Vetiver & oakmoss based fragrance.
More like the usual “poor homme” labelled fragrance with dirty vetiver, herbal oakmoss, grapefruit, coriander, patchouli, and musk. I can’t detect any narcissus, or leather! The jasmines, & lily of the valley shows up later but bits with some amber.
I had the chance to purchase this with a grand incredible price but thank GOD I didn’t do so, its overly common and wasn’t that incredible as I thought it were. Nope.

I was given a splash bottle of this in high school and used it sparingly, then went off to college and left it at home. Flash forward more than twenty years later and I find the bottle in a drawer at my mom’s house – right where I left it next to my David Bowie scrapbook – and literally shrieked with delight. It was kept dry and cool and is just as lovely as it was in 1987. I now dole it out like unicorn tears and pray it lasts at least another few years. So much love for this warm, embracing fragrance.
IWdenna – :
The smell is so masculin and “ACTIVE”.. if you are a man you can wear it and no one will notice. If you say “they just don’t make em like this anymore..” I would say probably because of the QUALITY of the ingredients.. and maybe it was the trend from 70’s-80’s that women refused sweet perfumes and loved to show and act as independent and “actively tough” .. but now they are relaxed in the fact that it is possible to be independent, working woman, leading an executive job and be themselves…
This perfume reminds me of YSL Pour Homme.

I’m willing to pay for Gucci 3 but I am so hesitant because of “greed” of people putting alcohol in it or mixing a similar batch & re-pkg. How can you be sure its the Real thing?
A post stated that it smelled stale & not like she remembered.
Any suggestions besides reading the feedbacks?
Back in the day there was store that carried hard to find colognes- perfumes.
Thanks for any guidance

Why, oh why they don’t create scents like this anymore?
This is the perfume I deeply miss, probably forever. I bought it when I was 20 years old in the late 80’s. Time filled with joy, youth, beauty, friends, colourful fashion, disco music and everything seemed to be possible.
I love the line Bstefcorbin wrote: “I used to spray this with abandon! Never thinking that the party would end!”
Everytime I wore this scent I got masses of compliments and life felt like a never ending party.
Gucci No 3 is a gorgeous perfume. Rich, elegant, sophisticated, uptown girl kinda scent. This turned heads I can tell, and boy it lasted unbelievably well on your skin or clothes.
I’ve been wondering would it be worth it to buy a vintage bottle. Would it feel the same as then, nearly 30 years ago? Surely it isn’t a youth potion and I don’t get any younger but to get the feeling of that great decade of 80’s. Who wouldn’t pay anything to get some of those times back…
SFEric – :
I definitely get the similarity with Nobile, released a few years later. This is more floral which I expected. Not a bad thing.
I got a few bottles of this cheaply to on-sell to offset the cost of my other fragrances, but now I’ve tried it I’m going to have some difficulty letting them go. Bother!
Oceacyalectub – :
In the category of “Wow, they just don’t make ’em like that anymore” comes this incredible floral chypre. Aldehydes, narcissus, and oakmoss combine to make a potent fragrance that is intense, woody, and mysterious. Leather, coriander and orris are up next, to set a complex and refined base, with amber, patchouli, musk, and sundry softer florals lurking just beneath. Simply fabulous. Such a surprise in the unassuming bottle!
Update: As I was writing this review, someone walked behind me and said “Oh wow, what is that cool, earthy smell? Like essential oils or woods. Smells so good!”

I used to spray this with abandon! Never thinking that the party would end!
I still have my navy leather Paloma Picasso XOXO belt from those days; and thanks to my old pal Cindy; I have this again!
To me it smells like the inside of an Italian leather purse, wafting cool refrigerated air ~ a pack of assorted Nat Sherman’s; Chanel lipstick and powder compact; fruit flavored trident and a little something from Pablo Escobar.

