Description

The classic fresh masculine fragrance by Dior—Eau Sauvage from 1966, was re-interpreted in a new format, as Eau Sauvage Cologne, in the spring of 2015. As for Eau Sauvage Parfum edition from 2012, vintage photographs and recordings of French actor Alain Delon were used for the advertising campaign of Eau Sauvage Cologne.

The fresh citrusy-spicy and woody composition begins with accords of Calabrian bergamot, mandarin and bitter grapefruit. The heart notes include galbanum, petitgrain, hedione and pink pepper, while the base consists of woody tones of vetiver.

Photos of advertising campaign originate from the movie “The Last Adventure” by Robert Enrico, filmed in 1967. The fragrance is available in bottles of 50 and 100 ml. The nose behind this fragrance is Francois Demachy.

I wore Eau Sauvage occasionally in the 80s. But I don’t remember it clearly enough to compare it very well with the versions today. I kind of think this one is the closest. But it was a deodorant spray I used back then, not the “real” cologne.
After trying several different samples of the cologne recently, and really liking it, I mistakenly bought a bottle of the parfum. As a fairly newbie with fragrances I didn’t realize that it might be totally different, as it indeed is. I like the parfum too, but it is different, for different situations. I wanted this very fresh long lasting citrus.
So, now that I got a bottle of the cologne, I do like it, but I hardly recognize it, and I’m disappointed with the longevity of the citrus part. It isn’t really long lasting for me. It is a warm summer day. I spray on a whole bunch. I like the opening citrus, but it really disappears rather quickly. The drydown is nice too, but I wanted the distinct citrus to last. My wife isn’t even noticing this, and she loves Eau Sauvage, and really liked when I put on just a bit of the sample I had. Seemed to last much longer. I’m puzzled. Surprisingly many fragrances that others report as long lasting just disappear quickly on me.
Seems to me like I got a different batch from what I’ve tried recently. It is closer to the parfum, with the drydown very similar to the parmum, but it is largely lacking the strong long lasting citrus. I had tried the EdP, the EdT and the Cologne next to each other in a store, and the difference was clear, and the cologne I sprayed on lasted a long time. This bottle I have now does not, and it doesn’t really smell the same.

Amazing expensive smelling green citrus scent. Perfect summer refresher!
Only problem: worst performance and longevity in the history of perfumery!
Lasts for 1-2 hrs MAX, and I’ve tested this on myself and few others. And that 1-2 hrs is with heavy application. Time tested was during summer 25-30 degrees, subjects of all races. This is the moment you have to question the validity of some Fragrantica reviews.
NO, this will not last! This will last for 1 hr, maybe 2 if you’re lucky. 38 votes to long lasting is simply ‘BS’, or those who voted live in a vacuum space and they count extremely close residual faintest skin scent as part of its longevity.
Still lovely, extrememly pleasant scent and I am glad I own it.

This is a good, albeit relatively simple flanker of the original Eau Sauvage. It’s all about citrus notes here (with a light vetiver backbone), so don’t expect any of the more floral, herbal, or musky characteristics of the original classic. But it’s composed well, nice and tight, bright and vibrant, with typical Dior quality ingredients. In many ways it reminds me of Dior Homme Cologne, as it’s a straightforward citrus fragrance for men that succeeds exactly because it keeps it simple and doesn’t add any unnecessary elements or try to be cute, and as a result it never falls apart or hits any discordant stages. But while Dior Homme Cologne seems to focus mostly on ginger and grapefruit, Eau Sauvage Cologne focuses on more lemon-like citruses, apparently a combination of bergamot and orange, but it smells very lemony to me. The notes are bold and healthy, clear and tenacious, and they do a good job of holding on for the life of the scent. If you’re looking for a citrus cologne, this is definitely one that should be sampled. It’s hard to recommend Dior Homme Cologne over Eau Sauvage Cologne or vice versa, as both are pretty much flawlessly constructed and feature solid performance, and it will really come down to personal taste as to how you like your citruses. I’d say ESC is a bit more of a “middle yellow” citrus fragrance while I’d describe DHC as “pale yellow” and “green.” All in all, this was a quiet release, but a good one. From what I understand now it’s been discontinued in the United States but is still available for sale overseas, so maybe it’s not a bad time to look into it if you’ve been considering it. Eau Sauvage Cologne gets a final score of 8.5 out of 10 and is recommended for sampling or even a blind buy if you know what you’re looking for. Add half a point if you’re a big fan of the citrus genre.
Side note: ESC might be a bit stronger than DHC, which could be good or bad depending on what you’re going for. ESC will stand out a bit more because the citrus notes are sharper and brighter, but as a result DHC has less of a tendency to fall into that “cleaning product” territory where people sometimes relegate straight-up citrus fragrances.

