Black Jade is a stunning perfume–opulent without being bombastic, simplistic without being boring. There is a flash of bright green effervescence when you first spray the juice but it quickly evolves on the skin, releasing cardamom and cinnamon in discreet amount, before the bloom of flowers takes the stage. To me, rose is the stand-out note here, but jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are all present as well, straight through the dry-down.
I think the appeal of Black Jade is in the seeming simplicity and the restraint with which the materials are used–it is not a sillage monster, does not insist upon itself as many other ‘hedonist’ type scents would in a modern market. Patchouli, tonka and amber last far longer than any other materials here, kissed by the faintest hint of incense; the choice to avoid garish extenders in a play for tenacity makes the dry-down feel like silk being pulled across naked skin: smooth, luxurious, narcotic.
In its final march towards evaporation, Black Jade still exudes rosy notes, though where they were stronger before as part of the floral bouquet in the heart, now they take on more subtle and possibly erotic nuances of bare skin when paired with the creaminess of sandalwood and the richness of vanilla/amber.
I think, for the price, this fragrance is excellent–those concerned with the tenacity, who want their fragrance to last all day and smack others around them in the face, this fragrance is not for you. Those who seem overly concerned with copy or advertising of this particular scent, I don’t find it implausible that the formula for a perfume meant for notably extravagant royalty was somehow preserved–in fact we have many recipes for fragrance formulae and raw materials extractions that predate Antoinette by almost a century, and those generally were not royal in their commission.
Black Jade carries itself like a queen, imparting some regal bearing to the wearer. It has moderate tenacity and sillage and is a very personal scent because of that. One imagines only the queen’s retinue would have been able to smell the fragrance, had it been this modern formulation, though another fable claims she was caught because of her signature perfume and taken to the Bastille. Whatever the legends are, and whether or not they are true, Black Jade has joined their legacy as another chapter in the storied histories of France and perfumery.

Nice. Just nice. Not attractive nor unattractive. plutonic captured in scent. It is well made. Great day time or night. Respected scent not swooned

The opening is dominated by cinnamon and fresh notes for a sharp and sparkling start. The flowers are joining and adding some depth; rose and fresh jasmine blend well with the newly added cardamom. Later it gets even more delicious with sweet notes of tonka and vanilla. It gets a bit powdery, but still very enjoyable. The middle part with cinnamon, rose and sandalwood reminds me of the drydown of Egoiste.

What a beautiful perfume. The initial blast is a sweet rose with a touch of greenery. The Amber, Tonka and a hint of citrus is present. Black Jade reminds me a little of Sisley Izia but not as sweet. For me the silage was about three hours finishing as a beautiful soft rose incense.

This is the Goldilocks of the modern rose chypre genre. Superior in every way. Luxe in it’s smooth delivery. Excellent.

I put this on my arm and five minutes later walked out with a full bottle. This was love at first sight.
However, there is nothing particularly novel about this stuff. The most exciting thing about it is the completely dubious marketing copy. And seriously, you don’t need to gild this lily.
Black Jade is like a very well tailored black suit. It may not look like very much on the hanger, but put it on and you’re Audrey Hepburn. There’s something incredibly tailored and chic about this stuff.
(Etat libres *Eau de Protection* is 95% the same perfume.
If you gave the same ingredients in little parcels, one to Chanel and one to Montale, you’d get these results. Black Jade smells like Chanel finally got their balls back. Eau de Protection smells like Montale produced a European perfume for the Arab market.)
I digress. But Black Jade is in my top ten favourite perfumes. I recently moved overseas and it was the first to make the very truncated suitcase selection.
Buy this. It’s not made with rare moutaintop orchids or the scent of hummingbird farts. It’s not made artisinally by virgins under waning moonlight. It’s certainly not connected to Marie Antoinette. It is, however, as satisfying as your Nonna’s spaghetti.
The real reason to buy this is the craftsmanship.

You’re drinking a cup of milk tea in a rose garden, tea that you’ve ordered iced, lightly sweetened with sugar and vanilla, and heavily sprinkled with cinnamon and cayenne pepper. For a moment, your heart sways between the sweet and the spicy, the lull and the invigoration, the ice and the sun, and then it’s gone. You’re left with the paper cup, the hodgepodge of debris at the bottom, and the distant roses that you’d briefly forgotten. Black Jade by Lubin.

