I gave this perfume several tries and unfortunately it just isn’t for me. Such a shame, I am really heartbroken over it because it’s such a gorgeous incarnation of No 5.. a fresh and fizzy lemonade twist, powdered sugar and aldehydes.. utterly gorgeous and utterly fleeting. Within 10 minutes of spraying it becomes a skin scent.. another 10 mins and it is undetectable.
Chanel perfumes are not cheap. We all know this. I understand some fragrances are meant to be worn lightly; fresh office-safe skin scents that will not offend anyone or trigger any allergies. This is a lovely sentiment as yes not everyone is a perfume fan and some people are sensitive to the chemicals. However for the price we pay for Chanels…I’d expect the scent to linger for more than 20 minutes.
Seeing that others have the same problem with longevity is rather affirming.. I’d recommend testing before buying. It is undoubtedly a beautifully blended fragrance but if your skin sucks up light perfumes I’d stay away from this one. I will stick with No 5 EDP and Eau Premiere.. those two are beasts!

I am loving this & the itch to buy will soon be very real. I’m a little surprised by everyone who says it doesn’t last long… I suppose next to some of the heavier Chanels, the original classics, sure… but I’m finding more lasting power than Cristalle EDP so far (while Cristalle EDT, though utterly divine, literally vanishes on me after about 20 minutes… I digress.) I prefer a closer “skin scent” anyway, though, so this is a happy medium.
I’m enjoying this far more than Eau Première, which, while definitely very pretty and clearly referencing the original No. 5, turns a bit too sweet for my tastes. Like others here I’m getting more musk and wood in the dry-down after about 3 hours. I think they’re very crafty to offer the all-over body spray, as I would love to pretty much bathe in this.

Sparkling citrus and aldehydes with ylang ylang and soft musk. Very nice!

This is Chanel No. 5 perfume minus the “stinky” parts.
Flippin’ fantastic but longevity is so/so.
Because of the longevity issues ONLY – not a safe “blind buy”.
    Otherwise very nice !!

Mmmm this is such a beautiful elegant and feminine fragrance! A sparkling personality that’s chic and modern.
This is a clearer and less mature version of the original. She is the youthful daughter who is fun loving, less serious and a tad excitable! The bright aldehydes and citrus shine here, but not in a screechy in your face way! She is well mannered! Luminous and classy. This is for a beautiful women that doesn’t need to try too hard to impress-her beauty is -natural- and quietly shines.
I think of white when I feel this, to me it epitomises sophistication and confidence in a women without being unisex and masculine. It has the perfect balance of soft and strong. Not at all assertive though! This women knows who she is and is quietly confident! She is not arrogant and won’t tolerate crap from anyone! I think the perfumers made this well a lovely juxtaposition of the May Rose, Ylang Ylang and Citrus and Neroli! I love this! If only the staying power was better on me! But I will try again only because it is adorable:)

This is absolutely nothing like the original number five, which is not a bad thing, but I love all the versions anyway. The L’Eau is like a sugary, freshly-squeezed lemonade smell with just a little bit of powder on top. It actually reminds me of Coco Mademoiselle.

I love this. Aldehydes and lemons. Eau Premiere is a stripped down version of No. 5, this is a stripped down version of Eau Premiere.
People seem to think this is a bad thing, but I don’t think so. I think it is nice that Chanel is offering versions of the classic No. 5 that are going to appeal to different groups of people. It’s not strictly an age thing, even though people always want to make it about age. Many people of many ages find Chanel No. 5 too challenging and too unpleasant to wear. That’s okay.
These flankers (or different, more modern interpretations) of No. 5 can allow people who never enjoyed No. 5 to finally enjoy it. I think that’s wonderful.
This opens with amazing, sparkling, luminous aldehydes and dries down to a subtle lemon-vanilla smell that is quite pleasing. It also reminds me of another perfume on the drydown – completely not related to Chanel – and I will update this review as soon as I think of it.
Worth a sniff. Might be a gateway to Chanel or to No. 5 for some people.

citrus, absolutely unique and lovely full of aldehydes, juicy citrus, neroli and ylang plus some musk and cedar

Quite loving this one, yet the aldehydes are rather sharp.
I don’t mind this at all, but wearing this one morning and carpooling with my SO, he actually thought there was something wrong with the car due to some strange organic solvent smell which turned out to be… my perfume.
settles gentle and close to skin.
Has anyone else noticed this effect while using this scent?

