Description

Gucci Envy appeared on the perfume- scene in 1997 and became one of the most interesting products launched by the house of Gucci. Envy could be compared to a breeze that brings spring into the city. Its architecture is modern; it denies gaudiness, accentuating minimalism.
The composition starts with green notes with a cool metal note that freezes the senses. Gradually the scent warms up due to woody notes and musk. This metal accord surrounded by a floral bouquet became very popular during the 90’s. The notes are Hyacinthus, lily of the valley, rose, jasmine, green notes, magnolia, iris, woods and musk. The nose behind this fragrance is Maurice Roucel.

Gucci Envy has stolen the hearts of many fragrance lovers for decades because it truly is one of the best, and timeless Lily-of-The-Valley and Hyacynth floral fragrances ever, that was created in a classic way of style and QUALITY. This is THE ONLY fragrance that I can recognize its scent IMMEDIATELY on ANYBODY! It has THAT unique smell, created with the most unique RATIOS of all the most COMMON notes found in many perfumes that have set this fragrance apart as one of a timeless masterpieces.
Yes, all these separate notes are not anything out of this world, but the way they got incorporated in Gucci Envy has helped contributing in giving the brand a respected reputation among other famous and competitive houses. When talking about Gucci fragrances, you just cannot NOT mention Gucci Envy! And it still lives up to its name: an envy of many fragrances!
Gucci Envy EDT is the one that I would bring to my grave!

Since I wasn’t interested in perfume in the 1990’s, I can amuse myself today by discovering “vintages” of the recent past, like Gucci Envy. I love green notes in perfumes, from the original Cellier Vent Vert to 1970’s greens such as No. 19, Givenchy III, Aliage, and so when I read that Envy was a worthy green perfume, I picked up a bottle a few years ago. Prices for Envy are going up and up since its discontinuation, but I found a good deal on the parfum, which comes in a beautiful, sleek atomizer.
And Envy has definitely earned its place among my green vintages. The published note lists are perplexing so I will just try to describe what I smell. Galbanum, of the chalkiest and smokiest kind, LOTV, fresh cut grass, and cilantro. A number of reviewers here with reliable noses describe Envy as a sweet green floral, and yet I get no sweetness at all in the parfum, just the slightest fruity undertone of melon. Perhaps the EDT and EDP are sweeter?
The most intriguing aspect of Envy parfum is its green-tinged muskiness, via the cilantro/cumin note, which would seem poised to deliver the erotic impact promised in the ads, but somehow does not, since it always remains a vegetal musk, rather than a fleshy one. After wearing Envy parfum a few times, and being nagged by a strong sense of déjà vu, I finally realized that Envy is very reminiscent of vintage Coriandre, another favorite vintage green (comparing parfum to parfum formulations).

I’ve heard Envy was a grape vine flowers soliflore.
Grape vine blossom has a very pleasant delicate scent which is not similar to any other fragrances – something like linden + ether + aspartame sweetnes + orange? + wintergreen. It slightly resembles White Musk by Body Shop but is greener.
I do detect grape vine blossom in Envy, but it is heavier, and more wax-y, not so fresh as in the nature. Like a grape vine blossom scented candle.

This is the most uplifting perfume for me.
Spring flower garden in the morning, very wet lily of the valley.
Must have for special occasions nowadays since I am running out, and it would cost a fortune to replace it! sad, very sad…

It was my first real perfume when I was around 18. Now I am 36 and have never found so good perfume anymore. I miss it every single day.
Gucci, hurry up! It´s time to create it again!

Gucci doesn’t care about their customers. They don’t reply for any messages… I don’t even know if there is any way to contact them ? So many people cry over their discontinued fragrances and they don’t give a f***.

Stunning perfume! It reminds of me big green garden filled with colorful flowers, big trees and also happy days, warm family memories, childhood… But such a shame it is discontinued!

But yet it’s such a shame that they discontinued this beauty! Elegance and Classy but nothing to Envy”

Gucci Envy was my signature perfume at the university. I bought a big 100 ml bottle and often people asked me what I was wearing because was classy, green and easy.
I add my voice to the choir: Gucci bring back ENVY!

