I have to half disagree with the people calling it linear. On me it started very much boozy-fruity (the boozy illusion likely created by the lime, pepper and cinnamon adding some sharpness to those sweet opening fruit notes). It got considerably drier on the dry-down and at that point the prominent accord very much swung to the sage-leather-sandalwood.
I say “half disagree” because this did become a skin scent within an hour on my skin, and faint enough that to smell that very different drydown you have to put your nose right on your skin – which is really too bad as that second phase is by far my favorite of the two.
Based on the scent profile I’d earmarked this for my fall bin – but I think that the projection and/or sillage might be improved by summer warmth.

Things to know: This develops over time with more complexity with woods and leather as the fig settles.. the fragrance completely flips as top notes take a back seat and base notes develop forward but woods appear. This is best after an hour for about 3 hours. This becomes very subtle but not a skin scent until 5 hours.. I applied at 7 AM and it is now 11:29 PM and I hit the gym and Havent showered yet… :P….. clean suede still. It’s really subtle and does become skin scent but it’s a good one and it stays granted I applied 6 sprays.

A great fragrance with longevity issue. Did not believe the review here, infact my honest opinion is that the votes are very generous here when they say sillage is moderate.
This is a great smelling skin scent. And it is good, leather plum combo along with fig works great.
    Scent – 9/10
Longevity – 3/10 (i get 6 hrs of longevity on Artisan Pure, for comparison)
Sillage – 1/10 (Can only detect if i put my nose in after 45 mins) This is less than soft. Soft in my book is Eternity Aqua.

A simple, fruity, white musk scent. Quite nice. Minimal projection or sillage.

This fragrance smells PHENOMENAL! This reminds me of a barbershop scent with a creamy, sweet spice to it. This one is subtle and is for sure a “people pleaser.” If you show up to an event wearing this fragrance, you can expect many compliments. The dry-down is where this scent really shines to me with the fig and plum note. All is well with is fragrance, however the only and major downside is that this scent DOES NOT LAST AT ALL! This is a commonality that runs in many John Varvatos scents, but is more noticeable in this one. You can barely smell it on your skin after 30 mins. of application. I recommend doing many sprays throughout the day to keep it going.

Nice scent but nothing wow. Linear smell during existence
I used around 14 sprays both on skin and clothes and the result was
    Sillage around 1-2 hours
    Longevity around 4- 5 hours
Refresh with another 3 sprays after 5 hours
It not last not even on clothes
So i will not buy again
Not worth more than 15 $ – go for zara fragrances cheaper options

A very solid fragrance. Nothing too bold or outgoing. This fragrance is more subtle, warm and handsome. It’s not show stealing and different but it is a general crowd pleaser and will get compliments. Well suited for many occasions.

Love it. I just wish it would last longer on my skin, three to four hours and kaput. Nonetheless I absolutely love it.

Wearing this in the fall makes me feel like the happiest man alive. Overall, you get a sweet fruity vibe from the fig and plum accompanied with a soft sandalwood and mild cinnamon. A clean, smooth leather anchors this fragrance throughout its scent life. This is a man’s fragrance, smells so put together and refined while remaining non-chalant. Something truly magical happens when this fragrance meets cool fresh air, a must try from the house of John Varvatos.
    Longevity: 6 hours
Projection: Solid first hour, turns into a suddle scent after that. Not a skin scent until the fourth hour.

Work fragrance bro lent me his travel bottle. I get the plum and fig. There’s a a leather of sorts then herbs and spices. Cinnamon, sandalwood all on a woody base. Just a touch sweet; this almost smells gourmand. The fruit has some of that artificial tinge but it’s not too bad.
JV smells interesting. Better in cooler weather and maybe more formal situations. I think this would be okay for work; not too sexy. Masculine but a lady could wear it. Maybe a little more mature. Projection and sillage feel average. Lasted five hours before becoming soft. My only complaint is something in the late dry down gives me a bit of a head ache. Prices are cheap on this one and I think the bottle looks nice. It uses some less common notes in an interesting composition. You’ll stand out a little from the masses wearing this. Nice scent John Varvatos!

