Egoiste was the first perfume I bought with my first salary more than 20 years ago.
I kept wearing it until my tastes changed and began exploring this wonderful world of fragrances.
Ten years ago I tested it again and to my disappointment it smelled totally different than the one I loved. I was so sad!
Well it might have been a bad tester because I just came from a perfume shop and their new tester is as gorgeous as the Egoiste I loved.
Mandarin, cinnamon, roses, peach, sandalwood and that lovely vanilla got me into a trance again. It was such a beautiful experience that I came home with a bottle of my first love.
Egoiste is as elegant, mysterious, charming and beautiful as always plus it reminds me of a wonderful time back in my life that I cherish with all my heart.
What a perfect masterpiece from Chanel!
Perfectly suitable for today, smells sweet but not gourmet, classic but never dated, and yes Egoiste smells uptight just as I remember and just as I loved it.
Welcome back my old friend!

I just bought this perfume. I get a pleasant cinnamon and tea note on my skin. definitely quality juice as the rest of the Chanel line

For me, it is in the same category as Habit Rouge. A fragrance for a cultivated and well-mannered gentleman. It is very refined and soft, you would have to have chest hair *before* applying this fragrance. No wonder that some perceive it as a unisex frag.
The profile does not seem to be super complex, but the combination is quite specific and original. Actually, my first impression was “scented christmas candles”, but this kind of first-hand associations tend to wear down quickly, if the fragrance animates you positively on a subconscious level. Which this one does for me.
It gives off a cozy and comforting feeling, almost psychedelically so. It could be a signature scent for a new age religious sect leader. So, you could play it dangerous, if you wanted to.
I guess the main notes for me are tangerine, rose, carnation, vanilla and cinnamon (some kind of citrusy sourness is detectable throughout), but it’s really hard to tell apart the notes, because the impression of the whole is too coherent and strong.

Absolutely amazing and iconic. Truly complex and comforting at the same time. Love the warmth, spices, masculinity, and classic yet not outdated vibe. Not sure if its a “panty dropper” as far as compliments but this one is a timeless classic and a personal favorite that I would always like to own

I tested this twice. Fiancée does not like it that much but I do. Held back a little bit because of the price.
So I was on my commute to the gym this morning, and the guy seated to me was wearing Egoiste. He was dressed casually, nothing special; but he smelled amazing. I wanted to talk to him. It’s cinnamon, rose and sandalwood. It’s sophisticated and enthralling. It’s a masculine scent. I do not like using the words “smell expensive” but it does — not tacky at all, unlike some well-known fragrances.
This is a special scent. I made up my mind now. This really is something special and I’ll definitely get a bottle ASAP.
njolegs – :
The definitive masculine rose creation. I can see why people can get addicted to this and venerate it so, because it is extremely well-crafted. Cinnamon here is not that comforting and pleasant cinnamon, conjuring up some well-meaning and family friendly X-mas time moment.
It smells sexy and a little angry.
Tobacco is not particularly smoky nor dry. It adds some spiciness and depth and darkens the juicy ever so slightly. Vanilla is very light yet present throughout. On me, it is rose, rose and rose, with that sexy sensual cinnamon and some faraway place exotic woods.
It smells manly and sensual. Nothing synthetic or plasticized in this. And true to Chanel, it smells like cold hard cash. Unusual for Chanel, it is actually a warm perfume.
Very polished and dashing.

