This is a beautiful creation. This is finest Gaiac wood but not the freshly cut one, its a hot gluing and very dry gaiac wood surrounded by the warm smell of fire and finest smoke, warm cloves and tiny bit of subtle vanilla and amber. It radiates heat. In drydown i see some similarities to Lalique Equus, because the Gaiac wood and the Sequoia wood in Lalique are not very far away from eachother in terms of vibe and general smell. To me it leans slightly feminine specially during the drydown as the smoke starts to vanish and he whole thing starts to sweeten up.

Agonising. The smell of frustration. Because this would be very close to my favourite perfume in the whole wide world, ever … if only the performance matched its beauty. Wearing it is like finding a drop-dead-gorgeous partner, so perfect for you that you can scarcely believe it, and you think “whew, my lifelong search is over” … until you realise that however unbelievably attractive they are, they just can’t keep up with you.
I love gaiac wood in more or less anything – that warm, rich, spicy, mellow, let-me-cradle-you aroma never fails to make me happy – and the first 30-60 mins of this are among the most wonderful versions of the accord I’ve ever sniffed. Unisex-to-femme, in my view (thus gentler and sweeter than many of my other most favoured wood scents), and impeccably classy, with whimper-inducingly delicious tinges of amber and spice. The vanilla and cloves are clearly there, but kept well in check so the whole effect never gets over-gourmand or too pushy. Any man or woman could wear it and to more or less any occasion. Never too edgy, never too generic – it walks the tightrope with breathtaking poise. So gorgeous it keeps my nose more or less stuck to my wrist.
But – once again, House Micallef raises my hopes, only to dash them to the ground and grind them to dust underneath its callous Frenchy boot. Because as time goes on, this shrinks dramatically in presence and projection; a couple of hours in and it’s only a skin scent; 4-5 in and it’s more or less completely gone.
Zut alors! I could weep. Maybe I’ll just sulk. So infuriatingly near to perfection, yet so far from satisfaction as a real-life user. However: if you want to smell like heaven for a brief, gorgeous interlude, give this one a go.

The purchase that turned me into a guaiac wood fan. And If you love cloves, bonus as this scent is clove dominant during the first hour. A very good vanilla is forward in the composition too. In fact, there is nothing I don’t like in this well blended perfume from M. Micallef, from beginning to end, more than 6 hours later when it finally turns to a skin scent.
Even though it’s not listed as unisex, it is indeed perfect for women. I think it leans slightly feminine if that matters. Sillage stays close, I’ve never gotten a compliment but I still like it a lot. I’m looking forward to buying it again when the weather gets a little cooler.

Gaiac is a light woody, warm/spicy scent suitable for mild warm weather. It feels totally unisex and safe if you love cloves.. I do!
I get vanilla which feels ethereal, lightweigt but present. And beautiful spicy cloves with dominant and delicate guaiac wood. Quite natural smell. These 3 are the dominant notes. There’s also mild amber and mild vetiver.
Longevity is nice but most of its life stays close to the skin. My only complain..

This is a beautiful soft and warm woody fragrance. The problem, however, is it’s performance and ephemeral nature. At times I can smell it pretty strongly, but other times I’ll press my nose to my wrist and just barely detect it. Maybe it’s to do with olfactory fatigue. It seems to completely fade after 5-6 hours, with just a slight vanilla skin scent remaining. It’s too bad because when I can smell it, it’s incredible. I’ll be sampling the fragrances people here have mentioned as similar, including Dark Horse and By the Fireplace, to see if I can find a closely related scent with better performance.
Update: Dame Dark Horse is very, very similar to Gaiac. Almost identical, actually. I’m still comparing in terms of performance but I at least know I don’t have the same olfactory fatigue issues with Dark Horse–the sillage seems stronger. Not sure if projection or longevity are any better though. It’s a bit less delicate of a scent, a little heavier on cloves maybe? Gaiac seems softer in comparison, not just in terms of sillage but the scent itself. I really like Dark Horse and I think I’d recommend it over Gaiac because of the much better price. Great service from Dame too–they offer 5ml samples and sent a bunch of other samples with my order.
By the Fireplace is not at all like Gaiac.

