Description

L’Homme Libre is a new variation on the subject of the original perfume L’Homme by Yves Saint Laurent from 2006. L’Homme Libre launches in September 2011.

The fragrance contains a mix of bergamot, pink pepper and patchouli. The face of the perfume is ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied.

“You can wear it every day, all day. I like it because it’s fresh and youthful, but masculine at the same time”, said Millepied about the fragrance for Allure. L’Homme Libre was created by Olivier Polge and Carlos Benaim.

    pickles? Seriously?
Not sure if trolling or just stupid…

Me and my wife laughed as we smelled the sample because the first notes are pickled cucumbers. Who wants to smell like pickles?
It could be that basil and pink pepper make that type of smell, but either way — no wonder why this fragrance is so discounted.

The fresh, spicyness helped clear my nasal passages. This gives me hospital vibes though

I hate that this has been discontinued. I love this, I have used it for a lot of dinner dates, and the girls definetly complement me if they get closer to you. That being said, its not a club scent.
Its best when you want to have a cozy night date, Girls do want to sit next to you, just to smell you.
I am saving this for a long time.

On my trip to dubai, Sephora had a lot of them in stock. Snatched one more for my collection. Its hard to find in the US, not elsewhere.

Just bought this from a souvenir shop in the falls, either it’s gone bad? Or it’s heavy violet leaf very Dior Fahrenheit like, at least in opening. Too much violet leaf for my liking. If it ain’t bad now, it will be one day as I don’t think I will ever wear it again.

I Agee that this is underrated
Has very large shoes to fill
La nuit will always be the sweetheart and cause it actually is!
This is well done but comes of almost mechanical/ metallic/ozonic.
Clean cut scent but not very warming/ comforting.
It’s all about he violet in this one.
    Great office scent.
Performance average 6-8 hours with ok silage.
    Well made!

So so underrated. Out of all L’Homme and La Nuit flankers, this one rocks the most and it is only one that is super smooth and lasts a long long time. And out of all the flankers, this one gets discontinued? It’s like YSL is deliberately shooting themselves in the foot. Watered down L’Homme, totally ruined La Nuit and discontinued Libre. Honestly, YSL won’t see me again.
This smell is compliments, compliments, compliments in a bottle. Spring and summer, day or evening, this shines and pushes this not overly sweet, not overly aquatic vibe which lingers in the air. I can’t stand violet leaf in most frags but this one in combination with other notes is the most pleasant violet leaf ever. It starts of so watery, semi sweet, refreshing and it transitions into a more smooth sweeter woody base. Every note in this frag is done perfectly.
Such a shame it is getting more and more rare.

Stylish and classy, fresh as well just a youthful scent. Even though it’s really versatile here’s a simple tip use it on summer nights / cold weather, that will the time when L’Homme Libre literally shines

I guess it really depends on the skin but this fragrance smells amazing on my skin. After I put it on in the morning it lasts until the evening and is probably the only fragrance I have that I get compliments for almost every day for. It is fresh and yet spicy, suitable for any season and part of the day. I get nausea from sweet fragrances, thus I highly recommend it to people who cannot stand the sweet-smelling colognes- it successfully combines violet and pepper which tones down the sweetness.

Smells fresh and aromatic. Not citrus fresh but herbal and green. Really nicely composed. It is quite a ‘quiet’ scent but guess it may shine in hotter weather. It puts me in the same mind as Dunhill Fresh but is still quite different. Even though they share many of the same notes, DF is more Nettles and faint gasoline. I definitely prefer the YSL.

Yes it’s musculine, let it to dry down in a 30 minutes and a sophisticated Tonka bean will project with a light

The dry down makes me nauseous. I tried it on several occasions and in different seasons but something in the dry down smells like a sick animal urine (metaphorically).
Something about this perfume makes me hate it…finally gave it to a friend who loved it.

