Description

Ferrari is launching a new, powerful and sensual fragrance for men – Essence Oud. Creator’s wish was to compose the new fragrance and make it powerful, strong, wild, but also very precious and unusual. Elegant and attractive flacon design is accentuated perfectly in dark red color (known as Rosso Maranello) and decorated with a stopper with a robust wooden ring lacquered in red color.

This direct and strong new fragrance will be a favorite to those men who prefer dynamic and intense aromas. Oud or agar is placed in center of attention and is surrounded with olibanum and elemi resins, spicy accords of cumin and saffron, ad seductive rose. A base is enriched with deep, hot notes of labdanum and leather leaving an animalistic trail. From the very beginning to the closure – the composition is embroidered with notes of precious oud from Arabia.

Ferrari Essence Oud was created with a wish to transfer deep, powerful and loud accords of the composition that will remind us of the sound of Ferrari car engine with its strength. Dark red color skillfully accentuates it and connects with Ferrari Four models, while a light logo of a horse on the bottle suggests tradition and character of the edition. The fragrance is available as 10 and 100ml EDT.

Essence Oud was launched in 2012. The nose behind this fragrance is Nathalie Feisthauer.

There is a “big bang” at the beginning of Essence Oud by Ferrari, a bold step on the ignition pedal, and VROOOOM!!! it’s all downhill from there. I think a lot of the oud purists are reacting negatively to the adulteration of the natural oud by the ambiguous “leather” notes. This is a rosey/oudey/leathery ordeal that is nothing more than a few quick spins around the racetrack, but it’s fun. Teenagers may actually get laid with this, who knows. The solid, red metallic bottle is a work of art.

This is a very different fragrance for me. If you look at my fragrance wardrobe. I don’t have many ouds, but I have smelled quite a few. The oud in this is very subtle and refined. Upon initial spray, this fragrance smells like a stomped out campfire to me. Very harsh and potent. Let it settle down a bit and the cherry sweet rose comes out with the oud to give it some class. The smokiness is coming from the resins, not the oud. The leather is also a main player in this composition.
This fragrance has amazing projection and longevity. I get around 12 hours with this one and around 4 or 5 of those being decent to strong projection. With that being said, spray this about an hour before you leave the house unless you want to smell like a campfire.
Overall, I like it. I don’t love it. The main problem I have with this fragrance is that it is so smoky that it is hard to wear. Might pair well with a suit or leather jacket. That is about it.
@Mopinto you cannot expect a fragrance in this price range to contain real oud. 95% of all oud, even in some niche brands, is synthetic. Real oud is very pricey. Just take it for what it is 🙂

Upon initial spray this can be a very polarising scent and may be a turn off. Let it settle and it becomes what it’s meant to be. It’s very luxurious as many rose and oud combos are to me. I don’t feel this will be a very versatile fragrance for me as I can only see myself wearing this at very formal suit occasions. A couple of sprays and you’re done, don’t go overboard. The oud is light here, the main player is definitely the rose. It’s a mature scent, for men over 30. Can be unisex too. Sample before you buy, though cheap enough to blind buy.
Like the rest of the Essence line, the bottle and cap is top notch!

This fragrance had been highly rated and commented on by Fragrantica reviewers here, but this was not a good blind buy for me – has a cherry note that is annoyingly persistent and unnecessary, and is too sweet for me to wear in the workplace. Not the woody-like scent that I thought it would have. Nevertheless, I appreciate the fact that the fragrance was a carefully considered creation, as with all fragrances made. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess … Do not blind buy this one.

It’s not a pungent Oud. Most of what you will smell is Elemi and Rose in the opener. The oud comes out 20 minutes after.
You WILL be turned off if you stick your nose into the initial spray if you don’t like sweet scents.
    8/10.
Not a masculine workplace scent due to the rose and sweet scents that linger.
    But great for formal venues.

I have tried alot of oud labeled fragrances, none in the top as far as expense. Most for sure are not genuine oud, no doubt. I won’t do a tug of war with the “experts”. This fragrance is a good one at a really good price. It is certainly a keeper for me and I will rebuy when it is empty. Thank you Ferrari, this one in my book ranks a definite winner.