  17. :

Gucci Envy used to be my signature scent. It is absolutely breathtaking and nothing quite like it on the market today. It is fresh but luxurious at the same time, very very recognizable but in this case it’s not a bad thing. I wish Gucci would bring it back one day, it’s a shame that a scent like this is discontinued.

Gucci Envy, to me just one of many really, seams simular to Ralph Lauren Glamorous, also discontinued. I see a 30ml for 199€- crazy prices!!
Would gladly swap mine for something else..

I was given a big bottle of this for Christmas several years ago, and initially I really liked it, but after a while, for some reason, it started to irritate me. So I shoved it to the back of my perfume collection and haven’t touched it for a couple of years. I hauled it out yesterday and dusted it off. It’s still pretty, but it’s very white-flowery on me – I don’t get any pineapple or rose or sandalwood or pretty much any of the other notes. And I think I’ve figured out why it irritated me – a) the white flowers take over after half an hour or so, b) after four hours it had mostly disappeared and c) what was left took on a rather sharp, almost-but-not-quite sour green edge. Sillage was very weak as well. I’m going to try layering it with something else to see what happens, as I the first half hour of this is rather lovely. If anybody has any suggestions, I’d be happy to try them.

Gucci Envy’ why discontinue this Beaut! Sexy green fresh and crushed florals..amazingly memorable. What a shame Gucci..please come back! Gucci Envy

Crushed dandelion stems, oozing green and astringent juices; grassy citrus, zesty and dry. A light, young, fresh lily note without the slightest indolic roundness. The first 20 minutes define a ‘green’ scent. Then slowly, a mellow lightly musky note creeps in. A dusty vetiver, light wood and sandal, a tiny hint of rose. Individual notes are rather indistinct, the overall composition goes from bright green to shadowed woody green. Too sharp for my taste, even with the more mellow drydown; sillage was modest, longevity ~4 hours.

  22. :

    3 out of 5

This “old school” complicated, but in a good way, scent is very very 90s. It’s converted to elegant and evening usage for me. mufulia describes the initial notes correctly, but it graduates to a mild powdery yet creamy floral/fruit hybrid than it finalizes into a musk that is very tolerable.

  23. :

Gucci, what have you done? Discontinuing this perfume was NOT an option! There is virtually nothing on the market now that can compare. The closest I’ve come to such an exquisite smell is with Ck One: nice, but too obvious, not delicate, smells like evergreen car freshener. Armani Aqua di Gioa: meh. Just plain old cool, but like ice left in the freezer too long. Shisheido Zen: blah, should have gone easier with he sweet citrus. like dollar store orange candy. Versace Eros: very , very nice, but where is the pineapple? I think this is the note that sets Envy apart. I can’t seem to find a scent that is at once fresh, spicy, floral and a tad sweet. Perfect equilibrium. I just want it all… How, oh, how will I ever replace my Gucci Envy?

  24. :

    3 out of 5

This one gives me headache every single time… It’s too intense, as in intensely green

  25. :

    3 out of 5

(If anyone wants to try this, happy to swap a decant for my want list.)
The words “fresh spicy” always scare me – it reminds me of perfumes like Gucci Envy. I enjoy green scents, but fresh airy green with a hint of sweetness, never spicy green. This one is too strong for me.

  26. :

    3 out of 5

Ooooh, I was into the greens in the early 2000’s! This one was my favourite greeny! While I’m more into the warmer scents – the gourmands and oriental florals now, Envy still owns a special spot.
While smelling it today, I notice a lot more pineapple than I had before. And the peach…. More fruity than I remember it. Yet, beautifully fresh (bergamot is working hard here) with some feminine prettiness thrown in for good measure.

This is such an easy to like fragrance. It reminds me of a more grounded, younger Diorissimo with the Lily of the Valley and the aromatic green smell. So lovely.
Someone I worked with years ago wore this in my first office job, and on her it always smelled sunny and almost tropical. I never did buy it back then but now as it is so scarce, I feel like I should have.
I think this is fresh, sexy, very wearable by all sorts of people and just very easy on the nose. I do love it.

