Description

After last year’s fragrant pair Amouage Fate, 2014 will certainly be marked by new editions Amouage Journey Man and Amouage Journey Woman, available in gold color flacons combined with crimson front part (face of the bottle), whose central part features Amouage logo and brand name.

We always expect a lot from the house of Amouage and the new Journey fragrances take us for an olfactive journey to the Orient by a mixture of precious ingredients. Women’s fragrance Journey Woman has been announced as a floral-fruity with accentuated leather notes while the version for men, Journey Man, is masculine and woody-spicy also accentuated with leather subtones.

The new men’s fragrance AMOUAGE Journey Man confirms its woody-spicy character with initial notes of Sichuan pepper and cardamom, refreshed with bergamot zest and luminous, sparkling neroli blossom. The heart incorporates juniper berries, incense, pure geraniol and tobacco leaves lying on a base of tonka, cypriol, leather and musk. The fragrance is also available as 50 and 100ml Eau de Parfum.

Wow ! Just when I was getting really nervous about yet another blind buy and disappointment this came in… incense has never been a note I really care for and in most case can even stand. My first experience with Amouage was Interlude (haha imagine that) and then Lyric which my skin turned into a very dusty old lady version of rose unfortunately. BUT being a lover of most fragrances which involve leather and or tobacco all the reviews of this finally convinced me to try another Amouage.
I briefly had HdP Marquis de Sade and not saying that they are exactly the same by any means but very similar to my nose. MdS is also a sweet/incensey leather base where on that one instead of the bergamot it had somewhat excessive amount of immortelle so it made it kind of cloying and sticky sweet, which I just couldn’t get past. Journey though for me is a FARRRR better blended fragrance and seriously surprised me. One of the reviewers below mentioned a strange sour note they got sometimes that they couldn’t get past, I could be wrong and it is REALLY strange to me, but I can see a vague similarity with the interplay between the bergamot/neroli/juniper/peppers to resemble the kind of pungent aftertaste of a vitamin c tablet that’s dissolved on your tongue. Haha… I say it’s really strange though because even with that correlation that has turned me off of several fragrances in the past, in this I somehow really like it ? I’m guessing it’s because there is enough depth behind that smell that kind of lead that smell to deep tobacco and leather that make it smell amazing as a whole.
Mind you, I literally just received it today and so far I have only had it on for 3 hours and it is 80+ degrees outside here in San Diego. I can only imagine when it cools off tonight and I apply after a shower I’m sure I will get a lot more out of it even, but so far I am incredibly pleased and for once all the reviews were pretty spot on and almost unanimously positive… Reminds me why I love Fragrantica so much and why I have introduced so many people to it !
Thanks for reading and Happy Sniffing !

The jet set Amouage. Journey evokes images of a handsome, young, and wealthy world traveler. It is bold and daring, perhaps even slightly aggressive. At the same time grounded and sure- nothing odd or strange.
Pepper, citrus and cardamom give me a slight effervescent opening. The kind derived from spice. Though there is no nose tinge or burn as from heavy pepper or say mint. The ample spice is silky and smooth. Easy on the sense of smell. To me the bergamot, neroli, and juniper create what feels like an herbal accord that i draw a youthful vibe from.
Tobacco , leather, tonka and incense are savory and deep. Theres a smokey, and for lack of a better word- delicious aspect to the base. The Amouage signature is here throughout. And while muscular, doesn’t come across as overpowering. This is a velvet smooth, bold dark niche tobacco that fragrances such as ch men prive and dark rebel imitate.

    Amouage journey man
What a wonderful journey through olfactory delights.
It opens with beautiful citrus cardamom notes and evolves over next few hrs taking you through incense and smoky roads to your final destination where you settle down amongst delightful musky leathery tonka bean note.
Waoo.. What a pleasure to wear it and enjoy the variable notes all day long.
An absolute must have for all the true complex fragrance lovers.

When they moved production of Journey from Oman to UK, they made some small changes.
On one hand, they made it a little bit lighter and fresher than it was before while keeping every note and accord in place – that’s a great thing if you ask me. But on the other hand, they reduced its longevity and overall performance – and that’s a bad thing if you ask anyone. Comparing an old sample and the juice from my new full bottle on both arms, I see those two differences clearly.
Well, let’s call it a reformulation done very well, although I’ll miss the uber-performance of the original.