Hi so i smelt this in store and really liked it along with a tester of of the EDT version. Ended up liking both so much i bought each online. Turns out the cologne version is actually better than the EDT in both projection, longevity and (objectively) smell. Long story short i sold the EDT and have kept the cologne. Its good stuff.

Thumbs up from me. Piercing citruses all the way through, surprisingly persistent for a fresh scent (comparable to Acqua di Gio Essenza, although the profile here is much thinner), it also has some bitter green notes to enhance the edginess. Very clean and simple, like a carefully selected high frequency band.
I see no point in comparing it with the original, herbal and woody Eau Sauvage, since it’s a whole different category. It doesn’t have the distinctive soapy density or the fruity sweetness of the original. But it has a lot more longevity, despite lacking the density in the base. Just the top notes all the way through. But they do last hours and hours.
As for the synthetic/natural dichotomy, it is not natural for citrus notes to last that long anyway. But to my nose, it’s a pleasant accord, although it could associate with some cleaning products. That could also be an upside, if you are looking for “clean” rather than “natural” (earthy), for obvious reasons it’s a very rare occasion to get both. For example, ESC could be recommended for those who don’t mind the synthetic nature of Dior Sauvage and like the piercing quality of the latter.
    ***
After some wearings, I have three additional points to share. * First of all, the accord is so fresh, specific and persistent that I immediately got the impression from a jacket that I wore about a month ago, although I didn’t even spray it on directly. It’s almost as if the “cloud of freshness” reached my mind before I distinguished any specific notes. So different was it from any environmental smells around me. * Second, it is absolutely unisex, I would even say genderless, because it is so clean. But I probably wouldn’t particularly want to smell it on my GF, because it has no allure to it (although I wouldn’t mind smelling it on her). You could also spray your laundry with it, no problem. * Third, I can imagine that while it’s very inoffensive to those around you, it could by the same token become a bore for the wearer. It’s all about the projection of an image of cleanliness.

I grew up with my dad wearing Eau Sauvage. When I was 6 I would ask his permission to wear some. The Eau Sauvage of today has no relationship to the Eau Sauvage from the 70s.
Eau Sauvage Cologne is something else. It’s deceptively simple with hidden depths. My girlfriend also wears this and it smells amazing on her: attitude, and a beguiling dry down. It’s fresh and fizzy. And it lasts.
I love Eau Sauvage Cologne. It is not the bull in a china shop that Sauvage is.
    Highly recommended.

    I love this!
    It’s green, citrusy
    I’d say somewhat minty
    and amazingly last for hours.
    the green galbanum and earthy
vetiver blend amazingly well with the
fresh citrus, so energizing and uplifting!
give it a try, there’s no need for reason to
love it, but thousand and one to hate it. Cheers.

I’ve been wanting to try this for a long, long time. Until recently I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. The other day I noticed it was finally on amazon and I bought it right on the spot.
I tried the original a couple years ago and it just wasn’t for me, not to mention it’s extremely weak and short lived.
This reminds me of a mix between Dior Homme cologne and Dior Homme sport 2012. It’s very fresh, fizzy like a glass of 7up soda and immediately puts me in a good mood! It starts out with a citrus explosion of grapefruit and bergamot, which gives me the Dior Homme cologne vibe. After about an hour, it starts to ease into a fresh and grassy Vetiver that really rounds it out nicely with the sparkling citrus notes still present but much quieter. That’s where I get the smoothness of Dior Homme sport 2012 with its citron and iris combo.
Longevity: 5-6 hours on skin, up to 10 hours or so on clothes
    Projection: moderate
    Sillage: leaves a nice trail
Overall I give this a 9/10 and it’s quickly becoming a favorite of mine!

Nice and pleasant fragrance. Somehow generic but still. Sorry for all the frag snobs out there, but I prefer this than any other Eau Sauvage flanker or the original. Second best is Extreme for me. They both are definitely underrated juices in my humble opinion.

    This one is very good.
One of the rare long lasting citrus fragrances-probably because of the vetiver.
    Wearing it cheers me up.
Bergamot, grapefruit and orange are giving an initial blast of absolute freshness.
After a while one gets a very classy drydown-though in no way mature or old,as to me Eau Sauvage turns out to be quite soon-where one can still smell the citrus notes lingering, combined with a very nice woody and vetiver smell.
At first I thought this to be a clone of the YSL pour homme or Atelier Cologne stuff, but when I tried it I found out I was wrong.
Bought a full bottle and am enjoying the experience. And it’s not a juice that fears the hottest weather.
It’s worth being a signature summer fragrance.
It needs to be sprayed without restraint in order to let one get how wonderful it can be.

