There are some good reviews over at BN too, but I hardly smell anything. Most likely, these are people who dabbed it on their wrists and then smelled it from time to time up close. Spraying once to the chest, I get a muddle initially, though it’s not unpleasant, then some sweet incense sort of base, perhaps with a touch of something leathery. If the base was stronger I think it would be a favorite, but I’ll have to use three sprays next time and see what happens. At retail prices, one has to question why it’s so weak, IMO.

I really don’t write reviews on Fragrantica, but I feel I have to counter the sole review below, as I own this and have a completely different experience with it. First off there is no rose at all in Bursch (watery or otherwise)… nor is there a “motor oil” accord or anything smelling like it. Maybe the other reviewer had a bad reaction with the scent?
To my nose, Bursch opens with a slightly boozy rhubarb accord, mixed with hints of peppercorn, saffron and citrus. At the scent’s heart, a sublime natural cedar note emerges to mingle with the remaining pepper and saffron before coupling with a supporting incense note that smells absolutely heavenly.
I absolutely love the scent from top to bottom, my only gripe is its relatively short longevity and lack of projection. This is a subtle skin scent for the most part that will almost certainly need to be reapplyed later in the day, as it usually only lasts 3-5 hours. It is perfect for year-round use when you want to smell good, but are not looking to call undue attention to your scent. The price is difficult to swallow, but the scent truly smells great. Cedar fans in particular should take note, as Bursch is one of the best examples of that note, IMO.
