Not particularly fond of the reformulation, but the original vintage fragrance (before it was called Number One since it was the Only One) is exquisite and HoF quality. There is absolutely nothing like the vintage in the fragrance marketplace today. Like others have commented, this is not a casual fragrance. I save it for more formal occasions, an upscale night on the town, or high powered board room meetings. If you can get your hands on a vintage bottle, by all means make that purchase.

Ah, the scents of the 80s….what a shame they don’t make them like this anymore!
Gorgeous fragrance, slightly soapy and somewhat fresh at the top, mellows down to a LUSCIOUS honey/tobacco/patchuli combo! Just a stunner and I am both sad and marveled at this lovely creation.
Sad because they just don’t make perfumes with depth and complexity like this anymore and marveled that they reached what could have been the pinnacle of perfumery in the 80s!
10/10 for me, love this fragrance!

I bought this and sold it early into my fragrance journey.
Maybe I had a fake from Ross, but I remember it being resinous, aromatic and made me think of the stickiness of fruit juice.
The first spray smelled great and then it smelled rather dusty and more of a pale wood.
Not a bad fragrance, but It will seem dated to most people 25 and younger.
I would recommend “Men of Blame” by Carlen as a more artistic and quality version or Ferragamo UOMO as a aromatic that is charming, yet less mature and without the resin or yellow floral aspect.

In my opinion, this is Boss’s only worthy fragrance and their lightening in a bottle.
Forget the Boss Hugos, Bottled, Scents, etc…Boss Number One is their benchmark scent that all their fragrances should be measured against. It’s a multi-layered classic fougere at par with Gentleman, Kouros and Azzaro. Beautifully constructed and an outstanding performer.

    @Atxcm
You are right. I do own both fragrances and only tested them – Boss nº1 and Givenchy Gentleman – side by side today.
There is more than 90% similarity.

I own the original BOSS before it was called “Number One” and it is the pride and joy in my collection. The latest formulation is still excellent and very powerful, but the original has more natural honey and woody notes and clearly of higher quality. I purchased a newer bottle so I can save my vintage for special occasions. It’s still the classiest cologne to wear with a suit or tuxedo, nothing comes close IMHO. Although best in winter, the cold air really brings out the magic of this juice. It still can be worn in summer months if lightly applied. BOSS is not a cologne to wear casually. Either wear it with a suit, or least a sport coat, or at the very least a nice button down ironed shirt. It’s just too classy of a fragrance to wear casually. In a business meeting this juice with immediately tell others who’s the boss. And let the down votes come but IMO this is not a fragrance for a feminine lady.

Another fragrance I have been wearing since I was a teenager. The new formulation of course is not as good as the original, but is still great in my books. Definitely a more mature fragrance.

my dad owns this since 1989 & he bought this from Germany (the bottle says made in west Germany as well) , this EDT still kills all the perfumes i own in terms of quality of juice & longevity . The NEW BOTTLES smells the same but is NOT as strong as the original versions nor the longevity matches , if you can find the vintage bottles that would be great !
edit .. i got another bottle from MADE IN GERMANY .. and is just the same juice as my dad’s bottle which i mentioned ! 8 hours+ longevity easily ! Stay away from UK bottles they don’t even work for more than 2 hours.

This is a gorgeous complex, refined fantastic, almost beasty fragrance.
Great for anything except hot weather.
I love it, my wife loves it. For me it’s an absolute masterpiece.
Upon initial spray, it comes on quite bold and classy. The notes are citrusy and fruity in the opening.
Half a minute latter you receive an avalanche of notes including sweet honey, lavender, rose, and well composed other notes that lead you to love this fragrance. You feel like you are in the presence of a orchestra with the conducteur mixing tons of lovable different notes and blending them together to form a symphony.
Its longevity is easily 14+ hours. Due to its sweetness and smoothness you may over spray just a bit – 4 to 5 sprays maximum.
You get a very lovable dry down with a very strong sweet tobacco, oak moss, sandalwood, patchouli and musk – the inevitable 5 of the 80’s.
In terms of longevity it’s almost a beast. The good news is that even if you over spray, you do not get intrusive to other people, but you also do not gain longevity; you just get a bit of more sillage. Longevity good for 12+ hours
This EDT smells expensive and and in line with what you expect from the fragrance that put Hogo Boss in the perfume’s map.
It is indeed a very nice juice and one of a kind. It does not pretend to clone anything and I like it that way with its proper individuality.