This is a very nice smell
It starts with a havy leather smell after that you wil smell
A very nice sweet smell. But it doesn’t stay long.

Finally I bought this fragrance, very pleased with it, spicy powerful woody and leathery notes.
I wish to keep longer on my skin, after 3 hours the projection is poor, I can smell it just on my skin.
    I won’t buy it again.

This a good scent for the fall and winter. The dry down is amazing. You can smell plum and leather together.

The drydown is 10x better than the generic top notes. To me, it’s almost a gourmand for men. Sweet, in a clean, spiced way. It really does smell like several of the Bath and Body Works men’s colognes, except better crafted, more oils and layers. The price is very accessible so it’s worth a try if you enjoy the B&BW offerings.

Plum and fig covered in dark black leather and spiced up by a bit of cinnamon and sandalwood.
Very nice, quite sweet. The sweetnes gets more prominent in warmer temperatures whilst in winter it’s like wearing well waxed leather jacket with some smokiness around it.
    Well balanced fragrance.

After a few sniffs of this cologne I envisioned myself riding a Harley Davidson, wearing a leather jacket, racing through the woods on a cool night. What a nice scent!
I got a very strong impression of leather on the first spray but from there it got better once the wood kicked in. A smooth dark transition which I believe the union of pepper and cinnamon are involved in…light yet amazing. Not strong and safe to use for any casual occasion in cool weather like a bikers reunion. The sillage and longevity are not the best, but even after 6 hours a light sweetness remains and its lovely!
A nice piece of work and I can not wait to try the other John Varvatos colognes. The price may turn off some people but I assure you the potion is of fine quality.

I love how this has a strong presence without being too heavy. This is a light woody fragrance that don’t smell synthetic. The refreshing citrus opening is *not* lemony cartoony. The woody notes are clean and modren; like a processed wood not tree barky.
    Great juice for the price!
This is unique and easy to wear which makes it signature scent worthy.
If you blind buy this, you will not regret it. The quality is there, unlike other fragrance I’ve tried. The performance is a bit shot in the eye but you can just re-spray.

    Category:
    Oriental Woody
    From the website:
Modern, bold and sophisticated. John Varvatos
Classic Fragrance is infused with a relaxed, sensuous feeling. As elegant and masculine as it is intriguing, its subtle power conveys the attention to detail so clearly present in every John Varvatos creation. The experience of aromas includes a crisp, masculine introduction, rugged and rich heart notes, and a background of woody leather undertones with malt, balsamic, amber and hints of vanilla extract.
    Notes as per Fragrantica:
Indian fig leaf, fig fruit, coriander, clary sage, leather, lime and plum, it is spiced with cinnamon, pepper, along with wooden accords of cedar and sandalwood.
    Impression:
Opening: This is an absolutely staggering take on Suede leather. The plum infused suede leather has a creamy opening. From the moment you spray it on it hits you directly with suede leather. The leather smells so natural that it actually feels like putting on a suede leather jacket. A jacket which is not machine made, rather handmade.
    After 20-30 mins:
The leather kind of blends in with you, it feels more natural. After you put on something freshly taken out of the cupboard, with time it starts to become more comfortable from the time you’ve put it on. It exactly feels like that after 20-30 mins. It’s more like the jacket has started to sit on you and making you warm. And just after that the sweet cedar wood pops out.
    After an hour:
The woodsy notes starts to pop out. The cedar wood has a sweet undertone. The plum makes way for the leather and wood but it still subtly lingers on. At this point it feels like you are a visitor in the country side. The leather, the woods, the undertone of plum and sweet spices. If you look at the elements of this fragrance individually, it might feel like you’re in for a rough and rugged journey. But on the contrary it’s exactly the opposite. It’s so well blended that it’s exactly the opposite of rugged or rough, it is extremely smooth and sensual. It is very mature and elegant.
    Final Take:
It is a very well crafted and polished scent. The contradiction of this one is like the dynamics of a song. It’s like light and shade, a whisper to the thunder. It’s kind of invites you in and tells you all about it. The projection of this one is not good but I think it’s that kind of scent. It’s the persona which doesn’t need to announce itself. It doesn’t need to be loud. It’s confident. I only wish it had a better longevity.
    Rating:
    Smell – 5/5
    Projection and sillage – 3.5/5
    Longevity – 2/5