Citrus blast in first minutes. Then it turns into spicy, fresh scent, with still noticeable citruses. My GF loves it. She was even sexually aroused last time I wore it. Was it because of magical hedione? Or simply because she likes citrus fragrances. I don’t know. But I like the idea, that fragrance could possibly have that kind of power. Anyhow, this is a great fragrance for summer, and girls seem to love it a lot.
Just out of curiosity, you should try to wear it when you are with your GF, or other women. You can end up being very surprised :).

Eau Sauvage Cologne is a really nice, modern synthetic citrus that reminds me more of Comme de Garçons’s Soda, A Lab on Fire’s Almost Transparent Blue or Eau de Rochas pour Homme, than of any of the Eau Sauvage family. Maybe it’s even one of Demachy’s current better releases. Recommended for anyone who’s appreciating the citric notes of kitchen detergents, cleaning products and syntheticness.

Sparkling lemonade, freshly peeled citruses and a dewy mint give Eau Sauvage the youth remake. I love the whole line, and this fourth edition is a welcome addition to my collection. Out of the five it may be the least good, but it’s still quite good.
Standing on the shoulder of a giant, ESC is content with the supporting role it has. Which is to remind us all how Absolutely Great Eau Sauvage is.
And this is why i like ESC – it has accepted what it is and does not pretend to be anything else. It does not try to replicate the magic of ES, it’s just a cologne, and a very good one. There is a cozy musky facet that adds warmth to the composition.

If you’re impressed by Eau Sauvage, then don’t bother with Eau Sauvage Cologne. They’re not even comparable. They’re completely different scents.
Eau Sauvage has an incomparable depth to it – something almost pleasantly musty – which grounds the citrus top. The Cologne, however, is all about the citrus top notes. It’s very modern and fresh, but lacks the depth of the original. Longevity is also very poor.
There are better light citrus scents out there.

I liked it the first time my husband wore it, but already at the 2nd I was fed up with it. The actual cologne notes are totally overpowered by chemical watery notes like Calone. And it has a quite rude sillage.

When you try this fragrance you can see the CLEAR difference between the many average houses/ citrus fragrances and the real deal….DIOR almost never let us down..this is a high class, sophisticated citrus fragrance…I may even like it better than Dior homme cologne, this has much more elements and depth to it… great for the spring and summer…and definitely not so old-school like the original…
Overall a nice 9 out of 10 for a citrus fragrance…it does not get much better than this…
P.S.: I do own and like Eau de Sud….but this is just a much better and more refined modern fragrance…besides, they are not that similar….let us say 75% max.

I bought this earlier this year and I really like it. I was looking for a lighter cologne that stuck around. It smells modern and I can wear it for many occasions. Sauvage is a warm citrus and sporty cologne.

Very strong, I put on..ahem, 7 sprays today at lunch time in a store, and heading back into the office my co-worker who sits 2 foot behind me said, “yup you’ve been testing sprays again haven’t you?” Lasted about 5-6 hours and had a good projection but I very much over applied. Very citrusy opening and it retained that feeling throughout.

I smelled it in winter and yhought it was a joke and a complete miss. It was like house detergent or something chemical with a vague citrus smell. However I have tried it again this spring on a warmer day and I understood what it was supposed to really smell and what weather it was made for. It it fresh, elegant and highly energetic. A real warmer season wonder and another reason for smelling scents at different seasons to check if they are or are not in their most adapted environment. I love it now.

    An excellent flanker!
Not at all weak, nor uninteresting!
Citrus all the way, with a smart touch of pepper and vetiver.
Alive and refreshing, it fits a man in the summer.
The younger age of a classic scent, not similar but definitely related with the original.
For those who like Eau d’Hadrien, Acqua Di Parma Colonia and the rest of the holly family of the mediterranean summer’s colognes.
    Bravo, Dior! A deserved 8,7/10!

Is this a bottle of water?

