I am not a fan of vetiver and I do not have much experience with Hermes but I was curious to try it after comparisons to Dia Man. Dia was a favourite but I had to let it go because I haven’t worn it in years and somewhat regretted parting with it.
This came as a surprise blind buy when I first sprayed it on and was instantly reminded of Dia, the difference being the addition of vetiver (or maybe more pronounced here), Incense is replaced with Styrax and the smokiness adds depth and makes it a bit bolder. I do feel here a peppery soapy vibe which could be the mix of stryax, carnation and vetiver and ofcourse other ingredients. The elemi provides that sweet undertone which I am enjoying.
I am a die hard fan of the house of Amouage but I can’t fault the quality in this Hermes offering and saying it was bad would be a blatant biased lie. All in all it does give me the impression of Dia but the peppery soapiness is a bit too prominent. The fragrances changes and evolves like a complex fragrance would behave and this is something I would not have expected coming from a designer house.
I have never smelled Bel Ami but it is known as one of the greatest leather scents and if this vetiver version is in the same veins, where is the leather? I am also a little baffled where the associations to Tuscan Leather have come from…?
I got the impression that this is going to be weak but it has good persistence, enough for me to not complain and it lingers which is what I enjoy most enjoy. The composition is impressive actually. Obviously it’s JC, how can it not be?
I am glad I have come across this. Totally not what I am used to wearing yet I am really liking this and think I could really wear this. Now I am also intrigued to try more from Hermes.

Tested on a paper strip. On my shopping list since then.
A very classy leather-vetiver scent, where vetiver is not a 2nd role.
Expensive but worth the price (unlike a lot of similarly priced designer fragrances).
    Edit: tested on skin. WHAT-a-MASTERPIECE!!!
Amazing leather-vetiver. Amazing. Go to test it in a store if you haven’t already. My next buy.
The carnation and patchouli in the background makes this one more fore mature crowds. 30+

@ralopa. Interesting take. I’ve not experienced Dia pour Homme, but based upon the reviews here, it seems the performance of Bel Ami Vetiver is better. I find Bel Ami Vetiver to be a very high quality, extremely classy, and great performing perfume. No complaints with longevity here. It’s one of my favorites.

If the quality was better, it would be nice to keep in my wardrobe.
It is precious that there is not much mainstream desginer releases retro feel perfumes as such anymore, except for some Chanel Les Exclusifs and a few Tom Fords. Bel Ami vintage and especially Equipage vintage are my favorates all the time. But I have to say, Bel Ami Vetiver is basically a poor man’s Amouage Dia Man, half the price, half the quality, half the complexity, and half the longevity.
Thank you @CesareBorgia. I am also wondering why my bottle (produced in 2014) performs far below the statistic numbers on this page but fortunately consistent with dozens of J-C Ellena’s works. By the way, I like your nickname.

My second day of wearing this really classy scent..what can I say?It so classy, refined, polite…I love it so much, but I wasn’t expecting so…The opening was just ok.,but when it develops, and then drydown, just gorgeous…I wonder why no one did mention similarities with Terre d hermes..I got that vibe, bitterness and orange note.It definitly is not for kids,(early 20′)clubbing etc,..but for refined gentleman, who know what he wants, knows his wardrobe,in a pair of Edward Green shoes, that is Bel Ami Vetiver. It could easily be my signature scent(or anyone else’s)…I love it so much. Thanks Hermes for that.
    ….
As time goes by,and the Bel Ami V is a very short period of time in my posession,I appreciate it more and more.It became the classiest scent in my collection, and most versatyle one.I really don’t have many scents that matches Bel A V.The pursuit for holy grail is still out there…or it will never end…

I am a huge fan of the original Bel Ami, (as well as Equipage and Rocobar). The DNA of those masculine, somewhat old school, but high end powerhouse scents really speak to me.
I pretty much blind bought this just bc I was convinced I would love anything Bel Ami. Sadly, I was disappointed.
It has absolutely nothing I like better than the original. The extra vetiver note changes the perfect balance the original achieved. To me, this just not a very enjoyable, pleasing, or satisfying scent.
Its not horrible, but I just dont like it and cant find a need to ever wear it when I have so many colognesI enjoy much more. Dont know what else I can say, other than obviously this is all just my opinion.