A better version of something like Black is Black Modern Oud, which is a great cheapie for $9.99, is Ferrari Essense Oud. Like BIBMO, it smells somewhat like baby powder to my nose as a whole, but has better-smelling ingredients, leathery notes and a boozy, fermented note in the opening that is unlike anything I’ve smelled before. It’s even yummy. I don’t get the rose, but I do get the incense (of the quality kind, not the stick variety), the leather (new jacket), and the oud (dark, woody, weird note). You smell any decent oud fragrance and you’ll notice it. It sticks out. You can’t miss it!
That boozy note reminds me somewhat of an opening note in Paco Rabanne 1 Million Prive, which I own, but it’s less sweet and thicker. This smells better than the $35 I spent on it. I can put my nose on my arm and inhale deeply many times without getting nauseous like with other fragrances, and it doesn’t get harsh or annoying. This is a well-blended fragrance in my opinion.
Sillage and projection is average. Duration time is good. Takes a while to become a skin scent. Is it a safe blind buy? Only to adventurous noses, IMHO. I think it’s an acquired taste. But honestly, if I was a woman and I smelled this on a man, I’d certainly like it. It exudes class. Thanks for reading. God bless you greatly!

    @TonyAKAMrClez
Have you ever smelled Dehn al oud ? ( Pure oud oil )
Try to get your nose on some and you will understand my reaction.
BUT , the oud you are talking about may be the one that is burnt ( bakhour ) and then I would agree on that, but it is veery light, too much light, and we can’t smell it because of all the resins.
PS: Oud oil and burnt oud doesn’t smell the same thing at all 😉

@OudSan, if you ever make it to the drydown, this is most assuredly oud! You may not notice it because it’s hidden by the resins in the beginning, but the oud is actually the longest lasting note, and that’s all you’ll smell after the 15 hour mark or so. And to everyone else, yes, this scent DOES last THAT long!!!

Annoying scent. This is not oud, but olibanum and elemi based fragrance.
Stop voting for notes you can’t recognize !!!!

Alright you guys, I was rereading reviews for another fragrance and the thumbnail for this flanker caught my eye…so I clicked! Your reviews convinced me to wishlist the previous two fragrances I was going to purchase so I could purchase this one instead! I can’t recall the last time I’d blind bought a fragrance after reading your reviews and been disappointed! I’ll hopefully also be heaping my praise as well in 4 to 7 business days! Thanks for your insights!

own 2 bottles of this..my signature scent..the rose smell complements the oud very well in my opinion..i got several compliments from my male colleagues..the female not so much..maybe the oud not so popular for them..do blind buy it,i can assure you won’t regret it..

    LOVE LOVE this!!!
Its Daring to the western world. I wear this to the Office here in Oz in winter.
It enters BEAST mode and you only need minimum sprays.
A very unisex Frag, which my Wife says its a little feminine.
Rose is what i get most, mixed with Oud and Incense as it dries down. I must say it is just superb, if you like Rose, at this price id recommend trying. Its a very middle eastern vibe thats outside the square. Defintely for fragheads that can wear a fragrance with confidence.

I would have never guessed its price tag!! [if it was made by Tom Ford it would sell x10 in price]
Very strong rose smell and oud [rose>oud at times].
Takes around 20 minutes to settle… Good longevity and average projection.
This perfume will definitely get people’s positive attention!!!!
    Very very happy!!!

Oud is the scent of the agarwood tree that has been infected by a specific type of fungus – and the result of this death and decay is a basalmic, animalic, earthy, powerful, and slightly sweet scent that is traditionally used in Middle Eastern perfumery. In the past decade, oud has become incredibly popular in Western perfumery as well, especially with the likes of Tom Ford’s Oud Wood. This particular fragrance by Ferrari (the car company) is basically a beginner’s oud, as it is not so animalic or in-your-face as others, but is more of a pleasant chocolatey gourmand type. By no means is this a weak fragrance – it’s one of the strongest I’ve ever smelled, and anything more than 3 sprays is overdoing it. It starts off with a strong smell of oud with rose and saffron. This is a slightly dark (yet sweet) masculine fragrance but I could see some women wearing it. On the drydown within an hour the rose becomes more faint while the oud is paired with some sort of smoky, sweet basalmic resins; the combination together very much smells like chocolate, but with hints of rose and saffron. Deeper in the drydown (after about 3 hours), the rose becomes more prominent again oddly. I typically don’t like fragrances like this, but I really enjoy it for some reason. Sillage is strong with this so it’s perfect for wintertime as the scent will penetrate through cold winter air (but not suitable for summer at all as it would get cloying), while longevity is also strong, projecting loudly for the first 5 hours, and then continuing with less projection, with over 8 hours in duration overall. This is one of the strongest fragrances I own in fact, and affordable as well. The bottle – like the rest of the Ferrari Essence perfume line – is also amazing, looking like a red Ferrari car (even the cap has rubber tire-like tracks on it!). I would try smelling oud first before buying this or another oud-based fragrance because it’s different from mostly everything in the Western fragrance palate.