This is a grown-up, masculine scent. Spicy pepper with a hint of tobacco. Seems to project and last forever.
I can see why people find it similar to V by Clive Christian, though Journey is a tad sweeter.

My Weather conditions : Summer/ humid of Pakistan,
I wear it from my bottle in my office at 9am and its resinous is still with me at 7pm, it is truly a beast in longevity, now projection is also in beast mode,at 5pm when i left my office for home that single spray which i wore at 9am was still in my room and believe me door wasn’t closed during this period..
So in my opinion no one should have any problem with longevity and Projection, coming to the notes it was first time i wore it and i can feel pepper, musk, tonka beans,a bit of sweet tobacco,resins..
But its not every body’ s treat one can love it and the other can have headache, don’t blind buy please, anyhow i love tvis score is 8/10

Journey opens with a beautiful and resinous vetiver note that is not listed. Yes, it is similar to Epic from the same house in a lot of facets. Is this the briefing for Sauvage? Just wondering…

  8. :

    4 out of 5

I will compare this one to Epic from the same house.
This one is more sour due to citrus and juniper notes used, and it’s less sweet. There’s less incense too in comparison to Epic. Tobacco note is amazing and it’s different to other honeyed tobacco like those in Volutes by Diptyque or Herod by PDM.
Excellent power and has a lot of character.
    Signature scent worthy.

This fragrance smells really good like no others , a nice and nose friendly mixed scent of tobacco and spices , but the performance is average …worth a try!

Definitely smell a heady pepper. I get tobacco and some incense. There’s something a little fresh that must be the juniper berries. This freshness burns off in the dry down. No realistic leather but it has that sort of woody, amber, leather, Amouage thing going on. Smells much more modern than the Amouages I have tried. It must be the pepper but I get a metallic chemical tinge that I don’t care for. There are some similarities to Tom Ford’s Noir Anthracite. I can understand why JM reminds people of it.
Journey Man is masculine, a cool or cold weather scent and I think most ages could wear it. Lasted about four hours tops with average performance. Fine for the office. Some people might find it sexy but I don’t really like this one. It reminds me of too many designer scents out there. The metallic aspect is piercing and almost headache inducing. Should perform a little better for the price. There are definitely worse scents out there but JM is a hard pass from me.

Smells like a modern spicy seductive aromatic, but does not have the rubber or dark vibe.It has a leather richness, and resinous fullnous that designers cannot afford.Think Brown leather
This fragrance in bold in the use of leather and more of a szechuan pepper than black pepper.
I enjoy that this is a date night fragrance that performs very well and does not have the rubbersih feel of ferragamo f black or ch prive.
I suggest you sample before buying and do not find this old or dated at all and I am 25.
25 plus and I love this bold beast

Opening is resiny ashy and a little honey ! I don’t really get the cardamom or Neroli in it! Absolutely has oud vibes and some memories than Versace Oud noir! A winter fragrance and so special! Absolutely wrong for blind buy! Summary: Dark, resiny, ashy, oudy and spicy.
Such a great projection! Just one puff and all over smells this scent

Journey Man is a spicy masculine aromatic. The opening presents you with a tabasco-y sichuan pepper amongst a dry oudy incense. At this point, I suppose every time I seen an incense note in an Amourage I’m going to take it as an oud one. Into the drydown the fragrance sweetens up a bit as some notable resins (such as myrrh) seem to take a stronger presence amongst the lead of sichuan pepper and smoky oud incense.
I got to say, that Journey Man really comes off as the most cliche Arabic masculine aromatic imaginable. This is basically what every man smells like after a trip to the Mosque. I mean‒it would be considered a really common-place aroma.
I think there might also be an analingus joke suggested here as well. In the way it starts out heated and musky, kinda scary, but then turns out to be not so bad; a little sweet even. Further suggesting possibly that the gift of kings is humor? Humor is supposed to be on the house though‒I’d just like to say.
As for Journey Man, I honestly think that it could make a great fragrance for someone such as an Arabic person astrayed from their homeland. They would call it nostalgic no doubt; but even they would be likely to consider this very classic. And on that note, way overpriced for what it presents.