I’m wearing today this incredible perfume and had to write about it. I really think it is one of the most perfect autumn perfumes I’ve come across. When I smell it, it makes me long for countryside walks, in woolen jumpers and coats, and leather boots of course. Tweed and leather, those good old things.
Green chypre, full of oakmoss, narcissus, leather, rubbery tuberose and a hint of dense red rose. Aldehydes give a sparkling effect to it, but they are under control. So the result is creamy, green, animalic, autumnal but still shiny.
Very chic and uncommon to today’s commonplace for scents. Strong and long lasting too. Worths every cent of the edt, I own too a perfume extrait which is even better, to cry for actually. Why next generations have to be punished not to ever smell it, I will never understand.
Pure magic.
web4ik – :
It’s weird, but the opening accord, aldehydes, orris, and narcissus, somehow also has a brief period where they combine to smell like clover honey on my skin…
In the heart, I get wonderfully oily narcissus, a touch of rose, a touch of leather, and a surprisingly soft white musk (soapy) note. The next morning, the honey scent remains, cause for early morning smiles!
Mostly a skin scent on me, this is lovely, but not unique, and given the price I prefer it’s smell-alikes. Scherrer 2 hits that honey note, with greater sillage. On my skin, Givenchy III’s heart matches Gucci 3’s heart accord, with sillage in the 1 foot region.
This is a great scent, but I have issues with the idea of spending $40+ for a partial bottle, when the alternates cost less ($18 for a FB of S2, GIII a little more), and have more sillage.
I recommend testing before buying- unless you find a vintage bottle at a *really* great price.
losyozhik – :
One of my favourite chypres. I treat my remaining two half bottles like holy relics.
reznow – :
Startled to see that rose is not often mentioned in the reviews here.
For me, this is mainly about roses. Smoldering roses, leather, oakmoss and patchouli.
Dark and beautiful.
Augmesimmes97 – :
okay so i dont think i like aldehydes. its all i get at the opening and it just smells bad on me. kinda harsh and cold and like soap. as it settles i dont get any floral. i get leather, vetiver, oak moss, and it is warmed a little by the amber. i think for me without the aldehydes it would be amazing. just as it stands it comes off so harsh to me. maybe my tester is old. it kinda reminds me of like rolling around in the mud in a sexy kinda way. it really has a woody vibe to it. maybe a perfume for someone who likes to hike? i think after the opening it smells okay, but i really dislike the opening. i imagine a woman sitting by a camp fire that is almost out after a day of hiking. she is sexy and a little mysterious. dark and a litte cold, and as the embers go out you want to be next to her, alone in the woods.
it almost has a unisex vibe no my skin, since im not getting floral. another person said tabbacco leaves and i get that too.
Fam0s – :
Yellow opening – a lot of narcisse as I like it. A perfect proportion of aldehydes.
It is a great inoffensive every day perfume for a lady.
It reminds med very much of another of Guccis gems – L’arte.
asperin – :
I used to have a mini of this somewhere. It smells like an expensive drink. It was warm, a bit soapy, and has a tingly champagne note. What remains on the skin is gorgeous—-rich yet fine soapy chypre where no single note dominates. Everything is well blended and uniform. I was just too young when we met ( I was 13). If I smell this again, I am very positive I will like like it even more.
I wish they make fragrances as beautiful as this again. It is a nice memory fragrance—something a man will remember you by. Sigh.
phx642InsuffBooni – :
I love this fragrance, but on me, it does not smell of leather – it is earthy, green with a soft floral lingering presence. Definitely sexy…smart…confident, yet flirty. I think it is very seductive – I definitely get a reaction when I wear it. It can be worn at work, on the weekend getting cozy and out on the town. A “classy” scent. More of a Fall to Winter scent in my opinion because it is heavy.
When I was younger, I would smell it from the bottle and think it was too green and strong, but after a half hour on the skin, it becomes wicked. Definitely for a woman who is confident and sassy and can handle the attention. Not a girly fragrance. Much too seductive. You have to wear this one..not smell it from the bottle because it comes off as too strong, when in actuality it really transforms and becomes a soft, spicy, fresh yet warm scent that lingers for hours. I tend to think it smells best on truly strong and sensual women…must be something in their chemistry.
Baka A – :
Just bought one on ebay. I think it’s either fake or gone off. Smells stale and musty and nothing like I remember it. The juice is dark brown, not golden as I recall it. Boo.
Matis99 – :
I got this fragrance as a Christmas gift in the 80’s. At first wear I didn’t think alot of it, but over time it grew to be one of my all time favorite fragrances. I liken it to a fine Scotch. This is a fragrance you grow to appreciate.
Inuyasha – :
Though not identical, you can still get vintage Cachet at low prices, which is a good substitute for Gucci 3. If you need tuberose in it, however, you won’t get that from Cachet. If you do try Cachet make sure it is made by Prince Matchebelli and not the new company (is it Jean Phillipe?).
vsd722intitytek – :
Love Gucci 3. I transform when wearing it. Mysterious, worldly, confident.
toort – :
When I wear it, I feel sexy and self confident. Indeed, the best fragrance from Gucci. So hard to find it. What a pitty!
zimarin68 – :
This was another great fragrance from the early 80’s. These reviews have conjured up the scent for me and brought back lots of memories of great times spent wearing this lovely fragrance.
nikita_adidas – :
I shouldn’t have liked this perfume.
I hate tuberose.
I dislike chypres.
The combination made this perfume absolutely amazing.
It’s tragic that it’s so hard to find now. I suppose it was never a big seller – I never smelled it on anyone else – it wasn’t a “Coco” or “Giorgio” of its time.
I wore it when I was at school – which is amusing as it couldn’t have been less of a teenager’s perfume – but when I went to a reunion recently a classmate that I hadn’t seen in years asked me what it was that I used to wear back then. She was gutted that after years of wondering and smelling and trying to remember what it was I used to douse myself in when we were getting ready to go to school dances the perfume she always used to borrow was discontinued!

