle—I thought the name was desperately romantic and loved the jonquil, oakmoss aldehyde–just green, clean and floral enough for me.
I have good luck at my local thrift shop with Avon scents, especially the old ones in the funky bottles–I have had a tiny,.5 oz dab on bottle—but last week I picked up a pink figural bottle of an elegant Elizabethan Lady, filled with 4 oz of lovely, unturned Moonwind cologne! These older Avon scents are REALLY very well made!! Oh–and it cost 50 cents!!SCORE!

I always find vintage Avons at my local flea market …and for CHEAP. One of my favorite scores was a clear owl, glass clear body & plastic clear head..with big light blue “gem stones” for eyes that really sparkle in the light!
It’s filled with Moonwind powder that smells sooooooo nice and comforting! Because of the “Moon” theme and the light blue color of the owl’s eyes– this is a very BLUE color scent for me. Either way – the smell encompasses the “Aquarian” age and a special time in my life…the “Wonder Years”.
For the $3.00 that I paid for this, I got a good deal on a nice “memory smell” that I visit from time to time.

This is the first vintage Avon perfume that I bought that hasn’t arrived soured or “turned”. Not sure what year my bottle is from, but I have a small splash bottle. This fragrance came out in 1971, and it does smell authentic to that time period.
This came out a year after Chanel 19, and they have the oakmoss & a couple of other notes in common. If a mom who wore the Chanel had a preteen or teenaged daughter who she didn’t want wearing that because it was too grown up, she probably could have steered her towards this. It’s a little bit like the scent of Avon Lip Dew lip balm, with those added notes to give it some depth and young girl’s innocent Chanel 19 feel. I can see a 14 year old girl in the early 70s, who had flowered bed sheets, long, straight, ironed hair, who read Nancy Drew books, wearing this. Marcia Brady could have worn this. Such a pretty early 70s scent. So glad to have found a great deal on it on Ebay.

Classic green-aldehydic-mossy soft and gorgeous, this fragrance has been a favorite since childhood, though I’d forgotten about Moonwind for years before it came back to my remembrance not long ago. Mine is a vintage 70’s 2 ounce spray bottle, and there are numerous kitschy bottle designs.
I agree with every positive review that preceded mine; Moonwind is soft, beautiful, green and earthy while managing a beautiful diaphanous quality.
Scent: 9/10 absolutely gorgeous
Longevity: 6/10 but better if applied to textiles/ hair
Sillage: 7/10 – it’s difficult to over-spray this one, which is a good thing.
This heavenly, delicate fragrance is one of the softest, other-worldly compositions ever created by human beings. I plan to collect numerous containers and never be without this and recommend others to do likewise; when I love something, I never want to be without it, like marriage to the man I never, ever want to be without; Moonwind is Beauty in a bottle.