Woooooo-weeee… Strap on your boots soldier, this one is for the man’s man. It legitimately cleared my sinuses in an amazing way I never thought would be possible. What a delight. This is the first Amouage I have ever tested and I am not disappointed in the quality others have come to expect from the house.
It opens with an immediate, strong pepper, cardamom and tobacco. A literal one, two, three punch. Immediately, I knew, I transformed into the stogie smoking Monopoly man whilst my five o’clock shadow magically grew into a beard of ZZ Top proportions. All joking aside, the first phase is uber masculine and not for your casual Code wearer looking for something fresh. This is manly. I would say the bergamot and neroli tame the manliness but ultimately fail miserably. The second phase, a super churchy incense mixed with leather and a subtle sweetness. For the rest, a mix of all with a woody tone to it. Super high class, top notch men’s scent.
I definitely don’t see anyone under thirty rocking this one but go ahead and give it a whirl. If you’ve got the dosh and you want to be taken seriously, look no further. The fairer sex seems to enjoy it and it should definitely give you a commandeering man kind of vibe. I do not see this being wearable for a female (sorry ladies). The longevity is aces and the sillage seems to fill a room for the first 2 hours or so. I would say noticeable for a good 6 hours and lingers on your skin for much longer. Formal, formal, formal… But, I would like to wear this casually as well. It’s hard to pinpoint a situational use with this one but I could probably say with a certainty that a hot/humid summer is not your target season. Definitely winter, fall and maybe spring. Hot damn this stuff is good and I may just spring for the full bottle once my decant is finished.

An exceptionally uncommon Oriental leather from Amouage, this shape shifting beauty begins with a blast of citrus and tobacco, then begins to settle down revealing a peppery base of spices (notably cardamom) and in its complete dry down reveals incense, tonka, cypriol, leather and musk. Quite a journey from start to finish with surprisingly moderate-side sillage, projection and longevity by Amouage standards. Easily unisex, although leaning slightly on the masculine side. Beautifully blended as expected from this very reputed house, this is a very memorable journey indeed!

very nice fragrance. The tobacco is prevalent right from the opening and settles down after 25 minutes. Once this dries down it has a moderate projection for 2 hours then is a skin scent only. All in all its good and i would wear it again. Autumn and winter time would suit this best. 7 out of 10.

Start this journey with patience. It takes some time to reach your destination. That is the case with this perfume. Relax after spraying, go for a stoll, have a good black coffee.
And suddenly you arrive in a distant place. Warm, spicy, an oriental bazar, then as you continue your walk, wood, dry, like it has been dried in the scorching sun. Softening, like the touch of oriental fabrics, silk in the baskets on the passing camels.
Spray before you go to sleep, and continue your journey all night long.

That strange feeling when you put frag on your wrist and you are not sure for first 15 min if you like it or not. Then it gets better, softer, rounder, better, better … and after 2 hours you love it … because it’s Hommage by Lalique …
    No joke :/

    —————————————
At the first and in the top notes, Pepper is detectable. in my opinion Journey in 10 minute after spraying, is a little similar to Versace man.
In middle notes, perfumes become bitter. If I want to give a point from 1 to 10 for bitterness severity, I give 7 point…
I like base note vs heart note, because tonka bean and Nagarmotha is added in base note and tonka bean neutralize bitterness. Though Nagarmotha is in background, but it has an important role for changing general structure of perfume. Incense become more potent in base note too…
And finally, Silage is too huge…

As a native Sichuan-er, I have to admit, the “Sichuan” peppers is not so…..impressive after all. Just surprised they even bothered to put it into perfume.

Sampled this from the official sample pack when it first came out. It took me a year to make up my mind and buy a bottle. In that year I daily sniffed my almost empty sample. When I got home with the full bottle I did not get the same feeling as I got from the sample. I’m not saying they were different. Maybe it was buyers remorse, maybe they were different. The fragrance is unfortunately not getting the use I was hoping for. All though the opening is really lovely, it is too short lived and the base is very strong and long lasting, which would be a good thing if it wasn’t so sour. It get’s on my nerves after a while. Too bad. Another reviewer mentioned that it smells like a pack of cigarettes. I would agree, and the thought of that sort of takes some of the quality away from this fragrance.
In my experience there is a general lack of focus on the bases used in fragrances today. It should be the most important part of a fragrance.
I’m not disliking Journey Man, but it could have been done better.

