Fragrance Review For Gaggia
Santa Maria Novella
Notes
Mimosa
Through eBay I got my hands on a bottle (gold cap) of this fragrant and sweet yellow flower. Mimosa is a scent that I start to crave in summer time. Gaggia is a fine sweet soft soapy floral, albeit not a true mimosa. For better mimosa I would go for L’Erbolario Demeter and dozens of other fragrances where mimosa is made more complex with other notes (flowers citrus vanilla green notes) but for me this is a plain clean mimosa. The opening is oily green and soapy like lathering up in a green bar of soap with a tangy but not harsh sweet clean yellow feathery mimosa.
It smells of a garden of mimosa flowers and has a mature connotation but that doesn’t bother me. It also has a European air more at home in the toilette and boudoir of a French Italian or German woman and not an American. This has a sweetness but has a deep green edge to it with a dry down that seems to be an unlisted but soft wood note.
It’s orange-yellow floral soapy woodsy and at times powdery. Inoffensive and subtle perfect for splashing not spritzing. This smells good on my wrists neck and naval. This doesn’t have a good sillage or much of a lasting power but it smells good after a shower or bath. I’ve also taken to pouring it into my bath water. Highly recommended for spring and summer for fans of florals and especially a standard mimosa. Gaggia is a good intro to mimosa.

I wonder if all the reviewers are smelling the modern? I have the vintage in the foil label and it is a powerhouse of amazing typical SMN floral potency. There is no soapy violet here. I actually put too much on today forgetting the old ones are so strong.
The notes
sweet yellow floral (mimosa) with grassy greeness and quite a bit of lemon supporting it all, very fresh and beautiful

One of the few insufficient fragrances by this great house. Basically, it’s a mimosa-violet candy; pretty, but too basic, too transparent.
A floral that doesn’t want to grow up.

a very green and nice mimosa , soapy , clean, bright as a spring morning . Beautiful basenotes , it lasts rather long

Sweet, synthetic, with that distinctive banana/candy mimosa note, a bit of a dusty pollen feel, and that ever-so-slightly decayed straw or hay underneath. I could imagine using this in small quantities for layering. On its own, it’s not beautiful enough, and it’s not complex enough, and a good perfume really needs to be at least one or the other.
