Description

Italian house of Acqua di Parma launches a new fragrance Essenza di Colonia which appears on the market in August 2010. Essenza di Clonia is accompanied by an interesting advertising campaign with photos by Giovanni Gastel.

Simple game of black and white announces Italian style and reminds us of tradition of the house and classic Art Deco Colonia flacon which was created as matt black flacon this time. The advertising campaign features an elegant smoking, which is an embodiment of style and elegance.

The new Essenza di Colonia is a flanker to edition from 1916, based on citrusy-woody notes of bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange, grapefruit, petit grain, neroli, sage, rosemary, lily of the valley, rose accords, jasmine, patchouli, vetiver, white musk and amber. The fragrance can be purchased as 50 and 100ml edc.

I don’t know how else to say this, but this fragrance does something to me when I smell it. It makes me feel like an electric current is passing through my brain, sounds dramatic but it’s true. Clean and fresh with some lively herbaceous elements. AdP Essenza brightens up your mood and leaves you feeling confident.
Its vibe leans more mature, but there are enough touches of modernity to keep it from feeling dated. One presents as refined and deliberate while sporting this gem.
It projects within an arms-length for me, for the first hour, then sits closer to the skin. It has decent longevity (maybe 8 hours), but you may not be noticed unless you are walking close by someone after a couple of hours of wear. It’s so elegant though that I’m ok with its subtlety. In fact, I think its subtlety enhances its effect when someone catches a whiff.
I would highly suggest trying AdP Essenza if you’re looking for a fragrance that screams refinement and confidence.

I finally understand what “soapy” means. Thank you ADP for the reminder that You’re not fully clean until you’re Zest-fully clean. Irish Spring: clean as a whistle. Aren’t you glad you use Dial? .. soap ads from my childhood flash through my mind with wafts of sillage. It may be the very smell of the soap-on-a-rope hanging from the Most Interesting Man in the World’s Madrid country villa’s el bano shower caddy.
    No balloons for this review.

It does not project, and it’s a very classy version of dated colognes. Good, but didn’t thrill me.

    Post-Spring/Summer/early Autumn emptied bottle update:
Essenza di Colonia is smooth and professional – any over 30s man comfortable with himself should wear this easily with style, dressed in either a Sunspel Riviera polo shirt, or a tuxedo, day or night.
AdP fragrances don’t have the best reputation for sillage and longevity but on hot days several sprays will see Essenza last throughout most of the day as a skin scent. Predominant opinion here suggests Essenza to be a summer fragrance but I have found slightly cooler weather to be more pleasant and help longevity – a few days on the north coast of France in 18-20°C weather and coastal winds really made EdC stand out.
Whilst Essenza doesn’t elicit particular memories or emotions it does make me feel good to smell it: clean and fresh and relaxed – this is my girlfriend’s favourite amongst my collection.
Great for daily wear throughout most of the year at the office, or casual or formal events – a real classic. I will buy another bottle of this next year with the full shower gel and deodorant stick coffret.

@pgs, not sure about you but I got a bottle of this 3 years ago and it’s still one of my top performing citruses.

  6. :

    5 out of 5

Not quite sure how I feel about this one yet. Off the top I get some great grapefruit mixed with other citruses, a little amber, neroli, Lily of the valley and Jasmine. The citrus top is great, but gone in like 2 minutes. Then all I get after that is this expensive soap vibe and not much else. Like old fashioned grandma soap. I personally like the original better. Old fashioned, but classy.

    -preamble-
Let’s face it: every Acqua di Parma fragrance-be it black, blue or brown- has very poor sillage.
Ingredients might justify the niche allure of the company, but one never gets what one has paid for.
    -Essenza:
It should be called “assenza” instead of “essenza”.
It is a very nice fragrance: soapy, but in a comforting way, easy to wear and I bet no man on this earth could ever dislike wearing this.
It lasts a few hours but projects for about twenty minutes before retreating into the land of the skin scents.
I find it masculine but in a barbershop way-which is good.
I bought a 180 ml. bottle and even though I bathe in it I always get the same results. Once I’ll run out of it I won’t buy another one.
Post scriptum: Neroli Portofino forte? You must be joking!

