Description

The fragrance presented in 2008 by Sean John is named egocentrically I am King – as a statement for all men, who care about themselves, respect their own attitudes and believe in themselves, and view themselves as kings, by that.

The perfume arrived on the market in December, exclusively at Macy’s, and available worldwide from February 2009. Sean John Combs explains his attitude about the name of the fragrance, that it is a matter of positive affirmations. If somebody says that he will not make it and that he is a loser, then that is exactly what will happen. In the case we say we are kings or queens, we will have success. This statement has nothing to do with arrogance. ˝I am King – is not a statement about me personally, but a motto of all men who will buy this fragrance.˝, says Combs.

The perfume opens with aromas of tangerine juice, orange, cranberry and French berries. The heart incorporates accords of Kir Royal cocktail; currant buds and leaves cream, champagne and cold Mediterranean aquatic notes. The base notes introduce scents of key lime pie, lemon cream, rich labdanum extract, cedar, vetiver, white moss, sandalwood essence and pure powdery accords.

The perfume I Am King is available in two amounts, as 50 and 100 ml EDT, with 100ml after shave balsam, 200ml bath and 75ml deodorant.

I Am King was created by Karyn Khoury, Trudi Loren and IFF.

Sean John I Am King is a scent I got because my then girlfriend liked the deodorant spray and the way it smelt on me. So I got the 1oz bottle based on my love of Unforgivable and Sean John. I got it towards the end of our relationship and it took me a while to go back to it for a review due to both seasonality and the relationship.
Sean John I Am King has some similarities to my nose of Tommy Hilfiger Tommy. Just a more aquatic. I am not a fan of Tommy, but this I like. Tommy to my nose is tart with the cranberry while in I Am King, it is more along the lines of the cranberry in Polo Red.
I Am King has a really strong open. Cranberry and tangerine dominate the open with some slight orange breaking through. In the mid, I notice the sea water with a slight cassis. In the base, I mostly notice the musk like labdanum and some wood. The lemon, vetiver and oakmoss are not really in this fragrance.
I Am King is nice but limited in use and in length. I Am King lasts about 4 hours on my skin with slightly moderate sillage for about one. I Am King is a casual and work scent for spring, summer and the warmer fall days and that’s it.
I rate Sean John I Am King a 6.4 out of 10. It is nice but I find the scent is good but not a great performer like other Sean John offerings. I don’t quite find it in the 3 AM territory, but I think I’ll only use this 1 oz and be done with I Am King.

Smells exactly like Azzaro Chrome Sport but it’s not as strong as Azzaro, it’s long lasting I still smell it on me since 8:30am and it is now 2:05pm… it’s not to over powering at all.. really good scent

Smells like you left a McDonald’s soda cup in your car for a while. Like a separated syrupy Sierra Mist, or Sprite, or 7up. Its fresh and all, but just splash on some soda like aftershave and save some money

Opens with a fresh watery citrus, and quickly dries into a powdery scent, which must be the labdanum. Somewhat of a gender neutral scent, considering the floral powder that emerges. Fades into a subtle fruitiness, and does so very quickly. The open will not make it out of your bathroom/bedroom, and by the time you’re out the door, you’re well into the finish. Nice if you want a fruit cloud around you for a few minutes, but not a good daily scent.

I Am King had so much potential but only BARELY hits the mark.
I Am King opens with beaming sunny salicylates and tart, sour citrus fruits. Once things settle after a minute, we are left with a tart, mouth watering citrus melange that buries itself in the skin. There is absolutely no throw to this fragrance at all. I marinate myself in this and nothing lasts for more than a good 15 minutes.
Skip I Am King and go for Eclectic Collections’ “Carte Blanche.”
It’s a clone of I Am King with better longevity.