Hello! Keep in mind that there are many places around the world that offer this brand of perfume but I strongly recommend that if you really want the original to buy only from the official representations of Amouage. Many people are disappointed with the perfume Amouage, because they buy replicas of the original, but not the original itself. The original itself has a price, and it is really high

Sampled this one for awhile. Love it. This is on my purchase list. Can’t wait. As a prelude to a review: this is Sichuan pepper. Not “pepper”… like what… cracked black pepper? Habanero pepper? Jalepeno? These are all distinct smells and flavors. The beauty of this is the Asian silk road to middle east range of flavors. Mongolian and Western Chinese cuisine has a different kind of pepper and spice aesthetic which this pays homage to in deliberate and delicious artistry.
As a fan of all kinds of peppers and hot pepper sauces from around the world this has the immistakable smooth smoky slow building heat of Sichuan peppers and it is blended into incense and tobacco to perfection.
It was between this and Interlude. And this one won because I can get by on samples of Interlude because it’s so powerful. This is less powerful. More palatable and culinary. But just as nearly as rich and amazing as Interlude. so… I’m going for this next.
I’ll gather notes from wider use to report back in full. But a love for sure…

Tried this one today, i really hoped to like it. The opening was fresh, i was excited. But after 2-3 minutes, it really smells bad on my skin. I swear i can smell cumin. It’s really a turn off for me. It became smelly like an overspiced indian dish. I like cumin on my dish, but not to brag it around.
It might be interesting for europeans & americans. But as I am an Asian, i just smell like coming out from my mother’s kitchen. After 3 hours, the drydown is somewhat nice. It’s fresh, airy, yet soft. It’s like being in the middle of a pepperfield.
I think I’ll pass this one. Can’t stand the 3 hour just for a nice drydown.

  31. :

Opening: spicy, dry, rough, quite harsh for an untrained nose
    Dry-Down: warm, smoky, balsamic
Feeling: takes you on an authentic olfactory journey through Arabia, one of the most oriental/arabic scents that I’ve tried.

I’m conflicted with this one. As other have mentioned before, the opening is rather off putting and harsh to me but…I LOVE the dry-down. Very masculine and smoky after the first hour. I’m trying to find something that tops Jubilation XV from this house but no luck so far.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

I’m not really a fan of the opening (too much going on for my nose), but after half an hour or so it becomes a warm, creamy incense and musk scent on my skin, and that’s what made me buy a full bottle.
The scent reminds me of the perfume an old lady that was sitting in front of me at my grandmother’s funeral was wearing. Of course it wasn’t the right time to ask her what she was wearing, so I’m glad I found this perfume by chance.
It’s very potent & you can smell the nice incense & musk on clothes for days.

This fume remind me of sooo many perfumes, which is a great thing because imo that means that Journey has a great progression, versus the linear trend of late. Journey reminds me at first of cardamom and what I thought was leather, but looking at the notes there is no leather… it’s kind of bitter and skanky… perhaps the tobacco? This single note reminded me of Krizia moods, but the similarities stop right there,
Once you get to the middle it reminds me of a really high end Carolina Herrera for man… minus the sandalwood, but it is a beautiful, tobacco and juniper combo, spicy and aromatic. And then… wham! It reminds me of Balenciaga PH with the incense and the sweetness, in this case coming from what I assume is the tonka.
It is a beautiful fume that feels and smells expensive. It is great that you can still find options like this, even if at the ridiculous prices of Amouage.
    Smell great my friends.

  36. :

I can see why this is a such a popular house and Amouage doesn’t disappoint with this juice. Journey man is my third experience with the Amouage house and it is stunning. Not usually a fan of scents such as this but, with such praise, I figured I would give it a go. It does start spicy and familiar (similar to something my father wore but can’t place the scent). Once the spicy aspect dies down I get a nice smooth vetiver wave that lasts and lasts (from the cypriol most likely). The sweetness of the scent can be coming from different sources… Tobacco Leaf? Ambrox? Tonka Bean? Could be all of them… This is a blind buy for me and I did get a good deal so I can’t complain. This is long lasting and projection is above average IMO. Fall and winter fragrance for sure. I will say try before you buy due to the price. If the cost isn’t an issue for you then go for it. Enjoy!