A delicate warm confection of a fragrance. It is a subtle masculine-leaning juice that blends in the central note of the balsamic gaiac wood with a notable vanilla, and slight hints of bergamot, jasmine, cloves, and vetiver. Very tranquil, sensual, and unobtrusive. The perfume is for men with a slightly sweet tooth. It projects softly and lasts long but is very subtle and sweet. It is particularly suitable for wintry days when you want to uplift your mood a bit. Much like a batch of freshly baked cookies, this is a happy and warm concoction that deserves much appreciation. Sweet!

I got it today. It’s beautiful, sensual, warm, woody composition with intense clove and soft guaiac wood. Rich and smooth for winter days. It was a blind luck – I love it, but I have the same fragrance already at home – as Replica by the fireplace.

Ooooh!! Gaiac is very sensual! I love it!!! It’s no way masculine on me – not at all. Very feminine!! As another reviewer says, it’s definitely for anyone. I think it’s gorgeous!!! Beautiful warm rich smoky slightly spicy woods. Gorgeous!!!

This can’t be more comforting than it is. The gaiac wood here so soft and silky and luxurious. And very delicious this scent as we love wearing it in the fall…..

I recently added a bottle of this to my collection. It was a blind buy based on the notes and some of the reviews. I am glad I did.
The Initial spray is a soft woods, but quickly a spiciness appears. Although not listed in the notes, I get a distinct pepper note in the opening. Heavy cloves follow the pepper and are tamed just a bit by the jasmine and bergamot. In the dry down, I get a woody / smoky / vanilla vibe that is tempered with a bit of a clean / soapy feel. It is almost like layering CdG’s 2 Man and Wonderwood.
Overall, Gaiac is beautiful, warm and rich, with a touch of sweet and spicy. It is a very inoffensive scent. Meaning that is fits for all occasions. It works well in a suit and well as in casual attire.
I agree with other reviews that has said that Gaiac is more of a unisex scent, even though it is marketed to men. I can easily see a woman pulling off this scent.
Bottom line: if you like woody scent, you should try a sample of this and pay no mind to the gender classification. Ladies you should try this as well if you like woody scents.

Just got a decant and thought that I’ve smelled this before. This is very similar to Dame’s dark horse, however, I think this is less cloying and more well-rounded than Dame’s offering. However, I’m not knocking Dark Horse at all, I love that scent, just saying this tops it.

  13. :

smells beautiful! just like Dame’s Dark Horse … but Dame is half the price with 5x more sillage. Do yourself a favor and try Dark Horse . Samples are super cheap in US and Canada via the website.

I bought the discovery booklet from the official website. I just love exploring them.
The opening is gaiac, it is right there in the opening on my skin, it is gorgeous, strong, woody. There is also a hint of bergamot underneath the woody note. The opening softens as jasmine enters the composition, the gaiac is softer for the jasmine but then jasmine then gradually becomes soft over generous helpings of sweet spicy cloves. There is a hint of vanilla, the fragrance is sweet but not overly so, it is warm, likable, comfortable and cozy.
The fragrance morphs into a beautiful vetiver-ambery base. The gaiac is still on my skin dominating the drydown is woody with soft cloves.
Ignore that Gaiac is marketed towards men, it is completely unisex, so warm, sweet and woody-women will smell effortlessly sexy when they wear this. It is really nice to wear in this brisk weather today. It lasts almost all day on my skin and sillage is intimate, closer to my body.

Beautiful Guaiac wood and cloves. Gaiac is very nicely blended, it is warm and subtle. It is a sweet clove mixed with vanilla and amber, very comforting. It is very masculine. The bottle is beautiful.

  16. :

This is delightful! It’s very warm and sweet, but not very strong though. I will be thankful if this lasts the rest of the evening.