Fans of Bel Ami will not be disappointed with this. The name says it all: this is Bel Ami with the vetiver note made stronger. You can clearly smell Bel Ami in this, the only difference being the vetiver creeps to the forefront over time. By 3 or 4 hours, this is mostly vetiver, with a leathery backdrop. I didn’t think the blend of vetiver and leather would work, but it does. Almost smells like gingerbread, but not heavy or sweet. Great scent here, even if it doesn’t project as loudly as Bel Ami. Longevity is excellent at about 8 or 9 hours.
    My rating: 9/10

I first experience Bel Ami in 2004, appreciated afar on an older Italian colleague. I asked what his fragrance was and he told me and I bought it online for my hapless ex. Shame neither of us was vindictive when we parted ways, so he kept it largely unused. Regrets.
I took the “Up” Pixar DVD and it felt like spite. Little did I know.
So, I just bought Bel Ami Vetiver from Hermes via F X and although different, it’s just gorgeous.
I’m thinking of maybe a hint of Channel Allure or Dior Dune to add femininity, or leave it solo?
Anyone who bags this fragrance just hasn’t lived long enough to appreciate the beauty of an exquisite Hermes scent.

I would like to start by saying that I am a huge vetiver fan. Bel Ami Vetiver is THE vetiver I have been waiting for. Leather and vetiver mixed with citrus, genious! Absolutely intoxicating and masculine. I have gotten a lot of compliments when I wear it. It lasts 7-8 hours on me.

He is your best friend from long time ago. Always rebellious, he is now in his 30’s, single, still good looking, intelligent and has a good taste for art and literature. He is there when you need him most but he is not pushy or annoying. Arriving at your house tonight for a friends gathering, he is sporting a leather jacket. He just had a cigarette outside but he is trying to cover it up with a jolly rancher. You greet him with a hug, appreciating his friendship and the times you have been together.

    Sensual, serious, gentleman..
Perfect for business events, my girlfriend loves it too, so this will be my all year around formal suit&tie fragrance.
May be it’s only me, but in the drydown it’s very similar to dior eau Sauvage eau de parfum, although mhyre doesn’t exist in the notes but it is very balsamic to my nose. Two thumbs up

BV is not as deep as original Bel Ami but more wearable during the day or at the office. Very nice, similar vibe but worn for different occasions. Both are mature and classy, cool weather scents with very good projection and longevity. Not for kids, I own them both. Donjuandemarco above has it right a sophisticated business fragrance.

  15. :

Not a fan. The original Bel Ami already had vetiver in it and it was a perfect fragrance. No need to mess with perfection. This vetiver smells candied, like a jolly rancher was melted and mixed into the blend. A discordant mix, and an immediate scrubber for me. Everyone around me hated it. Weird weird choices from JCE

This might sound weird, but this fragrance gives me a kinda salty leather vibe. Deep, warm, masculine, and an interesting balance between classy and rugged (think Sean Connery’s James Bond). Could be worn with a leather jacket or a suit. Performance is outstanding, so go light on the trigger if you’ll be in close quarters.

I have tried it several times and I’m sure now I won’t buy it. But…
Actually, the problem is that I find it very difficult to see it as an independant composition. The original Belami is there in the background and if you are-like me- a very big fan of it your nose can’t help missing what makes you like the original one in the first place.
Personally I can’t feel much of the vetiver. I feel a much sweeter version. So this one is not bad at all. I just love and adore the original Belami so I’m not looking for any improved version.
    Belami: 10/10
    Belami Vetiver: 9/10 😉

I just tried a sample of this. It’s totally not what I expected from the notes listed. I expected an in-your-face macho affair, but this is really quiet, subdued, and peaceful. By comparison I get the same peaceful vibe from Tauer L`Air du Desert Marocain.
The notes are hard to describe because it’s so well blended. I can only pick out the leather and vetiver. I’ve had problems with most of the main notes listed before – vetiver, styrax, elemi – but they’re all subdued here. The overall effect is sort of an earthy/woody blend with a little warmth and sweetness.
I’m not getting much sillage but I only tried one spray. And not everything has to have maximum sillage. I could see this being a great one to rotate in to give your nose (and your co-workers) a rest now and then. Or if you’re in a crowd or close quarters, I couldn’t see anyone getting offended by this. Just a really pleasant fragrance all around.