    “The Hidden Amouage Gem”
There have been much discussions about Amouage Journey. Some say it is overrated because it doesn’t stack up against Interlude or other beasts from Amouage.
I belong to the category of people who genuinely think that Journey is underrated and overlooked by fragrance lovers.
No fragrance can stand up against Interlude. Interlude is in its own league, but Journey is a hidden gem of Amouage fragrances.
It is masculine, but not over the top or in your face. It is done to perfection.
It is fresh, aromatic but also spicy, sweet and smoky. I can’t distinguish what contributes to the sweetness but it is controlled, natural and not cloying.
Tobacco makes it even more charismatic, and it is there from start to finish. Frankincense will be there during the dry down.
Amouage Epic and Journey are somewhat in the same genre and in the middle of the spectrum.
If Reflection is the smoothest fragrance Amouage offers and Interlude is the darkest, Journey sits right in the middle the of the spectrum.
The way Epic and Journey differ is Epic leans toward eastern perfumery while Journey leans toward western perfumery.
It smells really modern and like a well made European fragrance. It is the perfect fragrance for office settings, meetings, and work in general.
You will get noticed, and heads will be turned. It doesn’t have the WOW factor of Interlude or the sensual side of Lyric, but gets attention in a very polite and professional manner.
A 10/10 fragrance from my all time favorite house. I can’t praise Amouage enough.

Spicy tobacco & incense lightened up by juniper & bergamot that are not obvious but you could tell that without them, Journey would too woody & dry.

For me Journey Man it’s, thank god, a modern powerhouse. Nowadays, many fragrances are excessively sweet for a man. This fragrance it’s very manly and zestful. It’s more light that other Amouage’s perfumes but not so bright like Honour Man.
Powerhouse fan, Journey Man it’s for you. Suitable for special occasions and Autumn and Winter.

When I first sampled this I was intrigued by what a £200 bottle of fragrance smelt like and how long it lasted. First impression was “OK it smells nice”. Forgetting it was on my wrist I kept catching whiffs of a gorgeous aroma before remembering it was on me. I couldn’t stop smelling it. After 8hrs it was still there which is quite rare as my skin just absorbs fragrance no matter how moisturized my skin is etc. After 14hrs and a shower in the morning it was still there! So I brought a big bottle but was rather disappointed as it doesn’t last as long as the one I sampled. Maybe 6hrs if I’m lucky. I thought perhaps a bad batch? Even though I did purchase from Harrods. Anyway, I still love it and it is my favourite Amouage.

  45. :

This is a nice one. Slightly sweet, masculine and spicy, but not a strong spice; it’s more subtle, balanced with a very slight sourness to prevent it from becoming too stuffy.
Despite its prominent notes being pepper and cypriol, it’s fresh rather than musty, not unlike D&G By Man, which has a similar fresh pepper accord.

  46. :

    4 out of 5

Explosively aromatic, fiery opening quenched just partially by delicious bergamot & bright neroli. Pepper galore, supported by cardamom & juniper berries, completes this initial luminous imagining of someone throwing orange peels & spices onto the sun’s surface.
Once the initial blast begins to settle, more spices, backed by tobacco & incense, take over to turn JM into a dry, bitter, smoky & very warm masculine fragrance. Contrary to the challenging exotic opening, where notes play interchangeable roles, the drydown resembles an everlasting steady passage through a spicy desert. The passage of a shadowy, film noir protagonist, leaving a scented trail of retro smoky-leathery confidence, outwitting the wasteland’s fiery breath.
Inspiring concept, high quality ingredients, luxurious presentation, solid performance . . . undoubtedly a fine addition to Amouage’s distinctive masculines.
    Captivating & intense.