  29. :

This is a fragrance which withstands the test of time.
My first experience with it was in the form of a rollerball tester over 10 years ago. It started green, subdued sour green giving me the impression of juiciness, fresh wet grass. Almost appetizing. The green stayed with me for around 4 hours. There is some faint floral, citrus and woody as time passes.
I am glad that when i re-visit it after 10 years, it smells exactly what i remember it to be. No reformulation.
I like it more now that i have a spray bottle. It gives more sillage than the rollerball. Envy performs well for all weather and season, although i like it the best during summer rainy day. 10 years ago, there were more green fragrance (i had Les Belles de Ricci and Pastel de Gres for example) so Envy wasn’t my favourite. But les belles de ricci and pastel de gres are gone now (or just impossible to find?).
Envy is getting more difficult to find (even on-line) comparing to say 6 months ago.

I wore this scent religously in the 90s. A lucky chance made my sister buy, dislike and give it to me.
First off, the brilliant name says it all…ENVY. Of course its liquid is toxic “green with envy” and kept in a slender glass bottle.
Most striking is the hard Hiacynth-punch in the nose. Or maybe it’s a blend of Hyacinth and the poisonous plant Lily-of-the valley. I feel very self-confident, I’m sharing a desire to have something, I’m envious.

In the late 90s, Envy was the fragrance I would often reach for on a night out, to dinner, clubs, bars, etc. And that’s about 4 nights a week. I don’t really remember how I acquired it. Was it at a department store or at the airport? What decisions went into this purchase? Why can’t I remember any of this? It has only been 18 years.
I can deduce why this was my choice on night outs though…because the other choices in my “perfume armoire” would have been Oscar, Victoria, Chanel 5, Chanel 19, Caleche, Madame Rochas, Miss Dior, Diorissimo, and other classic fragrances that I did not feel would be appreciated by my fellow partiers. And at that time, as a young woman, I wasn’t brave enough to wear scents I was sure would make people talk about how I smelled like an old lady.
I would have to guess that back then, I found Envy to be modern, edgy, and appropriate for my age group. Another reason I wore it at night probably had something to do with Chanel 19 which was what I wore when going to more formal nighttime affairs. I thought, with the similar green juice, and the similar coolness, (as opposed to warm) it exuded similar confidence, elegance, and aloofness as Chanel 19, but with a contemporary and less snobby vibe.
As I sniff what’s left in my bottle today, I can tell the top notes have gone missing. In reading the top notes up there, they are all ones I like, so I can see how I would have liked the blasts as I sprayed. But in looking at the middle notes, I’m also understanding why I just don’t like it anymore. Lily of the Valley is one of the notes I really dislike. I just smell a bunch of green sharp florals now.
It would be helpful for my review if I could get by hands on a fresh bottle to test, but I guess I don’t need to recall that badly how it is that I liked this fragrance. I’ll just move on to all the perfume that are new to me. The perfume choices I have now compared to the 90s is just mind-boggling. Hurray to the Internet, Fragrantica, and perfume choices!

I’ve waited a long time to try this one…totally worth it! Wonderfully, stridently green, with a cool almost metallic vibe to it…Hyacinth, Rose & Lily of the Valley are hand in hand, not fighting each other. Classic & very elegant, I love it.

I just bought a 1 oz. bottle on Zulily. They list new perfumes 2 or 3 times a week. I’ve seen some older ones or discontinued ones here and there. I haven’t had issues with anything I’ve gotten from them.
I actually haven’t tried Envy yet but from the reading the reviews here it sounds like I will like it! I guess if not I will have one up for swap… lol

    My second review of Envy:
I’ve had at least 3 or 4 bottles so far and I have no confirmed information whatsoever as to if it has really been discontinued, except some gossips. All bottles I’ve had looked and smelled exactly the same.
Dior Tendre Poison IS discontinued. So is Armani Sensi. Most probably Paloma Picasso Tentations too… But Gucci Envy which you can get almost everywhere??? Or Gucci Rush??? In every Rossmann and the like?
How can you tell whether a bottle of Envy is a fake or not? What if it smells exactly the same and as long as the previous bottles that I had back in the early 2000’s? What if I bought it at a regular network store and not in an online store? What if the labels at the bottom are the same as they used to be 10 years ago?
The fact that it’s not on the official Gucci website is not too convincing – many houses advertise only the brand new scents they have just released or the most popular ones (e.g. Lancome).
What if there are some respectable online stores (not just amazon or ebay) that offer it constantly? And what if I see it every now and then in real-life stores, such as Superpharm ? Are they all fakes? Even if they are, I don’t care as long as they smell 100% the same – and THEY DO!!! Which is, b.t.w., hardly ever the case with fakes…
I’d be really grateful for any justified information regarding this perfume though, I’m not interested in gossips or urban legends. I just want to know for sure.
Love love love “Envy”, I do intend to buy another bottle and for the time being I see absolutely no good reason for saying “Goodbye” to it. Please show me one, if it actually exists, I’m ready to face the truth!
    Best wishes everyone!