“-But i am not into green perfumes with aldehydes.”
“-Ahhh, who are you kidding?”
“-No, really! I don´t like that very much.”
“-eeeehh, shut up and enjoy!”
“-Does it suits me well? You think so?”
“-Good enough to stop pretending you don´t like it THAT much!”
This is kind of dialog was going in my head while i was wearing this perfume for the last 30hrs.
Have you heard stories that perfumes don´t last at all, or max several hours? Well, forget it with this one!!! It´s been almost 36hours on my skin now, i have had a busy day at work and i can still smell it on my skin! After 24 hrs it was still going quite strong! 2 sprays only!!
The scent itself you ask?
Well, i have both EDT spray and pure parfume and back in the days i started with a parfum. I liked it very much. I found it to be beautifully floral with an interesting undertone of green notes. It was a summer period.
So i went for a EDT now during an early springtime. A bit different. It starts as a sharp green one. Maybe too much green even, more than i expected it to be. That bothered me, so i was undecided. Vetyver is sharp, but it battles with tuberose. Vetyver wins, tuberose (and some other flowers) fades away defeated very quickly. It stays green BUT turns after an hour into deliciously leather scent. This is a worn leather. It has been worn for a long time and became soft, worn and inherited all the scents of the owner (in a good way, you know that smell when you put on a vintage leather jacket). She has been using some rose perfume by the way while wearing this leather jacket and even maybe some “Magie noire”, so all those scents are mixed together give you an impression of what it smells like on a drydown. Bold. Outstanding. Vintage.
I would say this one has even more of a vintage feeling than some other vintage scents even older than this one. Still undecided about the weather, which one it suits the best, must be autumn. Can be perfect for a girl in her late 30´s i think, but it is not a written rule.
This classy Gucci along with Gucci Arte ARE the top scents of the house of Gucci in a matter of quality.
Aplause! Bravo!
UPDATE (a year later, late winter in cold northern Europe):
I have been using it since quite some times and i must admit that this perfume has moved from “Like” category to “Love” category. This is finest quality Gucci which is one of my all time favorite Gucci´s now ever. Exceptional lasting power (i have EDT), great potency and simply unique. Don´t overlook it because it is chypre and you mucght dislike chypres. If you like/love “Silences” by Jacomo, then this one is even much better. I love them both but “nr.3” is way over in terms of quality and composition to my nose. I personally prefer it to “Silences” because it has tuberose and leather amazing combination. I do have severeal bottles, but i would love to get some more whil i can to be sure i never will run out of this supreme masterpiece.
Love it espcially during cold northern winter time.