I sprayed this beautiful fragrance this afternoon, it is a lovely fragrance floral and sweet. Unfortunately on my skin it does not last more than 30 mins, I love Alien and my summer choice is J’adore, this one could very nice but….. like fresh water…
    What a pity = (

I just tried this. It’s lovely. It’s very similar to Eau Prémière but lighter, with a faint muskiness. Good one.

Elegant, almost neutral, inoffensive and sofisticated.

Very pleasant variation of No5, indeed. It starts with beautiful citruses, transforms on the skin as similar as the first Eau Premier aroma release (which I used to love) and ends with a powder-y skin scent at the end. Recommended to all who used to love the original (2007 – I believe) eau premiere edition.

I cannot wear the “mature” EDP but I enjoy this “youthful” L’Eau very much for its light, fresh opening and the “traditionally” warm dry down. It is just RIGHT on my “definition” of beautiful Ylang Ylang, Lemon and Neroli…The dry down is super smooth, very caressing, gorgeous, classy and so “chic”, as it does NOT have any “candied” nor “tuberose” sweet vibe that sometimes I’m so tired of. L’Eau is not “serious” as its other relatives. It is flirty, and sexy in the most sophisticated and “smart” way possible. And the BEST part is that it does not turn overly “powdery” on me.
I paired L’Eau with a tight, short halter dress, completely open back, in the darkest shade of Black, at a wedding reception, and that whole evening, my husband could not leave my side 🙂 Such a cherished memory that I had with this one 🙂

My personal secret is to layer this with equal parts vanilla incense by atelier cologne. Orris root and aldehyde dominate this beauty

  16. :

    5 out of 5

Softer champagne aldehydes and a sparkly lemonade twist bring the classic No.5 into summer with the twirl of a billowing white skirt. The freshness of L’eau doesn’t detract from the gorgeous DNA of the original, but makes it more wearable in the day-to-day.
Fresher than Au Premiere, with the citrus and neroli in the background, L’eau is a pretty, inoffensive scent, that will hopefully entice a new generation to explore the more classic scents Chanel has to offer.

  17. :

    3 out of 5

Summertime number 5! This one isn’t overpowering in hotter weather. Keeps that nice lemon/ sparkly aldehyde opening that is in the original, but then keep it light and a little musky. I think this did a good job keeping the original DNA, but lightening it up and toning it down. The original is still my favorite version, but a nicely done flanker and still also different enough to Eau Premiere to own both.

  18. :

    5 out of 5

For me this is distinctly iris-y and reminds me very strongly of the discontinued Infusion d’Iris EDT version. In fact, this is, to me, what d’Iris EDT could have been, but failed to achieve. Crisp white paper, iris, citrus, and touches of slightly stinky musk. The longevity is surprisingly decent for something so limpid; I got 4 hours out of 3 small sprays from the 2ml echantillon.

  19. :

    3 out of 5

Let me premise with my view that nothing compares to the original No. 5, particularly the EDP.
L’Eau is undeniably the most youthful iteration and bears little resemblance to the classic. L’Eau is predominantly lemon, sweet mandarin and neroli with exultant and effervescent flirty aldehydes and very subtle jasmine. The opening stages of L’Eau are girly and pretty — something I can’t say of any of its relatives. The drydown is an unassuming, clean crystalline cedar-musk with a hint of sweetness.
As for longevity and sillage, I find that the longevity is moderate and the sillage quickly becomes that of a skin-scent within 10 minutes of application. If you’re searching for an office-appropriate, invigoratingly fresh and sweet, mildly soapy citrus fragrance with an aura of elegance and a veil of soft florals, L’Eau is for you.
As for how L’Eau compares to Eau Premiere:
Eau Premiere is heavier, far less citric and focuses more on the ylang-vanilla accord in tandem with the signature No. 5 aldehydes. The florals are richer and the vanilla adds a powdery quality.