In constant love with this juice. Its fresh in the 1985 way. All about it is 1985. Love 1985. The development is gorgeous, not for the faint hearted, it has that urinal vibe going on for a bit, a bitterness that tends to put some folks off this juice. Not me. Theres a fantastic tobacco as well which lingers around clearly while the mossy dry down is just perfection.

My husband wears this fragrance a lot.
Like with so many 30 years old fragrances, this has a considerable sillage and longevity.
It lasts for a lot of hours and it can be a bit of a beasty if you spray too much.
Just two sprays on your chest, side of your neck, on your wrists, and hair near the ears, is enough for a long long projection. For 1 day sillage add 2 sprays on yor shirt.
A little goes a long way. You will definitely get nasal attention of others wearing this. Boss N1 is a mature, confident man. This has never smelled “old man” to me. Instead I keep visualizing a young man in his 20’s (a twenty year old in the 80’s) with his black leather jacket and collar turned upwards, blue jeans, a white shirt, dark suede shoes, and a strong cologne.
It is quintessentially 1980’s. It does smell of money and older men with big bank accounts but, because it’s dated, it is now considered a somewhat cheap and a nostalgic scent. Believe me that that it’s not the case. I do see other women of all ages sniffing the air due to the sillage around my husband.
In a way it can be put into the same league as Esencia de Loewe for Men without smelling alike. But I think it’s a unique cologne that just happens to be from the 80’s but can be worn discreetly today.
As far as I am concerned I do love this fragrance on men. It’s not for boys who data Britney sugar scented girls.
If you want a top top EDT that most of the under 40 years old do not know, and all the women will love…
    That’s BOSS Number 1

Honey, tobacco and apple is a lovely trio. This trio opens the scent and the effect is sweet and fruity. The florals waste no time in making their appearance, with the rose and jasmine coming in loud and clear. The oak moss is ever present during the scent giving it a nice slightly green and earthy roundness. The musk and woody spicy elements come in but faintly to give this fragrance a little more depth. The general feel of this scent as it progresses is one of simplicity and a mature sweetness and freshness. This scent is very linear, inoffensive and very mature. Hugo Boss Number One is perfect for office wearing but I could see the wearer becoming pretty bored with it, so definitely make it part of a rotation. Simply put, with Hugo Boss Number One you will not be disappointed. Spray carefully, this fragrance lasts and projects pretty well for a long time! This is an easy reach when you’re deep in your work week and can’t be bothered to appreciate the little details around you.

Boss number one is one of the masterpieces of Pierre Wargnye, probably the first one, or the second after Drakkar Noir from Gui Laroche. More recently he developed La Nuit de l`Homme for Yves Saint Laurent…. need I say more?
But for me his jewel of the crown is still Boss Number One, and this is the perfume that put Hugo Boss on the perfume map. It’s pleasing people for more than 30 years now.
I already had 7 or 8 bottles 125cc and have always a new unit in reserve as it is not easy to find it nowadays. I have been saved by the web shopping both in availability and pricing.
As for the perfume itself….. God save the King.
This is a complex fragrance with all stages very well mastered. Rest assured… Boss n1 will never smell cheap or synthetic.
I do recommend it to every man on earth. Well above average in sillage and longevity, as well an amazing fragrance. Its honey sweetness together with the tobacco scent and the woodsy notes define its heart and soul. The edges are rounded by patchouli, cinnamon, a bit of citrus, musk and amber… and without tonka (genius).
    10,00/10 in every aspect.
PS – My wife loves it and sometimes wears it as well, spraying on clothes and handbags!!!!
Sometimes I also use her Bvulgari Black 🙂

