I bought this because I am a Sophia Grojsman admirer. Calyx has a crunchy green almost bitter feel, exactly like guava. It’s mostly guava on me, which I do like, but which I have also experienced in Britney Spears Believe and Avon Outspoken Fresh. Guava is a good note, and Calyx is pretty when you are in the right mood for a green-fruity slightly tropical scent.
Normally I don’t go for layering, but this does go well with Jovan Island Gardenia. Makes a sort of tropical melange.
Summer is fading here, so I am saying good-bye to some of my seasonal favorites. I like to wait as long as possible to break out my autumn scents.
Funny thing is I remember trying this and LOVING it when it was a Prescriptives fragrance a long time ago. It’s not like I remembered, but still good – it’s a Grojsman, after all.

My first impression on trying this was a somewhat pleasant guava concoction but within 10 minutes this thing turned on me LOL into a disgusting rancid lemon nightmare not unlike a strong cleaning solution. There must be something in this that violently disagrees with my chemistry – probably the tropical fruits because I know I’m ok with everything else. I have never liked tropical scents, maybe this is why. I wanted so much to wear EL Beyond Paradise once and it too was not for me. Oh well, there are many other fish in the sea!

I feel like this one is a “love it or hate it” kind of scent, and I love it. I call it “Grapefruitbomb.” It’s tart at first and softening as it dries down and fades. I think it’s different and fun!

I really don’t like it….Calyx is fresh, succulent, sweet, tropical fruit cocktail and green scent but not yet The smell like soap mix detergent…It’s make me feel dizzy and vomit.

Ok, I have a bigger spray sample of this and I don’t know if the sample that I got is bad but this perfume smells like urine. Someone else in the comment section said it smelled like “kids juice box that has gone off” and that hit the nail on the head.

I just tested this today and it’s wonderful. It’s a fresh, succulent, tropical fruit cocktail with just enough green notes to keep it from being too sweet. A must have for summer!

I fell in love with this perfume the moment I sniffed it.
Very fruity and fresh, but earthy and luscious (in a natural way) at the same time.
Humid, indeed, reminds me of a tropical forest or a grassy meadow after rainfall.
    Very iconic to me!

This is certainly not a scent I expected to love but I was very pleasantly surprised! To me it reads as: Grapefruit, guava, green leaves and rose, in order of intensity. This sweet/sour/bitter accord quenches a thirst I didn’t even know I had. I wear mostly heavy, darker, smoky frags and this is the perfect antidote to all that. Smelling Calyx is like taking off your glasses, stepping away from the computer, and going for a walk outside in the fresh spring air.
To me there is nothing loud or over the top to this scent, I find it perfectly balanced and elegant in a natural and innocent way. The weird, scratchy texture of the scent of guava is presented superbly here and this really has me thinking that we are long overdue for a big guava-inspired blockbuster scent, maybe a masculine this time? I think green scents are inherently kind of cerebral and not conventionally ‘sexy’ and I’m fine with that. Calyx is like that person who’s always quick and witty, but never at the expense of anyone’s feelings. There’s a warmth of spirit (not literally, Calyx is all cool tones) that gives a sense of cheerfulness and good humour.
100% deserving of its 5 star status, especially when you consider that it smells like it could have been released yesterday AND its the only green scent that’s upbeat and positive (okay maybe not after fig scents became a thing) that I can think of. So not just good but totally unique and timeless.
Also guys should try this its not a sweet cupcake scent by any means despite all those sweet sounding notes listed. A little hissy and high pitched at first but let it calm down.
This has given me such respect for Ms. Grojsman that I think I’m going to have to go revisit Outrageous.

Too bad I didn’t got any greens or any florals. But yes It’s mainly very bright and fruity but It’s sooo synthetic! Almost medicinal, like children’s fruit flavored medicine syrup…
    2/10

Just added this to my collection, sprayed the back of my hand and… Hmmm… This reminds me of something. I wandered down the garden, sniffing my hand and it came to me.
    Volupte, Oscar de la Renta.
THAT’S what was nibbling away at the back of my mind. I’ve checked the notes and they have few in common, so I’m wondering if it’s the Sophia Grojsman touch I’m picking up on – I didn’t realise she was the nose on both until I checked.

