Z-14 is one of the best men’s scents ever. It smells like a really cute guy wearing his sister’s Aliage and chewing Big Red cinnamon gum. Clean but spicey. Woody but not hamster cage or oud. Z-14 just gets it right. Smells excellent on my husband.

I own the old formula which I can compare to Allure Homme Sport Cologne, although this fragrance is more appropriate for fall. I’m not a fan of a lot of the 70’s fragrances because some contain too much musk. In fact, Musk for Men was the most popular fragrance during the 1970’s. I like Halston Z-14 because of the memories, and it has sentimental value to me. Finally, it wasn’t overloaded with musk.
Fast forward to earlier this week when I visited TJ Maxx. WOW, Halston has reformulated this fragrance to an even better fragrance which cinnamon dominates. I know there are a lot of complaints in the fragrance community, but for me it’s a very welcome addition, and makes this fragrance appropriate for today. Many other fragrances have made this transition, and for me I can honestly say that I haven’t found one that has disappointed me. Anyway, here are my thoughts in video form. youtu.be/Rw6PKhljARE

Just let that initial burst of lemon, dash of lime, evap for a bit and the rest comes out, a classic. There is a woodsy energy there. For the price and reputation, don’t think twice about adding this to your collection. I have to say, a great backyard after work scent.

This was a blind buy for me together with another four fragrances from 1970’ish and one from the 1930’s, all from a reputable supplier. I obviously either bought a new formulation or a dud. I say this because having now read the reviews on Z14 I am unable to reconcile what has been said with my purchase of the EdC. I recognize none of the notes mentioned and get an overwhelming wet, paper pulp scent from start to finish except that it tones down a little as time passes. Very disappointed to be honest. It is not unpleasant, just not inspiring in the least. Perhaps I should seek out a vintage bottle to see why there are so very many positive comments.

I will be the first to admit, my memory is not how it used to be. Therefore all I can say is that the “Vintage Z-14” back in the day was the “Cats Tail” it next to “Polo Green” was pure male sensuality. I mean the women were all over it and some not expected guys as well. TMI, sorry. Anyways the new version for a fact I know is not what the old once was, however with time it has grown on me to the point that I take off the cap to smell it several times per day. Yes the citrus is a lemon type smell, a plesantvery tolerable lemon smell not a gagging type of lemon smell and then there are notes, medium notes of spice that kind of warms up to me as it stays on my skin. Mind you I have always thought that what I smell is totally different to what someone else might think of a fragrance and how it smells. All I can say is for those wishing to purchase the newer scent of Z-14, “Do It”, allow time to warm up to the fragrance, I couldn’t stand the smell when I first bought the re-form, but now, And I mean this very minute I can’t wait until Fall arrives here in the Midwest. The new re-form will grow on you in a very good way. Like I said the Lemon dominates the frag but then you get your notes of fresh spice which seems to keep morphing into different types and levels of spice. To me there is nothing offensive with this frag. I feel it can be comfortably worn in the office, or any other setting. Beware, when applying it, it to me seemed that I didn’t spray enough where I later found that I sprayed too much. For me one direct spray on the chest / neck, and a light one on the upper back / neck. The lasting power of this is as above in the chart long lasting, but definitely something that doesn’t haunt you where you wish you would have made a different decision of a particular scent for that day. I like it but as stated compared to the original there is no comparison. Just to say again this is only my opinion, I have grown to really like it and will continue to wear it. Thanks for reading.

A sensation of unmitigated trepidation rises up through my greasy gizzards, as I must proclaim that this redolence is grimly devoid of any sort of benign cordiality.

How to make faux Z-14: Decant 10ml EA version and add oakmoss absolut (3 drops), real bergamot (not the bergaptene-free variety, 7 drops), labdanum (2 drops) and Suederal (trace amount!). Are these extra ingredients expensive? You betcha! Luxury often has a price.