Even if I’m not a fan of balsamic fragrances, I’m happy that I bought 100ml of this for 20 eur. For some occasions it fits perfectly and the longevity is incredible. For me 100ml is a life time juice, because I use it rarely, but if you like balsamic smell, then this is a must have, while you can find it easily and for low price.
    Longevity 10/10
    Silage 10/10
    Versatility 6/10
Scent quality 10/10 (as others said smells like 200$ frag)

Ordered a sample and instantly loved it! Amazing fragrance, beautiful rose and oud, strong but with a crisp, fresh notes (olibanum?) – you can buy this under $20 for 100 ml!!! This smells like $200 niche, absolutely amazing!

I’m 8 hours in to a good application of this and can still smell it as I move around. In my opinion, this frag takes a good hour or so before it calms down, smelling more of rose than Oud for that time. I would suggest applying at least 30 mins before you actually want feedback from people. My wife’s comment after freshly applying (around 5 mins later, approx) was “It’s OK, I guess”. I love how it smells after that extended dry down but Jury is out for me for the initial application. Maybe I will get use to it, as this is a new fragrance for me.

With an uncharacteristically cool spring here in the Midwestern USA, I’m reaching for this scent more and more often and loving it more each time. For the price (currently $25) you simply cannot do better in this category. This scent is on par with many $150+ niche fragrances in this category and worth experiencing for any oud rose lover. The heavy oud dry down is one of the most realistic I’ve experienced, however you’d never see it coming from the initial resin heavy scent of this fragrance. By all means, this is blind buy worthy and likely one I’ll keep in my collection so long as it’s available.
Ferrari Leather Essence and Silver Essence are the best “mainstream” offerings from the brand, but this is probably the best offering for fragrance enthusiasts and possibly the best offering overall. Excellent scent, excellent notes, and excellent performance.

Blind bought this and I was not disappointed. I would say that it rose is definitely more prominent than oud, but I the oud does compliment the rose quite well.
Smells more expensive than it is (25$), and at the price alone I would really recommend if you like masculine rosy, smoky, wood fragrances. If you blind buy and don’t like it I’m sure you could find someone to take it off your hands.

Blind bought as I was looking for my first oud rose combo. This definitely fits the bill. It’s smoky and a little sweet as the rose makes itself known, but it’s mostly oud and that smokiness that I get. It’s fairly linear, not very subtle but not extremely loud either, very oriental vibe. I get a 3 foot projection for a good 4/5 hours. Longevity is excellent, especially on clothes, and it lasts 8h+. It could be unisex according to my girlfriend, ut I’m not completely sure about it. Age: 30+, for evenings, not for work IMO.
Overall, a quality scent perfect to get into oud scents, it performs pretty well for the price tag.

I believe it has already been said but nontheless I’d like to stress it: it’s in the same league and among the best of the designer high-end range, to say, Dior Homme Intense, Tom Ford Noir, YSL M7 (new), etc…
Top notch quality from the bottle itself to the juice inside; the only complaint I could make is the aromachemical of amber (ambrox) that I detect towards the heart and base of the fragrance but it’s thankfully tamed by the use of a smooth leather note whichs roundes the edges quite well. Great composition.
    ——————————————————–
Edited score: I’m resting half point because the rose/oud combo isn’t the most unique thing as being launched in 2012

just had a sample of this and i quite like it,im not good at notes so can only be very general, its fairly unusual, long lasting,a little sweet and also boozy,i feel its a bit of a cross between ck dark obsession and pure malt,im not sure im going to get a full bottle, but its reasonably priced and good value.