  20. :

The first hour makes my sinuses ache, maybe the blast of citrus or the aldehydes don’t agree with me? Once that calms down it’s much more tolerable, but then the ylang ylang comes through really strong on my skin and makes me a little queasy. 6 hours later I’m still getting whiffs of it. Shame because I have sampled and enjoyed the EDP, and I thought a supposedly lighter and fresher version would be pleasant, but this just smells too sharp and artificial to me.

I tried this scent in perfumery and liked me. Since I’ve been working for 6 years in Marionnaud’s perfume shop and I have a lot of Chanel no 5 supplies at home as well as a lot of other perfumes, I mixed Chanel No 5 edt and DG Light Blue … She’s very similar and powerful is excellent

Top notes: Citrus baby powder (this phase is my favorite but lasts 5 minutes or less)
    Middle Notes: baby powder
Base: hypoallergenic baby wipes or scented diapers
I wanted to love this but it’s just a meh from me. It is reminiscent of Noa Cacharel or Lucky You. I’m glad I bought 2 samples on eBay, that was enough for me. It’s simply soft inoffensive baby powder. I’ve tried to find the elegance in it that a YouTube reviewer spoke of, but it’s not there for me unfortunately.

at first, it smells like neroli and sprite but after an hour or so it smells mature and fresh. I don’t see where it relates to no. 5 though

Plumeria, does this mean someone has finally created a chanel no 5 leau that lasts as long as the original 5?! I have them both, and I definitely prefer leau, but it just doesn’t last

I made an experiment: after checking the notes of No5 L’Eau I decided to recreate it mixing in a small sample spray two parts of No5 EDP with four parts of Bvlgari Mon Jasmin Noir L’Eau Exquise.
Both scents share the jasmine note but this way I have added to the No5 scent base the citrus notes, the cedar and the musk that are so beautiful and delicate in L’Eau but are absent in the EDP.
So far it smells delicious, maybe not exactly the same as L’Eau but very very similar, very nice in the warmer weather and quite long lasting. I love it!

Interesting others are getting a lighter version of Chanel 5, I guess that’s what they were going for. A lighter, fresher updated version of the original. However, aside from the aldehydes in the initial spray, they aren’t similar to me. I have them on side by side right now, and the l’eau to my nose is a different perfume. This is a cottony floral with some citruses (mostly neroli). It smells expensive and nice. I believe my mother in law wears this one, it reminds me of her so I’ll have to ask her. Maybe I’m used to smelling Chanel 5 on people since I was girl (I don’t normally wear it myself, but I have strong memory associations with it) but when that’s applied with a light hand, I much prefer it over this one.

I just got this today, and I’ve gotta say I love it. Exactly like original N°5, but toned down. I have the original and I love it, but it’s definitely a “special occasion” type of fragrance, while this one doesn’t have to be. It’s carefree, but also professional and sofisticated. Green, citrusy, with the signature Chanel aldehydes. It’s truly a fragrance for all ages. One thing that disappointed me, though, was that its silage and longetivity are very poor. I didn’t want to believe it, but it’s very true. I have a feeling my 3.4 will only last about 2-3 months.

  31. :

I really like this. So delicious, very Chanelish. I have No5 Eau Premiere, that slimmer bottle, and I like only initial spray, then it turns too vanillic. This stays fresh and I love those citrus notes. I think I want a full bottle of this.

  32. :

    3 out of 5

I am not a fan of citrus fragrances. But this is a nice sweet, soft citrus. Nice take on the no. 5. Poor longevity though.

  33. :

    5 out of 5

Light aldehydes, and lemon, rose, and jasmines show up most for me. This is a lighter, fresher take on the classic No. 5 and is really lovely-I just wish it was a bit stronger and lasted a lot longer than it does.