Love love love Libre! This was my 12th or so bottle and I was enamored on the first encounter after receiving a sample along with my La Nuit purchase from Macy’s in 2012.
I wore the sample for a couple days at work and kept thinking, “I need to buy a bottle ASAP” after almost obsessively taking the vial out of my pocket and putting my nose to the cap every couple hours. My boss asked what I had on with almost a panicked demeanor. When I told her what it was and that it was only a sample she practically ordered me to go out and buy a bottle… if you say so haha. That was all the excuse I needed, especially considering she was a beautiful, very trendy/classy woman, the type many men would like to attract. She had good taste all around, so I trusted her enthusiasm for the scent.
The rest is history. I’m on bottle number 4, the first 2 were 3.3 oz and the last 2 have been 6.7 oz purchases.
I note this in almost all of my reviews; the purpose being to provide context and establish credibility. I own nearly 140 bottles in my collection, most of which I’ll never go through a full bottle of and it’s not because they’re not great, some I just gravitate toward more frequently. I have most of the classics, the crowd pleasers, deep ones, light ones, flankers, and hype beasts. This one though, for whatever reason, is in my personal top 10.
    It’s versatile, it’s sexy, and it’s unique.
    Scent: 9:10
Longevity: 8/10 on me, lasts a full work day.
Projection/silllage: 7/10 It projects well, definitely not a skin scent yet still nowhere near being cloying
Versatility: 8/10 It’s both classy and casual. I’d wear it to work, a social gathering, a day around the house, and a warmer night date. Works well in all seasons though I prefer it in the spring and summer months. It’ll still cut through the autumn and winter cold. Very refreshing.
Value for money: 7/10 This can be found on discounters for around $55 on any given day for a 3.3 oz- totally worth it IMO.
Overall: 8/10 I’m in the camp that refers to this as an UNDERRATED GEM.
    Cheers!!

This is my favorite of the L’Homme line from YSL even with it’s mediocre at best longevity. I personally prefer this duration as I use my refillable atom often. My ranking of the line goes: 1. Libre 2. Parfum Intense 3. Sport.
To keep this review short and sweet and only add what (strangely imho) hasn’t been said, this flanker smells like Gucci Pour Homme 2 with the addition of a nice amount of vetiver. It’s not as smooth or quite as sweet as GPH2, possibly due to the vetiver (and of course the numerous other constituents), but at the end of the day, this is how the blends turned out, pretty dang similar.
Before I made this comment, to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, I sprayed each on opposing wrists and asked others, and most thought they were the same.

  23. :

    5 out of 5

I only want to confirm @muotarek comment. YSL Libre can be good at hot weather or in the summer but overall it’s very weak. Like sweetened water in body-mist concentration…
You have to really overspray it to last few hours with absolutely no sillage…
    Longevity: 4/10
    Smell composition: 5/10
Silage: It’s barelly a skin scent

Love it!!!! This scent actually got me into the frag community, one sniff and I was hooked!!!!
This is definitely a very very durable fragrance, cool day or warm night from the office to the gym to the evening hangout you’ll surely get compliments and turn a few noses. Can’t say enough about this ysl masterpiece!!!!! It’s in my top 3 without a doubt

I gave myself few months before reviewing this product, because i found YSL fragrances to be kind of sophisticated, or maybe i’m not used to fragrances that are that good.
this is a very strange one. the ad didn’t really inspire me to buy it and some youtube reviewers say that this is an underrated one, while others think this smells like a casual gym scent.
this smells like frozen violet we can all agree on that. But where can you wear this scent? work setting? gym scent?
to me this smells like seduction. I know there are so many fragrances out there that women love and find attractive, but this scent is very seductive in a very subtle way. this is the scent i imagine Alfie or Hank Moody wearing while seducing women.

This is louder than its older brother the original L’homme. Libre is spicy, green, (little bit) harsh and dirty..and i agree this has Fahrenheit vibe ( i didn’t say they’re similar). Maybe Libre is the most versatile in L’homme line you can wear it anytime, any season, indoor and outdoor..I can smell ginger (L’homme DNA) in the drydown, but the pyramid doesn’t say it has one. It’s not fresh sport frags but more casual, i’ve never been a fans of the original, but Libre gets big “Like” from me..7/10

  28. :

Really love this frag. Projects really good at summer day and last the whole office hours, but still weaker than Dior Sauvage.
Because it lasts too long, YSL discontinued it and replace it with cologne flanker which is weaker. Weaker means more sprays also means more money for YSL.

  29. :

    3 out of 5

My favourite from YSL. Beautiful scent -fresh, spicy and long lasting. Because it it long lasting YSL decided to discotinue it. It wouldn’t be fair to their other releases such as La Nuit, L’Homme, L’Homme Sport etc. which last 1-2 hours and have zero projection after 30 min.