The leather and plum makes it smell more like a suede leather and it’s fantastic! Very masculine and one of those rare fragrances that is undeniably made for men. Definitely more for a mature guy, perhaps 35+ or so. But I can see a young dude rocking this and getting some serious female attention… especially MILF attention! When your wingman where’s Aqua Di Gio, One Million or some other sheep fragrance… wear this! You’ll be the alpha my friend all the way!
Although I prefer the flanker to this, John Varvatos Vintage, this is still a very good masculine fragrance that is incredibly different than what’s on the market today. In short, you’ll get noticed wearing this no matter your age.
I have to admit. John Varvatos has quickly become one of my favorite houses because they produce some seriously masculine, testosterone-like fragrances that every man of substance should try. Today’s metrosexual guys and emotional, tree hugging snowflakes need not buy. Trust me, it’s not your kind of fragrance if you are the emotional type. Stick to your floral, candy, innocent notes. John Varvstos is for men that don’t make excuses for being what woman love… a man that is alpha but respectable to her and others. Yes ladies, we still exist. And we wear John Varvatos.

I blind bought this juice very cheaply as part of a Craigslist lot about a year and a half ago: the way I’ve perceived it during that time has changed.
When I first smelled this juice, I perceived it as little more than a slightly more mature Abercrombie-esque juice. Clean, masculine, but ultimately sort of boring. I put it back in the fragrance bag, where it sat until today.
Today I had off work and wanted something fresh and different to wear while running errands in the 60 odd degree fall weather: this was my choice. I was quite impressed upon spraying: there was much more interest and depth there than I remembered, and I kept wanting to smell it again and again. I was enamored and began to think that this would be a much more frequent wearer in both personal and professional contexts.
However, I’m sad to say that things went downhill after the top notes wore off: within an hour, I was left with something that smelled unambiguously like baby wipes, which is not something I want to smell like in any context.
In conclusion, I think I’ll be stashing this one away for another year and a half: maybe I’ll like it more next time I pick it up.

i really like this juice. i like how the fig note comes in and out like you’re wearing two scents. i get at least 6 hours out of this maybe more. people always talk about performance but need to talk more about not taking showers for long periods of time lol. Who needs a fragrance to last two days anyway.

This John Varvatos EDT is full of happy contradictions: bold and relaxed; subtle and sophisticated; masculine but delicate; day elegance and night sensuality.
There is a couple of notes – fig/fig leaves and Tamarind – that blended with plum, tobacco, leather, thyme, amber, vanilla and not to much oud, make a unique marvelous, sweet, creamy scent. It’s a very well crafted fragrance. If it would last more it would be a real masterpiece. The dry down although a bit subtle it’s very pleasant.
    Clearly in my top 10.
The bottle is very masculine and elegant.

Edit: My rates were changed after the following recommendation:
Apply 2 sprays above your ears, 2 sprays in the neck/chest and 2 sprays in your clothes. It does not stain. The longevity of the “normal” 2 sprays behind each ear, will double and you will get a good 4 hours projection, 2~3 feet sillage and >8 hours longevity. More than enough performance!