This might be the textbook example of being defeated by your own success – This smells exactly like every complimentary soap in every hotel room you have ever been in … maybe with a dollop of honey thrown in for good measure.
As such, I would describe Boss Number One as ‘everything inside of the ordinary’.
Not to say that it smells bad, this is a rather pleasant scent, but it won’t make you stand out even in a room where nobody else is wearing this. If I where to smell this on someone I would probably reply with ‘well, you certainly are wearing perfume’ with no extra qualifiers added.
By extension I’m utterly baffled by the many nighttime recommendations above, as this seems like the most generic, inoffensive, office-scent you could imagine.
I do have the aftershave, so there is a slight possibility that the EDT smells like something else than hotel soap and honey, but I don’t think this is the case based on the aroma profile above. I find it more likely, that this definitely-not-bad boy has gotten its standout reputation by association with Gordon Gecko types of years past.
However the quality is decent with a fair bit of sillage and longevity (probably more so with the EDT), and if you’re looking for a way to smell nice, but absolutely no more than that, I can recommend this – It’s even safe for a blind buy.
However, if you want to make yourself noticed in any way, you should reach for another bottle.
BTW: Apologies for the double post below – something went wrong with the login, and I don’t know how to delete guest comments.
Update: I tried putting some of the aftershave into a travel atomizer for easier application. I found out that spraying it instead of splashing it adds a bit more complexity. Specifically it makes the apple and especially the tobacco a bit more noticeable, as well as making it smell a bit like raisins. I won’t take back what I said above, as it is still rather uninteresting, just a bit less so when sprayed.

This is the definition of beast mode. You really gotta be a man’s man to wear it and pull it off. I smelled it for the first time about 6 years ago when I was 15 and could instantly tell that this was suited toward 30+ year olds. Regardless, I loved the smell and decided it was the most badass scent I would ever come across. Picked up a bottle and never hesitate to reach for it during a night out. A white t, darkwash jeans, and a leather jacket to match it. For me, 1-2 sprays lasts all day. I could not imagine this thing lasting any less than 12 hours on anyone. If it doesn’t last, your skin is probably dry as hell. Do yourself a favour… pick up that moisturizer and apply liberally.

I was initially nonplussed by this one. I’d smelled it on other guys over the years, but never felt compelled to try it myself. I always thought of it as a floral with a little something extra that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. When I recently bought a bottle, I took a first sniff and thought, “hey, I remember that.” About once a week I’d steal a whiff and always, my impression was the same. About 2 weeks ago my impression took a wild turn. I’ve fallen in lust!
The scent I now get above all others is patchouli, and a dirty, skanky one. It has a dark, sweet and slightly funky edge to it. This is the girl you can’t stay away from, but would rather die than take her home to meet your parents. Funny how this was so popular in business circles years ago. When I smell this, I want to roll in it, like a dog does with every funky scent he smells. This is pure lust, and I love it!

A very ordinary old school Soapy/Spicy fragrance with weak longevity and silage.
I bought it in my early 20’s but gave it to my father after few sprays. There is nothing unique about it. It a cologne for mature old aged people. The initial notes are very heavy and spicy which is a plus point but the base notes are very ordinary as you will get citrus mixed with honey and basil.
A NOT BUYING AGAIN UNLESS I AM 60 Fragrance for me.

Here we are dealing with a masterpiece, a great masculine and classy fragrance.
First of all, let me tell you this is really unique and I am having trouble find something that smells close to it.
It opens with a captivating herbal but sweet at the same time scent, that for an 80s fragrance it is surprising how inoffensive and pleasant it is. Has an after shave vibe, a high quality, well made after shave vibe!
It gets really soapy later with the sweetness remaining and the herbals calming down, handing their place to the woodiness and a light floral undertone.
When it dries down, the Tobacco with the Cinnamon prevails, along with the tired Honey and the scent turns very dry, I had never experience a fragrance making such a sudden turn to dryness. I would even call it dusty.
I have smell many old school powerhouses and I liked most, but like the modern fragrances, they share so many similarities most of the time, that among them it is hard to call one super unique. I repeat AMONG them. But Boss Number One really made me fall for it easily.
The only drawback is the performance. For the time it was produced, I hoped for a greater performance, but it is pretty average in the section. Look for a pre-2015 bottle if you are interested.
A tip for this one. When you get your hands on this use it for 3-4 times, let some air get in the bottle and leave it for 2-3 weeks. That happened with me and found there was an improvement in the scent as well as at its performance.

Here’s another one that has suffered from
reform. In the 80’s it competed well with all the powerhouses out there at the time. It reminded me of the 70’s big ones with an 80’s smoothness.
Recent tasting has revealed a cheapening
reform probably starting around 1993, when they started labeling it Number One.
Thumbs up for the Vintage. Neutral for the current because it still beats the Aquatic muck.