*** Update after receiving a bottle I am happy to report that the performance is pretty good for what you pay. They should keep this in production.
I compared a sample of LIBRE to a sample of YSL Ultime and though I haven’t had the chance to compare for longevity and sillage, I think this one is far better. I find it to be somewhat similar to Cartier Declaration but a little sweeter. It is a fragrance that smells much different when you let it find your nose, rather than sniffing your arm to analyze the scent. It is a nice scent but starts off in a very intense way. The dry down is very very nice. Im on the fence but I will definitely pick up a bottle if I see it at the right price.
The cedar in Ultime I find to be rather extreme and well, I live in the land of cedar trees so I don’t think of the scent as being very special (Older folks around here will sometimes have a cedar lined closet to keep the moths away – that’s all I can think of when I smell this much cedar) If you are a fan of cedar then you may prefer the ULTIME, I think they did a great job with the note but it does not suit my taste…
I do enjoy the slight hint of bitter rose in ULTIME but I really have to hunt for it because again the cedar is overbearing. With a dab of the LIBRE on one hand and the ULTIME on the other I find that all the notes from both are overpowered by the Cedar – Its much better than just plain cedar, but too much cedar for yours truly. I can’t believe the ULTIME has a stronger rating than the LIBRE but I would have to guess that some are sniffing the LIBRE up close and then turning it down which is what I started to do.
LIBRE WINS FOR ME, out of these two anyhow. I have been considering a bottle of Declaration and I think of this as being similar but more versatile and so I think I may end up going this route if YSL can outperform. I will have to compare the two and then decide which one I will get.

I think this is one of the more underrated of the YSL L’homme lineup. Starts off with a clean, ozonic violet and dries down to a smooth peppery wood. Not the greatest performance, but I think it would work excellently as a casual or work fragrance.

  32. :

    5 out of 5

Scent is subjective…and to me, the top notes are reminiscent of a body spray old spice makes (or used to make). I believe the scent was “Pure Sport” or something along those lines. Had a teal colored label….
The dry down is much more masculine and aromatic with Libre, however. Not a “must have” for my taste, but I will certainly finish the sample I was given. A fresh, green scent enveloped in the ubiquitous YSL sweet notes.
You can really smell the star anus

fresh, subtle, spicy, its absolutely versatile. just like what it advertised that this fragnance suitable for almost every occassion and condition, but what im little bit disappointed that this fragnance has no develop at all, it almost straight from the opening to the ends. its true that this fragnance has a great performance thats a plus but i pretty choose another that have a better smell rather than no development at all.what im picturing to this fragnance is so blue, just like the thin fresh airy of blue cloud.

This scent has a Fahrenheit type of vibe to it, not that it smells like it, but it has a similar vibe. this fragrance is VERY underrated, smells great, has great longevity and sillage. it has a nice, calm, spicy, fresh, sexy and elegant scent that stands out with character and sophistication…
    LONGEVITY: 8+ Hours
SILLAGE: Within 6 feet for the first hours, then becomes within arms length.

YSL’s L Homme Libre is a fresh scent, and part of the infamous L’Homme flanker collection. I had L Homme way back when it first came out and I really liked it. I purchased this one when reading the notes and hearing some of the hype behind it after its’ release. Upon first spraying, this feels like a real flanker and echoes a bit of the original, but eventual breaks off into a spicy, floral scent. I used to really like this fragrance, I wore it a lot to work and especially during the day, but after a while it felt too sweet and a bit cloying. I really believe this scent is perfectly suited for the guy in his mid to late twenties, who is on the go whether in his work or lifestyle. YSL LHL should be worn under a denim jacket, just before you pick up your messenger bag and head out the door, 8 months after you finished college and are back in the workaday world.

  36. :

    4 out of 5

I loved this fragrance when I first purchased it, however it’s sweetness has been getting a bit annoying lately. Maybe I have used it too much. I do get compliments on it though and I am a fan of the L’homme line by YSL, this one is no exception.
Best for daytime use, I find it is not strong enough for a night out. I’ve tried it for evening use once in a while and it’s okay in a pinch. I can wear this all day and it is there enough to be noticeable, but not overpowering. Perfect if this is what you look for in a daytime fragrance.