Calyx is a fresh, sweet, green scent. I smelled it on a whim at Ulta and I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. I purchased a sample spritzer and didn’t love it on me. Too fresh, too sweet, too green. I think it smells nice in the bottle. Very unique fragrance.

  12. :

I am a fan…at first spritz on paper I thought it smelled sour and unappealing, but gave it a try on skin and it smelled so different…very fresh, a fruity floral that is not heavy on either, not syrupy or sweet…the green leaves come through and balance this…what a perfect summer day perfume, light, green, clean and refreshing…

I got two samples today and I want to share with all of you that the perfume is amazing!
Clinique has softened the Prescriptives sharp and annoying formula and transformed Calyx not only into a green and refreshing breeze, but also into a must-have masterpiece!

  14. :

The papaya, guava and freesia are what stays throughout the longevity. You get a nice, sweet citrus and green smell on first spritz. It’s an entirely unique fragrance.
I was an account executive for Pescriptives for 5 years, and we had to wear Calyx every day. It’s pretty easy for a man to wear this because the fruits in this are not juvenile.
I finished my last Px bottle in March of 2016 and in April I purchased the Clinique bottle. The Clinique version is exactly the same as the Prescriptives ; it hasn’t changed at all. If you think it has, it’s just your memory playing tricks on you.

I wore this when it was made by Prescriptives. It was so tropical and fruity and green. I thought it was perfect for my Fijian vacation. I was right. A local woman selling fruit at a market told me I smelled good. I spritzed some on her skin. She thought it was wonderful. So I gave her my bottle. She was so happy! She had a lovely perfume and I have that lovely memory.

I got a tiny bottle of this fragrance as a present buying some Clinique staff. I hanged a hand towel on the inside of the bathroom door and spray it from time to time. It smells refreshing.

I really don’t like this fragrance! It smells like a kids juice box that has gone off. Of the many perfumes I own, this is my least favourite, I only have it because I bought it blind. I strongly recommend trying this before buying it.

Fresh, clean, unique and long lasting scent! On my skin, Clinque Calyx boasts grapefruit and oranges. In my opinion, it also smells of grass ib a very pleasant way. The scent is very uplifting.

Calyx by Sophia Grojsman is a delightful array of scents that pleasured my nose from beginning to end. It’s hard to classify this even as a chypre. It’s an outdoorsy scent, a bit tropical, not too sweet, and fresh and summery. It seems to be one of Sophia’s later perfumes which tended to smell very different than her early and middle period perfumes. This is already a mature scent for a mature nose that finds pleasure in discovering all the notes and scents in this magnificent potion. Longevity and sillage is incredible and it feels appropriate for summer time, even for the beach.
The opening is a cornucopia of fruit. It smells of delectable papaya, guava, citrus, and mango. My nose first sensed a grapefruit and orange. Then it turned into a sweet guava/papaya. Absolutely love the way the fruit notes wear the first time you spray it. It evokes the summer time and a party. It’s also quite fresh and cheerful.
The floral heart is composed of lilies, freesia, marigold and jasmine. I could still smell the fruit but it does soften into a lily scent. Very pretty white florals in the middle stage of the performance of this perfume. It can also still smell quite tropical like little white island flowers. The marigold scent I always found to be fruited so it is no surprise to see it among the florals here. I have enjoyed marigold scents in other fruity perfumes.
The dry down is oak moss but it’s not a heavy moss. It continues to feel fresh, delicate, sparkling and fruity. The aroma of a vetiver and grass, green and herbal begins to appear as the scent dries down and fades away. This is a gorgeous summer time fragrance. It’s clean, fresh and fruity, refreshing and perfect for over 80-90 degree weather.
It does not smell mature nor too girly. It’s for men and women who enjoy fruit scents, florals and oak moss, but it’s not making a big statement. It also reminds me of a Hawaiian floral print shirt.
Beautiful. Sophia Grojsman we love you.

