This is a classic iris cologne with soft sillage, soft projection and moderate longevity.
I get nice iris, soft leather, bergamot and mild vetiver. Simple, unisex leaning to masculine scents with great versatility. Good for mild warm weather daytime.

Very elegant scent, soft but eloquent. Iris plays with leather. Skinscent, but if it makes me want to glue my nose to my wrist, I ‘ll accept that. Very happy to have it in my collection. If you like “Iris nazarena” by Aedes de venustas but think it too expensive, give this one a try. They are different, but have the same vibe: soft iris in a leather background. I love it to pieces…

When I discovered Iris Prima online, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a sample… I was certain I would love it. Unfortunately I was wrong. I’ve tested it twice now and both times I was shockingly disappointed.
Perhaps it’s the leather note… but IP is overwhelmingly “plasticky” smelling for me. In fact, it smells just like vinyl. Even after the dry-down, that vinyl note never really goes away. It softens and I get a bit of powdery iris, but the vinyl is always there.
I’m quite shocked that it’s supposed to be unisex. Even though I don’t like it, I can definitely pick out some nice notes about it…and what I’m getting from it is distinctly feminine. I would not recommend this for men, at all.
I love the idea of Iris Prima… but it simply doesn’t smell anything like I’d hoped… or like anything I’d want to put on my body.

I love iris and therefore i tried iris prima twice, different weather and different testers. Both times it was very tame, a skin scent from the beginning. What i could smell was nice and creamy but very faint. Underwhelming…

Blind buy of the body lotion of this fragrance based on all the positive reviews here. Very pleased. Sheer indulgence.A unique and special scent.

Iris Prima is an extraordinary perfume , an incontestable masterpiece. I’ve never smelt something similar or close to it yet but still it reminds me of things and places. The notes are in harmony with each other, yet I can detect them separately. The perfume opens with a zesty, fresh and sour bergamot combined with red pepper. The bergamot in this feels so realistic to me, it’s like squeezing it out and you get that freshness right in your nose. But the true protagonist of the scent is Leather which is omnipresent from the opening to the drydown. What changes is the nuances that Leather takes while accompanied with various notes during the different stages. In the opening I get Leather and bergamot for some fresh vibes, during development I get Leather and Iris for some dry, powdery shades and finally on the drydown I catch whiffs of Leather and sweet notes of vanilla, Amber and Jasmine. It’s a fragrance created so masterfully and majestically that is unmistakable, it has a remarkable DNA that identifies it from the other fragrances.
On my skin the perfume has great longevity but it’s not loud, it sits close to skin and I catch wafts all along. Sillage is rather moderate but present and I love to smell it when it quietly lays on my skin for hours, showing its different facets during the stages of development.

This was a blind buy on Black Friday based on the reviews I had to have it. I am LOVING this one. The aroma is the cleanest, softest and most feminine non offensive scent ever. It’s unique and therefore it is signature worthy. The only down side is I really wish it was stronger and lasted longer. It is sort of a fader. Honestly I could not see anyone disliking this other then the soft silage and lasting power.
UPDATE: 3 hours later. Loving this even more. Yes it’s a fader but something mysterious seems to happen on the skin. I am detecting Patchouli in here. It sneaks it’s way out about 8-10 hours later stretching the lasting power to insane levels. What starts off as a good girl Iris develops into a slightly naughty yet clean gorgeous aroma. Not bad girl but I think it’s the leather. Good Lord it’s fabulous. BEST blind buy in a long time!

Penhaligon’s Iris Prima is my first niche house perfume and I couldn’t be more satisfied with my purchase as this perfume is revealing itself each day more a gorgeous, rare pearl amongst all the perfumes I have or have smelt before. Being a blind buy I didn’t know what to expect from it but this is one of the most stunning perfumes, that starts off beautiful and when it develops with every hour that passes it becomes even more interesting, powdery with a prominent leather note and a tart vibe. The perfume is really longlasting on my skin and I particularly love the sour and fresh smell of bergamot that lingers after many hours I’ve applied.
A real gem created by the hand (or nose) of Alberto Morillas, one of my favourite perfumers and after some minutes I had applied the scent on my wrist I could tell it bares the typical DNA of Morillas perfumes. This is a niche perfume and it also has the genetics of niche but when it developed on my skin I had the impression I had smelt this fragrance before, not the same of course but very similar and I couldn’t help but think of Lanvin Oxygene for women. They are both created by Morillas and even though they have very different notes still they are powdery and tart and very subtly, almost not noticeably sweet which is a winner for me because I love Oxygene so much and got so upset knowing that it’s now discontinued. Oxygene is more sweet though and has that distinguishable milk note while Iris Prima is less sweet and more crisp. Now I can use Iris Prima more being that it reminds me so much of Oxygene and keep the few ml of Oxygene to sniff from time to time for nostalgy.