To me this (the original 1970’s iteration) is what Tom Ford was paying homage to with his Italian Cypress. The reformulation is a “LOW RES PROXY” version of the original and for that matter TF Italian Cypress. But since IC has been discontinued and the original Z-14 is lost in the sands of time…the new formulation is as close as we will get, today. The resolution is crude, considering the lower quality ingredients and adjustments for allergenes. But it is still a unique, classy, masculine, timeless scent. There is nothing else quite like it on the market today. With the reformulation, your skin type plays a major factor in how well it works for you. It seems the cheaper ingredients work with far more limited skin types. Fortunately on my skin it smells amazing and I get tons of compliments with it. Hope it’s the same for you.
    ORIGINAL 1970’s vintage Z-14: 10/10
Current Reformulation: 8/10 but factoring in the price, this is a steal!
It is very masculine, unique and classy. Don’t expect it to smell like what is trending today (but also not dated). If you want to make a subtle (good smelling statement) and a nod back to a different era of cool…this is the frag. It doesn’t smell 70’s, it just smells good. Also, like Tom Ford’s frags it tends to work with a more manly/mature body chemistry. I’d recommend 25-30+.
If you can’t afford the discontinued Tom Ford Italian Cypress, or find a vintage bottle of this. Get the reformulation. Don’t believe the “hate”. No it’s not as good as the original (for that get TF IC), or blended as well, with high quality ingredients. But it still smells niche, expensive and amazing. Perfect fall/winter fragrance. I hope they never discontinue it. Oh, and FYI I wasn’t around in the 70’s…too young for that. So I’m judging the frag off my experiences of frags today…including those of Tom Ford (of which I’m a huge fan).

I recently bought a bottle of the ORIGINAL formula off of Ebay. Man, was I shocked. Never smelled anything like it and it was soooo good! I mean for real. This stuff would be classified as “niche” today by Jeremy Fragrance himself. The smell is exquisite, luxurious, fabulous, incredible. No, I am not looking to resell it either. That said, I have yet to wear it. But I have noticed that there are 3 distinct manufacturers; Halston, French Fragrances and EA Fragrance(Elizabeth Arden). Halston Fragrances Inc starts out with an incredible musky, amber, incense vanilla with a light-powdery residue. The dry-down is far far better almost like a cognac that dried on a glass, exceptional smell. I am only telling you the scent coming from the used bottle that I have and its still 96% full of a 3.9oz bottle. The juice is darker which may be due to the bottle, not sure. It has a twist spray and the sprayer comes out; pump spray action. 502A is the 4-digit batch code. I have ordered a 2.5oz bottle of the French Frag, but it has not yet arrived. It will be interesting to see if there’s any similarities. I doubt it! Now the EA Fragrance is very different. It’s lighter in color and smell, but it still smells very good. Batch code is 7KR4 I believe. It smells of cinnamon-heavy, some vanilla and is a little reminiscent of the original, but not at all the same. My guess is that when Halston left his company, the vultures came in and budgeted the place and quality, right out of the bottle. you know how “corporate” works. Anyway, I highly recommend buying a bottle. It still smells good and is worth the money. The EA Frag can be found at almost ant TJ Maxx, but you have to be on the lookout for it! Happy scenting…

I have noticed the cinnamon in my bottle (produced 2014) has mellowed out a good bit in the 1.5 years (ish) since I bought it. The heavy cinnamon wasn’t an issue with me, but I think the juice smells far better now that it did when purchased.

I’ve heard people say too much of anything is not good for you, baby, but I don’t know about that. I wear this more more more. How do I like it? More more more. That’s the way uh huh, uh huh, I like it, uh huh uh huh

Classic citrus fougere powerhouse. I was expecting more woods and spices but they’re pretty subtle here. This is more of a citrus over a complex, somewhat soapy base. Very classic eau de cologne in structure, with it’s refreshing citrus and herbs, plus some elegance from the chypre foundation. A solid, confident, manly fragrance… way too manly for a woman to carry off, unfortunately. It’s a really great fragrance though, and a favorite for good reason. Sexy, confident man.

  15. :

What can I say? loved it then and love it now. a great scent with a nice, masculine drydown full of woods and spice. The cinnamon CAN be a little overpowering, but only if you put your nose right up to the scent. in the sillage, it is just right. The only issue I have with the newer version is that it doesn’t seem to last as long on me. My memory could be fading, but I remember this as being a beast in sillage and longevity. Not so much now.