Smells straight. But I can walk to the corner store and it’s already gone…….WTF

Got this in the 1.7 oz and my girl at the time said it’s just as good as ck one and acqua di gio. Ok I figured I own it now, let’s try it. Well after about 10 seconds, all I could smell was a synthetic/detergent smell, the synthetic detergent would not go away, and 20 minutes later it was completely gone, Nada, nothing. Worse longevity ever. Not even worth 99 cents, this was a complete miss. Come on puffy, you can do much better than this………

    Hi friends,
I wanted to treat myself because I accomplished some major goals and I dbl purchased kokorico and iamking just to get some balance ;).
iamking is something I wore for a week when it first came out. I had one of those spray vial testers. At first wear, I thought “why, puffy, why?” It smells like I’m eating a Tangerine jolly rancher (from the blue bag).
A week later, I was trying to mask the smell of smoke, and I put it on and pps were drawn to me and I started to enjoy it. Probably 4 compliments in 2 hrs and an extended hug 😉 and …
I couldn’t find it for cheap here in Toronto so I thought no point since Tangerines can get pretty tiresome to smell every day (on me, the fragrance is tangerine from opening, to mid, to base).
Well I just found this, xyears later and 20$ for a 30ml (1oz). SURE, why the hell not? But at 30 yrs old now and in an office, I’m not sure if I want to smell like tangerines => alas, weekend wear for me.
For me, I would buy/keep it over Rocawear 9 which is slightly bitter; bvlgari aqva which is more sour-seaweedy/watery; and givenchy play sport which is more musky; also clinique happy which is just less frag, and even Armani ADG, which I have always found makes me smell like pee…and l’eau d’issey which makes me smell like aunty.
Right now, my citrus frags that I will keep in rotation are (in order of love)
    1. versace homme (all year citrus)
    2. farenheit aqua
    3. hugo red + Gucci Guilty(winter citrus)
    4. iamking
    5. Play Sport
It’s decent, it’s a skin scent, it’s fresh. It’s tangerines. I am happy with it, I think it’ll be uplifting on sad days, for me and those around. But a small bottle will last me for years to come.

Fragrance smells ok but longevity a joke last on my skin for 10 mins max. I don’t think its worth the price tag. Definitely dosent suit the name. Don’t feel like a king when I wear it.

I love the cranberry and orange notes but HATE the longevity and sillage. This is literally the only fragrance that I have tried that hasn’t lasted or projected from my skin, it’s a disappointment because it smells very good.

  11. :

    5 out of 5

As much as I wanted to hate this, I must admit it’s a competently done fragrance, especially for a celebrity scent. It was a blind buy, purchased on the cheap and I was pleasantly surprised.
It strikes me as no more than slightly sweet, and a little fruity; I mostly get some indistinct citrus notes – lemon, lime, tangerine – take your pick, blackberry (cleaned up – without the cat piss note), a touch of tart cranberry, vetiver, and a vaguely woody base. Thankfully, I didn’t get any powder or aquatic notes (usually deal breakers for me, because of their overuse in the 90s), or any of the nose-piercing burn of the woody ambers so typical in men’s mainstream fragrances. I find myself reaching for this one quite a bit….turns out it’s pretty addictive.
It’s not a projection beast and remains pretty quiet – it won’t enter the room before you do; after the first 15-20 minutes, people will need to be darn close to you to smell it. In terms of longevity, it’s run its course, top to bottom, in about an hour but light traces seem to linger for about 3-4 hours. Considering what it costs, don’t be afraid to re-apply.
Adding: If this sort of thing is important to you, the bottle is incredibly solid and its heft feels great in the hand.

I tried this one on at Sears. Then, when going to the Sephora next door, I tried on the Tom Ford Private Blend aquatic line ($200+ fragrances) and I ended up liking I Am King even more.
I definitely enjoy this one. Fruity, tangy, that tangerine note really helps. A little bit of sweetness, but not too sweet. It’s not the most natural smelling but far less synthetic than I expected. It’s kind of like a Jardin/Amalfi type fragrance but within a $20-30 budget. Great value.

  13. :

A blind buy after reading all the positive comments, and it’s totally worth it. The notes are mostly my faves and they come together nicely! The opening is very bright but then tones down to mellow near-the-skin delight. A crisp, fresh, light scent for the summer days: A much much better replacement for CK One Summers in general.

