Whatever you do, don’t tell Dame that his Black Mexican Vanilla has been xeroxed…kinda. But forget that…I know what you wanna know. How does it smell? The answer is “decent.” There’s no such thing as saying “Mancera Black Vanilla smells bad.” With that being said, this isn’t totally innocuous. Jasmine has a tendency to hijack an atmosphere. One could make the case that the creation is lacking a certain something or perhaps too dense on the white side of things. For those that care, the fruity notes lives at the top of the fragrance. Once it’s gone, it’s gone!! It’s all white from there. This could’ve easily been named Black Florals. The more I smell this, the more this is starting to remind me of Vacances Liquide. The coconut/floral combo will get you in trouble with someone’s spouse. If I could have surgery to smell like this for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t complain.

I love the scent, but don’t expect anyone else to be able to smell it. Luckyscent advertises it as “not overwhelming”, which in my experience is code for “can’t smell it.” You CAN smell it, but for about 15 minutes if you have your nose pressed to your wrist. Another beautiful perfume with a high price tag that would be worth it if they put as much oil in the scent as the price tag demands. Cheaping out on ingredients doesn’t make financial sense if it stops the product from selling. It’s beautiful though– vanilla, light flowers, light fruit, all incredibly well blended. Def in the wrong category though. This isn’t a “floral” just because it has a flower in it anymore than Hypnotic Poison is.
Update: splurged on the bottle, which is always different from the sample. Peachier, a ton of fruit initially, I don’t get the floral blast others are mentioning, maybe I’m missing it. It lasts longer out of the bottle and settles into an extremely well-blended vanilla quickly, the kind that you just can’t replicate in the drug store, the mall, or the department store.

Mancera Black Vanilla is a powdery, floral expression of vanilla, with hints of fruit sprinkled amidst the powder and flowers.
Mainly I get vanilla, peach, violet, and jasmine. Really quite a floral mix with just a touch of what I generally regard as a feminine-smelling fruit in peach.
Surely a lot of men are going to like this, as vanilla always has a unisex appeal, but the florals put it out of the range of powdery that I can tolerate, even with vanilla. Something like Guerlain Cuir Beluga accomplishes this brilliant and while I love that, Mancera Black Vanilla does not quite hit the mark.
Still, it’s a superb performer and many will no doubt like this fragrance a lot as a new type of vanilla in the line I’ve not smelled before, but surely Mancera and Montale have an abundance of vanilla offerings already.
