Monogram by Ralph Lauren is by far THE BEST mens cologne ever made!

I so wanted to love this… After reading all of the glowing reviews here I simply had to try it so I researched ebay and was able to locate 2 travel size bottles from 2 different sellers for a very reasonable price…. I finally recieved both a few days apart and I’ve gotta say…. I’m a bit disappointed…. Now, I grew up in the 80s and love old school colognes but this was just way too much for me…. I felt like I was bombarded by a VERY smokey smell mixed with something else that I couldn’t put my finger on….First bottle smelled this way and I figured maybe I’d gotten a bad bottle, but then I received the second bottle from a different seller and it smelled exactly the same way…. it actually gave me a headache which no other fragrance has ever done to me…. On the bright side, I really dug the look of the bottles.

After receiving a bottle of Polo Crest in the mail yesterday and a pretty large sample of Monogram today, I can only come to one conclusion: The house of Ralph Lauren in the 80s – early 90s was simply hell bent on ridding itself of its best fragrances.
Monogram is like nothing else I’ve ever smelled before of any era…and I’ve sampled a LOT of scents of all varieties over the years. It brings to mind images of the 80/90s James Bond portrayed by Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan. Amazingly sophisticated stuff. Undoubtedly the most elegant scent Ralph Lauren has EVER produced (perhaps second only to Purple Label.) It definitely smells 80s, but could easily be worn today. It opens with a burst of lavender whose sharpness is offset by the sweet benzoin. Neither are overpowering, but balance each other perfectly. After about 10 minutes, the sandalwood and spices begin to peak through and add even more depth to an already impressive fragrance. What really puts this scent over the top is the drydown. The lavender slowly subsides while the benzoin is left to mingle with the oakmoss and musk in a heavenly olfactory cocktail. Sillage is great as this, with one spray, easy projects 1-2 feet away from the source. Longevity is also fantastic. One spray to the wrist has yet to fade to a skin scent after 3 hours. Scent….I give it a solid 10 and all of this after 30 years in a glass vial. This was discontinued? Why Ralph Lauren? I mean, really?
    Sillage: 9/10
    Longevity: 9/10
    Scent: 10/10

I have about a third of a large bottle of this amazing stuff stored away. In the mid 90s, my boyfriend at the time (who is now my fiance – we got back together years later, as if you care but when you get to the end of this you will understand why I am mentioning it) totally ganked this stuff from his stepdad. I think he was just trying to impress me by wearing it, not having any idea what it was. Needless to say, the stuff is incredible. Sure, the smell is quite nostalgic for me but on it’s own, it’s just amazing. Ralph Lauren NEEDS to bring this back. I will buy 10 bottles immediately. Every once and a while I’ll bring it out and smell it (without spraying – it’s too rare and precious to do such a thing lol). Anyway, since it carries such nostalgia for the both of us and being that we are first loves, he’s going to wear it on our wedding day. 🙂 Does anyone know of anything else that presently exists that smells similarly?

I tried this during my last year of high school…… I had a BFF who was loaded and lived in a house as big as our school.. We went nuts on his dad’s and older brother’s collection of fragrances one day when we were bored. This scent ALWAYS ALWAYS stood out for me. Sadly, I’ve NEVER been able to find it again.
***Does ANYONE know where I can find this frag??????
    ***UPDATE
Found a bottle: BNIB in an Estate Sale…… $285 for 50ml, but worth EVERY PENNY—— WOWZER!!!

I’ve been looking for this for so long, and finally found a small bottle. I haven’t been disappointed, though I am surprised at what I smell after reading the reviews (it was very different to me!). My skin reacts quite differently to fragrances as does my nose. Most fragrances seem “linear” for a some reason I cannot understand, as did this one.
Coming to the smell, for me it is a fresh (slightly soapy?) powdery musk, patchouli fragrance with a little bit of lavender and pine lurking somewhere below. Lasts 3-4 hours on me, with decent sillage. Has the “80s” vibe which I love in my perfumes, and doesn’t smell generic at all. Very tough to get a hold of nowadays, and definitely not worth the 100s of $ being charged on ebay, but a nice blast from the past if you can get your hands on it for a decent price. I like!

Bought it for my husband 20 yrs. ago loved it. Ralph Lauren please bring it back. It makes me want to go oh yeah, yes, yes, yes, and a few other things. I am very picky about men cologne but this one it was not loud and it stayed with you. the fragrance was unique quite mellow. I haven’t found anything close to that fragrance since.

I bought a small 1/4 oz bottle back in the late 80s. I wore it sparingly, as I had others that I wore more often. Then I put it away and forgot about it for more than a decade. 10 years ago I found it and wore it on holidays. It was my Christmas day cologne. EBay has supplied me with a few big bottles.I smell pine in this. Defiantly woody, but very classy and not at all aquatic. Strong and long lasting, this is a powerhouse.

Once upon a time-1985, I had a bottle of Monogram. This was back in the day when Ralph Lauren had clout and was more respected. After Polo and Chaps was everywhere at the time, this was a cleaner alternative. It never caught on, unfortunately. It was better than most things on the market at the time. That makes it lightyears ahead of anything today.
I loved the blue bottle(its fine ribs felt great in my hand) and its contents were exceptional. It was dry, sharp and very tidy with lots of notes playing off each other( I think the tree above is off). I remember it as more a “woody chypre” than anything. Indeed, there were florals and those fantastic chypre accords-vetiver, patcholi and oakmoss. The nose is not listed. A shame.
If it wasnt so pricey now, I would get another bottle. My original was around $15. Paradise lost, indeed!
Update 3/14/2015 I couldn’t resist a very vintage bottle for $100 USD. Am I a sucker? This does for blue what Polo (original) does for green. You can do the math…

This is musky, though not super musky. It’s certainly got some sweetness but it’s not overboard, and it’s a little syrupy. It’s rather blended, but I’d say there is an animalic/leather aspect, along with patchouli and oakmoss. Florals are also present, and they are heavy/damp, but again, difficult to detect as individual notes (I’d guess powdery iris/orris root, rose, and jasmine,). There seems to be some spice and a touch of herb. It has some elements of vintage Chaps, though this one is not as leathery, dusty, or animalic, and instead is more floral. There is no obvious lavender and it’s certainly no fougere. There is a vague note supplying a little “structure” to it, but I can’t identify it, probably light wood and/or vetiver. One thing noteworthy about this fragrance is that is possesses a kind of “cool” quality that prevents it from feeling too heavy and dense; I wish I knew what is was! This is as good as any niche, if this is what you’re seeking.
