Description

Swedish cosmetics company Oriflame has teamed up with the fashion designer Marcel Marongiu and launched M by Marcel fragrance. Marcel Marongiu, born in Paris, studied fashion in Stockholm. He launched his line of clothing in 1991, classically elegant, sexy and modern at the same time, made from fine and luxurious fabrics. Marcel is now the art director of Guy Laroche fashion house.

Inspired by the world of high fashion, Marcel dedicated this perfume to brave, confident and feminine ladies. The exceptional composition includes absinthe, elegant Turkish rose and suede as the main ingredients. The top of absinthe, rose and incense is followed by the heart of Turkish rose, date and iris, while the base features patchouli, suede and amber.

Marcel also designed the square perfume bottle decorated with a stopper in form of a stylized letter “M”. The fragrance is available as 50 ml Eau de Parfum.

M by Marcel Marongiu was launched in 2011. The nose behind this fragrance is Alexandra Carlin.

I usually wear niche fragrances but when I discover By Marcel, although it is a cheap perfume, it has become my signature. Only that Oriflame decided not to produce it anymore and I never understood why because it was such a beatiful parfume, niche like quality. Yesterday, after years of searching and smelling thousands of perfumes, I finally found the perfume that smells the same, even better (on mys skin, i don t know about others).
I m talking about Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire Bois d’Iris, a niche perfume, a lot more expensive it s true, but finally I have find that odor after I i have craved for so many years.

Found this one by chance. Very lovely perfume, and it’s also quite potent. The opening was quite sharp, caused by the absinth/incense. I could only smell a bit of rose, I suspect it gave the opening a bit of sweetness. The mid became very sweet on my skin, but the combination of incense/dates was a great one. The basenotes appeared rather quickly: suede became the main note you could smell along with the patchouli, mingled with incense and dates. Sharp, austere but warm. Quite lovely, and also quite butch/unisex. Sold it off because it reminded me too much of Bentley Intense which I also had at the time (which is a real compliment!).

To LIZZARD : It is a Swedish company – I think you will find their perfumes in all nordic countries – but probabely also in central Europe.
This one is discontinued from what I know.
I like it a loot so it is a pitty.

How does one get their hands on this line?? I have never seen Oriflame in any store I’ve shopped in any country I’ve visited. They sound amazing!!!

katia31, I’m with you! I still have 45 ml of M and 60 ml of Mirage, but what the heck am I going to do when I run out??? 🙁 Oriflame doesn’t know how to make business, I guess…sad!

  7. :

Why do they discontinue these amazing fragrances? Can you, dear Oriflame, put this one and Mirage back in production?! Be sure, many people would be happy and you would make quite a good profit. So think about it,please.o.k.

The first thought i have is “incense”. The smell is naturally good. It’s not strong at all. I’ve been looking for this incense smell and finally attached to this. Just like others opinion, it’s rather masculine and i don’t think it’s spicy.
God, i’m so confident using this for my activity. I mean, spraying this before i get to work and hang out? It’s perfect!
    Love the bottle too lol.
Guys, what are you waiting for?
If you’re interested in what i’ve been too, then what should you do now?
Marcel Marongiu is waiting for you!! ^^

Dusty-smoky, exotic fragrance, spiced dry incense, nicely sour suede and with really beautiful patch. I received it in a multiply swap and was very surprised by the quality and beauty of this fragrance, a keeper, lasts and well blended.
Will be liked by those, who appreciate incense in John Galliano.

Oooh…First of all – it’s a HEAVY type for sure!
When I smelled it for the first time I hated it(sorry, but it’s true).
Anyway, after I sprayed it on my skin it smelled differently and I kinda started liking it couple of minutes later. It’s definitely long lasting.
It smells strong, minty, fresh and absolutely UNIQUE.
It radiates some sort of strong vintage scent.
I’d recommend it to 40+ confident ladies who have unique taste and like strong fragrances.

  13. :

Reminds me Perles de Lalique as well… also a little bit Dior Midnight Poison, but not as much rose and not as sweet. M by Marcel is really more about patchouli.
    Nice though!

This was a successful blind buy for me, even though I don’t consider it a safe one.
I agree with boutlagh’s review, the bottle and ad look way too modern for this smoky-leathery scent. I guess it’s already a huge risk for a company like Oriflame to produce anything non-crowdpleaser, but I’m happy they took it.
The first words to describe it would be herbal and vintage-y, but without the common vintage notes like aldehydes and civet that many people dislike, so it’s actually pretty easy on the nose, unless you hate wormwood or patchouli.
It’s not sexy in the common meaning. It doesn’t smell “good”, it smells interesting and it gives you character. This is why I love it.
I wouldn’t call it exactly masculine as some of you did, but it’s dominating. It’s for a strong woman who can hold up on her own and doesn’t have the desperate need to be liked by everyone. She’s liked by the people who deserve to like her.