I wore this the first month it came out. My favorite is the leather cinnamon combination. The only reason i don’t wear it any more is it does not last long.1-2 hours max

Ahead of it’s time. One of my favorites, and also my signature scent.
John Varvatos by John Varvatos along with the rest of the JV line get hated on by many because of the poor projection and longevity. Well guess what? You can get a 4.2 oz bottle for ~35ish dollars. Eau de toilette’s are also not designed to be huge performers. Most only last around 3-6 hours and project moderately. I can’t fathom why so many, even here on Fragrantica, expect their EDT’s to be performance beasts, and any fragrance that falls short is dismissed as an inferior product. With that in mind, let’s look at what JV does right and celebrate that instead.
The first and original JV scent for men is my favorite of them all. It is sweet, seductive, mature, classy, and a number of other positive things. It opens up with a blast of dried fruit, particularly the fig, fig leaf, plum and medjool date fruit. This accord lasts pretty much until the scent dries down completely. In that time frame, the leather and woodsy notes start to reveal themselves. JV must have realized that this dried fruit/leather accord is the key to the scent, and then built on top of this accord. This was a wonderful choice, as every note in this fragrance has been blended and proportioned to compliment this accord. What we get is a beautiful, smooth, masculine scent that women and men alike drool over.
Men, this is the scent to wear when you want your woman to be all over you. I can’t think of any situation this fragrance would be a poor choice for, except maybe the club because Eros, Ultra Male, and the scents that the others are wearing will cut through your JV.
If you apply this fragrance correctly, which I doubt many people do, you will find that it performs how an EDT should. You will smell it lingering around your head and wrists for ~4 hours or so. Others in your personal space will get a slight wiff of it as well, but only if they are within a foot or so of you. And trust me, they will want to get closer than that.
The presentation is excellent too. The bottle is strapped with black leather. This scent is also wholely original. At the time it was released, no other scent smelled quite like it. This makes the wearer stand out from the rest, even today.
Altogether, this is an excellent choice for your next fragrance purchase, or perhaps your first purchase. I will be buying two backup bottles soon (shout out to eBay for amazing pricing), and I will never allow myself to run out of this amazing juice.
    Rating: 9.25/10
    EDIT**
I still LOVE JV by JV, but have decided to wear it more so for special occasions, such as dates. I have recently added many new fragrances to my collection that I can wear more often, and thus, have wore this less. It is not my signature scent anymore, but by all means, this is still a great option.

i think this came ahead of its time. back then the focus was more on aquatic and citrus based colognes. also the marketing could have been better.
i can only imagine if dior or chanel would have launched this.
i hope they read this and release an intense or eau de perfume version of it.

Oh well, you can’t compose the word “Longevity” out of words “John Varvatos”.
Too bad because the scent is absolutely superb.
//I have a bottle bought loooong time ago, roughly when Lennon, Lenin, and Napoleon were alive. No idea on how does the current formulation works and if it’s still as nice as it was.

  34. :

    3 out of 5

I totally under estimated this one… For me, longevity is beastly! But projection is moderate.
Everyone talks about scents that smell synthetic, and that’s my opinion on this one for sure, but that by no means should imply that it smells bad. Quite the contrary, this smells great! But leather in and of itself should constitute synthetic, technically, so no surprise there (although some pull it off quite realistically).
Overall though, a good buy for the money! Great performance, decent scent, albeit not my favorite leather, but it’s pretty good!

To me JVbyJV is a very sweet fragrance and could get easily dismissed upon first sniff, but this fragrance when given time is masculine and sexy. The opening is simply a dried fruit blast with a bit of leather, citrus and woods in the background, but as the fragrance progresses we get some of the herbal notes. The sage for me comes through nice and clear as well as the pepper. Meanwhile, The plum, fig and tamarind form this evolutionary union towards the dry down, always maintaining a sweet fruity accord until the amber and cedar arrive giving it an almost vanilla finish. This is great for the guy in his thirties, and great for formal to informal occasions. It Is a relaxing scent and should be enjoyed under a nice dress shirt.