Moon Wind (Avon) 1971
Re-living the fragrance
Thank you to the sellers on eBay who are the online rummage sale for the whole world! This fragrance I wore in the early to mid 70’s which I ordered from the US to be delivered across the pond to the UK. In those days the Avon fragrances which sold to American housewives came in the most charming and unique bottle shaped like such things as telephones, dolls and female figurines, frogs, snails, peacocks, mirrors, churches, bells, and lots of interesting and cute creations. Sizes ranged from small (1 ounce) to larger (over 4 ounces). I used this up very fast every year. I had the ‘green’ themed bottles of frogs and green Christmas candles. Green is definitely it’s color.
As a green toilet water chypre scent, the oak moss is quite dominant. Smells of green carpet made of earth, grass, moss and vetiver. Opens with strong classic aldehydes so common in old Avon perfumes. The cologne is the right balance. Not overpowering but definitely strong. There’s a citrus note of bergamot orange and grapefruit swimming in those aldehydes. Fresh and citrusy with an astringent citrus aroma not unlike the opening to Emeraude by Coty. Then it turns to a floral note of deep lavender. The lavender note is aromatic and almost seems to be paired up with rosemary. The imagery it evokes is pastoral, not so much a garden, but the countryside, where fields of lavender and freshly cut lawns are to be found.
The fragrance does not last very long as it’s a toilet water but it is fresh and invigorating and great for wearing after one’s shower or bath. In fact it is a bath oil. I have the bath oil shaped like a bust of a Victorian woman. The scent does have a trail of flowers as it wears on your skin, but they are not terribly heady or super fragrant. Soapy flowers. They include soft floral tones of narcissus and jonquil, possibly a lily of the valley. The color is green and white, like lily bulbs on green bushes and stalks. The scent is earthy, floral, aromatic, herbaceous. When dry the fragrance turns slightly woody with cedar or sandalwood, a tiny amount of musk and some patchouli but mainly it is a dry down of moss. This was when the oak moss was authentic and had not yet been banned by the people at IFRA International Fragrance Association, who decreed that the oak moss note is toxic and hazardous to the public.
Moon Wind is… a swamp or a bayou in Louisiana, in the dark, illuminated by moonlight as it reflects over the still green waters. The scent is like having bottled up pretty nice swamp water and caught moonbeams in the bottle. This perfume is quiet, serene, soothing, herbal, therapeutic. Total therapy. It’s wearable in the day time as an easy to wear clean green scent. You can wear it practically anywhere including where you work. The scent is outdated and old fashioned but you will definitely stand out in a good way. Mature and clean, a fragrance that belongs to it’s era. This was the ‘green is good’ era of the 70’s when chypres and green florals were all the rage. This is wonderful.

Cool, mossy, blue green. A little contemplative, a little lonely, a little sad. But also euphoric, and nostalgic. Beautiful. There’s definitely musk in this one, and I’m not sure if it’s animal or nitro, but it’s a variety that isn’t used any more. It’s in the old avonade, and definitely present here. I have a small strawberry full of the pure perfume and a large blue plastic aresol(sp?)of the colonge mist, which I layer. These are chock full of natural ingredients I wager. That oakmoss is just heavenly. I recommend getting some of this while you still can on eBay. The prices are going up and stock is going down,it seems.
This is a magical perfume from a bygone time. They don’t make em like this too much anymore! I love it!

WOW I am amazed. Trying today a vintage mini perfume in a shoe bottle. This is NICE perfume. Reminds me of Youth Dew somewhat, but not so spicy. I really like this and most definately recommend it. Fresh and sexy at the same time.

J’adore.

This was Avon at its biggest and best as far as I am concerned. I have a large blue bottle with a silver flame on the cap. Its large and stately. Just don’t look too close as you can see through it. Make sure you find an original bottle as what came later in the silly collector bottles were all greatly reduced in strength. What is inside is my favorite of all time from Avon.
After the popularity of Charisma which roared carnation and rose, Avon produced Moonwind that whispered lavender, lily of the valley and Jonquil. That was after the HUGE green aldehyde roars open. This rocket fuel propels it to the moon. The heart is like moonlight on quiet lake. There is some rose, jasmine, iris surrounded by vetiver and oakmoss. It sits on some delicate amber and sandalwood. Overall, its a classic and refined composition.
I was only 7 when this was released and my mother alternated this with Charisma. She had all of the style of 1971-Mod earrings and festive polyester prints in blue, green and aqua. She was not a perfume snob with her collection that included Guerlain and Estee Lauder. She entertained with Avon. I will always remember her festive parties and Moonwind filling the room at night. It was affordable American style that defined a generation.
Today, about once a year, especially on a full moon, I give a spray and let my imagination soar. Moonwind is still amazing!

Opens with a strong aldehyde which carries with it fresh citrus. It is light hearted and slighty soapy. Once the aldehydes float away it becomes a greener scent but still with a soap tint. After thirty minutes, oakmoss and vetiver dominate creating a green woody feel.

my mother wore Moonwind back in the late 70’s and 80’s. It smelled wonderful on her. It was clean, fresh, yet soft and feminine. I used to spray it on myself because I liked it so much. Just seeing the name brings back wonderful memories of my mother as she has been gone now over 30 years. I have not seen any in years, but Avon did offer it as limited editions every once in a while. I understand the limited edition bottles are now very valuable. They should bring it back every once in while along with some of their other classics.
