Oftentimes, when I’m in the mood for a classic green, fresh scent, I reach for Greenbriar even before Creed GIT or Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar. Greenbriar’s greenness is transparent, airy and refreshing. For that reason alone, I prefer it in warmer weather. Greenbriar provides a man with a sense of comforting reassurance and understated masculinity.

I like the Greenbriar soap alright, but the cologne is a little fruity, powdery, and soapy, but nothing stands out.

I have the new bottle and it indeed smells nothing like GIT or Coolwater. It is much more herby than either of those and reminds me a lot of Acqua di Parma Colonia. It’s a great summertime general purpose scent. Performance is quite excellent. Lasts all day and projects very well.

Fantastic juice!! Well made and you can smell the quality of ingredients. On my skin I do a get little GIT/Aspen/CW vibe, but on clothes it’s almost a different scent all together. The citrus, artemisa, herbs and vetiver are far more up front and its much grassier. (I suggest spraying on skin and clothes) Also the sprayer has that nice whooosh with a great mist. I would recommend Greenbriar for someones collection/rotation.
Update 3/17/18 – I have noticed since my purchased the juice getting more grassy and herbal and what little GIT/Aspen/CW vibe I got is fading.

My bottle of Greenbriar must be the original formulation, because it smells nothing like Cool Water. Nor was “ozone” (listed on the current packaging) in common use in perfumery in 1984, when Greenbriar was introduced . What it DOES smell like is a much-diluted version of Polo’s top and middle notes — the opening is fresh and green but with an ambery-woody undertone. Instead of Polo’s rich tobacco-leather-patchouli base, Greenbriar’s drydown is a subtle. smooth, somewhat sweet amber accord that keeps the greens going. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Halston 1-12 or Grey Flannel, but softer and more subtle.
Overall, it’s quite pleasant, but not nearly as distinctive or long-lasting as one would expect from an 80’s fragrance, especially one in the lineage of Polo.

I found a bottle of the vintage version (dark green liquid) and like Bigsly I don’t get the comparisons to Cool Water. This isn’t an aquatic. This is a robust fragrance, with a strong 70’s vibe about it. Maybe the reformulated version is closer to Cool Water.
There’s a slight “barbershop” quality to this… but it goes deeper. More green and lush, and I could swear this has oakmoss in it. A wonderful balance of herbs and citrus, with woods and vetiver supporting. Also, reminiscent of Deviline Woto. First fragrance I’ve found that is similar to that old forgotten cologne.

A lighter likeness to Green Irish Tweed, very refined and sophisticated. Green aromatic goodness!

Based on a couple of dab samplings: the new version is pale yellow (in the bottle pictured above) and has similarities to Cool Water. It’s not as sweet/powdery as CW and there’s no tobacco, though. The original Greenbriar is a green color (cylinder shaped bottle) and not at all like CW. It’s a smooth herbal scent with a bit of sweetness and it’s a touch animalic. The texture is like smooth sandpaper, which I tend to like, and there is mild musk. I think I should have applied more of the original so I’ll have to update when I give it a regular wearing. The new version isn’t bad but I’d go for vintage Green Water or Green Jeans instead under similar circumstances. I certainly prefer the new version to any version of CW or Aspen, though I’d rather wear GIT (not suggesting that they are similar, but since many people feel that way I thought I’d mention it).
UPDATE: Over time I noticed an incense-like note in the vintage, which I assume is sandalwood, perhaps with a bit of vetiver, though I don’t get clear vetiver at any point.

Within the same family as Cool Water or GIT, but with more natural-smelling botanicals…it really feels like I’m smelling a bunch of mashed and extracted plant parts, much more so than with CW or GIT. The sweetness is much less than in GIT (which I think is a bit too sweet) and it also doesn’t have the sharp astringence that I get from Cool Water when I breathe deeply over the spot that I sprayed. It lasts reasonably well to boot. Just watch out when buying because with Greenbriar you get 1.7 oz at the same price as 3.0 oz of most of the others (not that it’s expensive by any means). Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) it has its own unique bottle, as opposed to the standard C-M men’s one. I might replace my Cool Water and GIT sample with this when they run out in about 5000 years!

Smells like vintage Cool Water. If you’re not a fan of the current version of Cool Water, and you’re looking for an alternative to the old stuff, try Greenbriar. It’s a bit greener than Cool Water (hence the name), but otherwise they’re twins.

Just bought this blind with fairly high expectations. To be honest its very nice but it basically smells like gillette shaving cream. Not a bad thing at all but it isnt exactly unique. I guess in a way its a good thing because it can come as shaving soap/cream and aftershave etc. It does have a bit of a woodsy spice at the dry down which i do like very much. Still on the fence about buying another bottle as there are so many others i want to try of their line.