I did not like the kind of sweet top note but the heart notes are okay. It is a ‘meh’ fragrance for me. It does smell mature, but not old. It’s a well structured fragrance but it did not captivate me. This was the very first Clinique scent that I tried in the store.

  21. :

    3 out of 5

This is weird in a good way. It’s like a cocktail of exotic fruits, amplified by white florals. I smell guava, mango, papaya and passion fruit with a strong accord of neroli, lily and jasmine. The scent is very heavy and I am not sure if I could wear it in summer. A very unique scent though.

  22. :

I don’t think this smells at all like original Prescriptives. It smells like cheap shampoo. Like so many lovelies, Calyx is lost to the past.

  23. :

    4 out of 5

Finally I get back to my beloved Calyx, but this time from Clinique. I’m happy because her scent, sillage duration and have not changed at all. This was identical to when Prescriptives. Another work of art masterpiece Sophia Grojsman. Just just saw a video where she talks about her creation with love and as I described him and his notes. That perfumed so wonderful!

  24. :

    3 out of 5

I love this scent. It is unabashedly fruity and happy, with a slight element of discord that gives it interest. The guava really stands out, along with watermelon, even though that note isn’t listed. It may be a combination of notes that I’m reading “melon” into. I am probably the only person to mention this, but it reminds me vaguely of that old VO5 in the blue bottle. I can’t remember for the life of me what it was called.
To be entirely honest, my husband doesn’t like Calyx. He says it smells like fruit that has begun to mold, but he’s a curmudgeon lol I wear it and relish it’s happy, fruity personality.

  25. :

    4 out of 5

This is a weird juicy green scent. It smells like grass and white flowers mostly. And tropical fruits as well. I can sense lily of the valley, jasmine and lily quite strongly. I don’t like the composition, it’s not my taste.
Not balanced in my opinion, too floral, juicy, tropical at the same time. Notes don’t mix together well.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

Unfortunately this is too fruity and juicy for my taste. It has a moderate longevity and sillage yet I would prefer it to be more quiet probably. It opens with a sharp splash of tropical sweetness. After all this loud and heavy headache or nausea inducing start I’m left exhausted to enjoy the dry down even if I would otherwise.
Simply not my cup of tea.

  27. :

    3 out of 5

Very nice; crisp fruity and refreshing. I get mostly peach and apple of the fruits and a lovely soft woody green base. Not very good longevity from this sample, bout an hour. All in all it has the feel and performance of a body spray so for this reason not fb worthy. Btw the heart reminds me of Chanel cristalle edt which has better longevity and sillage.

  28. :

    5 out of 5

Tropical fruits -especially guava- totally ruin this perfume for me. Otherwise it’s truly one of the best fresh & green scents. Very elegant and quality. Skipping the fruity notes, actually this is what I would expect from Sisley’s Eau de Campagne which is on the other hand ruined by a soapy aftershave note.
Calyx is truly unique. It won’t speak to the fruity notes lovers due to its deep, green elements. And it will similarly won’t satisfy the green notes lovers as it is masterfully done in original Sisley Eau du Soir. Rather, you need to love *both* notes to enjoy Calyx.

updating my review; As much as I love calyx I returned the newest bottle and will use my current bottle and wont repurchase because it really doesn’t last well and for 70.00 it should but its more like a body spray just the same as tha Elizabeth arden fragrance in the green bottle I love that one too but sporty citrus fruity scents do not last and I am redirecting my future purchases to oriental spicy or heavier perfumey type scents from now on I am tired of wasting money on products that just aren’t worth the money my next purchase will be estee lauder youth dew I have heard a lot about it and I believe I will have a winner with that one or cinnabar? or both lol

Lemony grapefruit. Also, has that fresh green scent. Smells like a nice shampoo, in a good way. On me, it is of light sillage with 4 squirts. Great for summer and spring. Faded too fast though, maybe an hour? Might try in hair and on clothing. Clinique perfumes just don’t seem to work out for me. Happy smelling! 🙂

  31. :

    5 out of 5

The original was an interesting, intriging perfume. Fresh, but complex, with a great personality. I was very happy when I knew that Clinique was going to re-release it (if they would do the same with Wrappings…). But I felt terribly dissapointed when I smelled it. Peach, just peach, a synthetical smell of peach…like some sort of peach chewing-gum along with some spearmint…and that was all…
Real shame, the sheer-looking bottle, the simple but chic advertising…In addition, it’s seriously overpriced.