Right from the beginning you can feel the iris. It is a nice, sweet, creamy iris. I love iris with all its facets.
The centre of the fragrance is about iris wrapped in sweet jasmine and sprinkled with spices.
The base brings a leathery touch to the iris as if you have crushed an iris flower in a leathery glove. The leather smell from the glove remains in the iris flower and the result is a magnificent odour: a leathery iris.
The base is creamy, sweet and powdery. The longevity is good. For me this is a scent close to the skin.
If you like iris note in perfume you should try Iris Prima.

Leathery, sweet in a powdery/floral/oriental way, spicy & woody, classy, ladylike, heavy for summer but light for winter, perfect for autumn.
Pretty certain that 16 years old me would hate this and say “smells like a posh old lady, bleaaargh.” 11 years have passed and grownup me thinks this is a wonderful, beautiful scent. At first sniff, I caught a combination of sweetness, powder and floral, I pictured dancers’ dressing room full of cosmetics and flowers. As it dried down, sweetness was shooed away and there came leathery bitterness but with a spicy/woody warmness; like the dancers train hard, their bodies heating up. I don’t get bergamot at all, incense-y vanilla, powdery iris and leather are the ones that dance on my skin. It has an OK longevity but doesn’t have much silage unless you splash it all over your body. Iris Prima is more of a wannabe Prima for me, still a bit rough but almost there… Toi toi toi to dancers everywhere, you all are my heroes (since I gave up long ago).

  12. :

My first reaction to this perfume: It was so beautiful that made me wanna cry.
After a while: The leather, animalic and balsamic accords showed up and made me sick.
What a pity! Not for me.

  13. :

Soft amber, gentle woods, clean citrus and the floral touch of powdery iris. If there was ever a hint of leather, it’s the peachy softness of a baby’s tender, clean skin.
Iris Prima is the fragrance of delicately sweet innocence. Nary a Degas ballerina at the rehearsal, but a fluttering of Raphael cherubs.