    “Mixing business with leather”
    -Beck
Hermes Bel Ami Vetiver is just simply that sweet, earthy, leather dandy juice you never knew you needed. This is a hit plain and simple! From the opening we get that signature Hermes quality and class. As with the original Bel Ami you are greeted with a deep rich leather and it is much darker and rugged in tone. With Bel Ami Vetiver the rough edges are all sanded off and every thing is lightened up a bit with a very sweet, earthy vetiver. While the original Bel Ami shouts, dandy out on the town in the winter but he really wants to be indoors. Bel Ami Vetiver is the dandy who wants to take a stroll or drive with the top down. Swapping that navy blue business suit for something gray or green and the tie stays at home.
Back to the opening. The leather, vetiver and styrax unleash a warm, sweet and earthy volley that evokes parisian spring in all its’ glory. As the scent evolves it only gets richer and better. The elemi, amber and cardamom keep the earthy spiciness rolling. The civet, iris, patchouli and vanilla round out the scent and give it a lovely floral, earthy, slightly animalic rounding out.
Bel Ami Vetiver is a stylish fragrance that takes a legendary masterpiece and gIves it a breath of fresh air and a bit of youth. Bel Ami Vetiver is perfect for spring days and nights and works in any social situation. Give this a few sprays before making that late morning meeting with your friends at the cafe to discuss plans for the day or to recount stories of past adventures.

This is an excellent release. An exemplary well conceived strategy how to deal in a respectful way with such a stellar perfume like the original Bel Ami. I would even go as far that this is one of the best vetiver focused releases from the last years – simply love the fact that it is something with general broad distribution in ‘normal’ shops. In Europe, certainly one of the best vetiver’s one even can find at an airport. Hermes really impresses me in being one of the very few houses, who – particularly when it comes to their men’s fragrance range – manage to stick to an impeccable pedigree, avoiding the flanker confusion and with this one and the other available Ellena modifications of Amazone and Equipage, yet, do engage with contemporaneity. Top recommendation.

I just got a sample of Bel Ami Vetiver.
Don’t like it. It’s boring, musty, mouldy, dated. While I do see its quality (well blended, never falls apart), it’s just not for me.
I think I just expected something more uplifting. Also I had hoped the vetiver to be more prominent. Instead I get soft, musky carnation. Should have been named Bel Ami Carnation!

I have wanted this fragrance for years, and I finally own it. This is so beautiful. It is a really powdery scent with a sweet and resinous vibe. The vetiver is not harsh at all, this is a very smooth scent that smells amazing. To me this is a sophisticated and classy scent that will get you compliments.

Saw this for the first time at an airport duty free and my friend dibbed it before I could put my hands on it….It is a beautiful soft woody fragrance, not a harsh green vetiver, but rather a powdery touch. Perfectly unisex. I don’t know what the original Bel Ami smells like, but this flanker is amazing. I thought I was imagining the iris but looking at the notes there really is some in it. This would probably appeal more to the “Dior Homme” type of guy than to someone who is looking for a vetiver a la Encre Noir or Terre d’Hermes… try before you buy!!