Ryanmmas26’s review is spot on for this fragrance. And near word for word what I’d write.
One of my all time favorites, absolutely unique and mouthwatering fragrance. Both quite sweet and a little tart from the cranberry. AMAZING smell that has acceptable longevity,(and actually pretty good longevity for a citrus dominate scent if sprayed on clothes)and pretty poor projection after the first hour or two max.
Still, for the price this can be had for now and the amount of compliments it receives….it’s a no brainer IMHO.(just spray more often!lol) Treat yourself and pick up a bottle of this lovely fragrance before it disappears forever!:)
P.S.-I also owned E.C. Carte Blanche and it does indeed smell very close to I Am King. But even though it is supposed to be EDP strength, I didn’t notice any significant improvement in longevity or projection. Plus the Sean John is a little richer smelling, so I say stick with it.

Have you ever woke up bright and early, looked at the sun and said “today, I want to know what it feels like to be a citrus tree”? Well my friend let me tell you. Your dreams have finally come true. With this juice you will smell like somebody dropped a grenade in a grapefruit tree. Just imagine juice tree bark and leaves flying everywhere.
On a more serious note, I thought this fragrance was okay. Not amazing, but if you want a citrus powerhouse for all of 3 hours I say grab it.
    Thanks for Reading,

I first smelled this at a dept. store. I thought it was a burst of grapefruit, fruity almost can pass as a perfume. years later I see a 1.7 bottle at marshals for 15 bucks. great smell but fades and disappears in the hour. Sad for such a good smelling cologne.
Edit I wore this yesterday, only a few sprays on my neck. It lasted several hours. Definitely a must try for guys that like that sweet citrusy smell.

This is an AMAZING scent and ive smelled so many fragrances at this point so its hard to impress me right off the bat but this scent blew me away instantly…
This to me is fresh, fruity, aromatic and at the same time its very creamy, delicious, slightly gourmandish and is borderline unisex.(WOMEN LOVE THIS tho) Its also weird that it smells very different from a lot of fragrances but its in no way, shape or form extremely unique.
Its a great scent no doubt but performance is where its lacking. It projects great for the first hour but after that its pretty much a skin scent and only has about 2-5 hours longevity. Its really spotty.
All in all id rate this a 7 out of 10 ! Id give this scent a 9 if it at least had 4-6hrs or more of longevity but unfortunatly it doesnt which is a shame for such a great scent that gets a lot of compliments.
SIDENOTE: This would be a perfect cuddle scent or just for running errands

smells like Hawaiian punch Kool Aid… my nose can’t stop sniffing it. The cranberry is so fresh and sweet without being nauseating. I wish it had more longevity but it is cheap enough to reapply often.

To bad they’re discontinuing all of Sean john fragrances cause their all nice I am king is a great scent its perfect for the summer humid weather I haven’t had any longevity issues like others but I usually put on about 5 to 6 sprays its kind of strong for the first 40min to 1hour but then it settles down to a nice smooth clean fruity scent not a feminine fruity though its kind of like a KC reaction lacoste essential light airy scents very casual chill mode scent 8/10

This personally one of my fav scents but it def is the worst from a longevity point, if I spray three sprays on each arm, neck and clothes ill smell it after 8 hours. I would never pay retail for it but I don’t mind for $25 which is well worth it to me.

I agree..this frag is so FREAKIN WEAK. Need to re-spray every 2 hours. The first note is too strong for me. Make me dizzy when i spray it intensely.

Very poor longevity and versatility. I expected something special from fragrance called “I am king” but my alternative name for it will be “I am weak”.

  28. :

Very fruity. A lot of apple with sort of a sparkly feel. Longevity is the worst I have experienced, at least from testing it out. The scent is great, but it’s not worth the price.

  29. :

    3 out of 5

I Am King really is all about apple, red and green. It opens with a citric green apple note, which gradually reddens as it dries down, and joins a mossy-musky cassis note in the heart, before settling into a transparent sandalwood and musk base. But throughout the ninety minutes of its prominent lifespan on skin, expect I Am King to smell more like I Am Apple. I happen to like apple as a fragrance note, and while this is an awfully simplistic presentation, I find it to be pleasantly preferable to the overrated Unforgivable. If you really must endorse Mr. Diddy, please do so with this.