This is the best fragrance I have ever tried. I am not a fan of the original formula. This is a modern take on the old classic. I would consider it more of a mature fragrance, but not old. Some women I’ve asked said they don’t like it at all, but this is a man’s man fragrance. This is a professional scent, and if there were any scents that I’d same are similar, I’d say Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino and 4711. This fragrance is far superior to both though, and different as well. I’m not necessarily a fan of some neroli based colognes, but this one is done just right. I’ve taken a couple of friend’s over to the department stores, and 3 of the 4 purchased it on the spot. My other friend was with his woman, and the woman gave a funny face, and walked him over to the Creed section. I’m also a big fan of the Acqua di Parma Colonia Club. Check out my review on utube, Forever Neil.

Cary Grant as James Bond (it nearly happened) on a yacht off the Amalfi Coast.
The opening is the typical high quality citrus blend we know from the house, but it’s the dry down which transports you to another time and place.
One of those fragrances I’m scared to wear as I do not (yet) posses the sartorial elegance it deserves.

  10. :

    Perfection.
Clean, Citrusy, Neroli, Soapy, fresh, Sophisticated Mediterranean loveliness!
Agree it’s probably a 30+ scent, but sophisticated and mature, not ‘old man’.
Highly versatile. If I pick this up and sniff the bottle, I use it!!!

  11. :

    5 out of 5

Longevity excellent, the same goes for projection. Top notes fantastic — old school barbershop citrus vibe of ADP Colonia, but amped to the max. I’d say, a lot more oakmoss, musk, vetiver and cloves, almost to the point of being “warm” and leathery while also retaining the freshness. Nothing short of a perfect opening.
Unfortunately, after an hour or two, Essenza morphs into a plain white soap bar fragrance. What’s left, is definitely a clean, but at the same time coarsley alkaline and rigid smell of “public school discipline”. I’ve tried it several times, half-hoping that this time the opening accord would miraculously persist, but it always fades.
The more “poetic” reviews of this thread describing various nuances, style and interplay between the ingredients must have been written before 1-2 hour mark or based on a test strip test. With the top notes gone, it’s completely beyond me, how anyone could perceive ADP Essenza as anything else than plain soap.

This is 3 times cheaper, but not worse edition of Neroli Portofino Forte. It is 95 % similar to above mentioned scent. Differences are so subtle, and it is just more in favour of intensity for NPF. This edition of Acqua Di Parma is very much Mediteranean natural smeling scent. There are rosemary, bitter orange and some spices. This remind me on sun tan lotion which means summer, beach, sea, good times. Recomended specialy regarding of price – quality. 8/10

This instantly reminded me of Piz Buin sunscreen smell. Very clean and soapy. Then at first you get a sort of musky bergamot which dries down to more powerful citrus. It’s nice. I’d still call this somewhat unisex.

  14. :

Classic. Soothing. Non-offensive. Good performance. Equally good for dressed-up and casual. Even though I usually find white florals feminine or cloying, this one isn’t – and it’s become one of my favorites. Safe blind-buy.

I was really excited to try this one since I love Mugler Cologne and Creed Original Vetiver and this is touted by some as being in the same genre. The scent, though pleasant enough, was actually worse than Salvatore Farragamo’s Acqua Essenziale Colonia as far as barbershop scents go, and worse than Mugler Cologne as far as green neroli fragrances go. And longevity and sillage were not good at all on my skin. So this gets a pass unfortunately. Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Oud remains the best fragrance in their collection in my opinion.

Without exception, one of the finest all around men’s fragrances you can find. Extremely versatile and can be worn easily at work, casual, or a formal evening. A great fragrance asset for any gentleman’s wardrobe. 10/10 easily.

I don’t care for it. For me, it is walking into a fancy hotel and going to the mens room. There is a certain smell in there, combining the urinal cakes, the soap and any scents the hotel uses as air fresheners. But Colonia Essenza smells like this in a good way. Soapy. I would not want to smell this on anyone.
If I wanted a fresh out of the shower experience, I might opt for simply Mugler Cologne which is more acceptable and for more affordable. Both soapy but different.
However, the ingredients are so good in this that I might flip on this.