Bel Ami Vetiver opens like a dusty old book that drops a crisp hundred-dollar bill at your well-heeled feet. Of course, while wearing this updated flanker of the ’86 classic, you wouldn’t deign to bend over for such a puny denomination. But forget the high-toned Hermès crest embossed on the surface of this elegantly simply bottle for a minute and turn down your nose, a little, would you? Behind this comfortingly traditional scent is a rather approachable, if not a bit stodgy, character. Bel Ami V. is that one older relative or acquaintance from a by-gone era whom you simultaneously admire and secretly mock for their stubborn attachment to “the way things were”. That said, in step with the current trend of wearing slightly “dated” scents, Bel Ami V. finds its name on the guest list of nearly any social occasion for the modern gentleman in and beyond his 30th-something year in 2017. And much like the Maupassant reference would suggest, expect to find it generously sprayed on that obvious but still charming social climber making the rounds at your local soirée.
Bel Ami V. opens with an obnoxiously overbearing powdery note typical of its genre coupled with a slow-burning spiciness that comes across as a masala created for a more continental palette. Only after a few moments of this decidedly feminine curry flavour does the scent settle into an unmistakably masculine Russian leather. Although lavender and cedar are not listed as featured notes, I am confident both appear in conspicuous amounts as basenotes. Like it’s 80s and 90s brethren, its sillage is as subtle as rocketfuel so wearer beware. Perhaps surprisingly, however, its longevity starts to fizzle out just before cocktail hour so be sure to reapply while the night is still young. All in all, a mature and perfectly pleasant variation of the Sieuzac creation that separates the plebs from the patricians.

If you enjoy sweet, powdery fragrances, you might want to try this.
I was left wanting the vetiver aspect to be a little more prominent. I felt like I was searching for it behind everything else that’s going on here.
    Longevity was good.
Strikes me as a fall/winter fragrance. Seems like it would be disagreeable in warmer temps.

Bel Ami Vetiver is the most wonderful perfume! Warm and yet cool at the same time! It’s a veritable wonder. I love and adore vetiver, and it’s this perfume to a tea. I love the bitter, smoky, warm, dry, cozy feeling of it, and could wear it till the cows come home!!! It smells supremely divine on my husband, and I totally melt all over him whenever he wears it – but I wear it myself more than he does! He loves it on me too, and it’s softer and sweeter on me. I think also, the patchouli makes it richer and sweeter on me than him. I also love patchouli, and it’s perfect in this stunning gem. It’s also beautifully soft from the leather and resins, and has a lovely slightly herbal and powdery floral feel, and the dry-down is really soothing, warm and balmy.
It lasts and lasts, and moves through lots of variations of smells, so it’s not at all boring. I completely adore it.

bel ami is a very formal perfume.
this is spicy and very bitter.
i think it is suitable for winter and autumn.

A great perfumer such as J-C Ellena, can make a great fragrance of contrasts. Here he has made, what is so enjoyable to us in a fragrance, when it is both warm and fresh!
I’v placed this as my signature in this cool Fall season. I think its the perfect Fall fragrance, the resins are warming, with the fruity leather, and freshness of vetiver.

Bel Ami Vetiver is a classy, sophisticated, intelligent man; this is not one who smells like the produce section of the grocery store. As someone who is usually underwhelmed by the fruity scents now trending in masculine fragrances, I must admit that this makes me weak in the knees.

Few days ago I’ve had an amazing opportunity to receive a sample of Bel Ami vintage.
This is a real true succesor, however it should be focused on completely different notes.
Still, the leather, not vetiver, is a star here. It’s softened by grassy vetiver and woods. However, on the other side, civet (or some other animalic note) sharpens it up.
Longevity on my skin is 8-9 hours, sillage is soft to medium.
As a whole, it’s a fragrance that fits for the formal wear so well. Very elegant.
There is an old Bel Ami touch to it. And that is the most beautiful thing.

I requested a few free samples from Hermes but this was not one of them so I have been reluctant to try it. So it’s been a rainy cool summer day so I figured it’s a good time to wear it after it’s been sitting around for months. I have never smelled the original but I have read reviews and no many love it. I must say that this is a love at first sniff which does not happen often for me. It’s a classy/elegant scent. Creed fanboys will say it’s an old man scent as it is not aimed at the young crowd. It’s more of a gentlemen’s scent and is appropriate for all seasons. The opening is a big blend of spices and leather which gradually dies down to a soft warm slightly sweet vibe with the vetiver becoming more pronounced. I have had it on for about 4 hours and projection is still quite noticeable. Give this a try as I mentioned that Hermes mails out free samples at least in the US, IDK about elsewhere.