_E_N_O_T_ – :
This is a remarkable contemporary offering for men. The notes and accords are wonderfully rich and dynamically juxtaposed, producing moments of contrast that are so delightfully intense they are almost tasted. There are many great observations already written here, among them the astute comment that this might be better appreciated once you’ve tried other, similar scents (for me, for example: the tobacco & ‘port wine’ accords in Burberry London, the umami-meets-cola undertones of vintage Old Spice, the stirring mix of flowers, cedar, sandalwood and musk in vintage Fahrenheit, and the terrific, textured blending of rose, spices and powder-dry vanilla in Habit Rouge…)
That said, Égoïste is really its own thing. The miracle it performs is preserving an impression of a rich, swoon-worthy floral bouquet while at the same time telling your brain a rather haunting tale about your father’s bitter pipe stem, a bottle of sea-dark wine & a mahogany grand piano; oranges and ambrette seeds offer a tart, soapy sweetness that feels like a facet of the sour dimensions of both the tobacco and woods, but overall, a duality persists throughout the long-lasting drydown: though linear in its development, it holds together extremes of stonefruit and smoke, jam and acid, custard and tannins, luminosity and long shadows…
Like some other fragrances I’ve loved (surprisingly like Eau Sauvage, for instance, with which it has almost nothing in common), Égoïste is such a beautiful composition that it keeps demanding your attention in a way that would be annoying if it didn’t wear so well on the skin, being a lively, worldly companion through all kinds of sweat and toil. It takes a sense of internal balance, I suspect, to enjoy it freely and unselfconsciously, but then that does seem like a goal worth striving for…
BripseSteerne – :
I’m not quite sure why this is pour homme, except for marketing purposes.
I bought it for my husband but he isn’t a fan. So I wear it. And it’s a lovely cinnamon/sandalwood scent. Light for me, I’m used to vintage EDP. It’s a bit fresh and bright, a bit spicy. Overall very wearable.
If you aren’t afraid of unisex scents there’s no reason for either sex to avoid this one.
coon – :
As the name implies, this fragrance is my favourite when I just want to enjoy it as my scent — with no consideration of time, event, companies / friends, etc. A love at the first spray, to be honest — it reminds me to the time when I was small and my mum sent me to the local groceries to buy some traditional herbs. An enchanting memory, and a pleasant feeling to wear this aroma with me day or night, in any weather. I don’t know — maybe it’s the combination of cinnamon, rose, and sandalwood. But it’s really pleasant, generating optimism and creativity. And never boring.
hayotorg – :
I have read a number of reviews referring to this fragrance as one of the milestones of male perfumery, so I was curious to find out more about it myself. After applying it and allowing it to settle what I smell is a melange of stale cinnamon, soft tobacco, pepper, a floral element respectively a shy foundation of powderiness and the most vague sweetness which may stem from the vanilla. Now, I was not expecting anything overly sweet but something which would have added depth and which would have balanced or perhaps I should say contrasted the spices. I thought that I smelled vanilla in the relatively sudden drydown into nothingness, but I am not sure. The spices lead to an association with the winter festive season, mulled wine to be precise. I am reminded of elements within a certain bomb of spices, where there is a certain sourness and mustiness as well, which is something that I personally do not seem to warm up to. There, it is amplified even more. But getting back to the fragrance at hand here, I have to say that while the first instant after spraying it on feels chaotic and unround, but for some reason kind of intriguing, it settles into something which technically seems to be made rather well and which may exude a certain wealth but which overall does not convey attractiveness to me. I also have to disagree in so far that there definitely is a certain grandfatherly reminiscence to it, likely due to the tobacco. There are explanations which link some of the aspects noted here to reformulations but I would raise the question whether these reformulations may have highlighted shortcomings of the original fragrance which were perhaps lost amongst the praise and the nostalgia.

I’ve had my eye and nose on Egoiste for a long time. Picked up a large bottle and it really is a class act. I love all men’s offerings from Chanel, except maybe BdC. This one is like a niche at a designer price. Mature scent, but not old mannish or barber shop. If you want something unique but don’t want to spend $200, this is really worth a shot.
2012nbajerseysd1 – :
One of those fragrances that makes me smile. Just one sniff and I’ve swept away.
I don’t know how to describe this scent. You should not read notes, just go to boutique and try it on skin, not blotter. Because it’s so well blended that hard to pick notes one by one.
Chanel names it “Egoiste”, but I would name it “I do what I want and f..k your expectations”.
Incredible, indigo, timeless Jacques Polge’s child.
AndreyPetrov – :
After months of boring citrus based scents this summer, my nose had been craving something deeper… and so I pulled the trigger on Egoiste.
With one mere spritz I was immediately cured and back into olfactory heaven.
The opening blast is so rich and full and complex it’s hard to explain in words (Egoiste has woods listed as TOP notes… that should tell you what to expect!)
If you’re tired of all the one dimensional citrus / white musk fragrances out there, then allow your nose to picture this: chopped up antique mahogany furniture and freshly cut sandalwood sprinkled with cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla, with a handful of dark red roses thrown on top.
One can only imagine how God-like the original must have been in 1990 (not to mention Bois Nois) as today’s version is simply stunning.