Sweet spike of citrus and semi-sourness (maybe thats what cranberry smells like) which adds some uniquness then calms into a soapy clean and powdery scent after 2-3 hours (makes sense with the sea notes) with still a hint of sharp fruit (lemon) Unique fragrance, great youthful scent, but for anyone doesnt mind something a touch fruity. Definitely unique. thumbs up for me.

i am king, WOW what a name..for me, this EDT is a citrusy/fruity male fragrance….i like this perfume…its open up with a fresh clean fruity smell and it last quite a while before it dries down to a citrusy trails!! definitely a day perfume and as an EDT, it last on me up to 5 hours..nice SEAN JOHN

Smells great right out of the bottle – problem is I don’t want to reapply every 20-30 minutes. This would be my favorite of all time if it had longevity and projection. I’ve gone through 2 bottles but won’t be replacing it. The only celebrity scent for me right now is Power by 50 Cent.

  33. :

Weak feminine cheap smelling fragrance. I was not impressed with it I got the bottle for free and gave it away to a woman friend.

For what it is, it does a nice job. I am not a Celebrity Fragrance person but this one is enjoyable. Does not project on my skin very well and the longevity is up to 4 hours on a warm day. I enjoy the fruity/citrus-ness of this cologne and non-offensive. Possibly overpriced for the quality of the juice.
    4/10 Overall

I don’t know if its just me or what but I have no problem getting 8+ hours out of this cologne. It’s also my favorite scent I have actually tried. I really want to give MI a shot once I get the cash for it. So until further notice this frat will be my sig scent because I love it and get compliments all over the place. More so than I did with ADG.

This one is quite similar with Unforgivable, but much weaker. I tried it on my wrist, at the moment i spray it smelled pretty good, as good as what I expect to get from Sean John. but it gone within 10 minutes. I’m pretty disappointed with this.

This is a frag that LIES to you. It smells AMAZINGLY fantastic the second you spray it, then it fades into a nothing..almost unpleasant smell. It does the exact opposite that what a frag is suppose to do. It fooled me into buying it. NO staying power, but the scent at first spay is heaven…for 2 seconds. After that…blech. If the scent would stay it would have been perfect. It goes from perfect to horrible in less than five minuets.

I just got this today. It does smell great and did notice it doesn’t have much projection. BUT This seems great in situations for cuddling or when your partner is laying on your chest.. I can see it giving off a very subtle and fresh relaxing aroma to your partner. Will not over power their nostrils. But again for me personally it really does have a great fragrance. I just wish it had more strength. Most definitely going to keep this in mind for close encounters. Shower and a quick spray than I go jump in the bed and lay with my girl. Go to sleep or…. 🙂

This is a fragrance with very good intentions, but in my opinion, it lacks power and it scent fades very quickly. Only in very hot environments it is possible to appreciate all its wonderful opening, which unfortunately fades quickly, to leave a scent without character.

when I got a whiff of i am king, i honestly did not know what to make of this fragrance because it seemed to smell flat and linear, and the smell was almost exclusively lemon with very little cranberry and other notes.
As for the fruity notes, there is no zesty, juicy, succulent fruit it is just a flat citrus smell that really does not jump out at me in any way, and it smells lacking so I cannot give a positive review for this fact.
In addition I see this is a total money grab because the test strip smells nice, but the basenotes are not as interessting and it ends up smelling very lacking and flat

  47. :

    3 out of 5

If you like fresh fruit and citric fragrances that make no qualms about it, Sean John’s I Am King is one not to miss. There are no floral notes to hide the citrus and no leather, suede or amber to overwhelm the fruity core of I Am King. This is pure produce aisle bliss.
The opening is incredibly well done, managing to balance the more acidic and traditional orange and tangerine with something purely North American, cranberry. No sign of alcohol and synthetics like so many of the dime a dozen drugstore celebrity fragrances, I Am King is perfectly at ease keeping company with higher end designer fragrances. It also seems to sizzle in warmer, more humid climates, reacting well to the heat and jumping off the skin a bit more vibrantly. All this makes I Am King quite original and a sure thing, right? Not necessarily.
The middle never really seems to develop much, with the slightest hint of cassis, but ultimately the opening sticks around and makes this quite linear and with so many citric sour notes causes a bit of a clash towards the ten minute mark that can quickly become cloying and unnerving if sniffed too frequently.
Possibly could have benefited from a spice like cardamom to dirty it up a bit or basil to create a tad more balance. As it is, I Am King is one best left for rotation duty, as it wears out its welcome quite quickly with its lack of movement or evolution and imbalance due to a misfire in the layering as the middle notes try to break the citric hegemony. The base notes are simply too weak as a whole to challenge the linear nature of I Am King, giving you a very sweet and sour essence that feels off balance after the first ten to fifteen minutes of application.
Longevity is generally quite low but does depend a good deal on climate, with a longer life in the heat. Anywhere from two to six hours is the general consensus after several wears. Projection is quite average but it doesn’t buckle into a skin scent as quickly as most in its genre. Two hours of decent projection can generally be expected.
Sean John’s I Am King was released to high acclaim given its original opening blast and 1950’s vintage like bottle design. Though somewhat overrated and dangerously close to overtly celebrating its sour harshness, this is a great summer scent to wear every once (its too linear to be a signature scent) in awhile and merits at least a sniff. Puff Daddy may be a very weak lyricist and rapper, but he is a visionary opportunist who knows how to market himself and push products without seeming classless and blatantly opportunistic for the sake of money itself. I Am King is a good representation of his vision if not a somewhat misleading self-portrait of a man deftly skilled in the art of self-presentation.

