This is what I wanted YSL’s Black Opium to be. When I tested Black Opium in the store when it first came out, it did smell roughly very close to this, and I bought a full bottle of Black Opium. Well, for some reason, my bottle of Black Opium smells straight-up vanilla on me. This “Perlier Caribbean Vanilla & Coffee” smells much closer to the spray I sampled/tested of Black Opium in the store.
This is light, not heavy. Moderate projection, sillage and longevity are all moderate. I like the reviewer Blue Wolf (the very first review of this, scroll the whole way down), with the helpful advice of shaking this first. I will have to try that with this, and also with some of my perfume bottles.
But obviously you must want to smell coffee notes to enjoy this, and you must also like/love vanilla. I picked up a rollerball of this for $19.50USD and am not disappointed. The travel spray of Black Opium is currently $28.00USD, both for the same .33 ounce, so I guess if you are on a budget, this is a nice option. Not saving a ton of money, but still a better price; and to me, they are so similar that if you have one, you do not need the other. I tend to love coffee notes, so I wanted this and I am glad to have both this and Black Opium. This also to me smells more natural and less manufactured than Black Opium. But, skin and chemistry can have weird effects like that. Dare I say, I think I actually like this better than Black Opium. My only very minor ‘complaint’ is, being an oil, this feels like this takes forever to absorb into my skin. I apply this to my wrists, and the oil literally sits on my wrists like it was freshly applied, for about half an hour. But, I am new to the world of oils and this is very trivial and likely could be helped by rubbing the wrists together. But a fragrance worker once told me to not rub wrists together after applying, to just let the fragrance settle on it’s own.

So I expected the vanilla note to be extremely heavy but it’s not at all. I actually get more coffee than I do vanilla. I really like this, way better than I expected. Not your typical vanilla. I have a 3.3 oz bottle and I will never use the whole bottle so I have decided to sell or swap decants if interested.

To carribean to boast a coffee note. Basically not present. Better find your coffee love somewhere else….like STARBUCKS!! All in all a nice frag and worth the 25 I bought it for. Ill use it for winter and b try another next year!! O wait – 2016 is in 3 weeks. Ahh, love this thing we do. Keep calm….sniff on!!

I have decided to edit my first review since I purchased Perlier Caribbean Vanilla & Coffee. Initially I disliked the vanilla, which was too buttery for my taste. Now I have thoroughly shaken the bottle several times, and the result is much more blended. The vanilla is smooth and while it has more of a scent like that of vanilla in something foody, it is slightly sweet and not too buttery at all. The lasting power is quite good, though I admittedly have a heavy hand when I spray a fragrance. I could smell it faintly on my wrists the next day at least 12 hours later. The coffee still wasn’t the strongest note, but it does remain throughout and what is there seems to run the gamut of fresh coffee as well as a mellow scent like that in the kitchen after you’ve brewed a pot. I get a clear nutty note which I prefer to coconut as I feel it adds a richness and depth since coconut tends to wipe out or dominate other lighter notes, the big bully. The base is a pleasant inoffensive musk and has no spiciness whatsoever; sometimes I get a general floral note which I like very much. The coffee does mature and change in a very appealing way, it just lacks strength for me. I do prefer heavy fragrances since my skin tends to absorb scents at an alarming rate; but after several uses I am very pleased with Perlier’s product and I’m not willing to part with it.