  19. :

It really does smell like soap. And not some high end sweet scented smelling soap, I mean plain old white bar soap. Not sure what the appeal is to pay such a price tag to smell like this. I’d say it may smell different on someone else, but it smells the same on paper and skin.

  20. :

Too soapy. The opening is horrible, but after 30mins it’s getting better and better. For me, not enough refreshing.

  21. :

    4 out of 5

Got off a 12 hr shift, ran my hand across my neck and I can still smell Colonia Essenza. Sillage is average but the projection is about 5 hrs on me. Nothing I would expect from an EDC.
The scent itself is clean, classy and mature. You can tell the moment you spray it on your skin that it’s high quality. I’ve worn it in the office a few times so far but I think it works great as a formal nighttime indoor scent.
Overall, I’d give this a solid 8/10. Great price and excellent longevity.
edit: After a few wearings, the scent has really grown on me. I initially viewed it as an older gentleman type of scent but in reality it just simply gives off a sophisticated and fresh vibe. 9/10.

Well I’m in awe of this one performing better than I imagined so therefore it really is worth testing on yourself. So calming but also giving a confidant vibe. This is what I wanted from Prada pour homme but now I don’t care as I’m taken with this mmmmmm

On of the best fresh citrus floral classical colonia scents available.
So pure, elegant and has one of the most refreshing and pleasant openings in my collection hands down.
Beautiful packaging and superb sprayer. Porjection is very good and longevity is above average considering it is a fresh colonia.
Top quality on every aspect. Doesn’t include any harsh notes like colonia intensa. It is another approach to the genre although I love the intensa version and its sophisticated composition.
The white florals are smoothly blended with tons of authentic citruses. Niche quality. The florals doesnt include neroli, it is petitgrain and jasmine that give the neroli feeling. It is – to me – a better version of TF neroli portofino.
For the classic colonia genre lovers: this is a must have.
Extremely natural, wearable, well composed, refreshing and beautiful.

After being tipped off to this scent by an avid fan, I’m awfully glad that I tried it for myself. Pure, authentic, timelessly-classy “soapy-fresh” fragrance that avoids pretense and delivers. While the notes listed here suggest a more citrusy top that might yield a “fruity-fresh” or “juicy-fruity burst,” I didn’t get that at all but immediately got a simple-but-profound, creamy, lathery, high-end bar soap vibe. Light powdery accord after a few minutes, followed by a fizziness (like a gentle cocktail) and an herbal-green sensibility thereafter. But all very subtle, simple, and classy.
Again, the simple purity thereof allows it to be very diverse…easily worn by perhaps a more seasoned affluent female seeking a “boudoir” scent, a young male professional going for a “fresh-clean” vibe, a boho-chic artisanal young woman, or any variation thereof. A superb “office scent” too, or alternative for those who “can’t stand wearing (or smelling) cologne.” An excellent “white t-shirt weather” scent for men. Best if allowed to take center stage versus and work its magic versus being mixed with other potentially conflicting scents (scented deodorants, body washes, or layerings with other colognes).
Respectably average projection on the first application, still detectable 8 hours later. Well done, Acqua di Parma!

Colonia Essenza begins with fresh and sparkling notes of sunny citrus and neroli from Italy. In the heart, rosemary, jasmine and clove mingle with lightly floral accords of rose, jasmine and lily of the valley. The suave and woody background is formed around patchouli, vetiver and white musk. A beautiful cologne that is part of the authenticity and elegance of the Italian style. This fragrance is similar to APOM by MFK and can be worn by both gender. Thumbs up for the quality price ratio, for the wearability and for the versatility.

This scent fits every kind of occasions (especially in the hotter days). It can be used casually with t-shirts or formally with a nice suit. Eventhough some brands are starting to make “cologne” smelling lines, this one is the best smelling and performing (longetivity wise) for me. It started of with a very potent lime and lemon smell, and then dries down to be more aromatic with vetiver, cardamom, and cedarwood (the lemon and lime are still noticable though). For those of you that are looking for a clean, simple, and versatile cologne, buy this one, you wont be dissapointed.
    I am 23 btw.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that my signature scent would be Terre d’Hermès Pure Perfume.
I so looooove TdH Pure Parfum!
But this cologne — AdP Colonia Essenza — changes everything now.
AdP Colonia Essenza is an incredible fragrance — soapy, classy, exquisite, refined.
For me this smells like a very expensive aftershave balm applied by a truly great barber in downtown Milan. I honestly cannot find a situation where this fragrance would be inappropriate.
Signature scent worthy… that is, if you’re comfy with the price tag!