  32. :

Here’s another fragrance whose notes list is totally misleading for my smell buds.
Judging from the pyramid, I was expecting a messy fruit festival with the added tragedy of tropicality, which incidentally turns hateful Body Odour on me (passion fruit being the main culprit here).
But this is different. Fruits and fruits on the opening, yes, but the drydown has something that I’d never ever expect from this: a hearty and earthy concoction of warm woods and resins that really goes straight to my “Love it” neurons.
It must be the sandalwood and oakmoss (ehi, is it really oakmoss?) that aren’t so deep buried in it, but rather earn attention and reveal themselves through a witchy disguise.
I know I’m mad, this isn’t supposed to be a woody fragrance and freshness does not agree with resins. Green notes are golden green here rather than cold green, but that’s what I get, and that’s how I like my perfume!

  33. :

    5 out of 5

I get green apple with floral notes. Clean and crisp but also clearly perfume. Seems a bit dated, just because of the popularity of green apple fragrances in the late 70s-early 80s, but a very nice crisp summer scent. I do like it

I remember hating this when I was younger, but Ulta had some freebies and I decided to give it another try….. So glad I did!!! It’s fresh, clean and sweet all wrapped into one! As a general rule I hate green scents, but this is amazing. I’ve worn gourmands for years but this has swayed me 🙂

  35. :

    4 out of 5

Very juicy and fresh, but far too green and exotic fruity for me. I don’t like this type of scent and my skin seems to share this view. However, green scents rarely bloom on my skin, so I recommend you to test it yourself.

  36. :

    5 out of 5

The base notes are missing a lot of the warmth and almost spicy “oomph” of the original Calyx, and the top notes are both screechier and lighter. You can tell it’s the “same” scent, but it’s definitely not the same.
I recommend hunting down a Prescriptives bottle on eBay, or swapping for one here. That said, some of the ones you find are super rancid, so look for the newest old version (bottle and cap style), if that makes sense.

I had this by Prescriptives 3 years ago and loooved…. great to wear in hot climates like I did in Cuba.
Can someone please tell me if this is exactly the same or has it been messed with? Hoping it is the very same formulation and only the owners are different…..
Okay I just went to the old Calyx reviews and looked at the ingredients, and counted them and they show 26 ingredients where as the new Calyx is showing only 18 ingreds. I haven’t sorted this out to see which are missing, but it just can’t be the same…sad… :((
okay back again after figuring out what is missing. The old one had some apricot, cyclamen, cassia, mint, bergamot, peach, cedar, and melon which have been removed completely and replaced with a couple other ingredients.
    Whyyy??? 🙁 really sad now)

I have not smelled this yet, but this was a pleasant surprise to hear! I love Calyx by Prescriptives. My friends and I wore it in high school as our sophisticated yet youthful scent, the first of the fruity florals. I will definitely have to comment on the updated version

  40. :

Initial burst of citrus followed by thick headachey chemical tutti frutti kind of smell. Possibly melon/guava in there, but mostly just a migraine in lime green. No thank you. I don’t know if the one with the lime green top which I recently got from clinique is vastly different to this pictured one with a silver top, but the lime one is nasty.

Is it possible, that they changed it? Smells more powdery and mute than the Prescriptives version that I have…

I Love Clinique happy and happy heart. For that reason I was very excited when smelled the new calyx. It smells fresh, green, flowery and sweet. For some reason if I put too much of it gets very heavy on me(I think is the guava smell). So I have to be careful with it. If I sprits just once or twice is fine, light and sweet. On me It last for 4-5 hours at least on summer day. I haven’t try that one winter time yet, I hope will last even longer. Overall, good long lasting, nothing unusual, will make save gift idea.