Worth every penny I paid for it on Amazon. Clean and fresh yet strong, the white and purple flowers are a fantastic mix and drydown is musky with Jasmine and Sandalwood yet retaining some florals. This scent for me is an absolute masterpiece. Why Gucci have discontinued it is beyond me. I keep trying to find a replacement but have failed so far.
The longevity is great, lasing all day. It’s class in a bottle.

I’m a tad annoyed of all the reviews on this page for “Envy Me” …. we are talking about “Envy”. The Original, this should be a nostalgic tribute page to “Envy by Gucci”. “Envy Me” is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT perfume.

  46. :

This was one of my ATF’s, whats up Gucci? Why did you discontinue this? I think it was too expensive to manufacture, as newer perfumes are all synthetics. I enjoyed smelling like a fresh cut vine and I’ve been heartbroken for many years! Don’t be a sucker and buy “Gucci Envy” online as those are all FAKES. Gucci STOPPED manufacturing Envy in 2002, so if you do find an authentic bottle it would be at least 13 years old, and unlike wine, perfumes don’t always get better with age.

  47. :

It’s been discontinued for few years since I knew the sad truth.
ENVY is,and will always be my No.1 women fragrance in my life after I tested so many female fragrances.
    It’s elegent,like a smiling lady wailking to u.
It’s devine, like a angel’s touch on your face with warm glow.
It’s relaxing, like playing in your grandmother’s gardon when childhood.
There are so many thing I want to say to praise ENVY,but I can’t,just because so many. And I exactly know if I only have one choice left, then ENVY will be mine.

I like this, it contains some of my favorite notes (lily of the valley, hyacinth, iris) and is green enough to suit me. I haven’t yet worn it enough to decide if I’ll repurchase once my small bottle is gone but it has definitely earned a place among my green florals.

  49. :

Ohh now I understand why my friend brought me Envy me from the USA..
I wasn’t familiar to Envy till recently I tested it a while ago and eww it smelled like …blood. don’t know what possessed me but I got a half used bottle and wow..i remembered I used to have a fake of this in high school with the same box I kept my coins in it:)
im not sure I would call this green it smells very peppery to me-maybe its the woody notes. I will wear this to work and going out I enjoy it a lot mostly because it reminds me of my teenage years but also because its a versatile perfume. Who knows maybe I’ll buy a full bottle one day.

Once I ate this huge Zee Sweet white peach. It wasn’t too sweet, and it was very refreshing. I must be blind but I couldn’t find this brand of peaches being sold here in the supermarkets anymore. Gucci Envy became my craving quencher. It doesn’t smell like a peach would but rather what that peach would taste like. It is not a sweet ripe peach, there is still some crunch and some ‘sparkle’ to it, like a slice of peach in carbonated soda. Of course there’s that lily-of-the-valley, freesia and hyacinth that many people mention, but I’m really here for the peach.
I was in a state of panic, when the shop I have made purchases from over the past 10 years, informed me that Gucci Envy was being discontinued and hence all the Caucasian tourists were buying up the remaining 30 mls by the busload. Initially, I thought it was just a load of crap to get a frenzy started, but as I started to check around in all the physical stores, I realized I couldn’t find any 100 mls. In the end I suckered myself into buying 4 or 6 bottles of 30 mls so that I can douse myself healthily in it for the next couple of years.