    Incredible stuff.
It lasts forever on me. The best performing citrus/cologne/fresh scent in the world ever ever! EVER!
The smell is clear, clean and class. fresh and citrus without ever getting fruity. There’s a cleanliness about this, i dont want to say soapy because its so classy. Suits and smartly dressed men in office or about town, classy and understated.
It’s a spring and summer must have in my opinion, fairly linear but that’s fine as it smells great from the off.
    So yeah, I like it.

Sublime. Everything I love about AdP Colonia is accentuated with Essenza in a subtle but sophisticated way. This can be worn in a laid-back and formal manner. Feels right in the evening. The initial spray yields gentle citrus with firm spicy and herbal backing. It unfolds beautifully, projects comfortably and lasts a lifetime!

    Modern. Mature. Masterpiece.
What a gem from Acqua di Parma. Beautiful and bright citruses with a smooth musk base. This fragrance says you are classy, but you like to have a good time. Perfect for summer, day or night, and best suited on someone ages 25 and up. It is a mature scent but very modern. Doesn’t feel dated at all but there is something about that feels a bit classic.
Performance won’t disappoint. It is an eau de cologne but performs more like an eau de toilette. Leaves a nice sillage and lasts at least 6 hours, so solid overall.
    Amazing.
    10/10

Got few samples of this fragrance. First, start with a blast of citruses, green and neroli scent.Stay pretty linear. This is very a classy, inoffensive clean and uplifting scent. Great.
I do think this fit the more mature crowd 35+.
Very versatile. Casual, formal, great work office scnet.
    Spring and summer scent.
longevity is fair 4 to 5 hrs.
I think there are similarities to Neroli portofino, but according to Fragrantica voters to the Forte One (I do think its true because of the Neroli citrus scent but didn’t tried the Forte version)
So, according to my rating system, it got a 7/10
If I had to choose between Tom Ford Neroli Portofino line vs AdP Colonia Essenza, it’s the Colonia Essenza for being less expensive and you got better performance with that EdC and you won’t be fool by the EdP of Tom Ford.!

I don’t usually enjoy fragrances like this but this is really enjoyable. Now I hope this doesn’t anyone but this reminds me of really high quality italian soap, such as those from Nesti Dante. It’s clean, fresh, floral, it’s very nice….HOWEVER…I don’t think this is something I would choose to wear. It’s a very well done fragrance that smells beautifully clean and fresh with lots of white floral and citrus, but it’s just too soft for me and there’s not enough wood/spice for my liking.
That doesn’t mean I dislike this fragrance as I think it smells amazing, it’s just not the fragrance for me. It might be for you, however. 🙂

I was lucky enough to know this kind of smell since my early childhood. It is the smell of cheap citrus soaps. We had them around and they were plentiful. And they smell 100% like this, there are no added nuances to Colonia Essenza.
Unfortunately, once you’ve known a cheap soap that smells like this, you could never call this is a masterpiece.
All in all, it is an old school citrus fragrance, mature and clean. Nothing like modern citrus fragrances.
Crowd that likes Habit Rouge EDT should give this a try, but I think HR is a better fragrance.
The projection is very strong and has a good lasting power.

A typical citrus Russian leather cologne.
This take has been done millions of times specifically for men, or let’s say unsecured me who would go repetitive than risk it or even wear a thing they love and afraid people will complain bout them.
Lemon, neroli, vetiver, cedar, geranium, and the rest of the ususal common masculine fragrance crew.
“Neroli Portofino Forte” by Tom Ford
“4711 Original Eau de Cologne” by Maurer & Wirtz

Very nice in opening, it’s fresh , citrus, and I can feel fresh neroli. Unfortunately later in heart It becomes insipid, soapy and not very fresh as on the beginning. It reminds me shaving foam . More I wait less interesting it is. I would review as a good smell as opening is breathtaking.