    Fragrance Review For Iris Prima
    Penhaligon’s
    Top Notes
    Bergamot Pink Pepper
    Middle Notes
    Iris Jasmine
    Base Notes
Leather Sandalwood Vetiver Amber Vanilla Benzoin
A beautifully light subtle scent, this is a dreamy iris and vanilla fragrance. It has a weak projection, poor sillage and either my skin eats it up quickly or it has a short life span for a fragrance. It’s not even an eau de toilette. It’s a body mist. Iris body mist. But not bad a’t-‘all! This fragrance was inspired by the world of ballet and dancers. At Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, at a launch event there, ballet dancers pirouetted and jeted around the boutique to the amusement of the buyers. But like others have stated in their respective reviews, including a ballerina, Iris Prima isn’t really evocative of a prima ballerina or the world of professional ballet. I can understand what they were going for and I sometimes get the “ballet” association. The powdery notes, the iris, orris root, is delicate and feminine. It smells more of feminine products like pastel make-up and talc powder which one can associate with the dressing room of a classical old time prima ballerina say with American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, or Russia’s own Mariinsky Theater Kirov Ballet or the old French Ballet Russes De Monte Carlo under Sergei Diaghilev. She is a beautiful slender girl, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and a gossamer pink or peach colored tutu, or white, Swan Lake, Odette, or Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. But I have grown tired of powdery make up scents after so many in my life. I enjoy this from time to time when it makes me feel more like a runway model during Fashion Week. If only the suede-leather note had a shoe scent that would have reminded me of pretty high heel shoes. You know what it almost goes there but it stays in the make up and handbag aroma I like as well.
The opening note is a little fresh bergamot orange and a distinct pepper note which never lasts too long. The florals come through very quickly. We inhale the perfume of the iris flower which performs a pas de deux with the jasmine. In Penhaligon’s noses defense, this is a very well paired jasmine and iris although it’s not very original. It reminds me of other jasmine and iris perfumes based on powdery iris like Violet Blonde by Tom Ford or even Guerlain’s Shalimar Parfum Initial. This is a slightly starchy inky sweet powdery iris and a bright almost cloying jasmine. In Shalimar Initial there is more of a fragrance. I always detect the vanilla and sandalwood note in Initial. Always. Very pretty. In Violet Blonde the shoe like elegant suede leather is really more pronounced and it smells fantastic. Here the florals and leather note barely come forth. They are so fugacious and tenuous that they look more like pulverized clouds of powder when seen in the air. This could have been a remarkable iris based fragrance had they stepped up the iris in all her glory or perhaps added similar notes like violet, or powder florals of heliotrope and rose. But instead they played it safe and kept it modern and wearable as a skin freshening day wear scent. This is a make up scent that matches up with your loveliest lipstick color and eye make up when you want to go out in the day looking womanly and gorgeous but without having to make a big statement.
Prima matches with blouses and dressy shirts for semi formal occasions and with minis and dresses for the consciously feminine girl. She is an aspiring actress or model and she is young and won’t really gravitate toward the mature vintages of similar iris and make up scents like Yves Saint Laurent Paris or Parfum Initial Shalimar but might try some Chanel Misia, Frederic Malles’ Lipstick Rose, or Jo Malone Peony And Blush Suede. These are modern iris and powdery pin up boudoir scents and Iris Prima is in the same class.
At the dry down when the base notes emerge and play their own performance of the ballet. They should be heavy hitters but these are subdued. I detect only the lightest sandalwood and a discernable amber and green vetiver. There’s equal parts musk and leather and a vanilla which matches up with powdery iris. The vanilla is pleasant but a total skin scent like vanilla that matches with your vanilla colored flesh tone skin. I think this is a boudoir perfume and would smell very nice on lingerie. I will wear this to bed or when I want to smell like make up on a casual get together with girlfriends. Not bad. Not amazing but not cheap either.

I received a mini set of Penhaligon’s fragrances, and though I loved them all, Iris Prima was the most special. On my skin, the scent stays a true iris with a creamy suede note, and smells luxe. After four hours the scent magnifies on my skin, with the sillage growing over time. There is something about my body chemistry that meshes so well with the notes. I adore this in all but the hottest most humid weather. It is cozy, sexy, and something I am likely to buy again and again.

  16. :

    3 out of 5

This was a little disappointing. It’s not bad, but it’s not special, like I wanted and expected it to be. It’s pretty light, and not a sillage monster in any way. On first application, I get a lot of iris and powder. During the immediate drydown, the leather comes in a little bit…and after the first couple of minutes, this becomes very soapy. After about two hours, it’s strictly a skin scent. It’s a lot sweeter, mostly amber and leather.
This is very light, totally innocuous, and perfectly nice. But it’s not much beyond that.
As a small-time ballerina myself, this is not in any way reminiscent of the art. Not the shoes, not the theatre, not the sweat or the competition or the cattiness or the jealousy. This is just a nice, normal, office scent. Disappointing.

An iris, full of bergamot and vetiver, Iris Prima is exceedingly dry and masculine on my skin. No sweetness or vanilla for me, definitelyI an Iris in the desert.

I just received this from my secret santa and I am in love. I’ve sampled it before but to be able to spritz with abandon is an entirely different thing! It has all of my favorite elements – it is fresh and sparkling (bergamot), yet warm and cuddly (vanilla and benzoin) and altogether unique. The leather is so soft and delicate and really does remind me of ballet slippers. The fragrance calls to mind dancers warming up with their cozy leg warmers and soft pink wrap sweaters in a studio where the sunlight pours in over the gleaming wood floors and gracefulness abounds.

Tested it at Penhaligon’s store and liked it on paper but didn’t last even 30 mins on my skin. Was very disappointed.

  20. :

this iris is powdery with other florals mixed in and a bit aquatic; I smell no leather and I have a nose.