I seem to be very sensitive to newer fragrances, especially aquatic ones, so I was worried that this one might nauseate me. Fortunately, it’s not bad at all. Keep in mind that Del Mar Marbella Edition Baldessarini made me start to feel ill, as a point of reference, as did Black XS (had to wash them off quickly). Also, I don’t know much of anything about this guy (P. Diddy, Puff, Puffy, Puff Daddy, Sean John, Sean Combs, etc./whatever), so that was not a consideration. However, as inoffensive and somewhat pleasant as this is, it seems to be an indicator that I don’t like strong fruit notes in fragrances, at least certain fruit notes. I recently acquired a little Zara Gold and liked that (strong pineapple note), but I still need to wear it again to know how much, and whether it is rotation worthy. I didn’t have any longevity issue but the projection (“sillage”) loses quite a bit of intensity over time. What’s interesting is that there is a middle phase to this fragrance that seems rather generic, but then comes another phase that is quite nice. Clearly, the fragrance aficionado is not likely to think much of this, but if you want something that can work for many occasions, this is one to consider (price aside, which I haven’t researched).

I think this fragrence is one f the most misunderstood cologne’s on the market today. First of all the name is not an ego boost to Mr. Combs (he’s got better reasons to do that than a damn fragrance), it’s title is meant to inspire the feeling of being a king in the man who wear’s it. Like Clinique Happy does for women. Second is that although this fragrance is titled “I am King” almost no one in your kingdom will notice it but you. It is extremely light and stays very close to the skin. Mr. Combs says this fragrence is not meant for every one in the room to smell just the one closest to you. I use it when I know me and my lady are going to be very close. Sharing a blanket at an outdoor event, or a secluded table in a resturant. It smells fantastic a crisp fruity/tangy sent that stays the same from start to finish. It is different fragrence with a different approach so if you are trying to get the attention of the whole room this is not for you.

KING? Are you joking? This one is a typical summer scent for 14-17 year old guys. It is sweet and fruity in the way of Clinique Happy – a splash of sugary oranges and tangerines. A pleasant fragrance, but not for such price (it smells cheap) and nor for such marketing. The longevity is below average.

  53. :

    3 out of 5

I Am King is too fruity sweet. Intensely sweet. It’s not for me.

  54. :

    3 out of 5

Wow!! I love this stuff! This will definitely be one of my signature summer scents this year. This is one of the best fruity fragrances I’ve ever tried. The tangerine and cranberry together create an intoxicating tart & persistent fruity experience. I also love the fact that it stays pretty linear & holds those same intense fruity top notes all the way through the life of the scent. (I tend to love topnotes & scents that don’t change too much in the dry down). The biggest complaint I’ve seen with I Am King is longevity. It’s definitely not a super long-lasting scent, but I would say it’s about average for a summer fragrance. (also, I have very dry skin & nothing lasts long on me, so I always spray my scents on my clothes. If you do that, then longevity is much better & you can hold those topnotes longer).
Anyway, I definitely recommend I Am King for anyone looking for a unique, super fruity summer scent. It’s one of my favorites (right up there with ADG, Cool Water, & Live Jazz), and even though it’s pricey; this one is worth it to me. I can see why this won an award the year it was released. Good job Diddy!

