Description

“The aroma of barrel-aged bourbon reserved in freshly lacquered armoires. A vanillic sweetness emanates from the lustrous finish of the wooden furnishings while incense occupies the matterless space of the abode. The literature linining the shelves tells tales of centuries past, and likewise, benzoin resin charms the fragrance with its timeless essence. Like the grandeur of the Renaissance architecture that has influenced the fragrant eponym, this exalted eau de parfum will crown itself upon the lists of those fortunate enough to catch a whiff. Chateau is bottled luxury.” – a note from the brand.

Chateau was launched in 2017. The nose behind this fragrance is Mahsam Raza.

My second try from this new house of Eighteen Fifty Parfums, Chateau is the fragrance I was most keen on trying, given that it was framed around vanilla, among my favorite notes.
It’s a rich, boozy vanilla, not unlike bourbon vanilla but a sweeter Madagascar vanilla rendered creamy and boozy by being mixed with the resins of benzoin and labdanum. It’s also woody and well-blended with the cedar and musk. Orris is listed but I don’t get much of its powdery side, if nothing else, though I’m less apt to detect its other facets.
As a vanilla lover, I recognize that I can both be unusually enthusiastic and inclined to prefer a new vanilla fragrance just as I can be unusually critical relative to the existing vanillas on the market that came first. Chateau is clearly a beautiful scent, though, and while rubbing shoulders against other vanillas on the market, it still has its own identity. Its use of cedar and incense remind me of L’Occitane Eau Des Baux, but clearly the cedar and incense are bigger in that than in this. Similarly, Le Labo Vanille 44 comes to mind but the vanilla is quite different in that.
Chateau also performs robustly, creating some large projection for hours and lasting quite a while as well, easily over ten hours. And at $85 for 50ml, Chateau is certainly affordable enough that it could easily end up in many vanilla lovers’ collections.
As a boozy vanilla fragrance under $100, I was inclined to compare it to Perry Ellis Oud Black Absolute, which in my opinion is a clear vanilla winner in terms of both scent and value, as it’s been available on the grey market at times for as little as $30 for 100ml. Chateau doesn’t come quite that cheap, but it’s obviously richer and denser on the whole when compared side-by-side to OBVA and for that reason, it’s a tremendous vanilla achievement since it’s still well under the cost of Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille, generally regarded as the superlative vanilla, at $260 for 75ml.
I’m overall delighted by Chateau and think it’s a superior vanilla fragrance that needs to be examined by vanilla lovers especially and tried by anyone that has my sweet sense for fragrance. Bravo to Michael and Mahsam on this creation.

Extremely pleasant and sexy vanilla/bourbon perfume by the new house of Eighteen Fifty. Has moderate sillage/performance and smells extremely classy. Should be used for more formal events. Opening is a bit strong but give it 15 minutes and it dries down to a beautiful vanilla/incense scent.
    Performance 7/10
    Sillage 6/10
    Scent 9/10
Price Point Justified 10/10. EXCELLENT price for this one. Def extremely nice-luxury smelling.

Wow! Just Wow! Ladies and gentlemen,Opulence at it’s finest.  I had to actually look up the Chateau Marmont that this fragrance represents. Just to give myself the image and what it stands for.
A beautiful vanillic ever so slightly boozy scent with an iris undertone.
(and that was just the opening)
Not a lipstick iris aroma like dior homme. But the note is present just hiding in the background as the vanilla is truly the key player in this perfumed concert. After a duration of time the other notes add into to the symphony.  Wafts of benzoin and incense intertwined with vanilla that carries on until the dry down of this long lasting perfume hits it’s last cords.
What you end up with is a brilliant and classy base of musky vanilla.  Dare i say sexy!
Yes i do.  This is a sexy aroma that can be worn by anyone.
    I totally agree with Alyssa79.
There is something in this fragrance that gives it a masculine tone. But that can easily be worn by a lady.
Truly unisex!  Move over TFTV there is a new competitor for the top vanilla perfume.
    * i rarely heavily spray a new fragrance that i am sampling, but with this one i instantly fell in love and had to reapply. Instead of the usual 2 sprays to test.  I went with 4.
    Longevity,sillage,aroma.
For me this is a top notch vanilla fragrance that hits all aspects correctly and lasts a very long time.
Well done eighteen fifty parfums you killed it with this release.

I am a huge vanilla lover (in all shapes and sizes…sweet, dark, etc) so I was seriously looking forward to trying this. This is warmth, comfort and beauty in a bottle.
First spray didn’t disappoint and right away I smiled and knew what it reminded me of – Guerlain SDV. Not that it smells exact but it’s in the same vein of that dark, deep, sexy, boozy vanilla. Throughout the day I kept getting whiffs of this delicious amberyness and when I would put my nose to my arm, I would get a smoky incense. Each time I’d keep asking, is that me? I am smitten on how it was doing that and how the notes just kept dancing around each other. There is a “bite” to this as well… what I call a sharpness or almost masculine vibe to a fragrance. Longevity? I sprayed at 8 am and it’s still going strong at 10 pm. This is such a sexy unisex fragrance that any vanilla lover should try and while it may be California themed, it’s wrapping me in it’s warm cozy comfort on my 19 degree New York day