What can I say bout this timeless classic ? This is the best perfume from Chanel dedicated to men. I didn’t liked it at first, but now I’m hooked all the way. I can use it any time, any season of course if I’m in mood for it, but overall this is very versatile fragrance, very sophisticated and classy not for everyone. I love heart notes and warm dry down. The great thing about this perfume is longevity and silage wich last 12+ hours and I love it !
Roman113312 – :
A sublime, understated classic. So well blended and balanced that it’s nearly impossible to distinguish the individual notes. The softest cinnamon and tobacco you’ll ever experience in a fragrance. Signature scent worthy.
siav196 – :
Spicy, dry, warm, cinnamon, apple pie, very nice. Yes.
g197002 – :
Another wonderful fragrance from Chanel. This one starts quite strong in the beginning and citrusy rose dominates. The rose/flower scent continues on whilst the prominent woods and tobacco (dry tobacco not like cigarettes) scents kick in. I can detect leather and vanilla in the background and the spice must come from coriander. Overall, the perfume pyramid is pretty accurate and that is exactly what you will get.
This is a complex, expensive smelling masterpiece. As previously described, it is perplexing and mysterious. You can’t figure it out and yet you are enticed by it and drawn to it. Perfect name Egoiste!
Absolutely no age limit on this one but there might be restrictions based on personality type. You have to be mysterious, smart, narcissistic and egoistic. You must know who you are and you don’t mingle with or care about the mediocre crowd. You live in your own world and yet the world admires you.
Good for all weather day/night except very hot temperatures (25+ degrees)

It has nothing to do with Bois des Iles … Egoist has the same vein of Envy men by Gucci … A self confidense fragance, a magnetic force field, really intoxicant. An icon as Acteur by Azzaro, Envy mer by Gucci, and Dune men by Dior
fishman-73 – :
I loved this when I first smelled it – so much so that I got a bottle. But after a week or so I began to fall out of love with it. There’s a kind of creamy powdery vanilla that to me just screams through everything else and really puts me off. I don’t know of anyone else who has this reaction so I’m definitely in the minority, but I sold it on eBay after a few months and was glad to be rid of it.
jonik886 – :
Very dark anise, clove, and cinnamon opening, followed by plummy (maybe this is the sweet tobacco) sandalwood and carnation. 10-15 years ago this would be a strictly male scent, but I think with the current unisex-heavy niche scene it could really be worn by a woman. In fact, it smells like a modern niche, well ahead of its time. It will tide me over till I can get my hands on a bottle of Amouage Memoir Woman, which is very similar. I think I like the drydown of Egoiste even better though. However, this leans more masculine and would be devastatingly attractive on a man! Definitely for cold days, or even better, nights. 10/10
mamba34 – :
I still like Egoiste, but its longevity has definitely become shorter than it used to (25 years ago)…..what a shame!
The smell should be lasting a bit longer because Chanel products are hardly discounted at the shops.
blutngo – :
The quality is evident. The staying power is not. This is not an old man scent. This is not a young man scent. This is the scent of a well off, well dressed man in his 40’s 25 years ago.
I can imagine a man in a suit, a man in a nice khakis and a quality cashmere sweater.
Not as sweet as people say. not as sandalwood dominant at the beginning. the cinnamon takes center stage, but it’s not a food cinnamon, and it’s not obnoxious like that sounds. It’s actually quite a nice fragrance.
I edited this post. too long+ more importantly. How much my wife dislikes this. which .. I don’t know how many women do like this. Some scents appeal more to men. l’instant de guerlain, egoiste, etc. and some fragraces women like more than guys do: ambercrombie, really sweet scents, and some are more universally liked: aventus, dior homme.

Starts with a very sweet, almost edible cinammon & vanilla, and my first impression was – “no no, this is a fragrance pour older femme!” Thankfully, after half an hour the overwhelming sweetness subdues, and you are left with a nice warm, cozy, still sweet scent. Definitely for the nighttime and/or colder part of the year. Fragrantica says it’s a “conservative masculine fragrance”, but in my opinion, it can be unisex, and I know at least one girl who wears it.

Egoiste from Chanel is as edgy as they come but not like an in your face edginess. Egoiste is more burly and eloquent and slightly dark; which makes it inviting, intriguing and very masculine. This is a great fragrance for winter and fall that is that perfect balance between Antaeus and L ‘Habit Rouge.
Egoiste opens perfectly with some cinnamon, sandalwood and rose. The opening is strong and spicy, which sets the tone for this scent. Just as Egoiste is about to go dark, woody and spicy, the vanilla, carnation and tobacco appear and give this dark gent of a scent a bit of bright sweetness and florals. Egoiste settles down into a rich mix of leather, rosewood, mahogany, mandarin and a peppery amber. The scent is simple, bold and rich. The progression of this scent is simple yet robust, and is a pure joy to wear.
Egoiste requires a few sprays to the neck but is a must across the chest, Egoiste with a bit of body heat on a cold day projects like a monster. This fragrance is that inviting masculine draw them in closer winter warmer of a fragrance. Egoiste is to be worn when it is time to head out on the town, so leave this out of the office. Give Egoiste a few sprays when you want to project to your date or Steady Betty that this OUR night out.
Vorkuta – :
The first reason was the television advert – an extravagant, funny Jean-Paul Goude concoction. By giving Prokofiev an MTV treatment, the advert captured perfectly the death throes of the 1980s, or so I decided. So although Égoïste – L’Égoïste, as it was then – was launched in 1990, it has always seemed to me a product of the 1980s.
The second reason was a drag queen called Regina Fong – Reg Bundy, in real life – whom I saw at The Black Cap in London in 1991. Part of Her Imperial Highness’ act involved lip-syncing to the sound of the L’Égoïste advert while throwing paper plates into the audience. The paper plates were meant to suggest the helicopters in a scene from the Francis Ford Coppola film Apocalypse Now in which the Prokofiev was also used.
L’Égoïste was my first scent for those odd reasons. I fell in love with it. It smells like my first proper steps into the adult world. Crudely (I’m no expert): cola, frankincense and tobacco. A nightclub scent; I remember wearing it the first time I went to Heaven. Otherwise, I wear it when I am alone in the house, and know that I will remain so, and want to bring a smile to my face.