This isn’t really a review, but a statement: Black Jade may very well be the most beautiful, box-ticking, satisfying fragrance I’ve ever smelled. There’s not one facet-from opening notes to drydown-that disappoints. This scent is as close to perfect (for me, anyway) as I’ll probably ever find. I ordered a sample on a whim, based on Fragranticans’ reviews; I’m hoarding what’s left for “aromatherapy” purposes. I think I *need* a bottle of this. Hell must be freezing over…
ETA: I’ve got a larger spray sample on order now, for further testing. This may end up being FBW. OMG…

I need to find a sample of this one and give it a go.a perfume with dominant cardamom and incense seems to be very risky for me but on me it’s a gorgeous rose-patchouli combo with just right amount of spices, smoke and sweet notes
It’s not a very dark, too heavy in spice and smoke rose scent,it’s not light and bright either.it has a great balance of being mysterious, sensual, soft and feminine.it was my first test and I liked it(I like it’s drydown more than the opening park)but I need to love a more than 100$ perfume in order to consider buying it and I’m not sure about being in love yet

I LOVE THIS! The snarky comments about the history make me a little sad. I’m obsessed with all things Marie Antoinette and of course it is a given that no scent we make today can truly 100 percent recreate what she smelled like – that’s impossible since every facet of our society, from the quality of our water to the scent of our soaps to the dietary differences, all compose a world of smells she would have never encountered, not to mention the methods of perfumery and scents we have access to now. But we do know that she loved florals, all kinds, and had SEVERAL scents that she commissioned from her perfumer Fargeon. I have no trouble imagining a scent like this on her, just as I have no trouble imagining my more bombastic tuberose scents on her as well (since she loved tuberose). What’s more important is not its exact history (though I don’t doubt Lubin is speaking the truth when they say some original formulas inspired at least some aspects of this scent) – more important is if it as a scent approximates Marie Antoinette, and I feel it does. Imagine if you mixed a bit of Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady, a bit of Chanel Coco, and a bit of Miss Dior Le Parfum, and you’d have this scent. Beautiful warm rose spicy chypre. Elegant but not stuffy at all, and the scent doesn’t take itself too seriously if you know what I mean. It breathes and adapts to your chemistry very well. Not to mention, the bottle is GORGEOUS, the cap is lovely, and the box is white moire/satin and to die for. I love Lubin and am very happy with this purchase. Vive la Reine.

I have had this beauty for two years or so now. It opens with a sharp green bergamot and then strong, sweet cardamom and cinnamon. I love the cardamom note. The opening is fantastic! Unfortunately (because I love my spices hot and burning), this is not a strong, spicy floral. This is muted, soft and skinscent floral after a couple of hours. I do not get much incense and only a tad of patchouli. Muted shades of Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir. Four hours in and there seems to be no trace on skin, the barest smidge on clothing. If you like your spicy florals muted/tame and very ladylike then this fits the bill. If you want this to shine and project, best worn in warmer weather.

I absolutely love Black Jade. To me, it’s a predominantly warm, spicy, incense-y scent with the slight sweetness of florals and amber. It’s a very well-blended scent so that all the notes flow smoothly together. What I love about this is that this scent manages to be elegant and special, while also being wearable for everyday. The warm spiciness blend into your skin; it doesn’t smell too loud or like it’s wearing you. Not to mention, the bottle and the packaging (a white satin box) is gorgeous. One of my favorite perfumes. (I know there’s an elaborate story behind the scent which may or may not be true, but in my opinion disregard that and just appreciate the scent for what it is.)

I really wanted to like Black Jade, but other than a prettiness and an appealing piquancy in opening notes, I can’t find much to get excited about.
I can see why people could find it sexy – it reminds me of fresh sweat and it has a sort of fresh fizz to it. It might grow on me..
Descriptions of it made me really want to try it, then I also read some intriguing online controversy about the marketing story behind the perfume – about Marie Antoinette etc, but then when I tried it I was a bit – ‘meh’.
The opening is promising – green, tingly and intriguing, but the further it settled into dry down the more I felt it just smells like the dry down of an indifferent perfume.
In fact what it reminded me of was the general scent of a box of samples I have. I have a few boxes of samples – one for favourites and two others for less favourites – this is like the general scent of the least favourite box.
I get a lot of tonka, which I like – nicely rounded, comforting etc, it plays nicely with cardamom and the slight tingle of cinnamon, but other than that it just doesn’t have the intrigue I was expecting.
Edit: a male friend absolutely loved it! In comparison to my other favourites this one stood out for him and, he said, made him feel ‘excited’ !