Lemonzest, the fragrance is not weak. But you can’t smell it. That doesn’t mean your sense of smell is not good it means you can’t detect those particular notes. I for example can’t smell versace bright crystal. My best friend loves it and I gave it away to her. It happened the same as you with calyx. I gave it a sniff and thought I like it but that was for 2 seconds and I lost it. My nose can’t detect that perfume.

Mom gave me a sample of this and I loved it. It’s tropical and slightly sweet but not overpowering.
It has a clean feel and also has something that’s so unique about it….I think it might be the green leaves.
I can’t wait to buy a full bottle of this. Thanks Mom!

  45. :

I first experienced Calyx as a sample – at first spray, I thought “Wow, that’s not bad” – very green, fresh, effervescent, fruity but not over the top. I hadn’t thought about the sample until someone mentioned the fragrance while discussing them with a friend, and this morning I dug out the sample as I was in the mood for something fresh and peppy… and this worked a treat!
It lasts for a long time (I’m certain a spray from the proper bottle, not a sample would see it last longer) and it evolves into and leaves a shampoo – freshly clean smell and vibe which I like a lot.
Sunny days, optimism are bottled here. A great pick me up as an alternative to muskier, darker scents. And while it has a fruity-sweetness, it’s not full on. A rather well done composition.

This is a nice fragrance. Not outstanding at all, but I will enjoy during the hot summer months. Man on man I am getting so I somewhat hate summer high heat. Love the sunshine not the blistering heat. Will probably use this around the house or while doing the barbecue thing with friends.
Edit: Loving this the more I wear it. Fresh, clean, slightly sweet smell. Like breathing in the first cool breeze of spring. Great in hot weather.

I once walked around a rain forest…that was in the middle of a train station, somewhere in Europe. While I slowly walked, making my way amongst giant, shiny green leaves my fingertips grazed bright orange and purple exotic flowers and plump tropical fruits. I could still hear the birds humming, singing and feel tiny droplets of water that sprinkled my face, my bare arms and….calyx. This is what it reminds me of. I didn’t buy this perfume for myself. My sister received a little sample and gave it to me. When I first sprayed it on, it seemed that a guava, mango and passion fruit were trapped inside the tiny bottle and quickly bursted out. Then fresh cut, raw greenery. It is such a humble, umpretentious loudness. Like a Rousseau painting. Big, jungly, infinetly naive…
I am not sure when, or if I would wear it. Perhaps I’ll save it for the days of winter for in that tiny bottle lyes a world of green lushesness. My very own, private tropical forest.

(re-adding this here now that the new version was added to the DB)
Calyx is a fruity floral that’s anything but typical, and it was a favourite of mine this summer. It has a lot going on, too much to be expected to be good really, and it’s not subtle at all, but somehow it works, and very well too.
The opening is extremely green, very soapy and quite sharp (although I don’t think it dips over into harsh territory). It catches the attention at once, because it’s not what you’d expect from a fruity floral at all. Later it mellows down, it becomes more and more fruity sweet as time goes by, really delicious. Still, that unique soapy accord stays (more subtly) present throughout, preserving the interesting and instantly recognizable character of Calyx.
I’ve always thought of this as a grapefruit scent, but I don’t really know why. After all, there are about a hundred notes, and although the ones listed here are still for the Prescriptives version I suspect it’s about the same for the current Clinique version. So it’s difficult to pick out anything distinctly; you get an impression of the mix, which contributes to the fragrance’s charm that is a little old-fashioned in character.

  49. :

    4 out of 5

What a fresh fruity blast! I get apricot, passionfuit, freesia. After a few minutes the other fruits and florals chime in. It’s a very tropical blend, but very, very light and created with great finesse. Tropicals have such a heavy odor as far as fragrances go and many people can’t stand the gamey smell. I grow papaya, mango, guava and citrus, the scent travels for miles.
I love this delicate floral blend which is surprising as I’m more of a chypre person than a floral fruity. Calyx manages to keep enough tart green in the mix to keep it from going into the ripe, rotton, fruity arena and the floral middle notes are perfectly balanced, nothing shouting out at me. This is such a great balance. I think Sophia Grojsman is a genius.
This is a masterpiece, perfect for resort wear or whenever a gentle sweetness is desired.