I feel similarly about Chanel Antaeus. The reviews make it seem like such a completely masculine thing, but in actuality it’s very, very unisex. Egoiste and Antaeus have that in common. They play out differently on the skin of a woman than they do on men. But regardless of gender, it’s so, so good!

Égoïste is a stellar release, from a particularly creative and experimental time – thinking of other unique launches during these years as Kenzo Pour Homme, Dior’s Dune, Givenchy’s Insensé, Krizia’s Spazio Uomo, etc. It remains one of my all-time favourites. What makes Égoïste so special – apart from its excellent jus – is also the unique narrative it inhabits – with roots at Chanel’s legendary Bois des Iles, and the short-lived and equally mystic Bois Noir, it’s a rare successful example how to do something with historical material and bringing it up to date. At the time this came out, there also was not anything like it – especially in the masculine range. Sadly it suffered a bit with different reformulations, although I hope we experienced the worst phase some years ago – the current version is improved again leaning more towards the original. But as the recent Les Exclusifs disaster showed, these days with Chanel, one does not longer now if their current perfumer and the executive board, might not have ‘an idea’. Losing the cap’s original wood grain surface (which second link to bois literally and to Bois Noir original cap), for a plain one, already proofs one step further in the wrong direction.
Aside from these cosmetic – yet significant formal aspects – the perfume currently remains of highest recommendation!

Three sprays: one on each shoulder and one on the back of the neck. It’s 20 degrees out and I have been radiating cinnamon and mellow sandalwood for over 9 hours. Absolutely amazing. The drydown is really warm, spicy and comforting. The amber and tobacco are there in the background with a hint of vanilla. And the supremely understated florals keep it classy. True, it does go on smelling a bit medicinal. It is almost like that ointment old folks use for a sore back. But 20 minutes later it’s a hot toddy in a warm kitchen with a pie in the oven. I wouldn’t want this to be my only fragrance, but I can’t imagine anything nicer on a cold day.
4+ out of 5.

There’s an awkward moment when you realize what you were looking for in the sky was actually beside you on earth. That is my impression when I was browsing a spicy sweet tobacco with feminine finish to emphasize on sumptuousness; aka Égoïste.
With no particular reason, I had always forgotten to try this perfume until I received a sample few years ago in a cold sunny autumn day. I randomly gave it a try, and it literally gave me goosebumps. Égoïste is a candied spicy lavender tobacco with prominent cinnamon and sandalwood and rose. A special delivery and one of 90’s best.

Blind bought this because i love chanel and i own all of their designer releases minus allure homme sport cologne, which i will get. Opens up similar to pour monsieur but within a minute the spices, woods come out as well as the florals. I almost pick up a tea note or even anise, similar a bit to ysl opium.
As this dries down, the sandalwood, cinnamon and vanilla jump out and mix with the rose. This is incredible. It lasts 12 hours plus on my skin. I pick up notes similar to oud used in designer frags, but its mild. I’m blown away. Classy, elegant, timeless, masculine, perfect. I have to keep wearing to be sure, but this might have become not only my favorite chanel, but one of my all time formal, cold weather fragrances of all time. Chanel has it all: timeless scents that go back to eras gone by, timeless modern scents. Formal, casual, sporty, you name it. If i was forced to only have one fragrance, it might be aventus. If i was forced to only purchase from one house going forward, it would be chanel. Reports of its demise and being passed by are horrifically exaggerated.
This is a masterpiece, its a must have for the collector and if you wanted only one fragrance for the winter, this would EASILY do the job.