Wow… Very few moments in life when you actually really want to say that.
The other time I said WOW was when I blind bought MFK Oud and the scent was just so great and different to me. This does remind me strongly of it but with an added hint of rose and all of that goodness coming in a little red Ferrari bottle… I just cannot believe it! It is actually a bit more potent than that.
Performance has been ok so far. I have only had it for 2 hours so I don’t really know but a 50ml bottle for £15 is crazy when compared to a 70ml MFK Oud bottle for £195. It’s not a beastly scent but I have to trial it further.
It smells like a niche offering. The bottle is quite nice too and so is the feel of it and then you spray and… I need to try this out properly but so far so good!

To me, this smells like roses and candle light! This is the scent of the centerpiece on the table of a romantic dinner.
Also, @OldChef, @edgeofscenty – You guys aren’t alone, I’ve worn this to bed a few times myself! It’s the perfect scent to wear to bed. It also lasts a long time on the pillow case afterwards, up to 3-4 days or so.
It starts out rosey with a heavy resinous presence ( mostly elemi resin, backed by olibanum and labdanum), then within an hour, the oud starts to come out. The middle of its life is when it’s most balanced, while the final dry down is sweet smoky oud, just a tad dirty in the best way. This is a very western take on the traditional middle eastern rose oud, but the LIFE of this scent is much more dramatic/interesting than most others in this category! The last waft of this scent smells nothing like the first, and it lasts for upwards of over 12 hours!
In a prefect world, with no stress, no worries, no problems, this would be a real contender for being my signature scent. It might be “unusual” to some, but it’s certainly pleasant to everyone.
This is another hit from Ferrari! It’s quite the surprise to get such amazing scent quality and uniqueness out of some of these Ferrari scents. Don’t be afraid to try these just because of their name and price!
Also – while I’ve expressed discontent with the painted bottle style being tacky before, I will say, that the paint job on this bottle DOES indeed look like car paint. I still wish all of the bottles were clear glass with colored leather, like the Ferrari Leather Essence bottle, but the deep red paint job on this bottle matches its scent quite well.

lovely, sensuous and not too expensive.
Rose (surrounding the oud) really does the trick here. Smells like a million dollars. Restrict to colder months. For summers, Mont Blanc Individuel is the king.

It’s typical oud-rose, oriental scent. I choosed this based on reviews, but to me not as sweet as I waited and other said. The top is masculine strong oud, later smells rosy, well balanced with the oud. The base is more feminine or unisex at least. The sillage, longevity is moderate on my skin. I recommend for the older crowd or who loves oriental scents.

Amazing scent. You do get the Rose but it’s not overwhelming or feminine. It does remind me of the Ysl oud absolu with the addition of rose.
The longevity is also quite impressive.

Full of Oud and long lasting.
Once you have sprayed the perfume, then you will get the sensation is like being in a room whose walls were made of oud and furniture / meubelair also made of oud. Amazing!
Oud is middle east style scent which showing manly and mighty person. Oud fragrance is very typical and strong so it is suitable for the hot weather in middle east.
I do not know why Ferrari choose the red color for the bottle. I think it is better if the bottle is in black, gold, and brown.

I’m an Indian guy, we have always had different types of Oud perfumes/oils in my home, some smells creamy/thick (Boss Bottled Oud) and some earthy/grassy oud.
    But
this Is AMAZING!!!, Spicy/Smoky/Oud which you will smell the same from the youth until it’s maturity.
Let me make it simple how this smells like, Bakhoors are type of wood based oud which can be used by burning like incense. Imagine the Oud wrapped up in Spices being burned and all the smoke engulfs you.

