Description

Maine belongs to the Stories Collection by MCMC. It was inspired by a day spent on the island of North Haven at the Maine coast. Sun, sea, air and pines are perfectly campured with notes of Bulgarian rose, clary sage, Somalia myrrh, French seaweed, dried grass and musk.

It is available as 50 ml EDP and as 10 ml of organic oil. Maine was launched in 2009. The nose behind this fragrance is Anne McClain.

EDIT: I love it! It’s strange to read my own old review since this is the perfume I reach for more. What changed? Not the perfume MAINE or my skin. What changes is that now I live by sea and this perfume is perfect. Really perfect. I think Maine is one of those perfumes that is true to its inspiration and flows perfectly on a similar place as Maine. When I first bought it it was because I was nostalgic of living on the coast but this perfume didn’t worked for me on a urban environment! I truly advice it if you live in the open space in the country or by the coast. It’s heaven. It’s not just rose and grass it’s a subtle yet full of character scent that turns one with the space around while maintaining its integrity. So yes, I’m truly in love with this scent now and can’t wait to try the others. Oh, and I’ve been asked a lot what is this wonderful smell? People usually around me don’t quickly understand I’m wearing a perfume they think that there is something magical in the air, really :)! I’m keeping my old review below because it’s quite funny, I’ve never changed my mind about a perfume like this.
Oh how I wanted to love MAINE. I’ve read so many reviews and the description seemed so appealing to me: sea, bulgarian rose, the grass. I like green fragrances and rose. But it only smells like Bulgarian Rose essential oil to me for a long time in the end it’s just grass, dirty grass, not wet grass but actually grass that is decomposing. Actually that’s the only part I can feel the ocean in the perfume, since here where I live, there is this ocean smell from the algae when are decomposing that is very similar. No one likes that smell, it’s too strong even in an open space as the beach. I really couldn’t smell like this. It gives me nauseas. Too bad :/ I’m thinking so many strongy happy reviews can’t be wrong and maybe it’s just a chemistry problem between my skin and the perfume because to me it really smells terrible and this wouldn’t be called a perfume at all and I’m really open to medicinal and strange/unconventional fragrances!

I am totally impressed by MCMC’s fragrances. This fragrance is complex and although I wouldn’t purchase the full bottle, as it is just not me, it is amazing. It is a Maine beachy scent. You feel like the sea air is hitting you right in the face (in a good way!). It is so authentic, it makes me want to try all of their scents!

After going through a slightly sour start, I felt as if I had stumbled into a beautiful rose garden in full bloom on a dewy morning. Both the scent and image conjured were lovely. The stroll in the rose garden lasted for an hour. Gradually, the dew fades. The grass dries.

Sadly I did not enjoy this at all. The rose seemed to clash with the sage and grass on my skin. The real reason this doesn’t work for me is because this perfume wears you, you don’t wear it. It clangs like cymbals all in my face.

Go to the ocean in Miane. Try very hard to forget the stereotypes of pine trees and lobster and just close your eyes as you walk winding sandy path to the beach. On either side of you there are beach roses growing higher than your head and you are enveloped in them. Without warning you emerge from the thicket onto the warm dunes. No smell of fish… No pine trees or lobsters. I tip my hat to MCMC for capturing a true, uncliched experience of the Maine beach.

After a brief burst of rose in the opening of MCMC MAINE, dried grass takes over the perfume. It smells nice and natural, but more like a fine cologne than a composed perfume, it seems to me.
I was trying to guess the notes and all that I could really discern was the initial, ephemeral rose, followed by a citrus-tinged dried grass. According to the hierarchy at another site, the dried grass is actually hay, but this does not smell to me at all like the hay of Jean Patou 1000. It lacks that dampness and slight bitterness which I’ve come to recognize as tell-tale signs of the scent of hay.
To my nose, this smells like citrus and dried grass, not hay. But hey, that’s a nice scent, too! This composition reminds me a bit of my vague memory of d’Orsay ETIQUETTE BLEUE (of which I also had a skimpy sample…). Unfortunately, my small sample of MAINE is now exhausted, so that’s about all I can say.
I probably will not be pursuing this fragrance further, although there’s certainly nothing wrong with it. It’s just that I do not find it especially compelling or original. Completely unisex, MAINE could be worn by just about anyone just about anywhere at any time.

There is something weird going on, I though when I first sniffed my wrist without looking at the notes. At the opening there is this sour, green smell that I haven’t felt before in any other fragrance. Weird, but wearable. Fresh, unique and natural.
This perfume is actually very amazing, the grass smells so naturally wet and alive that I can’t even explain how real it feels to me.
If you love green fragrances, try this. It’s weird at the opening as it’s a bit sour, but the grass + rose combo is just lovable.

A stroll by the coastal sea on one side and a pine tree forest across the road on the other is an accurate discription of what this frag transfores one to.
This is definitely unisex (disregard that it says for women up top). The rose, seaweed and grass set the table with the musk finishing up the affiar.
A most excellent outdoorsish scent. Rugged yet sensual. Best for a casual day/ night wear/ affair.