  17. :

    5 out of 5

It’s a variable clove bomb with subtle vanilla running below the surface and a oddly sweet, woody note that I can only allude to being the gaiac wood. There’s a definite honey vibe to it even though the note is not listed. Amber and hint of vetiver take the sting out of the dominance of the clove and make it very delightful experience that enchants the olfactory senses rather than assaulting them like this much clove can do.
The bergamot is non-existent, sorry to say and the jasmine is just barely there in the initial spray but doesn’t stay long at all.
Overall it’s a subtle elegant fragrance with understated class and a warm and inviting aromatic aroma. Sometimes cozy and snug too but overall downright beautiful.
Sillage is only about 2 to 2 ½ feet (as much as I can tell, that’s almost an arms length for me) but leaves a very notable trail that lingers for what seems like ages.
Great longevity! After five hours still smells like the first half hour! Only during the sixth hour did it start to dissipate and very slowly at that.
9 out of 10. [Edit] (I AM now addicted completely to this perfume.)
Note: Has the amber, honey side to it as Hugo Boss – The Collection: Jasmine and Silk but with a strong clove aroma and just detectable jasmine.

Soft, powdery, cozy cloves…this is yummy. To me, totally unisex. I swooned when my husband put it on, but thoroughly enjoyed wearing it myself, as it is pretty powdery and I like powdery. Very subtle sillage — I didn’t smell it on myself much but then got whiffs here and there and thought, “Mmmm I smell good.” Totally agree with a previous review comparing this to woody bubble gum. Sampled this approx. 6 months ago and fell in love despite the low sillage and longevity, but didn’t love the price. Figured maybe someday I’d ask for it as a gift.
Enter….Dame Perfumery Scottsdale Dark Horse. Had a few drops left in the sample vial of Gaiac and did a side by side comparison. Gaiac is much more powdery, to the point that it smells like baby powder when smelled immediately after Dark Horse (although I think this is only when comparing so closely…when I sampled Gaiac on its own I NEVER thought it smelled like baby powder). Dark Horse has something more pungent and assertive in the opening, and retains a more assertive clove note throughout. However, as time goes on, Gaiac feels one-note, whereas Dark Horse settles into something rounder, cozier, maybe more vanillic? Don’t know what’s up with my skin this time but I can smell just a hint of both the next morning when I put my nose to skin (this never happens to me); I think they may both contain some Iso E Super but Dark Horse feels just a touch less scratchy.
Both are lovely in their own right, powder lovers will likely prefer Gaiac. But for my clove and guaiac fix, my money’s on Dark Horse.

Very very nice, perfect for the winter months, only the clove is a bit sharp working to my throat.

  20. :

    5 out of 5

What a great scent! Sweet vanilla, woods and clove. Best warn in cold weather. Leans far towards unisex due to the sweetness. This lasts for 10 hours on me, although the sillage is not overpowering. After several hours, the vanilla dies down but the clove stays. Unfortunately the price knocks it down a notch. But I will be keeping a sample in my collection for special occasions.

  21. :

    5 out of 5

Absolutely beautiful for a cold winter day. All the notes are there, as promised: woody, white floral, powdery, and vanilla. Contrary to the way it is advertised, I find it to be a unisex fragrance.

  22. :

    4 out of 5

Gaïac opens quite woody and peppery, the gaiac is quite prominent. The scent then becomes softer and rounder, the gaiac still going strong together with the cloves. The drydown is sweet with a hint of white florals. After all notes fade away only iso-e-super remains on my skin.
Sillage is soft to moderate, longevity moderate to long.
I like how this scent opens with all the woody and spicy notes. Gaiac wood is one of my favorites. The iso-e-super in the drydown, not so much– so I either re-apply or wash it off. This scent is unisex.
All in all, a nice scent. Will use the sample again, not sure if I’ll buy a full bottle though. I wish the sillage was a bit stronger.

  23. :

    3 out of 5

Ever wondered what a woody bubble gum would taste like? Well that’s it. Very playful, inviting at the beginning with all the sweetness and care free.
To me warm cloves, gentle jasmine and tasty vanilla take the leading role in this wonderful composition and everything is glued together by a woody aura. Extremely inoffensive (as long as you like cloves) and quite unisex.
However don’t expect people to hear you whenever you pop those bubbles you are making. It is a skin scent.
    I like it.