Black Jade is a very very special perfume. It has it’s own unique personality. I think it’s a masterpiece too. It’s alluring and terribly feminine. I have to agree totally with the perfect review by hadassa. I can’t say anything better than that.
    I love it.

It’s amazing how differently we percept perfumes! I see absolutely no similarity between Keiko Mecheri’s OLIBAN and BLACK JADE! Apart from the note of rose in both, and the fact that both these perfumes are wonderful.
OLIBAN is very dark, smoky and masculine, and animalic.
BLACK JADE is sparkling, fresh, spicy, very feminine.
In fact’s there’s no perfume like BLACK JADE, it’s phenomenal.
I’m taking my words regarding its “JHaG” vibe back, I really love Lady Vengeance, it’s great, but Black Jade is something absolutely different. Whereas LV is a modern, teenage, gothic, assertive, thick mentholated rose-patch, BJ is a refined potion made of champagne, perfect makeup, emerald coloured silk, lace, gold, and high heels… it’s glamourous and refined, modern but unmistakably classic.
Oh, it makes me feel intoxicated right now. This perfume is SO GOOD I just have to find special occasions all the time to use it more often. It isn’t pompous at all, it’s light and polite, but too good, just to good for almost everything apart from a date with the love of your life.
This is what I call a masterpiece: a perfume that makes your heart beat faster.

My big regret with this House are sillage and longevity of the perfumes.
If they could improve this faces of their products, they would make a big difference in perfumery world, I think; fragrances are wonderful.

The charming story behind this perfume is BS:
    1) We actually have an approximate idea of what Marie Antoinette would have smelled like. MA was known for taking a bath a couple of times a week, and had herbs, roses, and almonds in her bath. We also know that she was fond of greenish, herbally scents- think more Hungary Water and Eau de Cologne. This would have been very distinctive in the French court, where very heavy spiced perfumes and sachets were used to outwit body odor.
In addition, for as grandly wealthy as MA was, some of the notes would have NOT been available before 1800, when trade with India was expanded and normalized.
    2) Having said that, this is a LOVELY scent, grounded in spices, with a rich expansive floral openness. There is a sparkle of freshness that dries down to a lovely, warming spiciness. I tried this twice now- once in the rainy, misty winter and on a hot summer afternoon in Portland, Oregon. In winter, this is refreshing and warming, and seems to have low to moderate sillage; in summer this had a initial, pleasing moderate sillage that rose and bloomed with the ambient heat. Quality of materials is excellent and two spritzes will do you for a about 4-5 hours.
    3) This is on my list to buy a full bottle.

Hi, I am the unfortunate perfume lover that lost her sense of smell but not my love of perfume. So thankyou to everyone on this site and similar others for your reviews because I still splurge and shop away for fragrances based solely on reviews. This sounds like it may be similar to Mad Madame by Juliette Has a Gun. I already have Madame, would I be purchasing a similar scent? It sounds so sexy and refined. I gather Madame may have the background of tart in her younger years. Nothing like experience to shape a strong personality with no time for bs. Thats my Madame ( blue collar beginnings). Black Jade may have been raised with a silver spoon. Thanks for any tips.

This fragrance went directly to beauty on my skin. The hit of bergamot only lasted 5-10 minutes, then it was cardamom, amber, and musk with an almost berry-like jamminess. What is most amazing is that even after three hours, it did not descend into *pure* amber and musk – the cloying golden syrup that some amber fragrances veer into after an hour or two – in Black Jade, the initial lightness remains.
Sillage is moderate on me, but it lasted a full 8 hours. It’s a graceful fragrance – one I imagine a lover would be entranced by when they came close for a kiss.