So I decided to shop my “samples wardrobe” today — something I had taken a break from for a while. Out of curiosity (or desperation?) I sprayed a little of this on my inner arm. At first I was zipped right back to planting bulbs in the garden (and maybe accidentally stepping on one): that strong, sap-green, bulb-flower smell, not the ultra-flowery ones like hyacinth, but the more fleshy-green, indescribable ones like tulip.
However, that soon softened into something sweeter. I wonder if I have found my spring scent! It’s sweet, definitely warmer than my old spring one (Woods of Windsor Lily of the Valley, which I don’t want to wear any more because it’s so sharp and dry).
The catch: my hubby doesn’t like Calyx. True, I may have oversprayed it. We’ll see what happens in a few hours.
A little later: Apologies to Calyx fans… but it’s a bad sign when you have to wash off a perfume because you’re about to eat. It was making me slightly nauseous. I’m sad about it, it was so hopeful, LOL. It’s not bad — I definitely don’t hate it — it’s just not for me.

  52. :

I’ve not tried the Prescriptives version of Calyx, only Clinique. It’s a spring, summer, sporty, day scent. I definitely get the marigold and the green leaves. Nothing spicy or oriental to this one, straight up lemony, green to me. When I want to wear something uplifting and outdoorsy, this is what I grab. Love it!

  53. :

    3 out of 5

Well, I have to come to defend my beloved, missunderstood Calyx… This is a fragrance that does not take herself seriously at all. It’s fun, loud, happy. It opens up with a ton of fruit and citrus, dries down to sweet flowers and wood, but all the notes are loud by themselves, on their own, they don’t melt into each other, but each scream out as loud as they can. So yes, it is a bit ” hair spray” like, a bit childish, a bit like a big fruit salad. But not in a bad way! In fact this scent is unique, unassuming, naive, and it makes me feel like I’m a ten year old going to the park ride everytime I wear it. I sense from interview to Grojsman that this is a special creation for her and it was the first true fruity floral, in fact the only fruity floral Inactually like. Please don’t dismiss it, it’s a great perfume.

  54. :

I really enjoy this scent, there’s nothing that smells quite like it. Almost sort of like fresh grapefruit, but then after about 10 minutes there’s this lingering soapy scent almost like a bar of Irish spring soap. After about an hour the smell completely dissipates. It could have been so much nicer if they put more of an emphasis on the fruity scent I had towards the beginning of spraying it. Definitely wouldn’t purchase.

  55. :

I’m pretty sure my memories of the 80’s are clouding my judgment of this fragrance, but to me its very ‘preppy’. Tropical, fruity, green is what I get from it…and a rather ‘prickly’ note which may be the marigold but i’m not sure. Blast from the past for me as i’m sure I must have smelled it on many people back in the 80s.

I love green perfumes. But this smells green in the sense that a generic household air freshener smells green. It’s unbalanced, that air freshener scent plus a weird sort of sour fruit-ish smell. It’s strong, but not in a good way, a bit screechy. Obviously I am not a fan. This is a scrubber for me.

This is a very tropical, *very* juicy sweet fragrance. There’s a blast of mango, guava and freesia from the get-go and it stays ramped up at full blast through much of the drydown. It’s too much for me, like standing too close to a plugin air freshener. What was pleasant enough when you scratched and sniffed the sticker can be overbearing in person. Great in theory, best in moderation.
I wish I detected any of the base notes, something to cut the sweetness (and I say this as a fan of some very sweet scents), but I get nothing, just a tropical fruit salad.
EDIT: I’ve tried this a couple of times now and sandalwood does show up in the far, far drydown – far, far too late.

at the beginning the scent is very special and intresting. something woody ,a bit flowery ,where you can still detect the smell of soil. but after about half an hour it turned into the regular sweet ‘n sour candy style, typical to the nowadays perfumes. sorry, but at this point,i lost interest. good sillage and longevity.