Absolutely stunning! It’s unquestionably elegant and classic. Started with an overwhelming mixture of wood and spice. That’s what I like about the whole classic line of Hermes, that slap-in-your-face kind of confidence and richness. Then it settled into something soft but with great depth. I can definitely smell vertiver on my skin with a warm and sweet background, but on my clothes it’s more leathery and, interesting enough, citrusy.

Totally agree with Micavana , for me it is the best purchase in 2015, what a beautiful scent it is. It is vetyver scent with such a beautiful twist , it is i so masculine and yet modern and wearable. masterpiece at very reasonable price.

WOW! Just WOW! And have I mentioned WOW?? Yes, this one IS that good. I may take some slack for this, but I would put Bel Ami Vetiver up there with the original Bel Ami and heads and shoulders above the current formulation of Bel Ami.
A FANTASTIC leather scent. I also get wood, spicy, smoke, amber and a few other note. It is so well blended that it is hard to pick out many individual notes. A very elegant and classical scent, yet still modern. It doesn’t have a dated feel to me at all.
To be honest, it took a few wearing for me to come to love this one. So if you like great Leather scents, you should try this, wear it a few times and decide for yourself.

    Very different to Bel Ami.
The same warm soft leather note, reminiscent of Cuir de Russie, but mixed with cinnamon, vanillin amber, chocolate and caramel, along with the beginnings of a vetiver smokiness. As it settles the sweet/spice notes fade leaving a deep sexy leather/vetiver accord. Dark, sophisticated and very masculine.
I like this very much. The original was always refined and classy, but seems much more modern. I normally steer clear of gourmand notes, but the vanillin amber and spice is in perfect harmony with the earthy smokiness of vetiver and the softly animalic leather. A big improvement on the original Bel Ami: how will I ever wear it again??

  49. :

    3 out of 5

I love those full fat, spicy, animalic leather creations of years past, but as I am on the wrong side of 30, I just cannot convincingly carry them. I knew I had to try Bel Ami Vetiver from the moment I learned of Jean Claude Ellena, the master of all things sheer and wearable. Bel Ami Vetiver is basically a practice in contradiction and I doubt any other perfumer could have managed to pull this off to as much success.
Bel Ami Vetiver is light and long lasting, cozy and fresh, old world and modern. The most straightforward way for me to describe this would be a sophisticated, tasteful Spicebomb with less sugar and more spice. The leather here smells more suede-like than actual leather – think Hermessence Cuir d’Ange. Speaking of Hermessence, there is a similar nuttiness that I get with Vetiver Tonka here as well.
I honestly believe I have found my holy grail of leather fragrances. One I can wear year round.

Very nice. Smells like a mature gentleman but sans old-man characteristics. More brown than black, more overcast than sunny, more soft than sharp. Just a dash of spiciness. Mostly, it’s earthy but clean. Rural, but New England rural.
If you had three, very expensive horses, and you kept them in a new barn built of reclaimed, dark wood and expensive lighting and neatly raked wood chips on the floor… this is what you might wear when you’re out there doing light, non-sweaty chores in $900 brown boots.
Awesome quality that embodies luxury. A few spritzes of this, oxford shoes, brown, perforated leather luggage in the trunk of your classic Jaguar XK next to the Williams Sonoma picnic basket with two bottles of wine and you’re set.

I wanna call this Bel Ami Junior! Bel Ami has been dialed down by half and definitely marked by an undercurrent of very smoky vetiver. The composition dries down to something that smells like Hermessance Poivre Samarcande. This is really good!

If anyone’s interested, here are the official (I guess) notes:
Cardamom, elemi resin, basil, cloves, iris, patchouli, russian leather, vetiver, amber(I guess it’s about ambergris, but who knows), civet, styrax, vanilla
I haven’t gotten my nose on Bel Ami, but this is wonderful Woody, spicy with soft, cozy leather added to it. This fragrance is very warm, comforting, almost suede like. When I wear it, I feel like I’m wearing gentle, soft, delicate leather gloves. Beautiful!
Longevity is 7-9 hours, sillage is medium.
A great fragrance in good, 90’s style, still modern to this day though.