  34. :

Very commercial. For yung girls who have heard that No. 5 is a good perfume but because of age cannot handle it. Well known name+citrusy frag=a lot of money. I pass.

So I`ve been a fan of chanel perfumes for soo long and this one was on my wish list. So today I saw it at sale and I wanted to test it first, because the really big 200 ml bottle was on sale and it wasn`t so cheap anyway. I must say, it smells AMAZING …. for like 30 minutes… I was so disappointed by the lasting power. I cannot believe its Chanel…After maybe 2 hours it was COMPLETELY gone.

  36. :

    4 out of 5

This is a lighter and weaker version of the Chanel N°5. It is similar to the original, but does not have the same weight and projection. I think that people who like Chanel N°5, but find if overpowering might like this.
Objectively, I’d say that this is a well composed perfume. It is definitely not a bad perfume per se. But it is not for me. Mainly because it does not fit my personality and view on how I want to smell. I am not a fan of aldehydes, and this still feels too heavy for me. Trying this despite not liking aldehydes might sound unnecessary, but I felt I really wanted to give the N°5-line one more honest chance.
I think this will be perfect for a very specific audience. But my guess is that it will leave several of the traditional N°5-lovers and -haters disappointed, due to it being basically a noticeable weaker version of the original. For anyone who doesn’t have a strong opinion (in any direction) of the original N°5, this might be worth a try..

  37. :

    5 out of 5

According to Chanel official website the notes for the perfume are:
    •lemon,mandarin,orange
    •rose,jasmine,ylang
    •cedarwood,cottony musk
Fragrantica obviously adds more notes; I can justify aldehydes and neroli only.
Well, of course it’s going to appeal, and it did, to Millenials and the younger, simply because it has the main two characteristics they ask in a perfume:
    1. Low sillage. Too low sillage. If you don’t bring the nose to the wrist it’s not there. That’s what we call “not offensive to others”
    2. Weak longevity. Technically they want a perfume that’s not strong, not stuffy, that doesn’t linger much because it’s tiring; only a perfume with weak longevity is going to achieve that.
The thing is, they ask 80$/100€ and over for a perfume of 2 hours longevity, which to me is strictly a no. Sprayed at 19:30 and at 21:30 I catch barely there faint whiffs. Insane.
You can differentiate it from Eau Premiere, which is creamier with the vanilla and the aldehydes being still enough prominent, but L’eau is generally crispier and the notes sound clearer. It carries the Chanel dna, don’t worry, it’s evident in the drydown.
Gave it four good spritzes on the same spot on my arm and some around my neck. There is the blast of powder and aldehydes, only these are not the “raw” ones used in the Ernest Beaux edition, but they are well-behaved, polite, intense, prim, very well blended with the ylang-neroli that seems to appear right after. Very complementary to each other. Very aromatic! If only it could settle just like that it would be amazing!
The aroma is quickly enhanced by a subdued vintage powdery base with lots of lemon and musk. The powder does not shout its presence at all, don’t worry.
Youthful, uplifting, sour, sunny. It’s a decent scent. Would I buy it? No, the longevity is terrible. If it works for you rock it.

Nice scent soapy fresh chic citrusy young BUT very very poor longevity and silage I can only smell traces of it when I press my nose hard to my skin after 1 hour.

I was never a major fan of the original No.5, try as might,it was too much for me, but this version I adore. L’eau is a softer, fresher, quite sheer take on the classic scent, the citrus, flowers and musk are floating, as if amidst billowy clouds. Genius!

I just got a sample of this, and I love it, smells like you’re hanging the newly washed clothes in your garden and summer breeze carries the smell of orange blossoms, wearing nothing but your panties, mesmerizing, soft and youthful

I bought L´eau last year and I just saw the bottle with still a little bit of essence in my bathroom…oh god, this is sooo marvellous!!!
    I don´t like no. 5, but I love this scent and I´m a 40s woman.
This is happy, extremely elegant, polite, sparkling.
For me, L´eau has a “le exclusifs” Quality…it´s “easy to wear” but also very sophisticated in its simplicity.
    I will definitely repurchase it.