The first time I smelled Boss No. 1 I was so young. I remember a cousin wore this fragrance, and I loved that smell, but I did not have money to buy a fragrance of designer. Recently I buyed a bottle of this fragrance and I still like it. Is sweet at its first minutes, it smells to a honey with some citrics, although the honey is constantly in all of development of the fragrance, too I can smell a tobacco. In his medium phase it turns so floral, mainly rose and lavender, but is more complex than I describe. The base is delicious woody with sandal, sweet patchouli, tobacco, cinamon and so mossy.
This fragrance smells as an elegant soap, its very romantic and sophisticated, for wearing formal or casual. Is the fragrance that I most like of Hugo Boss. Its sillage is regular but the longevity is very good, at least on me is more of 10 hours.
In its floral phase remember me a little to Aramis combined with Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, but this it has its own personality.
I think Boss No. 1 could be used every time of the year, but preferably in autumm or winter.

The younger revieweres associate this with aftershave products and find it a little bit conservative maybe because Boss #1 used to be worn by older people. But a perfume shouldn’t be appreciated at this way.B#1 destined to be a classic ,that’s why is still in product in today’s market.
It is also strong, rough and aggressive in the same way with other classics of this genre like Kouros from Ysl. Many have mentioned that somehow reminds gentleman from Givenchy but Boss #1 is smoother and sweeter.
This one is a true Gem from the 80’s as many other fragrances of this decade used to be.

As with anything, I understand that this is not what it originally was when it first came out in 1987.
I am a woman who, in 1988 when I was 17, bought a bottle of the original Hugo Boss (back then, that’s all it was, now I see there’s like a hundred of Hugo Bosses). I loved it on me. I felt like a rebel, wearing a guy’s scent, but it worked on my skin.
The reason why I am writing this review is because after wearing Madonna’s Truth or Dare Naked, I had to share it on here that T or D Naked smells just like the original Hugo Boss did on me. Woody, rich, with just a touch of powder under it (don’t fret, boys, it’s probably my chemistry making it slightly powdery as most perfumes end up powdery on me).
I would be curious if any guys out there who has the original Boss to try the T or D Naked and see if it smells anything like it.
I am seriously going down memory lane right now, complete with my the Kelly McGillis hair (think Top Gun), roll-up hem jeans and making out with my first boyfriend. Damn, good times…

    Revised
Be careful which #1 your rating!!! The original version, the label underneath reads Eurocos Frankfurt, M made in U.K Giorgio Beverly Hills. The colour of this juice is a deep golden yellow. The new version is made in Geneva and the colour is a much lighter yellow. It’s a shame they take one of the most iconic brand name in the 80’s and alters the aroma. The orginal is far more rich and warm. The new version is more harsh the longevity is nothing like the orginal.
l couldn’t agree more with all of those who say that bar non Number One is a real aromatic Fougere which truly represents a tailored man who’s well dressed wearing this juice in the 80’s This frag has a real sweet(honey) woodsy-tobacco aroma making it ABSOLUTELY STUPENDOUS! A timeless classic which rocks, none of the other Boss frag’s comes a smig close to Number One.
When I first sprayed it on my wrist, I smell honey and tobacco with a hint of rose. After this juice settles down the aroma of sandalwood and amber gives it a real warm powdery vib.
Finally this juice coming together beautifully with a really masculine vib. Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting well past 8hrs.
    Overall opinion,
Even the bottle which is square with that pinstripes pattern on the front giving it a real masculinity identity. In today’s market if I poured this juice into a Tom Ford bottle, a real nieche of a fragrance paying 3x the price. Perfect during the evening and during the cool weather with the aroma carrying off your skin. 9.5/10 ♥it.

Whoa! I knew I was taking a chance on a blind buy with this for my husband. He is normally a fresh, oceanic, lemon limey sort of fragrance lover. This is anything but. It does have the elements HE likes but also the elements I like. Together, this is a fantastic cologne. I normally would not age a cologne but I have a hard time seeing a man under 30 liking or pulling off Boss Number One. It is heavy. But the initial blast warms down into a fragrance I think a real WOMAN would appreciate. This is nothing like the current Boss lines. They do smell good though and more age appropriate for the under 30 crowd. If you are ready to be taken seriously by your woman or in the boardroom. Buy this! it is a great price at places like Fragrance-net….a winner in my book.