This is 2nd Oriflame fragrance which I liked (out of 20-something samples), but unlike Amber Elixir Night which was an instant love, M left me undecided for some time.
Yes, it bears some resemblance to Yves Rocher Cocoon – I think it must be that initial blast of grassy “bitey” patchouli. But M is more complex. It reminds me of industrial style: unapologetic, functional, “raw” design with sharp lines of wood and cuts of (synthetic) suede. Kind of ugly/pretty. As we can see, these are present as notes, bitter and not very sweet, not made to be comforting or comfortable. (Cocoon is exactly the opposite: cozy and familiar.) M contains many “darker” notes: patchouli, wood, suede, incense and amber. Rose is listed but I can’t smell it. Iris? I’m not so sure but maybe as a root.
Overall M is mesmerizing and demanding. As if asking, are you smart enough to appreciate me? (What a cheek!) Must be tested before buying.

It was headake from first smell. One of the most unpleasant scents I ever had.

  17. :

this perfume has character. It’s a sort of strong heavy oldfashioned perfume. when I smell this I get the image of a dusty oriental bazar full of deep brown, over decorated old tapestry and dirty gold cooper trails.but that’s not bad at all, because this adds a lot to it’s charm and exentricity.
ps/if Iwas the bottle designer, Iwould have chosen something more vintagy.Gorgeous bottle though.

it smell like amethyst fatale by Oriflame . Love this perfume because i can’t find Amethyst Fatale in my country

It could be unisex scent. It is very powerful, almost masculine…a lot of incence and amber.Don`t buy without a try, first.

i remember my coworker trying this fragance and ask my opinion.
i said i dont like this coz the smells just like an old lady. shes 30, but i think this fragnce would be suitable and the way as a lady, if this use with an age by 40.
so very lady, with all wealth and glamour,,.

This is a great fragrance. I don’t think it’s similar to Yver Rocher’s Neonatura Cocoon at all! It’s very masculine, kinda reminds me of Avon’s Herve Leger Homme

  22. :

I am wearing it today, there´s a lot of snow outside and I am in a warm room concentrated for work. I have to say that this is very close to my idea I had about this scent when I smelled it for the 1st time – a little bit rought, masculine but a enough warm and floral to give a pleasant and relaxing feeling.

  23. :

    3 out of 5

Unfortunate blind buy. I ordered it based on the many positive reviews from the official website, but ended up terribly disappointed.
I found it too masculine (and I do adore masculine scents but not vanilla-based ones like this one), too strong, nausea-inducing. Also, it has a medicine-like odor that lowers its olfactive value and…too bad for the blend of spices and leather because I adore each of them on their own.
But not in this nose-breaking formula! 🙁

  24. :

Oriflame M is the one I choose to wear whenever I want to appear sophisticated. Day, night.. Although I would say that this perfume fits better for evening wear, a light spray during the day will not hurt anyone.
The aroma is strong and convincing, gives you the feeling of being super confident and independent. It is like a great filter if you want to push some weak, cheesy boys away, yet attract the bigger, stronger men.
Warm, sophisticated, completely noticeable, and absolutely a head-turner fragrance 🙂

I have two news to all Neoantura Cocoon lovers!
Primo: The above mentioned has a dupe in a form of an irregular, beuatiful bottle called Marcel!
Secundo: Marcel has a monster staying power and a great silage, so will make a great substitute to a discontinued Cocoon.
Since the two fragrances are nearly identical, I will not be elaborating on Marcel much; I will simply say it is warm, enveloping, slightly sweet fragrance with an earthy patchouli that balances the sweetness well.
And it does seem to draw attention and generate compliments wherever I go.
Marcel is a top quality fragrance that has at least 6-7 hours staying power, so there is no need to reapply whilst out on a big party night.
The richness of the fragrance and the fact that it is neither over-popular nor similar to any other fragrances on the market makes Marcel my favourite and I am seriously contemplating making it my signature fragrance.
And by the way – in contrast to what other reviewers say, I don’t find it even remotely masculine.

  26. :

This is a an extremely woody fragrance that’s why it calls to mind masculine fragrances. Actually, I do find it more masculine than feminine…
It doesn’t develop much on the skin, it’s absolutely linear from first spray till it fades down.
    Top longevity and sillage!