  24. :

    5 out of 5

I do not understand why it’s not possible to extend the sillage of this spicy and elegant scent! You should use an entire bottle of 30ml (expensive) a day to have a constant smell! Pity because this fragrance is really nice.

  25. :

    5 out of 5

Such a beautifull scent, it’s a shame that it doesn’t last very long and projection is minimal, still a great scent, on my wish list even though is on the expensive side.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

Such a perfect harmony of sweetness (not cloying), woodiness and spiciness! I’m absolutely in love! Poor longevity? You’ve got to be kidding! I wore it yesterday and it was felt throughout the day after one morning application only! And without being overbearing. It just made me feel so goooood. Definitely aimed at colder/wetter weathers. The only thing I’m not crazy about here is the bottle which I find too feminine.

  27. :

    5 out of 5

if you liked the gaiac note in Bois Vanille by SL (yes, some lucky buggers like me don’t just get a candy feel to it ;)) and wished it was more enhanced, then this is the juice to go for. I have had no issues with longevity, it lasts almost all day and pretty strong and persistent for at least a good 7-8 hours. The gaiac smells more wet than dry but that might have something to do with the oceanic climate. It gets softer and sweeter when the temperature rises.

  28. :

    5 out of 5

Gaiac is a soft woody scent, perfectly balanced with sweetness and woods, gentle floral notes and a whisper of spice. It wears very close to the skin. While unisex, I found this fairly feminine on me. I like it however it smells almost exactly the same on my skin as EL Sensuous. The poor sillage and lack of staying power of this one don’t justify the price at all I feel, but I enjoy it’s autumnal presentation and feeling. If this had a bit more oomph I’d be hooked.

  29. :

    4 out of 5

I was expecting something a little more unisex, but this comes across as soft and feminine. It’s a sweet, comforting perfume, I get more floral and vanilla than I do wood notes. It sits close to the body and the longevity is superb, more than 8 hours on me. I wish on me that I got more of the spice and wood notes the previous reviewers have mentioned. It’s nice, but not what I was looking for in my search for guaiac wood. I wanted something more CDG but this comes across more like the offerings of Parfumerie Generale.
EDIT: The longer this sits, only then does a slightly smoky-woodsy part come through. A lovely feminine scent still but that’s just my opinion. A safe blind buy.

  30. :

    3 out of 5

As a woman, I would definitely wear it. I actoually did not find it a typical masculine scent, a unisex- more so. It is woody, but soft at the same time, elegant, quiet, warm. Gaiac wood mixed with cloves and left in the heat of a summer day.
It is comforting, but also quite professional, clean. An excellent scent, for my liking a bit too close to the skin, I would like it to project more and envelope not only my writs. The staying power could be a bit better, 2/3 hours at most, for this price, is a bit disappointing.

  31. :

    5 out of 5

At the beginning i thought that i would smell something sharp might be like *oud* obtrusive smell no no.It is a well blended frag and softly done you will enjoy smelling the gaiac wood in a very sophisticated way, smoked vanilla forms magic aura around the fragrance and the clove make it deliciously spicy cause both Vanilla + Clove played off each other very well.
Drawbacks : costly & after 2 hrs it stays there but rather close to skin. Thanx for Watching 🙂

    Exquisite gaiac wood.
Soft, warmed by vanilla. Subtle clove and bergamotte give it an excellent light touch.
This scent is luxurious, intruiging and calm.
I am impressed: love at first encounter.
Edit: sillage medium and longevity minimal

i sample it and i really like i but the problem is the price
30ml= 73 euro is too much
if its 70ml or 100ml 73 euro its ok
but for only 30 its no go !!
    about the smell
sillage and projection are good also as longevity
and the thing why i like it is because the smell is mixed with woody notes and coocnut mmmm