  16. :

Initial note is familiar, reminiscent to Boucheron pour Homme for about 5-10 minutes. Then cinnamon note takes over, still with the trails of citrus at the background…minutes more harmony of leather, amber and woody notes, really uplifting your mood. It is not harsh, even though a bit loud at the opening. Got compliments from my office colleagues, minus only…it is hard to find it here.

  17. :

    4 out of 5

Well now. The reviews for this are so varied. The history of this is interesting. So, how could one not be tempted to pick up a very inexpensive bottle when spotted on the discounter shelf?
For me, I agree the cinnamon is dominant here. And I agree this smells a touch synthetic. Less is definitely best with this one. In all honesty, I think one spray of this is sufficient. That is not to say that this is heavy nor overpowering (although I’m sure it could be if oversprayed), but just that the cinnamon can feel like it is clobbering you over the head, otherwise. But hey, you might like heavy cinnamon! But also on that note, you might not pick up the cinnamon like some of us do. So..Having said that, I think this is one of those fragrances that can smell like 5 different scents on 5 different people; hence the varied reviews.
This is not a dislike for me, but it is certainly not one I or my guy will be reaching for often (I am a girl who digs men’s frag’s, and me or my man both will wear this on occasion). I do love the shape and feel of the bottle. But as for really digging the scent itself, the jury is still out for us… As always, YMMV.

You could be forgiven for dismissing this as an inferior, “cheap” fragrance for its abundance on the shelves at Marshall’s.
You could also be forgiven for forgetting – or not even knowing about – this 1970’s classic whose glory days are decades behind.
However, you’d be remiss for not risking a $12 blind buy and missing out on the absolute divinity of this one – and, yes, I’m talking about the current reformulation. It’s smoother now; less heavy than its hairy-chested ancestor. To my nose, it smells like a night-time cousin of Dior’s Eau Sauvage. Yes, it’s that good. Tehcnically, it’s a cologne, but Halston found a way to make this cologne shine like an EDP.
I once heard a rabbi claim that God will hold us accountable for the joys we intentionally bypass in this life. For me, Z-14 is one of those joys, and I plan to enjoy as much of it as I possibly can 🙂

  19. :

Just far too much cinnamon, which is a shame because the performance of this fragrance is magnificent

  20. :

    3 out of 5

Halston is clearly a less well-known name in the UK, but alas the joys of these boards is easy to hunt out scents that you’ve never heard of. Z-14 is one such scent, as is the designer house of Halston.
Not wanting another cypress/chypre, I reluctantly tried the current version. Let’s just say the connections to big red gum are totally justified. Cinnamon in a bottle. You might be forgiven for wanting to dust your rice pudding with it!
Vintage on the other hand, even something I would class as semi-vintage, is clearly on another level. Woody, resinous, potent and long-lasting (and yes, with some cinnamon in there – but not a truck load), this is another one of those scents that any chypre lover should vie to try at least once in their life time. It’s hard to believe that this scent is so affordable. Two sprays are enough to last a whole working day. Projection is quite strong. Wearers should expect their clothes to smell of the mossy accord for days later.

Bought a old school mini frag gift set. Z 14 was one of 4 others. My dad wore this. I wore this as a kid not even knowing i was wearing a masterpiece. Its old school but not dated at all. I just found a bottle for $20. It smells like it should cost $200. Tom Ford could easily rebottle this as a private blend

I use to love this stuff, it was my cold weather cologne in my younger days. I picked up a bottle about a year ago, something has changed, it does not smell the same. I remember it having a warm cinnamon basenote, but the last bottle had a horrible smell of almost like a cleaning chemical. I do not care for this anymore.

Isn’t it funny how the “cinnamon overload” is largely hated in the new Z-14 and yet the “ambroxan overload” is beloved by so many in Sauvage? To me the ambroxan in Sauvage makes it feel like a chemical factory had a major containment issue, whereas the cinnamon in Z-14 is not like what you smell when you smell some ground cinnamon (which I use every day!). So, if you enjoy cinnamon and like the “overload” idea, such as with Sauvage, why would you dislike Z-14? It’s not the exact same cinnamon, because it has a rather unique textured quality, which makes it more interesting, for goodness sake!