I’m with NZFH on this, Journey Man is a beautiful, and praiseworthy Fragrangce but it’s performance is garbage. I had a direct decant of this and have used it several times just to be sure and can’t believe my nose.
Two hours. Thats all it lasts on me. Without fail, each of the three times I used it on fresh skin. Two measly hours!? No sillage or projection. I’m speechless. The scent is so good and has a, citrusy vanilla tobacco green vibe to me, but the performance is so bad I can’t justify ever buying a bottle.
    Scent 8/10
    Projection 2/10
    Sillage 1/10
    Longevity 2/10
My scent heart is sad. My wallet appreciates not having to buy this.

I enjoy this one. Spice, a hint of something sweet and boy does it last. I’m getting a full 24 on this one. Something in this reminds me of plum japonais – but definitely not similar fragrances – just the deep, dark, richness of both.

In summary: a pleasant journey, but one that ends far too soon.
Opens with a real spicy fiery kick. Very invigorating and enlivening for the wearer, which is just as well, because other people around you may not notice anything at all.
As you may have guessed already, I was very disappointed with the performance of this fragrance. It is not unreasonable to expect at least three hours of strong performance (in terms of projection and sillage) from an expensive high-quality niche fragrance. Very disappointing by any standard; and especially so by Amouage standards. I wondered if I had applied an EDT version by mistake!
At most, I have been getting 90 minutes of strong projection from this, then the whole thing collapses and dies on my skin. I have resorted to using a cheap musk to bolster the base. Not something I should EVER have to do with an Amouage!!
I think the problem lies in the construction of this fragrance: the foundation is weak. The base is some tonka bean, cypriol oil, weak leather and musk. That’s it. The strong resins typical of many Amouage fragrances, are completely absent. (Nor can I detect any incense by the way). Weak – very weak. Journey Man makes Honour Man look like a “tough guy” by comparison. 🙂
I would be grateful for a stronger reformulation!
But hey, it is a beautiful bottle, and I am still glad to have Journey Man in my collection!
UPDATE: I feel a bit kinder about the performance now – especially in warmer temperatures or with warmer skin.

Journey Man it’s something more ”european style” that middle-eastern. The heavy oudy and resinous accords of Amouage it’s not presents. Basically, this fragrance it’s builded around spicy and tobacco chords.
Personally, reminded me to 70’s and 80’s fragrances such as Bel Ami… Then, it’s rather classy and elegant.

The opening is very raw, spicy and smoky. I hesitate to use the word ‘bold’ since it’s been so abused by perfume copywriters, but in this case it’s true. This fragrance is unapologetically itself, knowing that not everyone will love it, but those who do will really love it. The tobacco is apparent throughout, giving the scent a lot of depth and a small touch of sweetness.
Also, I get a sort of lathery creaminess swimming in and out of focus. The scent overall definitely isn’t creamy, but there’s some note or combination of notes (musk? cypriol?) that combine with the spices and incense to remind me of shaving cream. Someone else mentioned soapiness, so I guess I’m not the only one to have picked up on this effect.
Anyway, a really high-quality, interesting scent with some pleasing contrasts (smoky vs. creamy, spicy vs. sweet). It’s probably too ‘rich’ to be something I’d wear often, but that’s just me.

It’s more floral than Memoir Man. There is this fresh neroli note in its background that remains there and doesn’t dry out and makes this fragrance so different from the heavy ones of Amouage, so it is easily wearable in spring and even summer without the risk of being cloying.
Amouage Journey is a rare perfume that smells completely differently on the skin than on a paper. So my advice, test the Journey on your skin to appreciate its goodness.

    What a fantastic fragrance!
If you don’t have the $ to shell out for Amouage Journey Man (it is expensive) an alternative could be Atelier’s Tobacco Nuit or Mancera’s Aoud Vanille (just maybe Molton Brown Navigation’s Scent Rogart). These are less pricy than Journey Man. All have distinct differences, yet some similarities also.
I have all four and when I got whim of this stuff, right away Tobacco Nuit, Aoud Vanille, MB Rogart, even Shisur’s sweet Saffron came to mind. Interesting how you look at the notes to compare and they are worlds apart yet, the smell is very simliar in my opinion.

One spray and you are set for the day!!!! I sprayed this on the back of my hand, dab them both together and boyyyyyyyy did this project!!! I think Amouage Journey Man is another beast mode fragrance alongside its older brother Interlude Man.
Journey Man has the balsamic sweet feel in the beginning, in addition to the smoky spices that erupts. As with I