Ageless, classic but something incredibly elegant about this old favorite of the French Empress. The notes in themselves are not unusual, cardamom and bergamot are widely used and distinctive notes but what is unique is the craftsmanship in the balance of them and all the other elements. This is what you go to the small french perfume houses for. This is a refuge and salvation for those who have done everything else and are looking for something that no one else in the street wears. It not for the average fragranista still greedily sucking down todays celebrity lolly fragrances or the dime a dozen floral. This is for those who have grown and expanded past that to true perfume appreciation.

Close your eyes.. breathe deeply.. inhale and suddenly there i was.. it’s Budapest, Sept 2012. It’s drizzling slightly. Not forecast but I never take much notice of the forecast. A takeaway coffee in the rain has its charms.. the steam from the polystyrene cup was rising to mingle with the mist. I put on my headphones, listened to the sweet sound of Chris de burgh singing DON’T PAY THE FERRYMAN. Suddenly, everything that is, was and will be just made sense. And that my friends is black jade.

Black Jade has blown me away. What a gorgeous creation that opens and reminds me for a minute of the original Emeraude! It moves beyond Emeraude into something else – gorgeous spices and florals. All those delicious resins and the cardamon/incense kick is like non other. This perfume has a deep richness and lingers for hours. I’m wearing this on a very hot evening and loving every minute of it. Normally I’d choose something lighter to wear but this scent has captured my attention in a big way.

This perfume is so commonly uncommon. It is one of those scents that wins you through the quality of the composition, not through being ground-breaking. It’s not something completely new in the world of perfumery, it is not unoriginal too. I personally do not detect that much resemblance to other rose scents I have tried before,
I find Black Jade extremely beautiful. It is a scent I would describe as ‘traditional’ in its blending. It starts with a fresh, garden rose, cardamon and citrus accords of bergamot. It dries down into a soft, floral-incense cloud. When I inhale from my wrist, I get a hint of a beautiful jasmine note and the vanilla base. The whole, I would describe as delicate (although quite long-lasting) and charming. For me, this was love at first sight.

When a perfume lover falls in love with perfumery in general, there are usually “three phases” of love: initially, it is an introduction to niche perfumery while travelling abroad or starting to explore “all things luxurious”, then it is the wish to test all the mass-market grands, while finally, the tired perfume lover once again turns to small perfume houses with an exceptional pedigree. Black Jade is exactly this sort of relief to a tired nose who only five minutes ago thought there could be nothing else to satisfy its senses. There is this particular luxurious feel to it–so typical to niche and other small French perfume houses that give you a particular sense of fascination, excitement and pure joy, which usually haunts the atmosphere before special occasions like weddings, balls and other events that evoke the feeling of ivory silk taffetta gowns. When tested, one can immediately feel the remarkable quality of finest ingredients, a mouth-watering bouquet of lush roses and jasmine wrapped up in a veil of smokey spices. Patchouli and bergamot adds a very modern vibe with a bit of a diva-like twist to the perfume. Black Jade remains very elegant, sophisticated and sensual, yet never over the top.

    voto 8/9
I started an olfactory journey with my perfumer of confidence, here in Genoa, he speaks of the perfume through the story, of how man, the beginning of time can not do without the smell, and thanks to this meeting, I known Black Jade.
In an anecdote: while the royal family fled from Paris, dressed like a normal little family, to take refuge in the Netherlands Austrians near Varenne-en-Argonne was Fermat, for a routine check by the city guard that, observing all ‘inside the cab, he noticed the little family, but the first thing I heard was the intense perfume of the woman, alarmed the guard who looked like an ordinary woman could not wear such a fragrance, you think, a scent can also be killed !!
For that alone, it is a scent that wearing it, you will wear the story, with a Powdery notes certainly not modern (and not an insult, rather) complex the right, I could tell you about the note Jasmine, Bergamot, of Spezia, no no …. are those scents that must be worn and lived, here I did feel, when my wife wears it, vibrates in the emotions and history the right mix for this scent, could, in the instant of first test, to disappoint you, and you say no, it’s not my thing, wait, live it, then judge.

    Classy – modern!
Black Jade is a fabulous creation. Dark, feminine, seductive but very tasteful, polite and never over the top. It is one of those rare fragrances, that I like just the way it is without wishing to change a note or two. Very harmonious, perfect ratio of floral, incense and spices. Patchouli makes it warm and cozy.
    Love it.

at first this starts out all spicy, peppery roses, then after a few minutes, the incense, tonka and amber come forth, making this scent even more gorgeous and intoxicating. it’s like flowers and incense mingling in the air on a warm day. i think that maaaybe some men would smell great in this as well. i am so pleasantly surprised by this scent.