Ever walk into JoAnn Fabrics in the fall and smell the piles of pine cones in the red bags with the fake cinnamon on them that mysteriously has a scent half-life of months? That’s mostly what you will be getting here in sickening doses.
I’m the type of person that thinks that there’s a special place in hell for restaurants that give out fake cinnamon mints in the shape of after dinner peppermints. This is exactly that cinnamon.
I bought the last of the legacy formulation with real oakmoss in it from Marshalls / Tj Maxx for $10. It was not worth that much to me. I 100% disliked this in both quality and character.

The spice dries down to a nice scent. The drydown was always the main attraction for me. This was the cologne that taught me about the different stages of opening, middle, and drydown. Each was distinct. I cared little for the opening or middle, but the drydown taught me to love spicy frags.

“It’s a formidable scent… It stings the nostrils. In a good way.”
I do love me some Z-14 on cooler days or today when it’s cold and snowy. I wouldn’t ever recommend wearing this on a warmer day and I would limit your sprays to two or three at most. I think everyone should have a bottle of Z-14 and 1-12 in their collection/rotation. Great fragrances!!

This is a classic fragrance. Works great on my skin, cypress and vetiver , with lemon and bergamot. Drying down to a great tonka cinnamon vibe. Always worn in cooler weather, never tried it as a summer fragrance.
    Solid 8-10 for me.

i was looking forward to getting an intense cypress, i pretty much just got fast food bathroom liquid soap. original quorum does a similar thing for a similar price, just with a bit more spice/smoke/tobacco, but smells infinitely better. just goes to show what a difference quality of synthetics and blend makes; im sure they both smelled amazing in their heyday but for the modern formulation, i’d skip it for any of the better reformulated 70’s style scents.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

I’ve worn this fragrance off and on through the years ever since it’s introduction in the 70’s. It was truly a ground breaking scent when it came out, and it’s still unique. I’ve probably owned every remixed version that’s come out, and every reiteration has something of the original, something special at it’s core.
But having said that, i gotta add that it’s been a long, slow downhill slide in consistency. Especially in the opening and heart. Silage and longevity have also declined over the years. When you buy a bottle today you’re never really sure what you’re getting until you get it home and spray it on. I’m afraid it’s kind of a crap shoot now, but sometimes it’s still worth the gamble.
All the good things people are saying are true. It’s just unfortunate that some of the negatives have also become evident over the years.

  35. :

    4 out of 5

My bottle is of a 2004 batch. It’s simply a burst of lemon that hangs on through the green dried herbs, right into the mossy base. When comparing it to other oakmoss titans, like Polo and Quorum, Z-14 is very lite and polite. However, it does smell very unusual when comparing it to what’s on the market today. It’s not sweet at all. Very tart, green and dry.

  36. :

    4 out of 5

The opening is cinnamon overdrive, to the point of a sharpness that is almost industrial. This is accompanied by a sourish citric note, and some soapy remnants. This isn’t the metrosexual soft approach too many frags are taking today, but a shameless punch that belongs in a time when things were less well-adjusted than they are now.
The atomiser is utter shite, which makes it kinda difficult to even say what a spray is. But, as a rule, even with the lame squirt that thing produces, be careful. Two or three, tops. Otherwise… The slow dry-down of Z14 is another speciality. This fragrance actually doesn’t get any softer, but just changes its character. The cinnamon blast dies away and is replaced with a faintly woodsy, rather harsh base. The finale is benzoin-musk-oakmoss, the woodsy elements are toned down.
This is a real love-it-or-hate-it thing. I’ve heard people compare the smell of the final stage (or the next morning) to that of cat piss, which is probably not exactly a compliment getter if your overall scent features this as an element 😀 There is definitely something no-bullshit, old-fashioned, animalistic to Z14. Not one you want to use to blend in.

This thread conjures up memories from such a memorable Time period of my life. The infamous Z-14 and signature scent of my youth during the “Reagan” years. I was fortunate enough to experience this Masculine 80s powerhouse when it still contained Oakmoss and I went thru bottles of this. This was the Quintessential cologne of choice worn by the Guido’s (was well respected and a huge compliment to be called this from females of the 80s) from the Catskills of New York when freestyle music was in its heyday and Iroc Z camaros graced the streets in all their glory. Indeed, Z-14 was a truly Grandiose scent in an Unforgettable era. Projection and silage are above average and the smell is very masculine but non-offensive. I have tried the newer EA fragrances versions of this juice that do not contain oakmoss and they are way too dominated by cinnamon and not the same Z-14 smell or lasting power that I fondly remember. However, if you can find this cologne with Oakmoss or at least Treemoss listed as an ingredient (as they can be found in stores and places on the web) buy it and enjoy this timeless scent to the fullest!