  21. :

    3 out of 5

Amazing, beautiful, subtle yet not at all boring, on the contrary. I love it! However, I don’t know if I can wear it anymore, at least on my skin because it gives me itchy skin rash. Really a pity! This would be a perfect fragrance for autumn and winter daytime wear, also in office, and anytime. Longevity is good and sillage is moderate which is perfect for a daytime perfume.

  22. :

    4 out of 5

Starts off with a lovely starchy/woody iris, then becomes nutty, creamy and sweet – at this stage it reminds me of Narciso Poudree, but into drydown the soft suedey leather appears and from then on develops into a powdery dry suede-like musk.
It’s more sophisticated than Poudree, more sensual I’d say. Though it whispers softly texture and sillage-wise, it lasts a long time (probably a good date night perfume!)
Very easy to wear, lovely for day-time and casual evenings. Big like

  23. :

The vetiver in this makes it start out smelling very much like Bottega like others mentioned. As it dries down the Iris takes hold, smelling creamy and fresh. Very lovely floral on my skin. It’s earthy and quite feminine, another beautiful sonnet from Morillas.

  24. :

    3 out of 5

    Woody Blue Iris
When you put a lot of bergamot in with iris, and add a nice backdrop of vetiver, the effect to my nose is a twilight blue iris accord. That probably doesn’t make sense, but it’s just the immediate visualization I get when I wear this. The bergamot infused iris lasts a long time on me, at least an hour, which is a lot for topnotes.
The bergamot falls away, the iris stays woody with vetiver, and a soft suede accord appears, accented with a hint of florals. Iris Prima gets dustier as is wears down, a kind of slightly resinous, slightly sandalwood accent to the suede. The far base has no iris at all but is a nice skin scent of dusky wood notes, resins, and suede.
This is very beautiful and lies somewhere between the original Bottega Veneta (for suede & style) Parfums d’Empire Cuir Ottoman (for woody iris “leather”) and Miller Harris Terre d’Iris (the only other perfume that has that strange blue bergamot-iris note.)
Be warned though, after the first hour, this wears very softly on the skin and lasts 6 hours tops.

  25. :

    3 out of 5

There’s a soft flash of bergamot and the curtain rises; not on a Prima Ballerina in some evocative pose, nor even on several ballerinas ready to dance. The curtain rises on the dressing room, empty of the ballerinas. A powdery iris of quality, long lasting makeup permeates the air, but softly. And your gaze turns away from the mirrored vanities to the shelves where the shoes are kept, the soft suede soles become noticeable; they are the scent. I can barely smell it, unless I put my nose to my wrist, but when I do there’s a gorgeously blended powdery/soft/warm iris suede. The dancers aren’t here, it would need some musk for that; the frisson of energy and excited preparation for a show. Or for the Prima Ballerina it is seeking with its name, it would need the dirty musk of sweaty exhaustion, suffused with piles of fresh roses filling the front edge of the stage, tossed by adoring fans. It’s beautiful but it doesn’t project and it doesn’t last.

~ Not a review just an impulse thought. This is a breathtaking Iris but contrary to the label it is not unisex and rightfully so this is a lovely soft suede and slightly floral scent that is meant for the feminine perfection of a woman’s skin!
    Kind Regards, Plat ~
    Very Appealing – 10/10
Performance – Reapply it’s worth it!

I really, really like this. In fact, I love the notes, just not the longevity or sillage.
I love the cool, ice cream effect of the vetiver and bergamot, with the soft iris and suede and the woody, more masculine dry down. This is one to “wear for yourself” as they say, as no one else will notice it.
I do find Bottega Veneta, No 19 poudré and Daim Blond all offer similar themes to this, so they may be worth checking if you felt frustrated by the very low volume with this one.

  28. :

    4 out of 5

Dry leather with a citrus opening that turns into a slightly sweet, distinctively powdery iris as time goes on. I could see how some of that dryness would come from vetiver. It’s almost a bit like walking through a rare books repository. Very appealing. Doesn’t quite have the same punch as other leathers like Rien, but one doesn’t need to nasally kickbox every day. 🙂
According to other reviews, the bergamot is not that prominent- but for me, the opening is all about it. I’m glad, because bergamot usually hides from me.
My main objection to this, that keeps me from falling for it completely, are the longevity and price. Longevity is about three to four hours, and then save a bit of powderiness on the skin, it’s gone.