Finally managed to pick this up! I LOVE it. I like Envy Me, although I must say, I did buy it for the bottle, but I like it. I don’t love it. But this? This I love! What is a bit strange however, is that I have taken quite a dislike to Envy EDP (the black bottle), so I was a bit scared to try Envy. Now I see why so many women love it! Why they even made flankers for it is beyond me. They pale in comparison. Envy is light in a heavy way. it is a strong scent, but not heavy in the way you would select a heavy perfume to wear out to dinner on a cold winter’s night. It lasts all day on my skin and works well on me. I don’t know what I’ll do when I finish the bottle! It also makes me more eager to try Envy Me 2.

    IT IS NOT DISCONTINUED!!!
Perfect for a sunny spring morning, when a maple tree blooms outside my window with its lovely blossom in the colour of this perfume. Envy encompasses all early spring scents of blossomiog fruit trees – apples, wild apples, cherries, plums and pears, it’s as magical as April itself…

Its nice, but i cant stand it.
I see why people like this scent, But this kind of lilly of the valley which is prominent note. On the borderland beautifully balances the fresh categories and flowers of the meadow. Then there is the green grass, no citrus, and so cool to accept. Hyacinth with cedar and bergamot and again glade with flowers and lawn, all the rest of the mixed ingredients. Pineapple does not go on the lead nor the jasmine either. Perhaps it would have been more interesting if something had dominated, except lily of the valley.
    It is not my type.
Longevity is qiut good, but i had to throw away my sample.

One of the first perfumes I ever bought, my mother fell in love with it too. Though now I find it too sharp for my nose, I have a soft spot for it in my heart.

  64. :

I use to wear this when I was in my early 20’s. It was my go-to summer scent since it was such a fresh, green girly floral. I can still remember the smell of the lily of the valley mixed with the green and slightly citrus notes. Perfect for warm, summer days and nights.

  65. :

    5 out of 5

A beautiful scent, at first I can feel the notes of bergamot and peach, then I detect many flowers, jasmine and violet come together with lily of the valley, with an interesting green touch. In the end I can feel sandalwood, cedar and oak moss, but all very rounded, not a single note calls out more than the others, but all goes together in no haste, an aroma that reminds me of cleanness, something fresh and new. I’d define it as a very sophisticated and chic fragrance. Its longevity is great, sillage is good, it is not invasive and goes well day or night. It’s a pity that concerning its fragrances Gucci has been decaying in both quality and originality, if only they had kept the ones from Tom Ford era they would now be classics and best sellers until today without a doubt.

Gucci Envy is a true unique beauty! I already posted my full review and another post about a similar fragrance but I just had to add to add this because of a new experience I had with Envy.. Well my mother decided to try Envy and she liked it right away, mind you my mother is not big on florals.. But throughout the night I would get a hint of Envy wafting off of my mother and boy did it smell amazing! It was a bit of a different experience from smelling it on my own skin, and a great one at that.. It made me appreciate the beauty of this fragrance even more! Now my mother is an Envy lover also.. This stuff is a modern masterpiece!

I bought Envy during times of University graduation, a day before most important exams.
I passed exams with four excellent marks and three out of four examiners(men!) asked me which perfume I was wearing. The woman didn’t ask)
What can I say, it’s super-classy first of all, elegant and chic. At those days I didn’t classify it as a green fragrance for example – to me it was just a mood. So the mood of Gucci Envy is I WILL DO IT. I will do it with all the confidence and intellegence as I can
I have read so many reviews about Gucci Envy but the mystery is that noone is able to describe it apart that its green-grassy-tasteful-smooth-unique…ENVY.

For Gucci Envy fans! There is a new natural Italian fragrance by the company “Natures”, that smells very very similar to Gucci Envy.. I was so shocked when I smelled it because it smelled nearly identical.. It is cheap, affordable, and there is a whole line of cream, body wash, deodorant, and the EDT.. It goes by the name of “Gelsomino Adorabile” in english ” Adorable Jasmine”.. These products are great quality and natural! Some of the notes are Peach, Melon, Bergamot, Jasmine, Rose, Hyacinth, Vanilla, and White Musk! It is amazing! So close to Envy!

Wore this fragrance sometime ago and just re-visited it because I was given an unopened bottle that a friend had forgotten about……Why did I ever stop wearing this? Envy is a perfect balance of smokiness and clean….How often do you find that combination in a fragrance? Envy stays close to the skin, is strong but non-intrusive and offers great longevity…..it’s a real gem.