The GOAT. The signature is only rivaled by the vintage but this Varvatos scent is one of my absolute favorite scents. The blend of Fig, Leather, and plum captures everything you need in a night out scent for a man my age. 30+ and older should have this scent. if you own a suit, you wear this scent. let’s be honest, if you’re taking a lady out and you plan on plowing the field later, wear this scent. It’s a classic male personified.
    9.5/10 scent
    8/10 longevity

give it some points for the gift sets that you may find for this and it should be in every males possession.

This is my absolute favorite to smell on my boyfriend. Plum and suede are my one of my favorite note combinations of all time, regardless of the “gender” of the fragrance. The woody notes add depth and masculinity to it. This is warm and sexy, but with a comfy feel. To me it embodies what it feels like to snuggle up in your crush’s sweater. I seriously can’t get enough of my boyfriend when he wears this one (and I wouldn’t mind wearing it either)! Even better, it’s readily available for cheap. I’m tempted to get my own bottle!

This is the smell for 30-40 age group, old enough man to be seen as developed personality, though still young enough to be considered sexy and impulsive.

This fragrance is great and although it’s gotten compliments (still not 1 of my better compliment getters) it’s a fragrance I wear mostly for myself !
John varvatos is a fragrance that’s leathery, slightly fruity and sweet, slightly smoky but it’s a very warm and comforting fragrance. I don’t know why but this fragrance reminds me of the smell of a campfire and I mean that in the best of ways.
This has a great smell but would be better if it projected better. This lasts me anywhere from 6-10 hours but unfortunately only has noticeable projection for about an hour.
Which leads me to my next point. Less is more with this fragrance (3-5 sprays) Any more sprays than that and this fragrance becomes cloying and harsh and it actually doesn’t project any further out but that same bubble of fragrance you have around you just becomes more overbearing the more sprays you go.
Overall rating— 7 out of 10 ! Great fall/winter scent but unfortunately I can’t give it a higher because of performance

I smelled this perfume a week back. I usually don’t like men’s perfume as most of the notes in them smell like they are trying hard to be macho. This stood out like a gentleman in the crowd. My first boyfriend used to wear something similar. Maybe because of that I liked it? IDK. But I like how it smells.

  50. :

I seriously can’t smell this for more than 10 seconds. It seems to just vanish into thin air. Very disappointing as it is not exactly a cheap toilette.
I would never ever buy this again.

  51. :

This is the perfect casual sweet scent. most of the times sweet scents are better suited for clubbing/date/night out because of the cloying qualities that comes with those type of scents.
To me John Varvatos evoques being in a wood cabin with the fireplace on, and i’m in with my friends playing jenga, laughing and having a great time. don’t get me wrong this scent is good for any occasion, but the little projection and longevity makes it not to good for going out.
With my body chemistry this scent works wonders, and it makes me feel that i’m not wearing cologne but instead my own natural scent.
it is cozy, warm, gentle, elegant and playful at the same time. one of the best all around scents out there, although I wished it had better longevity.
    9/10

I very much prefer JV Vintage over this. The opening to this reminds me of a white board marker and can easily get cloying. I don’t mind the scent, I just feel I have better options and would much rather use John Varvatos Vintage over this.

Agreed this is not a great skin scent (actually very few are), but on clothing JV will last for days with excellent silage. So for everyone complaining about the longevity, try spritzing on your shirt/t-shirt. I can pretty well guarantee your experience will be dramatically different. It’s a terrific fragrance that just happens to work better on clothing.