Very weak, too close to the skin.
    No projection for me.
Starts fruity, a lil citrusy but not bad, but doesnt really dry down, just fades away.

I think that this should be marketed as a unisex fragrance. It is very fresh, and suitable for women just as much as men. The opening is a bit fruity, and dries to a clean lemon cedar, without sharpness.
I’ve heard many women say that if their men doesn’t want to wear it, THEY will!
I would totally buy a bottle of this for myself.

Ok, I hate P-Diddy and Rap. But i tried this fragrance at the store a few times now and must say it smells DIVINE! Might buy this when the prices come down a bit.

First impression; I Am King is not a manly scent. Instead, its fruity and less serious than anything else from SJ. Cranberry is easily detected; making the scent tarty fruity and sweet. Because of the cranberry, it reminds me of Kool-Aid or Ocean Spray juice drink. I can smell salt which helped the scent from becoming too sweet, and as it dried down into something bit more masculine scent; nice and plasticky. I think woman can easily enjoy this scent as much as man. Too bad I must say its name is a bit obnoxious.

Lovely citrus opening – reminds me of grapefruit though that’s not one of the listed notes. Drydown seems very similar to Polo Black and as everyone else has mentioned, longevity isn’t great. Nice but nothing special.

The cranberry in this makes I AM KING a unique fragrance. Im not going to comment on longevity b/c everybody has their own reaction to any fragrance, but this is a good buy. A pricy cologne but this cranberry just rides out for hours on end with a lush fruity freshness. If you want unique pay the price b/c this is like no other, hence the unclassified olfactive grouping above. Great for spring, better for summer day & night.

Really nice and refreshing scent that reminds me of sparkling orange juice. BUT diddy must think he works for Creed bc this shiz is wayyy overpriced for a mediocre celebrity scent.

I love it, the drydown is remarkable, but like everyones stated, it doesnt last long.
I usually apply 3-4 sprays on the neck. Too expensive though.

Well, I saw loads of this frag ads, expecting something macho scent, but when I tested it, it smell just like a pack of fresh mint with extra fruity chewing gum scent! Very disappointing and it smell cheap and very feminine.
    Update:
To be fair, I give it a second try… and I’ve got same result, boring minty fresh scent that only last 2 hours on me. On paper, it smell 90% alike the Hugo Boss Pure minus the fruity scent. Guys, ads may trick you, your nose won’t!

This one starts with a really zesty sherbety blast, and to me is somewhat like pink grapefruit (even though that is not one of the listed notes). Most likely the combination of cranberry and the orange and lemon notes gives this effect.
The initial citric sharpness passes, but the fruitiness lasts in a tamer manner throughout the life of the fragrance. There are woody notes in the background, but these are held in check by the citrus.
I quite like the fragrance, but not enough to buy it.

Do not buy this product without putting it on your skin first. You might get very dissapointed, especially for the price. I love unforgiveable but this one is very similar to ANY fruity acquatic fragrance, and not citrus at all… tends to be very sweet like mango or something like that.

First of all, i do not think a king would smell like this… lol… but it is a great scent. Its something new, modern, and classy.
It is fruity but not too fruity. It holds up well on the masculine part. The top notes are a nice blend of mild citruses with a nice woody dry down. I do like how this isn’t your typical or ordinary fragrance. It’s such a relaxed scent that isn’t overpowering or offensive. I would wear this for any occasion.
I also agree on it smelling like Unforgivable but i wasnt very fond of Unforgivable. This is more smooth to my nose.
The longtivity is outstanding. I’ll spray it in the morning before work and a would still get nice breezes of it late in the evening.

Smell exactly like rotten fruit from beginning to end. Start out really strong and annoying then fade away quickly.

I REALLY LOVE this scent! This might have to be my next cologne! The bottle isn’t all that, but the Juice smells sooooooooooooo good! It’s very fruity, but in a masculine way. This is what I imagine P.Diddy smelling like

i was kinda disappointed in this one. i really enjoyed unforgivable and unforgivable black but this one just doesnt cut it. it smells like any other fruity aquatic mens fragrance. if anything its fruitier and can easily be wore by a women. its boring and has nothing special to it. the bottle is quite hideous as well. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! ushers ur is much much better!
