I have always loved Marc Jacobs ‘the original’ esence. I own the Hydrating Body Mist (have since run out of the eau de parfum). This one lasts for quite a while on your skin, smells like a dream and always receives many compliments.

voluptous, heady, sexy, very feminine fragrance! I loved it!

This fragrance has a huge blast of something synthetic in the topnotes mixed with bergamot, I think it’s the massive benzoin. It never improves to my nose. This is a scrubber. The benzoin dominated the whole drydown, too, and the florals barely peeped through. Please do not even think about a blind buy on this one. Sample it first like I did. It was a surprise, and not a good one.

TALIERA, no it’s nothing like flowerbomb, at all! IT
it is a gorgeous fragrance and much more creamy than the original, the original to me is more modern more crips …light hearted.
essence more reminds me of what many refer to as “serious” or “old lady” gardenia, WHILE it’s more potent creamy gardenia it does have a whimsical side not all serious
ANYONE who is looking for something like the original but wants more floral and more creamy _ i do believe you shall love this one>
sillage is moderate and longeity is excellent

I normally wouldn’t wear this scent as it initially sprayed heavy and heady. The heavy douse of sampaguita scent, I learned to appreciate when I found that the EDP’s staying power was pretty long. I’d recommend it for office use although I’d advise you to spray it on before you leave the house and leave the bottle there. No need to spray on again as it will last you the entire day.

Marc Jacobs ESSENCE (edp), a close cousin to MARC JACOBS, opens with a burst of freesia that gives way shortly thereafter to abundant gardenias lightly embellished by iris and rose and nestled in a creamy base that cradles the florals for the rest of the day.
Something about ESSENCE is even more scrumptious than the original MJ. I believe that it is the musky balsam benzoin base supporting the multicolored florals, in this case.

I am writing about this again because I feel my first review didn’t do it justice. As I am wearing it more during the spring I am remembering more of how it develops on the skin.
The original MJ is very green and has a semi-bitter/tart edge to it. Very modern and edgy in itself. Essence has a more floral side to it, there is a lighter air to it having a more whimsical creamy edge to it. I find it softer, but it resembles the original. It might be a waste to have 2 scents that are similar, but I think people can tell the mood I am in by which one I wear. When I am in a good mood the light gardenia, iris, and orange blossom are so prodominate making me feel fresh and happy. When I am feeling a little edgier I wear the original where I feel modern and sharp, kind of a I mean business scent. They are both similar but speak completely differently to me.

This is light and floral. It blends down to a prominent gardenia scent but its not overpowering. I tend to not like perfumes that are too floral, I don’t want to be a walking garden. This is perfect to be best described it is the essence of the original marc jacobs lighter.
bodibuildi5 – :
The smell of “Essence” is like “Marc Jacobs”. It is a light and acceptable perfume, but not creamy, not candy-like sweet! The differences between Essence and Marc Jacobs are people’s feeling of perfume and the descriptions of both smell.
Marc Jacobs is like a elegant young lady who works in office. Essence is like a graceful graduate student in University. Marc Jacobs is more matured than Essence, though both of these are young style perfumes.
The gardenia and jasmine note in Marc Jacobs is stronger than that in Essence. From the experiences of my friends, people who don’t like the white floral note, they might not accept Marc Jacobs. But they may accept Essence.
Although Essence is light, it doesn’t fit for using in summer.

Was wondering if anyone has anything more to say about this perfume…? I am seriously considering buying this because I like Marc Jacobs “Marc Jacobs” but want something more creamy, not so light and more like real gardenia scent. I am a huge fan of gardenia, but have failed to find a good gardenia fragrance. Is it anything like Flowerbomb, by the way?
krava-men123 – :
I have this lotion and it is wonderful. The scent is a lot like the original Marc Jacobs, but much more creamy. If you love the smell of gardenia, you will definitely love this fragrance.
anatoly-dvornikov – :
The benzoin in the first phase of this scent is like a nostril opener. It grabs your attention to the gardenia and it stays that way thru most of it’s application. The dry-down is what I don’t like in that you can smell the alcohol and that sort of takes away from the composition of what might be an elegant gardenia perfume. Chanel, Trish Mcevoy, Apothia, Jo Malone, and Susanne Lang all do a better gardenia, so look into those if you have a lemming for an interesting white floral.