I miss this perfume. I couldn’t find this anymore in department stores. So sad, it has been discontinued. Actually, this was my JS prom perfume. I love this perfume so much. Gucci should bring Envy back!

Starts off well enough. On initial spritz, it reminds me of fresh spring flowers.Within a few minutes however, it begins to smell like flyspray. The perfume does not last long

I have been so curious to try this ever since I really fell in love with Envy for men.. It seems that I love fragrances from this time period! They were so unique but modern and sexy.. Well I got myself a little 1.0 ounce bottle and I sprayed one spray on myself just to get to know this Envy.. It sure smells alot different from the men’s version but that is because the composition is completely different.. The men’s is a spicy oriental whereas this is a fresh green floral but I can see why they are counterparts to each other though.. Well it starts out really fresh and has a interesting synthetic like blast in the opening that I find really nice because it is suppose to be there just like the synthetic hairspray note in Rush for women.. I detect some pineapple in the opening but it starts to fade and more and more florals start to come out.. Now I do not have much experience with women’s fragrances so I am not good at distinguishing floral notes but I am learning.. I think I am smelling a lot of lily of the valley, magnolia, hyacinth, and maybe some jasmine.. It is a true green floral, a huge cocktail of florals, many more than the ones I listed.. Once the top notes start to dry down and the florals really start to come out I start to detect this gorgeous metallic vibe that runs throughout Envy.. Maybe it is the lily of the valley, the hyacinth or both together, I do not know but it is so unique and beautiful! Than as it dries down there is a hint of musk while the florals still remain prominent but very fresh and clean.. It did not smell overly feminine on me to the point of not being able to wear it..It is basically all florals but they are blended in such a way that it smells very fresh, clean, but not to over the top feminine, of course only if worn in moderation! I heard that Envy was also inspired after the scent of vines and yes it does resemble fresh cut vines and flowers.. I like it because it smells of perfume and not of fruits, candies, or deserts.. It smells like something from its era, very modern and unique but still smells like perfume and not some type of food or cheap body spray.. It is very classy, sophisticated, sexy, clean, fresh and unique.. Oh I miss the times when Gucci use to make things like this..

Each time I look at my bottle I want to cry.
Why such a beauty was discontinued????
It’s fresh, green, little spicy and sophisticated and ohhh so special to me.
I have so many beautiful memories with Envy.
Envy is not loud, it’s stays close to skin but is extremely longlasting.
Love and I’m finding a good replacement for it but still nothing can compare to my lovely Envy.

One of my “Lucky 4” faves back to the 1995-1999 (Other babies were Eau d’Eden, Salvatore Ferragamo and Ultraviolet). Clean green, light and comfortable fragrance, gave great vibes.

One of my all time favorites, I wore it everyday in the late 90’s for several years. The scent is of clean exotic fresh cut vines. I am so upset that its been discontinued and the prices are skyrocketing for it on ebay. Also be careful of fake Gucci perfumes on Ebay.

It’s so green, smoky, fresh and beautiful. A real sparkly floral with stems included in a smoky hot lake bath. It dries down to a nice floral musk with a little spice and cream. I imagine a misty garden on a spring or summer dusk, the day after it has rained, relaxing in a hot lake with steam emitting from the water. Two sprays will do, nothing more. for days and casual nights out, preferably at the time of dusk, in the Spring, and Early Fall; crowds are welcome.GREEN the color of envy.

One of my regrettable blind buys from TJMaxx in the late 90’s. Let’s say the perfume memory is strong. Very green floral and sharp. One day I will learn my lesson with cedar and what it works well for me with what notes. Cedar + Lilly of the Valley = headache for me. I see now that bergamot and pineapple are notes. That may have contributed to it’s tartness I also perceived. Overall, it was a no for me. It didn’t mesh well with my body chemistry. I gave it away to one of my friends and it worked okay on her.

Finally, I found a perfume kiosk that had a tester bottle. Big floral scent but not nauseating. Fresh and soft green but still staying floral. To me this is an attention getter. Estee Lauder’s Beyond Paradise is floral but cloying and pierc