Got plenty compliments wearing this regularly, but it had a cloyingly sweet note that gave me a headache. I don’t bathe in the stuff either, a spray on each wrist and on the chest was enough. Very long lasting, and moderate silage. Probably perfect for the workplace. If business casual was a smell, it’d be this. Was sad to see it go.

I don’t own a bottle of this one, but I did get a bunch of carded ebay sample. I really enjoy this one. It has that L’homme sexiness, but they added a star anise note that makes it a bit mature and classy as well. I love wearing this one, probably more than the original L’homme since I think this one is a bit more unique.

    Review from Malaysia
Got a 90% used bottle at a decent price based on reviews here. It’s a clean fresh kinda scent and smells good. It doesn’t really evolve much on me and the 30°c-35°c humidity and stays rather linear. To be honest, I get that violet leaf note right from the beginning and it pretty much dominates everything else throughout. I find it rather elegant, subtle and classy if worn in a formal setting but it can also be a good fresh gym and sporty alternative to the usual “Sport” stuff. While I always would recommend trying before buying, you won’t offend anyone with this, and it does a pretty good job in the performance dept. Ultimately however, It isn’t really my kind of thing, and after about 6 months and 35% of use I swapped it for a 50ml bottle of Invictus. I can’t make comparisons with the other L’Homme series coz I don’t own none but L’Homme Libre definitely is worth trying
Projection – 6/10 becomes a skin scent after about 2 hours then lingers
Longevity – 6/10 about 7 hrs in total
Silage – 6/10 will not suffocate nor announce your arrival in advance
    Overall – 6.5/10

I love smelling something coming from someone else and thinking, I have to get that. Which is exactly what happened with this gem. I was riding with my co-worker and kept getting this out of the shower smell that was spicy fresh and sweet and just had to have it. Asked him what it was and thankfully he was able to describe the bottle enough for me to figure out which ysl he was talking about. He’s one of those guys who’s like “oh I don’t know my wife bought it for me”, and I’m thinking like damn my wife doesn’t buy me shit. Anyway I went to Macy’s the same day and picked it up! Awesome freshy, very underrated, and a great compliment getter!

wow, what a flanker. superb longevity. sprayed it yesterday at 7 pm and could still smell whiffs on my neck in the morning.another flanker or not talk really undermines the quality of this smell. will definitely be my signature scent from now on, even above bleu de chanel. a hidden or underrated gem for sure.spicy fresh opening with aquatic ozonic base that cuddles with your skin. i buy perfumes as food for soul and not for compliments and this perfectly fits my bill.
PS. YSL ahould have come up with a new name for this gem

I bought this by mistake today thinking it was the frozen gingebre? something like that..That I enjoyed. I just can’t get into this. If you want to know what this smells like, immediately a younger version of drakkar comes to mind. I’m very surprised no one has mentioned that. Performance is good but just too damn fresh Spicey