I have this perfume ooops sorry EDT in the 120ml spray bottle and love it. You only need a couple of small sprays and it lasts all day which is fantastic. It is such a sexy smelling fragrance and makes you feel so special when you are wearing it you are almost smirking when you walk past people because people just stop what they are doing and smile and ask what are you wearing it’s gorgeous. It is such a shame that it is so hard to find and when you do you are looking at paying well over £120 for this size. I was very lucky when I got this as I swapped it for an item I had on an online site and this bottle hadn’t been used or if it had it was only once or twice and was boxed. On receiving it I checked it was genuine and sprayed it and thankfully YES it was genuine and had the lasting power that I remembered. Like most wonderful, long lasting, popular fragrances the manufacturers seem to discontinue them at the height of their popularity and then make a similar fragrance that isn’t as strong or long lasting. It’s such a shame this has been discontinued and no doubt if it is brought back (which i’m sure they will) it will prob not be as rich and long lasting as the original (but I could be proved wrong? Fingers crossed! Lol) This fragrance is for a female in her 30’s plus who knows what she wants and feels secure in herself (or wants to give that impression! Lol) and also wants to turn heads and is (or wants to be) a little bit flirty. It is an intoxicating fragrance that even though it is strong is somehow not offensive during the day in the office but sultry enough for the evening to let people know that you are there but once again NOT in an offensive way (if that makes sense? Those who have this or have had this or smelt it will know exactly what I mean) If people are desperate for this I would say check on ebay or some on-line fragrance stores as some stores on line do seem to have it (from looking on-line in the last few days) Luckily for me I (as I have said) have the 120ml spray bottle so this will last me quite a long time especially as I will not have to spray it during the day also. If you can get this fragrance it is well worth the money (there are some on ebay at the moment selling 30ml, 60ml and 120ml just for your info) I am holding onto this baby and will wear it when I need cheering up, want to feel sexy/flirty or when I want to feel like I can achieve and do anything and no-one will or can stop me (so quite often then)! Lol! The fragrance actually reminds me a bit of Estee Lauder Youth Dew (the original NOT the amber although that is lovely also)as it has similar notes but doesn’t have as much of the powdery smell. xxx
zak940 – :
Well, this perfume has been discontinued for more than 10 years now. I happened to find – and buy it, of course – the 120ml bottle at a perfume shop in a small city. What a great treasure! I wear it at my job and everybody asks me which perfume is this. I just reply “Gucci”, but, you folks, know what I mean!
naverds – :
I like this. Very vintage and unique. I agree that the leather sensation is powerful with Gucci 3. Thank you to the review that talks about working with horses and how this fragrance completely reminds you of that experience!! I am going to wear it next time I go riding!! The more I think about it, the more your description is totally accurate of what this perfume smells like. I wonder if the makers had that in mind; especially considering that is used as one of their primary symbols.
Also, after 3-4 hours I smell fresh tobacco. Not smoked, but the kind that sits in a bag waiting to be put in a pipe…interesting.
Razers – :
And I want to add that the amber really has a kick here! All in all the leather note accentuates this fragrance, making it heavy but sexy scent. For a confident high-fly women 35+ !! 😀
jenaplana – :
A heavy scent but classy! Really “made a statement” fragrance. And I remember wearing it on my wedding day. I must admit that time was my first encounter with aldehydes. And I am proudly announce that I still keep my “vintage”; a 7,5 ml parfum (o.25fl. oz) as a gem. Well suited for a dinner out, going to operas, or galas with fancy gowns, sophisticated pearls and high heels
pjharvey – :
This is the “smell of my childhood” as my mother used to wear it when I was small. I am sad to hear that it is hard to find now as I was thinking about getting it…I hope it will find its way back to the shops!