  43. :

    5 out of 5

Quite a linear and inoffensive rose-oud dorminant perfume.
Maybe the best offering from Ferrari house and the most lay-low rose-oud perfume on the market that I’ve found yet. I think it would be more appropriate or accurate if the name replaced by “Essence Rose”, since the rose vibe is much bolder than the oud. And I found the same phenomenon that I cannot detect any leather. Well, since I dislike leather vibe, that is so applausable.
For sure, the oud in this perfume is synthetic, but you cannot expect too much on a perfume priced below $200 that comes with total natural/expenseive oud for you. As some guys in here or BN have mentioned, this one along with Versace Oud Noir, Montale, Mancera, and even AdP Oud are all using synthetic oud materials… However, this is still a good choice since the price is no more than $60 on eBay.
Although it is very subtle, or say inoffensive, but it lasts for 6+ hours. (Tested in Summer, about 30 degree centigrade indoor.)Rating: 7.0/10

This is one of the safest oud scent; the sweet type of oud. As there are plenty of oud scents that I have tried and I was even nauseated of some, this one brilliantly plays as an all-rounder, all-season oud scent. The aroma is quite distinctive too, unlike any other oud-rose combo in the market.
Now now, don’t be afraid to put this one into your shelves, people. While it is true when some people out there said that Ferrari Essence Oud lacks dynamics (linear, in other word), it is maturely blended and retains the luxury feel oud scents have.
As for the performance, it is quite linear as I stated above. Projection is good, and the longevity is a beast, especially if you spray it to your shirt. It is an EDP after all.
My experience with Ferrari Essence Oud has been quite good as well. I got plenty of compliments with it, and “branded” as a nice, warm guy while wearing it. I live in a tropical country, and this perfume still does its job astoundingly.
Thumbs up for this Rosso Corsa colored EDP!

SPECTACULAR. The florals in this fragrance blends absolutely beautifully together with the wood and leather. The Rose is the predominant floral, it resembles the rose insence from Gonesh. 3 seasons scent, maybe on a cool rainy summer day it would be fine but more so for Fall, Winter and early Spring. One spray was sufficient for me, it lasted 8 hrs, it was in the summer evening as I just received it and wanted to try it. Dsquared Royal Black has a competitor now… Lol…. They both have their place in my life.

Ferrari Essence Oud is a very nice rose, oud, earthy, powdery blend. I enjoy the oud presentation in this frag. It is not animalic or dirty at all. I compare it to the oud in Dirty English for Men by Juicy Couture only this one is less synthetic. This oud also persists into the dry down. I find that this is very well blended. I haven’t worn this in the summer yet but I’m guessing it will be a little fumy in the heat with the kind of scent profile that it has. I’ll update later in the summer season. The thing that I enjoy the most out of this is the rose. I don’t like a lot of rose based frags but this is one that I can wear. It is definitely a masculine rose. Earthy rose-ish powdery is something that I really like. It definitely smells differently on the skin than it does in the air. I’m glad to have this in my collection.
    Chopshop rating: 8.7/10

This begins with quite a bit of “medicinal oud” (which is sweet) and dry woody/leathery quality. That oud quality dissipates more than the dry woodiness over the first hour or two. There’s also fruitiness as well as dry/powdery rose element that is more noticeable perhaps half an hour in. From there it dissipates slowly over time. It reminds me of Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather more than anything else, though not a “clone.”
UPDATE: I think of this as a leather scent more than anything else. As time goes by that is the more and more the most obvious element to me.

SUPERB! This is one of the best blind buys I have ever made. I do not have a frag testers nose, but I know what I like, and I got just what I expected! The bottle is finished to look like a beautiful, quality, automotive, paint job.
The top resembles a leather-wrapped shift lever and the spray top is very precisely metered. Quality all the way!
Scent-wise this reminds me of Comme Des Garcon’s Avignon, but is much better and definitely cheaper. It opens for me with a very strong but pleasant wood(more like cedar pencil shavings to me). There is definitely an incense note as well. It finishes with a very nice woody, sweet, almost vanilla vibe.
Longevity is longer than average for me(six to ten hours easily) and maintains a decent projection throughout.
If you like Avignon, you should love this, and as I said it is much less expensive.
    Hope this helps. JB.

I got a sample of this in the mail. It’s the first Ferrari fragrance I’ve ever smelled, and really the first oud I’ve tried. After I’ve had it on for about 20 minutes I’m not getting any rose, which is good for me. I love saffron, labdanum and the other notes, and while it’s resinous, it’s not too much. I like it, but probably wouldn’t buy a full bottle since it’s not something I’d wear on a daily basis.