  29. :

Leggero, un po’ polveroso e leggermente cipriato, è un profumo timido. Un profumo che non pretende, discreto. L’iris spicca sulle altre note, ma rimane comunque un po’ frenata.

Oh. I was so expecting a Prima Donna, a robust, iris perfume, but instead got a background dancer.
I usually don’t spray on my neck, but this one I had to spray twice just to get the scent going. Plus 5 sprays on my shirt…
How should I express this perfume… hmmmm
Ghostly perfume!! You feel the presence, but when you turn around, nothing… Iris Prima is like that.
It is a pretty perfume, but simply not significant and doesn’t make any statement to me.
After Peoneve, which I madly fell in love with, I was expecting something similar from Iris Prima. Mind blowing scent…
Interestingly, 3 hours after spraying Iris Prima, the perfume somehow began to build up and became more prominent. Isn’t it usually the other way around? Strong to week?
Iris Prima, at least to me, is completely the opposite. I couldn’t smell much in the beginning, but as time passes, I could notice something sweet, then something leathery (like rosmarin said, suede like) and powdery.

  31. :

    5 out of 5

This is a powdery ,spicy iris, leathery perfume. To me,this is more feminine than masculine, maybe because it has that amber-vanilla notes in it. But i knew that it has something in common with a man fragrance. But i was not able to remember which one. Now i know. This is the feminine version of Christian Dior Home (not Home Intense). It has the same powdery ,leathery ,iris sensation. I think Dior Home is a masculine fragrance because it has that lavender-patchouli notes in it. I checked the notes and they really have few in common-iris,leather,vetiver,amber,bergamot. Both are warm fragrances- Dior has the cacao-amber notes, and Iris Prima has that combination between vanilla and amber. They are beautiful perfumes. Iris Prima is so sophisticated ,because of that leather. But is not an animalic leather,is more like suede. However,it’s very feminine and beautiful fragrance. I think it’s my favourite from the house of Penhaligon’s.

  32. :

    4 out of 5

Starts off sparkly and moves into powdery soft iris scent. I love it in winter on cold crisp days that matches its gentle character, I find it lasts well, stay close to me, the type of perfume I like best.

  33. :

    3 out of 5

Grey, slightly powdery, suede Iris with just enough rooty earth. There’s an almost “sweet” and gentle leather, which I can definitely see evoking ballet practice shoes. In the dry down the powder recedes and there’s a good streak of vanilla, but you’re going to have to jam your wrist to your nose to get the slightest whiff of it. I’d say this fragrance teeters on the edge of old lady, but avoids falling in. Phew.
Like every Penhaligon’s fragrance, it’s nice, it’s pleasant in an understated way, but it’s just not enough. It needs to project more than a centimeter off my skin and to have something more interesting going on. It smells like a good idea that they didn’t put enough effort into executing, even though they could have if they had really wanted to. The idea and the basic parts are there, but it falls short. It’s not good enough.

Actually, not really : “Please tell us which one you would like to receive in the comments section below. Your reviews of these fragrances either below or on the product pages themselves here at Fragrantica are most welcome!”
Reviews are welcomed here, not applications for contest. Especially, if “reviews” consist of “I would love to win” and “I think it could smell like..”. If I would be searching for a real review, I’d be annoyed with reading all these useless comments, until getting to real ones.

  35. :

I hope these “i would love to win this” comments will be deleted eventually.
Seriously, people – can’t you read properly?
It’s enough we leave our wishes in giveaway comment section as it supposed to be, why turn perfume page into huge and useless pile of “wanna win”?

My sister-in law gave me a sampler set of Penhaligon fragrances a few years ago, and they were all marvelous–I am not familiar with this one, but I have a wonderful White Iris fragrance from another British fragrance company, Bronley, and I love it–so this would be my choice If I win. Iris is a warm, non-sweet floral note with staying power and any scent with jasmine tend to work for me! I also love the ballet connection–grace and elegance! Thank you for the opportunity!