This is a supreme fragrance that has amazing longevity and sillage. I sprayed it on my hand today morning and at 3.00PM, still it is giving out the the notes of Bergamot, lemon, Tangerine, orange, grapefruit, petit grain, Neroli, cloves and patchouli in the same exuberance.
Magnificent mix with quality ingredients that is very noticeable. There is not even a hint of synthetic mixture and the dry-down is comforting.

This can surely replace more than a dozen other fragrances due to the combination of value creation it has made here.Very versatile for almost all the occasions in all seasons. This reminds me of my recent pleasant memories in Milan,Venice,Rome. Surely a true portrayal of Italy and its authentic culture. Take a bow Essenza!

Although still a good fragrance, this is another favourite of mine that’s fallen victim to reformulation. Longevity and intensity have decreased but most annoying of all is the loss of it’s warmth. There appears to be more focus on the astringent citrus notes, whereas in my first bottle I could detect more of the softer florals and warmth of the amber.
Had I not had my original bottle then I would think this a great fragrance but it’s hard not to lament the original version when it was one of my favourite fragrances.
    Ho hum!

  44. :

    4 out of 5

Out of a sizeable collection, this is my favourite scent. Essentially, it’s a smooth, masculine, soapy, slightly spice, bright cologne. The (high-quality) ingredients are blended beautifully in Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Essenza. The spices are more herbal, but NOT medicinal or candy-ish.
Initially, you’re greeted with a gorgeous, round, zesty, spicy blast of citrus. The most notable to my nose are bergamot and orange. Underneath, there is a very clear white floral element–with neroli dominating this aspect. At this point, it smells strong, fresh and clean. The rose and jasmine peek through.
In its heart, you smell more spice, more flowers and citrus lingers far in the background. A very gentlemanly heart is present in Essenza.
Finally, it dries down to a more musky-soapy-herby-spicy goodness. A modern take on a classic cologne.
This is an incredible scent, and exudes pride and gentle masculinity. This is worn perfectly in summer and spring. However, it has its time in the winter too, considering the spice and musk.
It lasts for about 9 hours on my skin, with 3 hours of projection before getting more mellow, and about an additional hour before it becomes a skin-scent. (based on 4 sprays).

Essenza di Colonia by Acqua di Parma is a true testament to classic, timeless scents for men. It has a very pleasing, natural citrus note blended with hints of neroli and jasmine, making it a masculine, alluring scent.
I find that the longevity and sillage of this one is perfectly moderate. At best it can last up to 6 hours on my skin, and can linger on clothes for at least 12 hours. While it’s average in both these categories, it is a compliment getter, and much appreciated by the people around you.
This is a scent for a semi-formal or formal night out. Definitely for the nighttime, and I’d say a colder night in the summer or in the springtime is the perfect time to pull this fragrance. Also perfect for a date where you’re intimate with someone, as the smell doesn’t project that greatly.
8/10 – Expensive and not the greatest scent performance-wise, but true class for someone looking for a formal, timeless scent.

I’ve never been to Italy, so I can’t concur that it’s Italy in a bottle…
Colonia Essenza is a great “Colonia on steroids” – it is powerful, it has decent longevity, it has the backbone of the original.
The sprayer is very generous, so one spray is enough, especially on a hot day.

Essenza is more than a Summertime fresh cologne, it is an all season citrus aromatic fragrance, very versatile.
I get mostly citrus with rosemary and sage. I don’t get any distinct florals.
It is like someone said, a nice bar of soap. Very much like the original Colognia, a bit fresher, like a classic barbershop cologne, nice.
The spice is like licorice or anice which I don’t care for, but some do.
The spiciness and musk make it classy and very wearable.
In that way it’s more than a bowl of fruit, like Fico de Amalfi, which has cleaner more sparkly citrus notes by the way.
A fresh soapy, classy, all season casual.
It does have an Italian vib..
Someone here said it is close to Dior Eau Sauvage, very true.
The Dior is a classic, was John Lennon’s signature fragrance, cleaner better quality notes, greater longevity, and under $60/ 100 ml on eBay.