    3 out of 5

Benaim and Polge are some of the biggest guns in popular perfumery, and it is encouraging to see that even the ground zero of mainstream fragrances; that is, the mens “aromatic”, can still be reinterpreted in a unique and high-quality way.
The trick here, then, is not only to avoid the standard “fresh-gere” fare: aqueous notes, citrus, resinous woods, and bitter “greens” like pine and cypress; but to build a bold, distinct fragrance using a sharp and full bodied note to give character.
In this case the perfumers didnt have to reach very far. It is the unmistakeable hit of violet leaf that first springs out of this fragrance; at once green, wet, floral, almost vegetal in a way (fruity, cucumber-like notes are frequently mentioned). For one reason or another, Violet Leaf is not a dominant force in mens perfumery. Perhaps it is too floral or too strong/rich, but it is one of the few notes that is unmistakeable, even in lower quantities. Today’s reigning king of violet leaf is (of course) Dior Fahrenheit, but even 13 years prior the note was heavily featured in Grey Flannel (but GF mixes violet leaf and violet flower, different from the violet “kick” we are accustomed to today). Scan the Grey Flannel reviews and you will see that it is more often compared to the younger Dior, instead of the other way around.
For fun, open tabs for prominent violet leaf fragrances in the database, and then search for the keyword “fahrenheit” in the reviews to see just how powerful and rock-solid this association is. Even in fragrances with ostensibly unrelated pyramids, even a moderate use of the note will immediately have people drawing comparisons to Fahrenheit (perhaps this is a factor of ignorance, but the impulse must be acknowledged).
So how similar to Fahrenheit is L’Homme Libre? Truthfully; not by much. The “petrol leather” duality is entirely missing here, and it is a big component in Fahrenheit. There are no real spices or woods or florals to speak of; the violet is front and center here. A much closer comparison would be Aqua Fahrenheit, which has strong notes of mint and basil (also present in L’Homme Libre) on a bed of patchouli (as in the YSL). A comparison to Narciso for him would be a bigger stretch.
For what it is and what it does, L’Homme Libre is excellent. The violet has free reign of the structure; at the opening there are powerful grassy, chlorophyllic elements, fruity, juicy, watery cucumber and vegetable-like notes, and the subtle sweetness of unique floral signatures (no sugars here). Mint and basil add even more wetness and body. Citrus adds moisture only, but does not otherwise make itself known. I could not place star anise and nutmeg by name.
The middle becomes more rounded, and this is where the fruit and cucumber notes really start to come out. They are fleeting and partial; you cant name them because they arent actually there, it is the Violet Leaf throwing shadows and playing tricks. Here the basil starts to overtake the mint.
The base settles into a green patchouli, without the heavier earth and chocolate notes that come up when the note is amped up.
Relatively linear, this is a great starter fragrance or everyday wear, or even a signature. In terms of its competition, it is very unique. Short of comparisons against other violet leaf powerhouses, you can’t really do an apples-to-apples with other entries in this category. It is easy to wear, excels in all seasons, and projects and performs very well (4 sprays lasted 9-10 hours for me). It is sophisticated, classy, and youthful. For some people the fruitier aspects may be too “immature”, but there is little that could be said negatively about this fragrance.

Libre is unique summer and spring fragrance. It smells like violet in the ice and it creates a really nice minty coolness. It has a very nice greenish vibe and definitely different from entire ysl l’homme collection. It also has a very good longevity for fresh fragrance.

I just love this scent. its unique, sexy, fresh in its own way like nothing else.
compliments everytime I wear it and people ask me what is this scent and I don’t tell them what it is. actually I say a friend gave me this in a small decant and I dont know the name of the fragrance. I love this in a bad way so I dont want anyone in my world know it or use it (JUST ME).
The most amazing thing about this scent that those stupid fragrance reviewers do not talk about it so it remains special and unique (Please no one mention this scent to the german guy Mr.Jeremy)lol.

A fresh, safe cologne with a uniqueness of its own. In the collection of about a dozen colognes that I own, this one emptied the fastest. It’s just a great scent that you can wear anywhere. I only wish the sillage was improved. It lasts, surprisingly, a long while
Strangely though, it started to smell a bit like brine to my nose (maybe the iris or an accord with anise) but settled and widened into a lovely, fresh scent, reminiscent of a breezy afternoon at a St. Tropez yacht club. If lapis lazuli had a scent, this would be it.
Edit: two years later, I’m halfway through my second bottle of this. My collection is up to about two dozen frags, but still, find myself drawn to this one for summer days. Still, a beautiful scent though I’m currently leaning to woody, vetiver scents and incense-laden potions. Shame that they’ve discontinued this.

  51. :

Beautiful violet smell that retains the original L’Homme DNA yet goes off in its own direction. Very nice and warm off the top, and I think it’d be well suited for all seasons. I’ve been wearing this in the summer and high heat really works well for this scent.
The patchouli is also very prominent too, as mentioned in a review above mine now a comparison to Narciso Rodriguez does come to mind.
/EDIT – 22 February 2017, I’ve had a big turn-around on this – I now find it pretty average (I sold mine, in fact). A few months after owning this I found the top notes to a kind of synthetic strange combination, and my love for this started to diminish quickly the more I wore it. The dry-down didn’t really do much to interest me neither. The longevity & projection are average but I think my preferred type of scent has drastically changed and this just doesn’t suit the bill for me any more.

Hey, spcmiller. Yes, there’s a change in the formulation also. A leather note has been added, that’s all.