I bought this in my quest for my quintessential leather fragrance. Oh, I love it alright. Unmistakeable dark dried fruit note, I guess it’s plum. Normally I wouldn’t like such an unusual note, but somehow it blends seamlessly with the underlying modern leather to make a smooth, sensual and classy fragrance.
Leather can have that effect of maturity, possibly because we’re reminded of old leather bound books. Maybe the dark plum is a masterstroke to lift the shackles off the leather and let it speak.
I like it at work because it’s serious, almost a thinking man’s fragrance, whilst still staying modern and not becoming square or stale. An unusual dark fruit note might usually be too polarising for a workplace, but the low sillage means it’s ok.
Longevity is terrible unfortunately. Is be undetectable by lunchtime when I spray it in the morning. (*edit* I don’t know what I was smoking at the time of writing. Longevity is actually decent, although projection somewhat subtle).

To be honest with this fragrance it smells great and i love it,,,it is very light scent it makes you feel fresh, the best time for use is in early morning or during the hot sunny day,,,it can last 2-4 hours on cloths i don’t know how long will last on my skin that is good if you have some meeting or specail event that last only 1-2 hours…Varvatos have to work on this fragrance to make them close to EDP,because this is not cheap fragrance here in my country, cost around $79 NZD i was lucky today was special facotry sale $35 75ml bottle and i manage to get 2 bottles…For this fragrance $35 is ok price but $79 is not worth that much…
    Silage 5/10

Varvatos by John Varvatos- This is a powdery cologne with a very low sillage, mostly a skin scent, The longevity was medium, fading dramatically as the hours rolled on. Given the notes listed I expected something more exotic, I did not experience any of the fig leave I was hoping to get, but was disappointed to find I just got another after bath powdery cologne. I personally prefer more funk, wood, spice and dark exotic accords, like my recent purchase of “Monsieur” By May H distributed by Parisis Parfums in Paris, an amazing new men’s fragrance they have women’s fragrances as well.
As for Varvatos- If powder and low sillage, and the smell of just finished showering attract you, by all means go get this one.

This is the most difficult review I’ve ever written. If I were going by scent alone, this would be my favourite fragrance of all time. The complexity is what makes this scent so special. It starts off as an aromatic and spicy number with a noticeable hint of cinnamon, before drying in to a warm, leathery scent. After a couple of hours, once the projection is all but gone, it becomes a sweeter, vanilla-y skin scent. It’s smooth, sexy and absolutely beautiful to smell.
So why, you may ask, is such a well balanced, good-quality fragrance so affordable? Easy-longevity is trash. I have to put at least 8-10 sprays on myself in the morning before I can even get a few whiffs of it throughout the day, and even then I’m lucky if I get 3 hours. Now it’s true that it will last a good 12 hours on clothes, but again after the first 3, it dries right in and it’s a nose-to-shirt scenario no matter how much you soak it with the stuff. Now this could all be solved if there was a parfum version, which unfortunately there’s not. While I realise that’s probably done deliberately as a means of selling more bottles, I think the designers may be underestimating how much some people would pay for an EDP version of this scent.
So for scent alone, it’s an easy 10/10
But with the crappy longevity and average sillage, it breaks my heart to say an 8/10 overall.
So please, PLEASE, release a stronger version of this scent. Name the price and I’ll buy a box of it

There’s something about the Varvatos fragrance style that I really like. Vintage is my favorite, closely followed by Artisan. Both are excellent examples of creative and interesting compositions in modern perfumery.
For Men, the original release by Varvatos doesn’t disappoint either.
Basically it’s a contemporary sweet fruity leather scent.
It opens with a combination of zesty lime and sour bergamot backed by pepper and coriander. It’s quite spicy and citric in the opening, and it’s done nicely.
The opening quickly subsides and allows the heart to come through. A nice yet subtle leather note appears. It’s a very smooth leather, though not a suede type, instead it’s more of a smooth leather couch type of leather.
It’s joined by a superbly made plum note, giving the leather an interesting fruity twist without being in the Tuscan Leather style of fruity-leather. These two notes, plum and leather, also form the backbone of the scent from this point on.
The leather-plum accord is then subtly accented by a nice fig note.
The base is fairly subtle. I get hint