  42. :

    5 out of 5

Not really a citrus for me. It felt like No 5 with thankfully a note that rose to the top after a couple hours that made me like it. This, like Beige, takes awhile to get to a point where it changes from heavy to the true fragrance… at least on me. I have a sample but won’t purchase an entire bottle. Besides, Chanel only takes a tiny amount as I never fully spray it so the sample will last forever.

  43. :

    4 out of 5

I just found a sample of L’Eau of last year and am puzzled wearing it. Did it change since it came out?
I wore the recent formulation for a few days (a newer sample) and liked it a lot, but was also a little bewildered that I didn’t like it so much last year. Now, I have the feeling maybe the juice is the reason, not me;-)
    Anyone with the same perception?
I think it’s less aldehydic and citrus/ylang enhanced now. But have to retest…maybe it’s simply my mood of today.

  44. :

    5 out of 5

A beautiful modern version of the original. It’s definitely Chanel. This version to me, is a BREATH TAKING fragrance. I’m wearing it now and I can’t stop smelling myself. The notes dance around on my skin. It’s making me appreciate the aldehyde note more. I get the aldehydes, lemon, rose, musk, cedar, ylang-ylang, and jasmine notes the most. The orange/citrus notes (with the exception of the lemon) are more subtle (at least on me) and I tend to notice them a little more during the dry down along with the orrisroot and a very very light whispy vanilla that I only notice on occasion but that doesn’t bother me even though vanilla is one of my favorite notes. I normally generously spray because it’s light and I like to make it last. I have no problem with re-applying if I needed to. I often layer it with the No. 5 lotion it came with in the set. Chanel No. 5 L’eau has become one of my favorites. I’ll soon be running out of my 3.4 sized bottle that I got last xmas. Makes me want to give the other versions a try! This one is a keeper. Enough said.

  45. :

    5 out of 5

As someone who is in the target market for this fragrance, I love it! I’ve never worn Chanel No 5, but this certainly feels like a more modern version of an old classic. I feel like the type of girl who would enjoy this would be a young woman who is very much a “classic” type of girl herself; everything about her style and persona is timeless. If this sounds like you, then definitely pick this up.

  46. :

    4 out of 5

Smoky, yet light citruses with just a tiny bit of aldehydes. I am not a big fan of the original Chanel N5, but this one smells so good and clean on me. I see it on girl with a delicate frame and a sophisticated sense of fashion, probably like the image of this perfume, Johnny Depp’s daughter. Too bad it has a poor performance profile: hardly any sillage nor projection.

  47. :

    4 out of 5

I want to love this. In fact, I do love it when its applied lightly. It’s so soft and fresh and wonderful… But then you can barely smell it an hour later, even if you press your nose against your skin.
If I do apply this “heavily”, all notes except the citrus and a tiny bit of vanilla disappears and on my skin, this whole thing turns ACIDY. Like real, chemical, acid. If you keep it a few decimeters away from your face, it’s soft and vanilla and fresh, but the closer you get, the more it stings you… I guess its the sparkly aldehydes, but I don’t wear perfume because I want to get further away from my skin. I want perfume to suck me in and work as a magnet.
Horrible silage, and just not the easiest fragrances to pull of. You really need to try it and I envy you who can wear it, because it probably smells so fresh on you!
EDIT: Yesterday I went and tried the L´eau again, just to see if it still was a disappointment, and to my surprise, I think that they have changed the formula! The smell is the same, except the acid-lemon, and the sillage and longevity is much much better! Hm… Am I reconsidering this perfume?
1 spray on forearm, no fabric touching, outdoors
30 min 5-10 cm from skin
    1,5 h 5 cm from skin
    2 h 3-5 cm from skin
    3 h nose touching skin
4 h only slight scent left
4,5 h the slightest scent on the skin
    EDIT:
1 spray on forearm, no fabric touching, indoors
lasts up to 8 hours a few cm from the skin, no joke!