There was a older lady used to come into the market that I used to work at all the time and she used to wear this I could always tell when she was in the store because I could smell this perfume even before I could see her. It smelled so good but this is a very hard perfume to find now.
Nalkallerry – :
Gucci III reminds me of when I was a young girl. At that time I had a great interest in horses. The soapy leathery smell resembles the care for the saddles and bridles.
We were a bunch of girls in the saddle room. First we used a hard yellow half translucent leathersoap and with that worked up a foam. After that we gently washed the dirt away with damp cloth. And then after drying, we used a lot of red-brown colored leather fat, in order to make the leather soft and smooth. The smell in that room, just next to the horses, was just amazing and represented everything we loved.
So, what I get most from Gucci III is a beloved soapy leather combined with a large amount of patchouli, which in this metaphoric description actually would be the warm, sweet, slightly animalistic note from the horse itself, or the dirt from it. The floral notes then? Well, on my skin, the flowers are very weak. Weak, but also delicate and beautiful.
Try before buy is my recommendation. I love it and I will buy it but I’m having a hard time to find out when to actually use it. I’m going to finish my mini first, and use it in different occasions to see where it actually works for me.
oleg40 – :
I decided to test the Edt
It does smell the same as the parfum only less intense and the lasting power is not quite as good (as is to be expected).
On me Gucci 3 is very fresh but at the same time inviting, the adelhydes and bergamont are very dominant in the top notes lending a soap like characteristic to the composition but it is very pleasant. these notes are present throught the perfume though they loose some of their initial strength.
the rose in the heart is completely lost to my nose; on me there is nothing floral about this compostition.
I clearly detect the musk, leather and amber in the dry down which give the fragrance a sexy sophistication.
There is nothing pretty or girly about this scent but instead there is a mystery, the scent dares you to invetsigate further and eventually seduces you with its uniqueness.
It is not a fragrance for girls but is a potent weapon in the hands of a mature woman who knows what she wants and knows how to get it.
Here’s a little secret: I plan to wear Gucci 3 on my honeymoon.
big-telya81 – :
Warm aldehyde opening that feels a bit old fashioned, but elegant, mysterious and powerful… I guess phase when Gucci was releasing their old perfumes was the best thing they’ve ever done. I admire their one of latest Gucci by Gucci (it has some interesting edge), but Flora- it might be nice, but no, definitely not Gucci. It doesn’t smell Gucci in my opinion- it’s bad example of wasting good name on such bad compote. Which smells like perfume named Kristine N.2 and costs like 3$ for 15ml.
Gucci 3 is such perfect leathery chypre. Warm aldehyde with green notes and later I detect soft beautiful lily of the valley, jasmine. Warm, comforting and expensive it is.
Shame they discontinued it… I guess if it would be available now they would ruin and reformulate it (due to it contains oakmoss, bergamot and jasmine).’-‘
Later it continues to develop and is balanced sour and sweet accompanied by leather and woods soaked in sweet floral oils. It runs in my memory wardrobe and picks out various memories- elegant evening dress and massive gold accessories (where did they come out? o_O). I am sitting on a bench in garden and enjoy the smell of various flowers there. Other, I am in forest and there is place where lilies of the valley grow, I pick a very fragrant bouquet and take it home. Yeah, this fragrance smells of my childhood.

this is a very long lasting fragrance. it has a unique scent that is very intriguing.
it’s a good perfume and although i may think that others may be more beautiful i’ll have to that i have never smelt anything similiar.
i have the tiny parfum and i was considering buying the 4.2 oz toilette. (i heard it’s very hard to find in the US but it’s available at a store in my country at a very reasonalbe price so i thought i’d a shot)
so i would like insight from other reviewers as to whether there is any significant difference between parfum and the toilette.

I love Gucci III, wore it when it came out in the 80’s, but it never came off as “dark and sexy” or a heavy fragrance on me. It seemed very light and sparkly! My best friend sniffed in my direction one day while I was wearing it and said “Isn’t that perfume a little too pristine for you to be wearing?” My DH referred to it as my “Barbie doll” perfume. I would wear it again if it was still available, and, no, I haven’t found anything comparable. Let me know if you do! (I still have a couple of minatures to wear on occassion.)

agree with you. I feel very confident when using this one. and proud of being myself. not everyday frag, but when I am bored with feeling clean and fresh, when I feel that I hate crowds it’s a good one. I have my own space wearing Gucci 3, and I’m glad that I have my own bottle.
Hramouy – :
Deep, dark, somewhat leathery and strangely woody. This is a sexy fragrance and is not for the shy. If you do not enjoy aldehydes, this is not the one for you. It’s an ’80’s’ perfume to be sure. I don’t get any tuberose or lily from this. To me, there is a good deal of bergamot-green-smell at first spray (but by no means is this light or citrusy-it’s all heavy) and after that, it is straight to dark and sexy. By the time it dries down, you have a lovely amber patchouli mix. I love this one and feel very confident when I wear it but it is certainly one to be applied lightly. Not one for the board meeting at work if you know what I mean…..