Never having had the chance to smell this scent, along with many others, pre-reformulation, is a blessing. I can judge the scent on its own merits, without longing for what it once was. And Halston is a damn solid fragrance. Woody cinnamon, with a bright lemony opening. Definitely a “dad” scent, best applied when dressed in a tweed suit.

So I’ve decided to go on a drugstore fragrance tour. Any time I go to the drugstore, I will sample a different “old school” cologne on my forearm. Z-14 was my most recent spray. The opening hits you with a blast of cypress and the note seems to dominate all the way to the end. Yes, I got some spices like cinnamon and coriander, even a bit of leather and vetiver. But the cypress really takes over and reminds me of Christmas season. The projection and longevity is above average in my opinion. I kept getting more wafts of this than my scent of the day that I was wearing. It makes me question why all these other modern fragrances can’t seem to perform as good as this. Overall, I think it’s definitely unique and smells masculine, but it’s just too seasonal for my liking. It’s not my drugstore winner…so far.

This is a new acquaintance for me and I found it only after researching Tom Ford’s Italian Cypress which I am very fond of. Admittedly, I was somewhat put off by the many negative reviews of the reformulated version vis á vis the 1976 original. But in the end the very modest price taunted me into a blind buy. Before going into the specifics, just let me share that this is one of the more difficult scents I have ever “deciphered”. There is a lot going on and much of it is complex and subtle (though the smell certainly isn’t weak), if a scent can be thought of as esoteric, Z-14 fits the bill.
To me, Z-14 opens with cypress and a blast of citrus but maybe not specifically bergamot as the pyramid indicates. What I pick up is more of a bitter-sweet citrus, almost like the oil in the peel of almost over-ripe clementines/oranges. Might be the cinnamon and basil throwing me off a bit though. The citrus in the top notes lingers somewhat longer than what I am used to but no shame in that. The bitterness has a slight medicinal quality, especially when the dry down starts.
    * Edit. The citrus, I knew the citrus reminded me of something and today I realized that it is quite similar to the opening in Dior’s Eau Sauvage! Same kind of bitterness.
The dry-down reveals cedar and leather, but still with that ever so slightly bitter accord. Cinnamon, of course, is also present and I get a bit of clove and coriander. In the transition from top notes to heart and base notes I have felt some faint whiffs of burnt rubber or maybe a smokey gunpowder. It is very transient and fleeting and could possibly be attributed to the vetiver. As the scent continues to progress the cypress and leather lingers while amber notes marry with soapy musk and tonka to close the deal.
All in all, it is a very complex and, I’d say, fairly unique spicy scent. It does have something of a “powerhouse” oomph to it but not at all like the old masters. It certainly does remind me of Italian Cypress but IC is more organic and well balanced to me. Z-14 is a bit rougher around the edges, but not necessarily in a bad way. I wore IC a few days ago and Z-14 the day after and asked my wife to smell both shirts. She’s not a fraghead by any means but she said they were very similar on the fabric. Will at some point try to find a vintage as well to compare with.

Dry/wet, 70s bottle, a seventies classic. Had a bottle that if you rubbed it, a genie would appear and grant three wishes. Upon first application I wished I hadn’t sprayed so much, the genie blurted out “so let it be done!” Sillage reduction. Before going out that night I remember wishing I hadn’t eaten beans earlier, “so let it be done!” Gas reduction. Later talking to a doll face I was wishing I had a mint for my breath. I realized I used up all three wishes. I’m sure there’s a vintage un rubbed bottle I can find somewhere like eBay. If you happen to pick this one up don’t rub it in public people frown on that.

aromatic juniper like at first, and a little spicy and almost earthy, then cinnamon BOMB in the drydown. like smelling a cinnamon jar. If you really like cinnamon, this might be your holy grail.
I can see the similarity in themes between this and Quorum and Yatagan by the same perfumer. Quorum is much more aromatic piney leathery tobacco smelling – pine and tobacco and grapefruit and sandalwood etc. Yatagan is the highest quality of the three, and is very dry very earthy dusty with castorem. Z-14 is kinda earthy in a way, but the least of the three. They all have the earthy theme though. but Z-14 goes the cinnamon direction with juniper berries, so it’s definitely more spicy, less earthy.