I love it! although I’m under 30 years old, and it IS a classic scent.
It came to my dad as a gift but when I smelled it I had to buy a precious bottle for myself.. too bad! I’ve run out of it! maybe I’ll think of buying another bottle soon.
opens up with good mixture of heavy honey and inky oak-moss and a feel of eucalyptus.. are u sure there’s no eucalyptus in here? then comes tobacco and rose with faint sandalwood.. YUM.
    Scent 9/10
Longevity 9/10 (heavy is this one believe me)
    Projection 9/10

I tried this some time ago. I didn’t care much for it. I think I know why. It has the “apple” and “cedar” notes in it. Even though I like both plants, those notes don’t react very well with my chemistry with the wrong combo of other notes. I can smell some woods, maybe some amber in it, and maybe citrus. I’m not sure about spice notes as I don’t smell any in it. There are other fragrances by this same designer that have tried a few of such as “Hugo Boss” which I like better than this one. This perhaps, is this design house’s oldest fragrance so that’s why it may be “dated” or smell “old” to some people.? I think it did for me at least a little bit.

Totally agree with minipoly, this scent has absolutely been reformulated and there is no comparison betweent the original and the stuff today called number one. If it says number one on the box,it’s the newer version which is not nearly as refined a scent as the original. The difference is the oakmoss and the massive silage and longevity of the original and the Classic barbershop scent.

At first sniff this one does remind one of Aramis, whether the similarity is intended or not. After that, strong undertones emerge, among them honey and something unpleasant which smells like human dirt. In the long run, the undertones disappear and it becomes similar to Aramis again, maybe a bit sweeter.
In other words: This is one of the surviving fragrances of the classic era of male scents. It’s hard to imagine anyone younger than 40 wearing this. That said, this one is – without doubt – elegant, masculine and classy.

Just purchased this again for the first time since the early 90’s. The good news is that it smells exactly the same as it did then. Longevity and silage are about the seem. A classic and unique scent. I haven’t come across anything quite like it. I don’t think its similar to Aramis, (probably my all time favorite). If you like one (Aramis or Boss) you will probably like the other. They are both the same caliber. Neither is a substitute for the other. Anyway, I have fond memories of Boss, and its refreshing to enjoy them again. The scent is available on internet sites, and the current formulation is good enough that you don’t need to seek out vintage samples unless you really want to.
The scent is great all around and could easily be a signature scent as well.
There are no age restrictions on this scent (or most others for that matter). This is suitable for men of all ages (and a few women according to some of the reviews). Enjoy.

Lovely. My dad used it years ago. Stole the aftershave maybe 20years ago, still loved it although he put some herbal stuff (particles) in it. Thinking back I think the particles were agar wood.(oud). I say so because of the way it changed the smell or should I say complimented the scent. Anyway then I thought it was voodoo. Lol.
Now it’s my signature scent. I’ always have a bottle somewhere. Also got a bottle for my dad.
He actually asked me to get a scent I used but he couldn’t remember the name. I assumed it was the boss número uno but when I got it for him he said that’s wasn’t what he was looking for. Now I think it’s bleu de France which I also pinched from him last century but that’s impossible to find.
As per the juice itself, the silage and longevity are above normal. I get some honey in there. It’s what humans are supposed to smell like.

hmmm, let’s see here – made in 1985, oakmoss listed prominently in it’s pyramid. They would be in violation of IFRA selling this stuff if it hasn’t been reformulated, surely to be on their wall of shame. If you don’t know the difference between this and the original, you’ve probably only been using a reformulation. Like most scents prior to 2000, they smell similar, but the thrill is gone🙁
Look for the cologne that doesn’t say ‘Number One’ on the packaging.

The ultimate “suit” scent – business, weddings, formals, cocktails. Anytime a suit is appropriate, Boss fits right underneath. I’ve had several bottles over the years and No. 1 never disappoints. Not ideal for casual wear on me, but may be okay for others. Old and new bottles have been virtually identical, so don’t let the “reformulation” specter scare you away from this classic.

The scent was very leather and you can really sense honey and tobacco here. It’s citrusy on the top notes and the lemon notes was noticeable. The honey note and rose note was noticeable on the hearts(it’s quite nice). The scent becomes really masculine and gentle. It’s like a businessman’s perfume. This is a classic and should be continued. It was like the heritage or father of classic manly perfumes. This is likely for the mature and a night date with your special someone. Bos
