“Behold! King Stefan’s Castle and on yonder top most tower dreaming of her true love, the princess Aurora. But see the gracious whim of Fate. Why tis the self same peasant maid our prince had met but yesterday. She is indeed most wondrous fair. Gold of sunshine in her hair, lips that shame the reddest rose. In ageless sleep she find repose.”
La Belle Au Bois Dormant or Sleeping Beauty is actually the 2nd “pretty princess” fragrance from this line which mostly specializes in Gothic scents of dragon’s blood and witches’ hemlock poisons. Their first big hit was Snow White. The others are strongly masculine animalic and dirty smelling nothing like you’d imagine perfume to smell like. But this one is a breath of fresh air. This fragrance evokes Charles Perrault’s classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. It’s one of those fragrances without a base so it’s mostly top and heart notes that come at you at once. I detected a dominant red rose scent but it’s layered with magnolia and pear. It reminded me somewhat of Rose de France by Historiae perfumes. The frangipani note is also very noticeable. There is also woods and just the faintest touch of musk. Lovely. It really does match up with a children’s book of fairy tales with an illustration of Sleeping Beauty sleeping on a bed surrounded by woods vines and climbing tendrils of ivy. This is a beautiful floral fragrance for princesses but with enough lasting power to remind you that this is for adults and not one of those cheap children’s Disney Princess perfumes. Divine.