Gets better with each wearing. Libre is a masculine scent that works in all seasons and occasions. Funny that Libre receives little attention in the community but gets plenty of compliments on the streets lol. I wear fragrances mostly for myself anyway, regardless of what other collectors think. Wear it if you like it!

I am wondering if anyone has noticed the change in the packaging? The original version has a clear, entirely transparent cap. The recent revised version has a silvery plastic opaque cap. Is this change a product of cost efficiency or if there has been a change in the EDT’s formulation to coincide with this packaging change?
I do know that Libre is getting harder and harder to find in department stores being as Nordstrom, for example, used to carry it in all their stores but now is only carried in a handful of brick and mortar stores (it is still available for order online). Perhaps, when they start slowly discontinuing the L’Homme line this will be one of the first to go.

This is the only other flanker I have after the regular L’homme and at first I thought it was just ok, but I now really like it and I get plenty of compliments when I wear it. Long lasting as well.

The opening is a bit sour(to my nose),but when it dries down i starts to get a sporty vibe.Very nice and simple fragrance for spring and summer days 😀

To my opinion this cologne is the most under rated one from the YSL L’HOMME line, it deserves a lot more respect.

I love this fragrance so much!!! I would wear it because i definitly am the masculine scent kind of gal and this especially has a well roundedness to it that makes it unisex…that being said, i bought this for my husband and beg him to wear it because this scent on a man is so sexy and by sexy i mean i want to get on him. If you are looking for a lady killer scent, look no further. This is more of a date night, club kind of scent, you could wear it to work but i think there are less distracting options out there than this one which just screams “i got sonething for you”.

I really like this fragrance, is very fresh and modern too. I detect in its output immediately violet leaves and anise, then the elements that give the spicy touch with nutmeg and pepper, although violet leaves are held in almost all development appear, reminding me a little a phase of Acqua Farenheit Dior. Finally, I found a smell like soap classic fragrances maybe given by the combination of leather, vetiver and patchouli. For me it is one of the best fragrances has done Yves Saint Laurent in recent years but still not at the level of previous classics. I recommend it for people over 30 years of daily use. While it is not a scent that innovates has a smell that do not consider it generic, has very good longevity at least in my skin 8 to 9 hrs and nothing intrusive.

Violet leaf with a pinch of pink pepper and basil, served on a little vetiver plate. What a bloody great composition!?!
Adorable fresh modern perfume for “city cruisers”.
The performance is five hours moderate sillage for reasonable price.
    Recommended edt product.

This has some of my favorite notes (violet leaf, pink pepper, vetiver) so naturally I really enjoy it. I have La Nuit also and yes it is outstanding but the two are completely different and meant to be. I happen to love them both. Different fragrances for different occasions. I currently only have YSL Libre as a decant but I will be buying a full bottle soon. I can see myself wearing this casually in many situations. As you can see in the reviews though it is a bit polarizing. I would suggest you do what I did. Get a decant and judge for yourself before blind buying a larger quantity.

I had this when it first came out. It basically smells like basil leaves and axe body spray. Not too awesome or unique. It’s also pretty sweet for s men’s fragrance. Definitely not my favorite. Lasts a while though.

This is a young strong sophisticated refined gentleman in a bottle. It has just the right amount of woods, spices and freshness, but that high quality energetic violet note really sets it apart. I get great projection and longevity, though it’s never too strong.
I get so many compliments from the ladies with this one. Just yesterday I put it on, and 2 women asked me what I was wearing. My girlfriend in particular asks me to wear this all the time. It never fails to get her in the mood. Even though any man can wear it all season round, my girlfriend often steals my bottle to wear it for herself.

I just got this on a blind buy, read some reviews and I just plane like YSL L’Homme line of products. It is definetly different, very woody is what i get. I actually don’t mind it for a casual wear. Longevity and silage is moderate. I don’t smell any sweetness to it as others have described.

It’s so fresh and woody and masculine. It was given to me as a gift and, I absolutely just fell in love with it.

Urban sexy. Big city, jeans, tshirt, wool trench coat. Yep. Peppery but ozonic. Understated spicy vibe. Compliment getter. My new sig scent.

honestly, you get bored of it really fast.
smells pretty synthetic and artificially sweet, like it was made with aspartame or Splenda.
good in a pinch if you need it at the gym but there ware far better ‘workout/sport’ frags on the market. <br