Whenever I smell gaiac wood, I am reminded of its beauty and how well it blends with my chemistry. It’s a shame that this note isn’t used more often in perfumery.
    M. Micallef Gaiac is a rather sensual and spicy woods scent. Although marketed for men, it’s more unisex than masculine, with a soft jasmine accord in the opening and a smooth vanillary drydown. It’s one of those fragrances that you can’t help falling in love with.
It’s the kind of scent that I crave during Autumn, when all the leaves are turning orange and red. The scent also makes me think of a tray of freshly baked spicy cookies, due to its rich, sweet and spicy warmth.
Some reviewers have picked up on the slight soapiness brought about by the fresh jasmine accord. While it doesn’t smother the spices or the woods, it adds a rather interesting texture to this composition. Due to this clean floral soapiness, I would describe M. Micallef Gaiac as smooth and inoffensive.
When applied with a light hand, this fragrance is quite intimate and seductive on the skin, however when sprayed in abandon, it tends to settle more like a loud oriental. I also discovered that the scent varies depending on the weather.
This might sound odd, but whenever I wear M. Micallef Gaiac I picture myself as Pocahontas, an exotic Native American woman, very Disney-like in character, running through a lush forest. Perhaps all those years watching Disney films have gone to my head, but if the Disney character or the real Pocahontas ever wore a fragrance, I’d imagine it would smell very similar to M. Micallef Gaiac.

  37. :

    5 out of 5

Lovely, soapy wood scent. It lacks the bite of other gaiac scents I’ve tried, being much softer, fairly sheer, almost comforting. It is a unisex scent: It isn’t sweet enough to make it exclusively female nor is it sharp or woody enough to make it only for men. Compulsively sniffable. I really like this one.

  38. :

    4 out of 5

I originally had this as a sample in a small vial. I liked the scent – it’s almost ethereally light with a beautiful fresh cut wood angle. And so I put it into a spray vial that I had, and wow, what a difference! While the scent is still bright and feather light, it also has a sweet, fire smoke aspect. Like tsth mentioned, a cool mountain evening around a campfire. I don’t have many FBs, but I think this one is FBW despite the painful price tag.
Having said all of that, it still feels as if there is a hole in the composition. I keep thinking ‘..this would smell fabulous if I added…’ So when the bottle gets here, I guess I’m going to be spending a lot of time experimenting. Looking forward to it!

For men, 9/10, stays close to the skin, love it with no reservation, lasts 6 hours at a constant level. I went in with a daub of pure essential sandelwood oil and this was what I downselected to, bought it with a passion. I get a two part sense, sandelwood and something crisper on top. No headaches, no unpleasant edges.

  40. :

    5 out of 5

An incredibly honest and well crafted spicy/woody composition which strikes me as extremely wearable and balanced. Woods are joined by a remarkable clove note that slightly leans towards the medicinal aroma but never gives the idea of going to the dentist. The drydonw is a comfortable woody/vanilla combo with just a tad of vetiver. Unpretentious but solid, sweet but never cloying, rich but not complex. Moderately powerful. Very, very nice.
    Rating: 7-7.5/10

This is my most precious guaic note fragrance. Pure and unadulterated GUAIC!! I could bathe in it. Not overpowering but powerful in a subtle, self-assured way. I liken it to a sweet, powdery wood (if that makes sense). The jasmine is so subtle and the bergamont is not too strong.
Luckyscent.com lists these notes for Gaiac:
bergamont, jasmine, cloves, gaiac, vetiver, vanilla

Unique, sweet and masculine, at first I thought it was for me, and the bottle seduced me into a fb purchase at the Lucky scent store. It turned out to be for a very important man in my life, I gave him the bottle and he wears it to this day. It would probably be wearable for me if I blended it with a vanilla, but I like it better on men I think.

Very nice, easy to wear scent. Vanilla note is wearable in this fragrance. It isn’t so pushy, so offensive like in other scents. It’s typical unisex perfume. Many says that this one is linear – right but i think that this is advantage. Gaiac note is so unique that if you like it you want to feel it all day long

Gaiac as other Micallef’s perfume is very noble, even though it is rather a straight smell – smell of the beautiful exotic tree – warm, sweet, a bit herbal. Quite a lot in it also a tasty vanilla. It smells very much exotic and at the same time aristocratically. It like very nice prince.Superb !