  27. :

so woody and warm, good lasting power, my mom loves it very much

  28. :

    4 out of 5

I like combination of suede and rose with a nicely composed note of wormwood and insence. Longevity is great, 12 hours on my skin. But I don’t like the base, it somehow smells masculine and a bit dirty on my skin. But I highly recommend this for testing. It is not a typical Oriflame scent. It could easily be unisex.

Ez az illat nagyon hasonlít az Avon Surrender for Her-jére.

  30. :

This is a very unisex type of perfume. Best for self-confident, expressive women above 25. It gives you an “I am strong, I am competent” vibe.
I smell mainly RESIN, the type you encounter with when you wax your legs. They say the main note of this perfume, rock rose has this kind of leathery, resinous smell. Nowadays the main ingredient in amber is the resin of the rock rose (called labdanum), so you can get what I am talking about. The upcoming scent of wormwood around twenty minutes gives a minty, medicament-like tone combined with the smoky incense which is quite detectable from the start. The head-heart notes are embedded in a very creamy base, dates and patchouli for sure, making it warm and cozy in the long run. I didn’t really detect any distinctive flowers such as the rose or iris but it surely has some kind.
Great lasting power, especially on clothes. It can last even more than a week. I find it quite complex and unique, but those who fall for sweet scents won’t be pleased with this one. I think it represents the feeling of autumn, for winter I would imagine something more oriental and spicy e.g. like Mirage. A superb purchase for the price you can fetch Oriflame scents.

Amazing lasting power! At list on my skin I could feel it more then 10 hours. So it’s a great perfume for work days, if you don’t want to spray it again during day.
Fragrance is very interesting, warm, elegant and chic! Mostly I can feel wormwood in it.

  33. :

This smells like a glamorous night in a bottle. The leather of rose are quite dominant here (though the rose is slightly weaker than leather). It’s a cool scent, but since I’m a college student I find this too mature for me. Maybe I’ll wear this kind of fragrance for work.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

I think it is a very sophisticated fragrance but can’t feel anithing else just rose and leather. Pretty masculine. I like to use it when the weather is windy in autumn and winter. I think this scent is belongs to wind. 🙂

  35. :

    3 out of 5

I like the powdery warmth of the amber-patchouli-suede-incense combo sweetened by the dates and rounded out with rose….but the wormwood gives this a sour note that I dislike. If it were not for the sour wormwood…I would really enjoy this scent!

I have tested this some days ago and I really though it was a men perfume, then I was surprised to see that it was a women one. I still think that it smell just like you are wearing your boyfriend´s perfume. I really don´t like or understand the composition of this scent, as I said it will suit perfectly to a man.

  37. :

the bottle looks great but sadly, all i got from it is intense black pepper all the way from the top notes till the dry-down; i guess it doesn’t work with my chemistry for the time being, i’m giving it a fifth try or smn, i won’t give up on it till i’m sure it really smells bad (at least on my skin)
Update: i finally managed to like it, i think it has something to do with the cold weather, now i wear this perfume happily