“Black Jade” is a fresh seductive blend of jasmine and green rose that unfurls within a haze of sweet woody cinnamon, cool cardamom and smoky incense, softened at the edges by a velvety vanilla and tonka bean.
It manages to be a double-act that is both soft and demure, yet at the same time, totally sexy and vivacious, like the pretty mild-mannered girl at a party who surprises you with a racy innuendo and a slap on the bum as you leave the dance floor.
The texture is so inviting. It sort of wraps you in an embrace of warm, sparkly elegance that makes one think of a 1930’s ballroom filled with lustrous flapper girls in feather-fringed dresses, drinking champagne.
It’s youthful and chic enough to be worn by a younger woman, yet it has a sophistication that makes it wearable for more mature ladies also. In fact I find it has a lot in common with Yves Saint Laurent “Cinéma” in regards to its tone and sweetness. Plus the bottle just exudes luxury. Well worth the price in my opinion.
I can’t think of any man who would not be enticed by a woman wearing this.

Black Jade is very well crafted and beautiful. It is not very original: spicy-woody rose is such a popular genre, and there have been numerous takes on it, some brilliant, some less interesting, and to me Black Jade certainly is in the top three.
Black Jade reminds me a bit of Juliette Has a Gun line. Sharp musky unapologetic roses and minty patchouli… BJ is not as bold, it is more refined. However, it is no “good girl” perfume either.
Overall it’s very bright and a bit tart, but only a tiny bit.
The rose is enhanced by the spices (loads of cardamom and cinnamon). You definitely have to be into spicy perfumes in order to love Black Jade. It’s very savory. Blooming flowers powdered by spicy sweetness, with a hint of something very fresh and sparkling, like champagne and… mint? There’s a hint of something green, it makes the whole composition work as a hologram.
All the main notes are well detectable, and the combination of them works wonderfully on the skin. BJ smells like an attractive, well dressed, confident woman. I totally see it on a femme fatale type of person: red lipstick, high heels, mellow voice, light step, and Black Jade.
This is a very modern smelling perfume, so if you are looking for a retro vibe, it’s definitely not here.
What is here: French chic with a naughty touch.

I first smelled Black Jade on a testing card and immediately thought “a man can’t wear this!”, put the card in my pocket and moved on. Toward the end of the day I pulled the card back out to smell it again and I had to reconsider, by the time I should have been going home I was walking back into the store to buy a bottle.
I strongly relate scents and fragrances to memories, events and points-in-time. This fragrance reminds me of a lunch I had to attend at an elderly Lady’s house, it was a typical sweltering hot summer afternoon and me being bored went to recline in the sun room. The windows had been left open and there was the most amazing, intoxicating, scent drifting in on the hot breeze from the garden outside. Black Jade puts me in mind of this memory, I breathed in the heavy floral scent and sat in a recliner and slept.
I have to agree with Jordan88888888, this perfume is great on me!

Black Jade reminds me of those sensuous, earthy, mystical and dark fragrances of the 80’s – Balenciaga’s Rumba comes to mind.
It’s an acquired smell – This is a kind of scent that grows on you, as it’s scent develops over time.
Definitely different – the sort of fragrance a woman in her late 30’s would wear.

I can say that I agree with a few other reviewers that Black Jade is a nice scent, but for my taste I like a little more.. Something. Rose, vanilla, berry, here we have most of Yves Rocher Rose Absolue, then add cool bergamot & some vetiver- there we have something akin to Dior’s Midnight Poison. How interesting, this perfume really does smell like several others I’ve tried.
Now-let this not mean it isn’t pleasant, its well balanced, well mannered, inviting, and for MP lovers, or lovers of YR Rose Absolue, this would be naturally a great choice. Even for most lovers of rose in general. Black Jade isn’t offensive, and almost reminds me of an Armani creation in its polished manner. However, for myself, I love a little more punch, so this well mannered beauty will stay by the wayside. Nice perfume, but rather generic IMHO as well.