Chanel #5 is one of those scents that I’m not sure how i feel about it, so i never had given #5 l’eau any thought. Recently there was an advertisement in one of my magazines for l’eau, so I took a sniff. I love l’eau! It has #5 DNA written all over it, but l’eau is a modernized yet still classy scent that does have differences that people that don’t like #5, may like this one. L’eau is a clean light citrusy floral & posh soap scent. Of course, the most distinctive note is the aldehydes. That signature Chanel ylang ylang is also in the forefront as well as lemon. I’m in love with l’eau.

  49. :

    4 out of 5

Having never smelled No. 5 before, I was slightly surprised with this scent. I used to have this thrift shopping hobby, and this scent vaguely reminds me of sweaters that I have tried on. A vintage classy soap. Unfortunately the soap association is too strong for me to really appreciate this scent. Perhaps it is caused by the aldehyde – citrus – white floral combination. It doesn’t smell bad though, I just can’t undo the soap association.
Edit: the dry down is nice though! Warm, interesting, luxurious.

  50. :

    3 out of 5

I think that Chanel has done a very clever move with L’Eau. This is not aimed to the classic and faithful users of Chanel No5 as their nose is already trained to appreciate and love aldehydes, so they would perceive L’Eau as too weak and it would disappear in a couple of hours. This is also not explicitly a summer version of No5 because, to be honest, I think that No5, especially as EDT and Eau Premiere, is perfectly suitable for warmer climates, so a fresher version of it is not really necessary.
This version is primarly aimed to all those, mainly younger customers, who would love to use this iconic perfume but are too scared or put off by aldehydes. This light, airy, citrusy scent with just a hint of lemony aldehydes is the soft introduction to the world of No5, a step by step way to get acquainted to aldehydes, to learn to like them and to sense the other notes beyond and around them.
I guess that once you have been wearing this fragrance for a while you will be ready and probably willing to step up to try the bolder versions of No5.
In this sense I’m very thankful to Chanel because I hope that the new generations will learn one day to appreciate the old classics and not put them away as old lady fragrances. It is a bit of olfactory education in a bottle.

I always wanted to smell like my nana. (Grandma) she never left her house without spraying on classics like Cinnabar, Opium, L’air du Temps, Mitsouko, Vol de Nuit and etc! She always had a passion for perfumes (years later, I developed the same passion)
But I always loved it when she sprayed on Shalimar and No5! But the thing is I didn’t want to smell like a granny back in the 90’s when chic perfumes were wild like CK1. I always wish that they should release a softer and powdery fragrance. Fast forward to 2016.
As I was strolling through Chanel, because I felt like I have to visit, I came across the fragrance section and… there it was, sitting next to a picture of Lily-Rose Depp. I fell inlove with it that I sniffed the spray for almost an hour and ofc, I didn’t leave the store without buying it! Right now, I am wearing it for almost everyday! Buying groceries, date night with the boyfie, riding subway, meeting friends for a lunch and movie date, EVERYTHING! Thank you Chanel for inventing the no5 line!

Light aldehyde – lemony – musky
    Color impression: pistachio green
Chanel Nº5 was and still is one of the world’s biggest achievements in floral aldehyde fragrances that demonstrates feminine power and glory of art deco. Yet, new taste avoids because floral aldehydes are least welcomed genre for Instagram generation and that is making Chanel’s blood cold, which eventually led them to come up with this brilliant revision of their heavy-duty animalic jasmine to keep its legacy intact.
L’Eau begins like a hybrid of aldehydic flower of Nº5 and soapy powdery freshness of Prada Infusion d’Iris. It continues with harmony of luminous lemon and grapefruit waft, soapy aldehyde renditions, brutal civet edge replaced by soothing musk, plus light touch of something highly related to their Les Exclusifs collection that makes it less pushy and more posh.
There’s a wide gap between the mother and this new edition when the topic comes to tenacity. While it stays quite satisfying on skin the sillage is barely-there. Anyway, it’s still so cool and cult! It’s not that giant as Nº5 is but it’s also quite apart from silly celebrity toffee and tutti fruity girly stuff.