oooooohmph!!!! here we are ! i recieved it today morning and guess what? i m wearing it proudly right now… stunning bottle, square shapped and heavy with a golden top, nice done, don t have to take off any cap, the spray is integrated in it. just spray and enjoy it!
i m starting to share with you my journey with marcel by oriflame now:
initial spray: purest blast of tigerbalm! someone did mention this and yes, indeed, i confirm 100%!
it’s soft and not causing teardrops in your eyes as tigerbalm can do sometimes. i like this initial spa-blast.
who don t like tigerbalm though, should not even think about putting fingers on this one…
after this initial sensation of about some minutes, it seddles down to a slightly minty-medical aroma floating inbetween a incredible warmth coming up from your skin to your nose… yam! what’s this ? it’s sooo delicious! nag champa incense sticks and rose married perfectly with sweet dates and and powdery iris… oh my godness ! i can tell, i never smellt something comparable before and it doesn t remind me to rykiel woman that much as i was expecting by the notes… ok, for the dates, rose and a distinct warmth is does, yes, but that’s it. this perfume has a completaly other caracter than rykiel woman, but not less good. it’s lovely and strange, not something for girly-floral lovers or sweet-gourmand lovers. it’s kinda classy-elegant and sophisticated, yet very very modern.
at this state it reminds me rather to my highly praised lalique le parfum for the medical aspect and the incredibly warmth and smoothness. this is the only perfume i know, i could compare a little bit to Marcel by oriflame for its wearing sensation.
well, do i like it? as far yes!
hmmm. there is now a lot of absyinth detectable after 30 min. wearing it… the warmth has gone down to just a tad and the medical character is now dominant. in the background some hints of an italian leather designer store (suede), powdery-dusty patchouli and a creamy amber-trail are showing up nicely. hmhmhm… intriguing!
40 min. after applying the base comes through really earthy, warm and elegant, still with a hint of medical absynth aroma, the suede leather note comes through now very intense and tempting, for those who like this aroma of expensive leather stores… mmmmhmmm yam! feels expensive and exclusive, the leathery earthy-powdery base reminds me of kelly caleche by hermes right now.
i mean, if you like the smell of buttersoft leather, smooth amber and a hint of dusty patchouli-absynth, u gonna love it!
whit this one u will be shurely noticed in a inoffensive and positive way. it is an excentric perfume for shure, but not a screaming one, rather soft and tender with something that intrigues people to come closer and take a whiff, and somehow it smells also familiar and cosy.
it has a great, but not overpowering sillage.
maybe it’s not sexy for everyone, but shurely not disturbing for anyone neither.
otherwise for some people it could be a real on tuner as well. such a nicely blendet and intriguing scent, i guess, i m in love with it! to me it smells very sexy!
staying power seems to be very very good…. i didn t lost any intensity after 50 min. now… hope it will last some hours!
1h after applying: i get constantly caressing, now again very warm powdery ambery whiffs, when moving around, the very much appreciated hint of medical cooling absynth inbetween, still recordnizable. simply loooveeely!
maybe this will not be a mega big succsess for oriflame, simply because it is really extraordinary, not common in any way and not a mainstream scent for shure. innovativ and avantguardish.
i would chose it rather for daywear than for nights out, because of the only reason, i do reach for sweeter and heavier stuff, when i go out at night.
for winter this can easely become my signature for a while, guess it will not boring me quickly like others do. i think it could be also comforting to wear it in warmer spring days, in summer, when it’s really hot, i m not shure what this would do on your skin….
i just ordered a 2. bottle cheaply on ebay, from someone who apparently didn t liked it, just in case they will discontinue it too quickly, what would be a real shame. :*)))))
after more than 1,5h the perfume is still changing and fooling around with my nose; lovely trails of everything i described… at the moment, sweet whafts of dates and rose are regrowing on my skin and alluring my senses! this stuff is incredible! wow! madly in love now! <3<3<3
    ad. note:
    – is it unisex?
at my oppinion not really! maybe an androgyn type of man, who loves to play with his female part inside, could wear it proudly with smokey eyes and black clothes. 😉
    – is it dark and mysterious: yes
    – is it sexy: yes!
    – is it warm or cool? both!

  42. :

    Top notes: absinthe, rose, incense
    Heart: Turkish rose, date, iris
    Base: patchouli, amber, suede
    Artemisia absinthium = wormwood
guess the wormwood is what some people are mentioning as pepperminty – cool – masculin vibe. indeed wormwood features in a lot af male fragrances, more than in female scents. but this could be very interesting blendet with sweet and warm notes. it features also sweet dates, rose and amber, as in Sonia Rykiel woman perfume. i m really curious to this perfume and ordered a bottle on internet. can t wait to test it!
over all, the notes are similar to the mentioned, my all time fave perfume, SONIA RYKIEL woman-not for men.
i ve high hopes to find in this one a similar but slightly different scent (without the peppery note of Rykiel but extended with wormwood instead), to variate soemtimes. can t wait!
review will follow as soon i get it in my hands.

Let’s face it – this perfume smells fantastic!
It’s made in the style of Midnight Poison by Dior & So Elixir by Yves Rocher – I mean very strong on beautiful sweet rose and powerful, earthy patchouli and incense!!
I smelled it from a sample and I was truly spellbound.
I even dare saying it’s similar to Epic by Amouage … Spicy, earthy rose.
I believe this is what reviewers refer to when they say it’s masculine: patchouli and incense accord.
    Very sexy, a definite head-turner.
    But!
M by Marcel has a very serious drawback which makes me furious – terrible staying power. Typical Oriflame creation. After twenty minutes rose, patchouli and incense are gone.
You are left with soft, sweet, creamy amber & suede.
    Lovely, but not fair!

  51. :

M is a masculine female fragrance. I can clearly smell the suede note. As Sensoria mentioned, this fragrance gives me a very familiar feeling, maybe a male fragrance from the past i don’t know. If you like masculine perfumes you should try this.

  52. :

    3 out of 5

I only could test it in de brochure from the paper. But first thing I noticed is the familiar smell of something else. Think Yves Rocher had something like this with his Nature Millenaire, which is I think discontinued, and his Neonatura Cocoon. It smells rather masculine and dark. Gorgious bottle, love it!
Hope I can try it soon out of the bottle because from a paper brochure is not the best way to test a perfume.