My choice is Penhaligon’s Iris Prima for several reasons. The first reason is that, when it comes to fragrances, I like the venerable, old companies that have either survived or been reborn: LT Piver was founded in 1774, Houbigant in 1775, Lubin in 1798 and Penhaligon’s dates from the 1860’s.
Another reason for my choosing Penhaligon’s is a bit more circuitous. Back in 1968, I was living in Paris. I had already worn Penhaligon’s fragrances, but could not find them in Paris. Then I read a magazine article indicating that a small shop located a block from where I was living was selling them. I went to the shop, located inconspicuously on the Boulevard Saint-Germain–it was called Diptyque. Indeed, they had Penhaligon’s on a shelf. But the proprietor informed me that his firm had just launched its own fragrance called L’Eau. I thought, why not try something new? Since then, I have worn most of Diptyque’s fragrances–my favorites are still L’Eau and L’Autre and Philosykos–and Diptyque itself now distributes is dozens of wares worldwide.
So I’ve been linked with both Penhaligon’s and Diptyque for well nigh half a century!

One of my favorite perfumes. Really want to receive on FRAGRANCENET.COM giveaway. The best smell ever. I am in love with Iris perfumes, such as Iris Nobile, Iris poudre, Iris Violet and Iris Tubereuse. They are so different, among them the Iris Prima is the best one, so striking and so memorable. Not obsessive but always somewhere next by you. My love

I have a weakness for Iris scents and am just experimenting with leather fumes and this is gorgeous! It’s a very non offensive scent but the leather is there and it’s a lovely, almost suede smell to my nose, it’s one I will certainly repurchase when I run out.The bottle is also cute with its suede label, a nice touch. Despite the name this is not just all about iris, combined with that heavenly leather note is vanilla and it’s quite beautiful.

I received this perfume in a sample gift pack, and it was the first one I tried, drawn to it by its name. It was launched in 2013 and the Nose behind this fragrance is Alberto Morillas. The Top notes are bergamot, green Amber and pink pepper; middle notes are iris and jasmine; base notes are leather, vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver and benzoin.
It opens with a blast of the bergamot and pepper, – fresh and classy which soon settles into the Iris, quite powdery and floral. I cannot detect any jasmine at all but I have no complaints as although I love the jasmine flower I am yet to find a perfume that truly represents the fragrance of the actual flower. The iris is beautiful. It has a vintage feel to it. Perhaps in that vein it’s an “old” fragrance, not a modern one. It reminds me of not so much a prima ballerina but more so of the elegantly dressed ladies out for an evening at the ballet, sitting in their box with their silk gloved hands around dainty diamanté clutches. Yes, it’s a perfume one can wear to see the Royal Ballet. On that, I will agree with Penhaligon.
The sillage is not great with me. It sits very close to my skin. The longevity is not great for me either although the vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver combination has a lovely classy feel. There is something missing for me. Rather than a perfume that reminds me of Dame Margot Fonteyn or Svetlana Zakharova in their best roles, it is a perfume in waiting – a First Soloist waiting to bloom into a principal.
A Lilac Fairy than Sleeping Beauty.

Ok. So you`re standing in a high end store that sells shoes, bags, gloves and so on. They always have this smell in these types of stores.
You pick up a couple of sleek leather gloves. It`s great quality. The leather is super soft, and you get this lovely brand new leather smell from them.
That is exactly what this perfume smells like to me. Reminds of shopping for christmas gifts. Amazing.

I find this scent so intriguing! While I don’t usually like iris scents, this one is so well blended and interesting I can’t stop sniffing it.
This is a cool, clean iris scent spritzed on a beloved, well-worn leather jacket.

Lately a local beauty brand started importing some of Penhaglion’s perfumes.
Sniffing all those I could put my hands on, I took an instant liking to this one.
It took me some time figure out whether I love it or just like it a lot. After a few times I wore it on my skin, I know now that this is love.
Leather scents combined with a powdery iris seem like an easy enough scent, yet here the beauty comes both from the thought put into creating a well balanced duo of the two, and also from adding the right notes to round it up perfectly – vetiver, sandalwood, pepper, a touch of citrusy notes.
Since this perfume takes somewhat different turns on different skins, IMO because of the various undertones, I suggest to try before you buy.