I used this back in the late 80’s early 90’s and thought id revisit it today.
It was a unique experience, one that I’ve never had with a frag before.
Scent memory kicked in as soon as I sprayed it, opening was similar but less oudy/medicinal than the vintage version but within 2- minutes this was back on point and just as potent as I remembered it being.
Woody, spicy, warming with a touch of green about it, absolutely lovely, deep rich almost tobacco like in the dry down but then after an hour or so…….
I got the most awful rancid pine/fecal oudy rotten vegetation type waft that actually made me gag and I vomited.
It is quite simply the most nauseating experience I’ve ever had smelling anything and spent 10 minutes thoroughly scrubbing this off.
I often think how great it is when houses bring old/discontinued frags back but why oh why did they have to resurrect this one?

A light creamy sandalwood fragrance,a sensual spicy scent that is pleasant and versatile for formal or casual occasions in the colder months,I am a late bloomer when it came to this fragrance,in my youth I rejected a scent such as this , and in my mind in the past it was considered too conservative for my taste, as a older gent now,I’ve grown to appreciate a classy fragrance when I smell one and this is one of them.

I’ve been searching for a tobacco scent that isn’t too masculine for me to feel comfortable wearing and I think this is it.
What makes Egoiste so special is that despite the heaviness of the notes – woods, tobacco, amber it has a sense of transparency to it. The treatment of cinnamon here is also very special. It reminds me that cinnamon is a wood too. So rather than smelling like a Yankee candle it smells of a delicious complex and spicy wood, I’m surprised to see rose listed as a prominent note because I don’t detect it at all but perhaps it is giving the composition a certain roundness.
For me, sandalwood is the dominant note, perhaps because I have the vintage version. This may also be why this is one of the few scents I have that never go wonky and overpowering when oversprayed.
This is the good stuff.
FaiolyAkaN – :
At first, I wasn’t a fan. I wear Chanel No. 5 exclusively, and purchased Egoiste for my husband. I took a sniff on paper when it came and immediately curled lip and said “Too sweet.” But, I gave it to him anyway JB and after he wore it for a few minutes, I walked by him and caught a whiff. Something in the way it meshed with his body chemistry – wow. He said he didn’t think it smelled manly, but all I wanted to do was get close.
I’m not sure I’ll let him out of the house with it on.
lyaksevna – :
As others have indicated, Fall is the best time of year for Egoiste. It’s like a fall wreath of cinnamon & other autumn spices, woods, sandalwood, and a hint of floral done in a masculine way. Although it’s not listed in the notes I also detect anise or something similar.
Egoiste is extremely well blended, and it’s unique enough to have a place in most fragrance collections. I’ve been wearing it every fall for the last 15 years but only 3 or 4 times during the season. It’s so beautiful I never want to get bored with the scent so I prefer to limit wearings to just a few times a year. Call me crazy, but that’s how I get most enjoyment. And with 200+ fragrances in my collection, I’m able to wear each one only a few times a year and never get bored of them.
Sadly, my vintage bottle of Egoiste is about 95% empty so I’m using it even more sparingly. Last year I did test the latest formulation and was happy to learn the scent, to me, is the same with the vintage being a bit more deeper. However, as others have said, the newer formulation is not nearly as strong as the vintage. So I’m ether going to have to find a vintage bottle or settle for the weaker sauce. At least I’ll get the same scent, it’s just going to take more sprays and several re-applications.

i was only a kid when i saw the famous advertising on tv, i found it so funny, girls screaming “egoiste!egoiste!” now that my interest in fragrance matter is for retro style i decided to give it a try . i was impressed and, despite i never tested before, i said “hei i know it! it is so familiar!” but my dad never used it, so how is it possible? it’s simple, because chanel egoiste is a legend and in the early 90’s it was the sauvage of today in terms of impact on the market and in italy was a big success. it reminds those years, beautiful years…
regarding the scent, chanel egoiste is a masterpiece, no doubt about it. i love the sandalwood and spicy notes, i was afraid to feel too much roses but they are silent, everything is very manly and classy, nothing out of balance and final result is so addictive, a little bit retro but a modern gentleman can wear it easily. the performance is average, not loud and screaming, more smoother and gentle. it’s a daring fragrance, it’s not so safe in these days, in the early 90’s every parfume was challenging, the market changes in the decades.
few days ago i tried a long bottle with a darker juice, i dont know the batch code and i found the opening definitely stronger than mine from 2017, but the drydown on the paper seems to be identical. i read on basenotes that the new formulation with the square bottle and the little cap is worth buying and similar to the original,so i hope to be free from another “reformulation madness”. seasons: fall and winter. occasions: nightout or dates. a pure class in a bottle, not for everyone but if u like retro style u can blind buy, im so happy to have it!! grazie per la lettur