From all the rave reviews I had high hopes for Black Jade.
Never in my life have I smelled a perfume that smells so much like every other perfume. It is almost kind of amazing in its genericness. It defies description not because it is so unique or astounding, but because nothing about it stands out at all.
I don’t dislike it, I don’t like it…I am just kind of in awe of it–Black Jade is like those faces in the Michael Jackson “Black or White” video that just morph into other faces, but have no real identity.
Black Jade is the doppelganger of almost everything on the market. It’s the “one size fits all” of perfumery.

It didn’t take long for me to fall head over heels in love with Black Jade. This fragrance to my nose is a complex rose chypre, with an array of delicious spices, amber, incense and patchouli.
If you enjoy fragrances like Dior’s Midnight Poison, YSL’s Opium for Men, Amouage Jubilation for Women and Bond No.9’s West Side, you’ll more than likely adore Lubin’s Black Jade. It’s quite a rich, heady scent, one that boasts a lot of sexual prowess.
I most enjoy wearing Black Jade on a cold Autumn day. The cooler weather really brings out this fragrance’s complexity. Every time I sniff my wrist, I discover another dominant note, another fascinating accord.
The rose note in Black Jade is rather dry and tart-like, a little like potpourri. Cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla adds a touch of gourmand sweetness, before the patchouli and incense finishes it off with a masculine, earthy vibe.
It’s a fragrance that would appeal to both men and women alike. I have been known to recommend this fragrance to men. Black Jade is also confident and bold, not a scent for the shy. The sillage can pack quite a punch.
As much as I would like to believe that this is what Marie Antoinette wore back in the 1700’s, I’m not so convinced. I picture her in a powdery floral, not a heavy-hitting, spicy rose chypre. Speculation aside, Black Jade is a fragrance well-worth discovering.

I deleted my last review, because now I know the reason why I was feeling so much oud. It was coming from my nose, because I smelled before dueto perfumes and probably stayed in my nose, ha ha.
So.. back to Black Jade, I used it again today, rainy, moderate cold day. It gave me this feeling like CHERRY COKE, bubbling, sparkling, cherry coke. The fragrance later turned to sandalwood and patchouli, but I could detect cinnamon as well.
For me, it could only work on cold and rainy days, I can’t imagine to wear it in sunshine, but it’s quite unique scent.
    lasting power – 4-5 hours.
Not sure if it’s worth its price.

If I didn’t know the notes, I’d say the floral component has been made with magnolia and lily-of-the-valley. It’s just so fresh, delicate and a bit green under all those layers of spice and wood. It is such a beautifully blended creation. But way too elegant for me…must remain its sad, devout admirer.

this perfume is beautiful.. when i first opened it i was surprised to believe that it smelled very similar to Coco Chanel but this is more brighter and livelier..a more youthful version…first you smell a fresh citrus lemon scent mixed with cardamom..its the cardamom and the bergamont that gives it that fresh zingg to it..you can smell the velvity rose slightly on top and the amber and cinnamon brings this sweet spiciness to it that is simply amazing as it eventually takes over…this is a wonderful blend of natural notes that exilirates the scenses…what a remarkable perfume..i feel so special to have it.

This has got to be the most incredible French perfume I’ve ever smelled. It might actually rival my precious CHANEL No. 5 in my eyes. It’s exactly the kind of perfume I love–SweetnSpicy! I smell a ton of bright, acidic bergamot supported by fragrant green cardamom pods. Then comes a bouquet of magenta roses flanked by a heady dose of spring-fresh jasmine. I smell just a touch of cinnamon about an hour after I spray (it develops over time)…sooo beautiful!
I know people can wear whatever they want, but this perfume is SWEET, so I would only recommend it for men if they are the adventurous type.
O, Black Jade, thou Goddess of French perfumery, I kneel before thee!

hmm..not my favorite, not the style of perfume that I normally gravitate to, though I thought I might branch out and take home a sample to experiment with. It has this high note of sweetness, maybe it is the amber jasmine combo, for me, not uplifting, just a bit annoying. It does not warm up or transform for me, it is just sweet and spicy. I think I will pass it on to someone else to wear.

Allegedly this was made note by note based on a bottle of perfume Marie Antoinette had owned/possibly worn. not sure about that but… This is just a well blended quality spicy incense-y floral. There’s nothing unique here, I’ve smelled these same note groupings in several other p