I found this fragrance to be quite subtle as far as agar wood is concerned. It’s a light scent with a big emphasis on fresh roses with a hint of Oud for a woody balance. I can’t say I am in love with this fragrance but I do find it pleasant at the least.

This line would be the niche of the house.
Ferrari Oud is really a distinctive scent, its medicinal and woody at the opening with intense oud, and roses around, giving a lemonade and also with a floral air and somewhat bitter.
Later I feel like a short circuit, I think elemi do so, making it drier and resin and kind of smoky, if were woods burning, with a chord rubberized and little sweet, I believe it is the saffron showing its facets.
But what closes with golden key is the presence of leather, involving the entire fragrance in a comfortable and more sober aurea, a really complex and very good scent.

As a newbie to oud, this is a very good ‘beginner oud’.
Whilst in Oman, the taxi drivers used resins and oils to fragrance their cars. At the time I did not know what oud, and in fact other resins, smelled of. Ferrari Essence Oud is pretty much the scent of the taxi. I remember thoroughly enjoying my taxi rides, mainly because of the wonderful scent they used!
Back to the fragrance. An enjoyable scent to wear, somewhat heavy so perhaps best suited to colder times, longevity is good, not as long-lasting as some have mentioned (on my skin, anyway) and projection is moderate-to-good.
My first Ferrari and oud scent is, overall, a winner.

IMO the best Ferrari fragrance I ever smelled.
Perfect fragrance as the rose is not too strong nor dirty (I don’t like that too much) in the oud-rose combo but soft and a little powdery and also the oud itself does not scream neither smells medicinal or band-aid like. Fragrance lasts through the day with perfect sillage, evolves a lot and ends up after about 10-12 hrs with a very nice, dry and powdery leathery labdanum smell that actually smells a bit like the main smell of Davidoff Leather blend, which is an excellent leather fragrance! Really love this stuff!

Ferrari essence Oud is an Italian take on the Rose Oud combination. As such, if you are used to middle eastern and south asian attar blends, this is slightly different and in a good way. The Oud note in this is not overpowering and there is none of that band aid medicinal smell that most of these synthetic oud frags have. The rose is a heavy, powdery note and the leather is soft and I get the saffron and elemi resin, which I think is the strongest note. Blended quite nicely and for once, when they say EDP, they really mean it. 1 spray to the base of my throat is all I need and it lasts all day. Projects in a 4-5 foot radius for a long time as well. Wore it for a family dinner and my mum was like ” How much did you spray?” I told her one spritz and she did not believe me. She liked the smell, just saying it might be a good idea to put this one on a couple of hours before stepping out tp let it air out a bit coz it really does get up people’s noses. Bravo ferrari for going all out, they really supercharged this one.Good value for money as my Full Bottle should probably last me the rest of my life.
The brute strength of the frag almost instantly relegates it to statement maker/ occasion category. Sorry, no office unless you want to annoy the Boss, no gym, no beach, etc but formal clothes, air conditioned atmosphere or winter weather, 1 spritz only, it is a showstopper. Lots of compliments. Love it. 8.5/10

i sampled 4 of the Ferrari line. This was my favorite. There’s many ways to do Oudh, but this was sweet animal musk to me. It had that musty sweet honey saffron vibe the whole way down, softened with Rose. There is leather, but it’s more of a fresh factory leather that’s been bathed in leather conditioners and cleaner. So there is a chemical vibe that’s akin to “new car.”
Quite classy take i must say. I noticed this sweet mustiness, that really is like the Elemi resin note in Playboy Hollywood. Faint citrus in that one.
    I’m impressed with this line.
    Projection: moderate
Longevity is the best of this line. Lasted all day on hot Florida summer. softens to a powdery sweet Rose.

This is my new signature scent…a true edp indeed…70% alc
lasts for about 24hrs plus its really oily too. matured sweet rose+oud+leather…very potent stuff.
I really think this is way better than many Eau De Parfums from mainstream and niche designers out there and can compete head to head with them.

I find it to be mild. More leather and saffron than rose and oud which is not a bad thing. Performance is average and not beastly on my skin. It can compete with Fendi Assoluto and M7 Oud Absolu but can’t compare to most niche oud offerings. Worthy of sampling but I won’t be getting a bottle.