This is a wonderfully natural, classic, soapy, herbal, warm and rich citrus fragrance bursting with neroli and other traditional Mediterranean citruses, flowers and herbs. I find it also has a slightly animalic/leathery twist which reminds me more of ambergris than the amber listed among the notes.

In the foreground of this delicious summer, scent is a standout neroli note, shadowed by a citrus chorus and floral hints including jasmine and rose. Essenza Colonia exudes summer and will leave you with a refined, post-barbershop aroma…..

This is a really great scent. It ticks all the boxes for me as far as smell, freshness, silage, projection and longevity is concerned, it might not be beast mode but it is above average. The best thing is that the smell is quite unique and gives you a constant feeling of freshness. I definitely get the Neroli notes in abundance. It can be compared to Tom Ford Neroli but only in parts not completely. In the world of scents where there is so many out there which makes it difficult to decide which one to make your signature, for me this one is an extremely strong contender, price wise also this is quite reasonable. Once you have start loving the smell it shouldn’t come as a surprise that you consider buying another bottle and make it a 180ml, I am thinking on the lines right now 

This fragrance is very easy to like. I get a classic citrus with masculine floral (rose I think), but then this fragrances also adds the clean notes of petitgrain and neroli. I pulled the trigger on a full size tester after using two sample spray atomizers. This should serve as a very versatile scent in my collection.

This house continues to impress me. I don’t know what is so special about their products. Is it their simplicity? Or is it the class they put in their bottles? I don’t know, but I just love this brand.
ADP Colonia Essenza is similar to the original ADP Colonia, but with a kick to it. The opening is almost the same, but Essenza has a floral scent to it that the original doesn’t have.
They are both fresh, classy, soapy, and remind me of the times I wasn’t born. They are reminiscent of simple, innocent, and honest days that everyone was nice and kind.
    Highly recommended.

I don’t think “soapy” accurately describes this fragrance because I’ve never smelled soap that smelled like Essenza. And I’ve purchased all different kinds of soaps over the years from mass produced brands to hand crafted. None have ever smelled like Essenza.
I really enjoy this cologne. Longevity is 6-8 hours. Starts off with a great citrus burst that lasts quite a long time. The change during the dry down is very interesting and enjoyable. There’s a constant fresh, clean happy smell. Can a smell be happy? I think so because I get a positive vibe while wearing this fragrance. I find myself occasionally smelling where applied this cologne. Nice citrus vibe, then just a very clean fresh powdery smell during the dry down. I don’t get the “old barbershop” odor that some people find.
There’s some individuals who state that more and more chemicals have been added to the formulation of Essenza over time, but they never provide any evidence. They just state the opinion is based on their “nose”. Acqua Di Parma is known for quality ingredients and I don’t think that has changed. This is my signature cologne here in sunny Florida and it’s great for work, out on the town, and all year round. I just love this cologne and think it’s worth the price.

ADP Essenza is a supreme fragrance that should not be ignored. A terrific Italian fragrance by a century old Italian house.

This was purchased as my wedding day fragrance 5 years ago, and was also my introduction into the world of what I considered ‘luxury’ fragrances.
Having being used to purchasing the designer fragrances of the department stores, this was a breath of fresh air to my senses.
I tried ‘Aventus’ ‘Hermes’ and some others but was not that impressed straight off.
This is the one that grabbed my attention so I purchased it.
I had to wait months before using it but it’s a beauty.
It may not appeal to all because it is floral/ citrus to my nose, but give it a try.

    Stunning Eau de Cologne…
Now, I think this is an updating/repackaging of the original Acqua di Parma Colonia. Essenza di Colonia feels like a slight twist on that original theme. I find it appealing and elegant.
It lasts a good while, but not for the entire day (which is to be expected, as this is still very much an eau de cologne concentration). The balance of citrus and herbs is of the quality you would expect for this company. Made to a very high standard and with refined elegance.
However I feel that this does not add anything new to the game. Whilst it is refined and smells expensive, we know that this is a well trodden path. That being said, it is a good one for your money if you know what to expect. I would recommend sampling first. It may be just me, but I have smelled this kind of thing in many incarnations, however it is still worthy of purchase just for the quality alone. I do recommend it for formal and smart casual wear, as a daily fragrance. Really good stuff!