I have always loved Chanel No. 5. It is absolutely timeless. It’s so precious in my mind that I tend to only wear it on “special occasions.” I bought L’Eau to help solve that problem. I wanted it to be a good daily wear for me. I’ve owned it for a little while now, but have been treating it the same way! It’s been tucked away in my perfume trunk. So today I decided to wear it. It’s so soft that I had to spray it at least twelve times this morning in order to try to get it to adhere (I even put on body lotion ahead of time to make it “stick” more). Even if I bury my head in my wrist I just can’t smell it. I’m not sure what’s wrong. I almost grabbed some No. 5 to give it an extra oomph, but I knew I wanted to write a review so I held back. When Eau Premiere came out a few years ago I was excited to buy a bottle, but ultimately returned it because I had the same problem of it being too soft. I guess this is a good bedtime scent, since it’s going to barely register to my senses. It’s the only way to make lemonade out of lemons. I’m a bit sad.

I LOVE this version of No. 5. I’m 40 years old and grew up smelling No. 5 on my mother, and then came of age in the 1990s CK1 era of fragrance. L’eau is the perfect marriage of my fragrance origins…it is recognizably No. 5 and has a fresh citrusy brightness to it. I’ve been wearing it for 3 months now and my young children climb on my lap at the end of the day when my perfume and body chemistry are co-mingled and tell me “mommy, you smell SO GOOD!” I’m delighted to have this new version of the classic to imprint in their olfactory memories of their mother! 🙂

Ok, if you told me a year ago that this would become one of my favorites I would have laughed and said you were crazy, but I’m actually loving this more than my No. 5 pure extract right now – and i’ve loved the original No. 5 since I was 13 and I’m 34 now. When I first smelled L’eau, my very first thought was “ooo, yeah, there’s No. 5” but it wasn’t like a memory of something where the memory matches the object, it’s more like remembering something from long ago when you see something or smell something that shares a commonality with it, but not exactly. It has some of the soul of No. 5 combined with something different entirely, like meeting a distant relative for the first time and recognizing your mother’s eyes or your grandmother’s hands; you recognize bits and pieces, but the overall picture is otherwise independent.
It’s so wearable and fresh, it feels like i’m transported into a fluffy, aldehydic, cloud above a citrus grove. You can practically cover your whole body in this and it’s not overwhelming or cloying in any way. It’s got great staying power depending on how much you spray on, and it doesn’t disappear into boring dullness on the drydown, it’s just super subtle and fresh/powdery.

I’m testing this right now, but so far I am really loving it! My mom’s signature scent was Chanel No. 5 when I was a kid. Chanel No. 5 has always been kind of headache inducing for me, so I’ve never tried to wear it (and was glad when my mom moved on to something lighter!) I smell the notes of Chanel No. 5 underneath the bright florals and citrus. It’s a lovely balance. The aldehydic and white floral notes in it remind me of Estee Lauder White Linen. What a great way to put a modern spin on a classic fragrance!

Always appreciated the complexity and luxury of classic #5 but disliked the too musky for me civet and suggestion in the mid and after notes of something just a little rotten. Also too heavy for me. Discovered the lighter but still rich Eau Premiere and have worn it through two versions. I prefer the 2015. But I find both versions only suitable for evening wear and in cool weather. Have been wearing Prada’s Infusion D’iris for warm weather and day wear. With the weather turning cooler I recently tried L’eau and love this more sparkling, lighter incarnation of the #5 line. Perfect for everyday. Have to see if I like it in the summer heat but for now it will be L’eau for day and the creamier more powdery Eau Premiere for nights out. It retains the sophistication and complexity of the others but is less intrusive, perfect for those of us who don’t care for scents that precede us into a room for day or casual wear.

I bought this recently as a light fragrance for work. I work close to people and needed something soft and inoffensive, yet still sophisticated. This fit the bill. It’s floral, but also creamy and powdery in the best way. I have never tried the original No 5 so I can’t compare but I do like this a lot. I do spray it liberally and can still detect a faint hint of it at the end of the day. I just love Chanel fragrances.
