I bought a bottle of KIORI outside NYC a few months ago, before the fragrantica review came out. I’ve been following the brand for a while because a friend of mine knows the perfumer.
I personally think KIORI is heavenly, incredibly sensual and I literally get a ton of compliments when I wear it. I seriously mean a ton! I get the whole patchouli overload thing but the trick is to apply a tiny amount. Just a dab or two suffices for the day. Upon application it is sweet, rich and luscious but it really matures and becomes quite captivating a few hours later. I don’t detect floral notes in there so I’m curious about that but there is a lightness that weaves throughout and emerges randomly during the day. I personally think it’s a winner!

I was also dying to try this based on the natural oils, the longevity of scent, and the promise of a spicy patchouli note. It comes in a little roller ball which makes application easy. The scent first comes off as a very sweet patchouli…the vanilla adds the nice gentle sweetness. I didn’t pick up any florals at the start or at any point . As time passes, the spice really kicks in. Almost too spicy for me, but it tempers the earthiness of the patchouli and has a nice pleasant roundness to it. It seems to last forever and I only rolled a bit on my wrist and throat. . On a side note, my 16 year old son told me to step away from him because I stunk…my husband hates it too. I like patchouli, but normally buried deep within a fragrance. This is definitely a patch bomb, but in a good way!

I was super excited to receive this perfume today. I went ahead and splurged for the 1/4 ounce (vs trial size). The initial review indicated it had incense notes and that is right up my alley. I was also impressed this is an all natural perfume oil. So many perfumes on the market smell artifical and filled with chemicals. The fragrance is presented in a cute little draw string bag. And by little, I mean LITTLE. The 1/4 ounce is about the size of a mini nail polish bottle I would buy for my daughters. Although, this is an oil, so I guess that is to be expected. Also, I am really not a big fan of roller balls as a delivery method for fragrances. But again, as this is a perfume oil…that’s probably to be expected too.
Ok, so now on to the scent….I’m really not noticing any incense notes which sort of disappoints me…..I do notice a very sweet note (vanilla) and something earthy/mossy…..probably patchouli. After 20 minutes or so the sweetness lightens a bit….thankfully…and more of the spicy notes seem to surface. I love spicy but this, on me at least, comes across as a more masculine spicy scent. It sort of reminds me of a cologne my dad used to wear in the late 70s. If I can separate the dad image out of it, maybe I will give this scent to my husband. Although, just to be safe, maybe a friend is a better choice! 🙂
Just a final note, this is a very creamy and well made scent….just not what I was looking for.