This really requires a bit of patience to see its full potential. It opens with a pleasant and modern, if somewhat generic citrus. It is quality though. After that, the woods and green notes come through where it becomes a sweet, clean blend of grassy vetiver of fresh leaves. It remains this way into the dry down and shows surprisingly longevity. No, it doesn’t relate to the original anymore than the EDP, however, that shouldn’t be held against it. Enjoy it on its own merits

  27. :

    3 out of 5

I most certainly cannot be bothered whatsoever by the nil resemblance with the original. This is just great if you live somewhere hot humid and dry, as the lemon literally cuts through the air. This may sound like a dish soap advertisement, but actually the citruses are done quite well here and the longevity is not bad at all (looking at you Dior home that’s gone in a couple of hours.
    7/10

  28. :

Despite the reviews, I honestly can’t say that I like it — mostly because all I can smell is lemon. You might as well squeeze a lemon and use that as your perfume – it’s much cheaper.

I actually prefer this one over the original. While I like the original very much, it ended up smelling a little too “sharp” on my skin. This one is more rounded and mellow while still retaining the heart of the original.
I’m also curious to see how the Hedione works in this. I sprayed my wrist and the SA wanted to smell it on my skin. When I left the shop she said “It really suits you” with a big ass grin on her face. I was like “What the hell…”.
I’m not sure how quick Hedione works in relation to activation of the specific area of the hypothalamus in women which is known to promote sexual responsiveness by flooding the body with sex hormones (article from The Telegraph), but I’ll get back to you if I experience similar comments from other women.

Some are saying this is a bit of a cynical effort on Dior’s part to milk a little more revenue from their Eau Sauvage line.
That may be true, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that this is a well constructed scent with all the signature Dior quality you would expect.
And it smells excellent to boot – like a greatest hits compilation of all your favourite citrus-fresh summer scents. It’s not going to win too many awards for originality, but it may win you over with its effortlessly elegant freshness.
For me, this is like a superior version of the latest Dior Homme Cologne as it offers considerably better performance and doesn’t have the harsh alcohol opening I get with DHC. There’s also something about Eau Sauvage Cologne that reminds me of the dry down of my 2012 Dior Homme Sport.
I may need to clear some space from my warm weather lineup as this is a serious contender for summer selection.

  36. :

    3 out of 5

Oh my god! That was my first reaction after spraying this on my wrist on a hot and sticky summer day. It’s like diving in a pool full of ice and citrus peels. But it has character, it’s not watery. The dry down is a little softer, before it vanishes. The staying power is medium, and quite good for a cologne. On my skin it’s pretty much citrus all the way, and a little vetiver in the end.
I love the original Eau Sauvage, and I think this is an easier version. Perfect for summer. Ladies, try this one!

  37. :

    “Oh yeah!” -Duffman
What a gem! It’s like a spicier version of Dior homme cologne (2013) with much better sillage and lasting power.

I am tired of those summer flankers. Eau sauvage is lost in a citrus accord than is anything except singular. Generic summer cologne engineered to please crowds that will BUY it or boost the original Eau sauvage’s sellings.
Where is the idea ? Where is the creation ?
    Sad.

I love it… A warm citrus that lasts forever.

  40. :

It’s like Dior homme eau without the iris. Simple fragrance but very well done. Grapefruit seems dominant. Longevity good. Longer than the edt.

  41. :

    4 out of 5

Grapefruit, lemongrass and pepper. Surprisingly, on my skin this hangs around longer than the EDT; which although great (IMO)does suffer in the longevity department. Undoubtedly a warm weather one. If only the EDT lasted as long…

  42. :

    5 out of 5

Fresh citrus scent I think that adds absolutely nothing, although no resemblance to the original.
Citrus lemony without being excellent or very bright, are “decently” facts, much higher than the last “cologne” Guerlain, to give unejemplo, but are far from achieving the quality of other fragrances style and I can think of a few.
When dry, citrus blend with a note like green, I do not recognize and feel pretty synthetic and maybe some pink pepper, sooo soft.
I have been unable to feel anything of vetiver at any time, or looking for him anxiously nose sticking to the skin.
There is little more to tell about this fragrance, unless both the wake and longevity, are moderate, perhaps surpassing the average of fragrances of this style in the two aspects.
Here, it costs about $ 90 100ml, which seems a price well above what the quality of the product offered.
For half the price, or less, would be a possible purchase, but only if you like lemony citrus, with a feeling of freshness and cleanliness and nothing else.
I actually left with the feeling that I’ve been avoiding all the time using the word “mediocre”, but the reality is that is what has given me the fragrance broadly.