It’s Autumn here now in New England so it’s Z-14 time. To me this cologne is “Fall in a Bottle” especially in cooler Northeast this time of year… the foliage is just starting, cool crisp mornings, pumpkins, harvest, hay rides, apple pie, and all the goodness of Fall. Halston Z-14 is just perfect for this time of year. I have the latest formulation and never tried the vintage. But those reviewers that are calling this new release “unwearable” and a cinnamon bomb don’t have the batch I must have because this is just an amazing fragrance. Excellent longevity and sillage, and superb drydown. I don’t detect too much cinnamon like others claim here. I suspect there must be different batches out there of the latest formulation because the one I have is everything I like in a autumn fragrance. I don’t have the best of noses for detecting notes, but I detect some wood, spice, apple tobacco, touch of cinnamon, and something a little musky and warm spicey. Can’t stop smelling my wrist. I can see why this has been around since the 1970’s. I must of got lucky with my batch because this is wonderful… tons of compliments, and the wife loves it on me. IMO too masculine for a woman.

Z14 is one of the first colognes I ever wore and I recently discovered that I still have small bottle from back in the 1990s. It has been hiding in the closets of my residences for decades. I was delighted to pull this out and try it again, now that I have amassed a rather large collection of fragrances, and see if I still liked it. And the answer is a resounding YES! This is a great scent IMO!
Z14 is a dry spicy leathery and oakmoss combination. A classic and timeless old school masculine fragrance that is very much a mature scent, so if you are under 30 you probably wont like this one too much. Although I was much younger that 30 the first time I wore it, so your mileage may vary.
I have not tried the newer formulation and based on the reviews of it here, I don’t think I will.
Bottom line: IF you enjoy classic masculine scents and can find an older formulation, you should try this one.

Halston Z-14 is a great fragrance. I may have an older batch it seems. It is oakmoss, cinnamon, and cypress. It smells really good and I get about 8-10 hours out of it. It projects very well. Definitely get compliments with this one too. This is a classic fragrance for me, and I think it stands the test of time.

I have always liked Z-14… ON SOMEONE ELSE.
It’s an odd duck, and I can’t deny that it is an attention grabber. But, to me it is best coming from someone else’s sillage trail.
Honest.. I really do enjoy it from a distance, but I have never really enjoyed wearing it, and part of my enjoyment in wearing a scent is for my own personal satisfaction, not only for those around me… even better when the two can collide.

The cheap drugstore iteration is actually pretty damn amazing. A very distinguished nostalgia scent with an air of dignity and masculine mystery.
Stick with the bottle you buy at CVS or Walgreens. Never buy a fragrance called “vintage” on Ebay.

The original vintage version of Z-14 made by Halston in New York in the 70s is a phenomenal fragrance, a full blown 10/10. It also started this whole trend of fragrance that today seems common and outdated. At the time when it came out it was considered very original. I haven’t smelled the EA or French Fragrances version, only the original and the current bargain version and the difference is so great I wouldn’t even know where to begin. But if you like uber masculine stuff like Italian Cypress or the original Polo, the original formula is a must seek out. It isn’t for the light hearted, Z-14 is a powerhouse masculine full of very potent cypress and oakmoss. It’s very green and spicy and has this dirty quality to it. Extremely sexy fragrance on the right man. But clearly wouldn’t work on everyone. It’s clearly “old school” now. It’s a remarkable fragrance that really demonstrates how much standard designer fragrances have changed. This is deep, rich, rough yet rounded, full bodied and what we consider top of the line niche today. But don’t think that stuff at TJ Maxx is going to be the same. It isn’t. The original is remarkable fragrance making.
Edit: I have tried 3 different reformulations and none are even remotely like the original from the 70s. They smell cheap and highly synthetic. I can’t stress enough how superior the original version is. The good one only HALSTON on the bottom label. Not distributed by any other company. If you see Halston only, grab it.