I tried it on my skin today. After about half an hour in settles to a very classic and familiar combination that is at the same time very distinctive. The dry down is dominated by leather and vetiver and as the time passes Vetiver becomes more and more noticeable.
It’s style is a dignified one and clearly fits a mature gentleman. I really enjoyed the smell while it was on my skin. It has good longevity and moderate silage.

I rarely reach for this one because of the musky leather note. It’s a quality fragrance but fell way short of my expectations.

Bel Ami Vetiver has a masculine ‘dressed to kill’ feel. There is a sense of wanting to be well-dressed to wear this Fragrance. Hermes Fragrances all posses something enjoyable – evoking a feeling of quality. The scents have a certain life to them. Although, longevity of some might not be outstanding. Sometimes the opposite of long-lasting.
This particular Fragrance has an interesting sillage. It does come off a bit strong in the beginning but the mixture of notes level themselves out. Warm spices, smooth suede/leather, oriental notes along with a floral yet sweet aura. Once it settles, wood and amber leave a pleasant skin-scent that makes one feel like pure class.

A great classic perfume that keeps an evident heritage from its original version, but with an up to date formulation whcih is more susceptible to keep it modern and elegant. I loved the real original Bel Ami, but this new one is also a real pleasure to wear if you want a classic elegant leathery sweet fragrance to make you feel self-confident.

I bought Bel Ami on my way overseas – a duty-free purchase when the frag was brand new. I loved it and grieved when it was gutted to conform with new SCCS regulations. This “flanker” was a most gratifying surprise: it revives the true ghost of original Bel Ami – in a slightly new costume, family resemblance intact – a face I thought I’d never see again.

Bel Ami notes wrapped around the Calèche eau de toilette heart notes. With hmmmm… what could it be… CUMIN? It is rare that I diss on an Ellena creation, but this is a case of the emperor’s new notes. I like the whole composition, and it’s a nice formula, but it’s a mish-mash of Calèche eau de toilette, Bel Ami accord, and that cumin note that you might as well expect from every Hermès creation these days except maybe for Voyage d’Hermès Pure Parfum, Terre d’Hermès, and Eau d’Orange Verte. Don’t get me wrong – I love Calèche, and this is a good offering. I just don’t think it should be called Bel Ami. This formula shares a resemblance to the current Bel Ami in the beginning, but it dries down to a sweeter version of Calèche EDT. I think Calèche smells better.

Now I understand why Hermès choice Jean-Claude Ellena a true master, creating fragrance’s which leave you mesmerized. Each fragrance which JCE created, both sex’s have the luxury of being in awe after being able to smell so good with so many complementing you due to Mr. Ellena.
    Now about this phenomenon juice…
I own Bel Ami and just yesterday I had to go and buy Bel Ami Vetiver after spraying it on my wrist. The entire day I couldn’t help myself smelling my wrist as everyone around me was wondering what the heck was I doing.
The 3 notes..top-citrus, mid-leather and base-Vetiver gives this frag a real animalistic/attractive aroma and makes it SEXY
When you first spray this frag, you get a rush of leather with a smokey/incense note coming from Vetiver, a very high-quality lasting well over 8hrs on my skin.
Afterwards I pickup a smig of citrus notes delicately balancing the overall ATTRACTIVE green earthy aroma.
Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting well past 10hrs…Silage is very high on my skin probably because of my PH.
    Final thoughts,
Bel Ami is more of a leathery blend with a woodsy base. Bel Ami Vetiver also has a definite leather blend with a unique vib of somkey Vetiver making it absolutely amazing..a real versital frag which could be worn all 4 seasons.
Vetiver making this juice a lively woodsy-spicy-oriental aroma.
I enjoy wearing this juice so much that if someone else doesn’t like it…too bad.
I highly recommend this fragrance and have made this fragrance one of my signature fragrance in my top 10 frag’s. Not that a woman couldn’t wear it, it has more of masculine aroma….10/10 A five ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ juice.