  43. :

    3 out of 5

The original Eau Sauvage was citrusy and herbal, very fresh and crisp on both accounts, but it also came off as natural. This also was a key as to whom it was marketed toward: real, minimalist, no-nonsense men. The original now smells dated, at least for my nose, but the new release is hardly an improvement.
This is a cologne for the digital age. I was really surprised by how synthetic this one smells and not in a good way. The opening is a super bright white citrus–but almost laundry like. It reminds me very much of Dior Homme Sport–there is a harsh, unnatural freshness to both.
    Not impressed at all.

  44. :

    3 out of 5

Smelled this today for the first time and I loved it. For a cologne it is very strong. 1 spray on my hand and I can still smell it 12 hours later. I really did not like eau sauvage in the past but since the cuir fraicheur version I have bought them all. The perfume version is my favorite but this cologne version is such a summer burst of freshness. Fantastic bottle too with the magnetic cap again. Don’t fall for the negatively, one spray will blow it all away…

  45. :

    3 out of 5

All I can say is that I WANT this. I’m a woman. I tried it on my skin in store and my first impression was: amazing. And in the evening I took a shower but could still faintly smell it on my arm afterwards, so I think it’s quite long-lasting. The impressive thing about this scent is that it manages to stay a sophisticated perfume and not turn into some cleaning agent (like L’Eau Par Kenzo Pour Homme by Kenzo), because of the “overwhelming” citrusiness.
I’m a biiig fan of Dior Homme Cologne 2013 which is also very fresh and citrusy. Both of these colognes have Calabrian bergamot as their ingredient so I guess that that’s what I’m falling for. I think I’ll love Eau Sauvage Cologne when I finally buy it! And by the way Eau Sauvage Cologne is way better than the original Eau Sauvage!

  46. :

Brilliant fragrance, very high quality addition to the cologne genre. It doesn’t store any surprises for cologne lovers, but it is definitely top shelf. Bought at first sniff.

  47. :

I also thought of Eau Sauvage as a more mature scent, but this indeed can be a universal fresh scent for any age. Just wanted to mention that all throughout the duration it also reminded me of AH Edition Blanche but with a woody tone to it. Would buy it but thats not cheap for a summer frag. Also i have a sense that you get tired of this scent quickly.

I agree with Naipe 100%. It reminds me, after 30 minutes, to the classic Courreges. It projects very well for a cologne for 4 or 5 hours, then it stays close to the skin but, no doubt, still there for 2 or 3 hours more, so perfect so great longevity for this cologne.
I’m not a big fan of the classic eau savage but I’ll give this an opportunity as an alternative to Dior Homme Cologne, which I own and love but it doesn’t project as I’d like.

I’ve tried these days and I must admit that it has really surprised me but well, I don’t go mad… I just like it. Somehow it reminds me to the classic Courreges. It’s a decent citrus fragrance with a twist, that sometimes feels like feminine, sometimes childish, although the prominent vetiver note gives it a definitely manly character. Furthermore its longevity is higher than average citrus scent and it doesn’t come close quickly but it’s rather noticeable 3-4 hours after it has been sprayed. The beauty of the bottle and the white magnetic cap is unquestionable. I don’t know what to think… I’ll let it stand for a while and if it calls me, I’ll go.

I always thought, specially in the last years, Eau Savage as a cologne. Two hours máximum in my skin. But I love it anyway. So. It´s difficult to imagine this perfume as a “cologne”. We will give a try.

During last 3 days had sniffs of the new Cologne version of Eau Sauvage. I’m disappointed so much.
    1. It has nothing common with the regular Eau Sauvage, even with the modern version. It smells as a sweeter synthetic version of Dior Homme Cologne with some amount of “old fashioned” plastic notes.
    2. It opens with tangerines from Dior Homme Cologne, though the opening is enriched with something like mastique smelling rather “plastic” to me. I have DHC on the one hand, ESC on the other. They are very similar, but ESC is sweeter and more synthetic.
    3. In the base the new Cologne smells like any other modern ozonic aquatic with some sweetness, like, for example, any L’Eau par Kenzo flanker.
After the Eau Sauvage Parfum masterpiece this one smells very cheap. Unfortunately. I will still prefer Dior Homme Cologne or Chanel Allure Homme Sport Cologne in this genre.

close to smell like allure homme edition blanche edp at first spray, but finally different in evolution !! i just bought it 3 days ago, and i really love it !!
i was not fan of eau sauvage , i found it too much ” old man” but this cologne reminds me my childness ,when i entered in the bath room of my grand father, the smell of soap and cologne was floating in the air , and this great eau sauvage cologne smell like that ! soapy and class !
really love it ! blind buy if you can’t smell it before, you can’t be disapointed or deceived !
