Woody , cheap cotton candy brut like aftershave …thats all this smells like. Over hyped. I dont want my man smelling like cheap cotton candy. Nope!

Short and simple, this is sex in a bottle. Very attractive sillage. Puts your mind on one thing…

    Quite a remarkable journey!
I sprayed this on in a department store and it lasted two days on my arm and nearly two weeks on the jacket I was wearing at the time.
BR540 is mesmerising, it constantly shape-shifts between accords and notes so you can never quite get an angle on it. This anti-linear quality has completely won me over. One moment I have a candy-floss/ ambroxan infusion, the next I have a rather woody gingerbread and tree-sap, there are other combinations but this stuff is too complex for me to figure them out thus far. As Zuuus.P mentioned below, the notes I pick up are not the ones listed.
I could not afford a full bottle, but have settled for the official 11ml travel atomiser (someone was selling them separately). When I finally can afford a full bottle, this baby is mine!
If you love the art of fragrance, please get your nose on this.
Elusive, like a dream you can’t quite remember. Multi-faceted, like someone/ something you can never quite figure out, but are nonetheless fascinated by them/ it. This fragrance has an almost ethereal quality, it sticks in your mind, almost teases you with it’s other-worldly nature. Such a strange feeling to experience from a fragrance.
The best analogy I can give is that BR540 reminds me of a film by a masterful director such as David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick. Whilst I may not fully understand every single nuance or twist that develops, I learn a little more each time I experience it.
A genuinely stunning composition, a true masterpiece of perfumery!

Just the most beautiful thing in the world…Super high quality, beast mode status and wonderful well structured perfume for me. To me this smells NOTHING like any of the notes listed. Smells like a sweet pastry store to me. Also like squished strawberries mixed with caramelized sugar…with a touch of saffron…
However! When I smelled this I though that everyone will LOVE this and there is no way someone could not like this perfume. Boy was I wrong…Everyone I asked what do they think said it smells like hospital, death, retirement and the most specific was the reaction of my boyfriend: “a purulent wound repeatably covered with the same, already soaked bandage on a senior female”. I have no words for these comments…I just do not understand where do they come from whatsoever.

I almost hate myself for loving this so much!
If you are looking for a luxe, well-rounded gourmand and have a few organs to donate… if you are a fan of Indult ‘Tihota’ meets Maison Margiela ‘By the fireplace’, this is something you should experience!
I was browsing a fragrance counter and the sales associate, based on my love for MFK and my ~style~ suggested this one would fit me like a glove. I shrugged that suggestion off after a quick sniff because it genuinely felt like she was trying to sell me the most expensive thing on the floor… but It was the only fragrance in the past year that grabbed my attention right away and I couldn’t get it off my mind.
AS A SELF-PROCLAIMED RETIRED VANILLA-FANATIC… this fit right into my cozy comfort zone of sweetness with depth, a little bit burnt, a little bit full of cashmere, a little bit musky, a little bit unisex… this stuff is like slipping into a red velvet disco catsuit. All eyes (noses) on you. Burnt sugar, fireplace, a wisp of pine sap… strangely ethereal, if it works for you.
I have NEVER fared well with cedar, resinous notes and especially jasmine… but here I am facing my ultimate fragrance nightmare concoction with open arms. Running towards it on the beach, Baywatch style.
I, against my shoulder angel’s wishes… shelled out for the full bottle, and what really sold me was the length of time this lasts. I spray sparingly, since I don’t like being ‘that guy’, but 9 hours+ later I’m still surrounded by a soft veil of Baccarat Rouge. No burnt rubbery weirdness, no benzoin avalanche drydown nightmare… this is the first time I’m pleased to flaunt a fairly linear fragrance.
Is this unlike ANYTHING out there… no! Is this well-crafted, cozy, and something of a staple? I think so.

In my opinion, Francis kurkdjian’s best fragrance. A facinating scent. Burnt sugar, safron and resin over a salty ambery base. It’s almost like a ozonic/aquatic gourmand. This woody fragrance is super versatile, perfect for all seasons. It’s so sophisticated and luxurious! Perfect for both men and women. Very good longevity, and moderate sillage. 10/10!
Update: I have now also tried the Extrait version. It’s more thick and dense, but almost similar in scent. What I like best about the EDP, is the salty/mineral amber base. In the Extrait version, the mineral/amber note is more sweet than salty. Therefore I still prefer the EDP, and don’t see the point of spending the extra cash for the Extrait.

BR540 EDP is an all around 10/10 scent. I have owned my bottle for over a year and during that time I have used over 50ml. That alone says a lot as I have over 100 great scents. I’m left with 20 ml and the question if I should go with another aesthetically perfect bottle or the monster 200 ml. I will never be without this fragrance, ever. Sillage smell and performance define the word perfect. There is a magic to this scent. It is strong and at the same time very transparent. The individual parts come together to create a uniquely unified whole that is so much more. 5 star fragrance.

I smelled this fragrance at a person’s place, who was shrinking his 500+ fragrance collection. I have smelled over 30 fragrances that afternoon and this is the only one that got stuck in my head. It has been over two months since I sniffed it and I cannot get it out of my head. I have never experienced this before. It is a strange experience. It’s like I can smell it by just thinking about it. So I could not stop myself from buying a bottle.
This fragrance is more than a scent. It is a scented journey. An olfactory wonder. A masterpiece. There is something about this scent, the way it smells, the way it performs. It is the most mysterious fragrance I own. When you spray it on, you smell it, but you kind of not smell it. However, even if you do not smell it, you know it is there. You sort of ‘feel’ its presence.
I have not worn it in public yet, because it is quite a daring fragrance and a bit on the feminine side if you ask me.
I bought a 200ml bottle and decided to decant 100ml of it, to pay off some of the mortgage I had to take to buy a bottle. The tube coming out of the bottle is not really suited to extract the juice with a syringe, so I taped-off a beaker and sprayed the juice until I got the required amount of juice needed for my decants (yes, my finger hurt afterwards). After filling the vials, I put the beaker in a room upstairs. The empty (yes, empty) beaker has been standing in this room for one and a have week and the whole room has been smelling like Baccarat Rouge for one and a half week. This is beyond beastmode.
    Scent: 11/10
Projection: 11/10 (Projects very far for a good 4 hours and does not really come close to the skin for another 4 hours)
    Sillage: 10/10
Longevity: 11/10 (14h+ on skin, days on clothes)
Versatility 7/10 (Only for the coolest of days)
    Uniqueness: 9/10
Price-performance: 9/10 (It is expensive, but beautiful and beastly)
    Total: 9.5

I asked for suggestions for a scent to go with a dress I want to wear to a fancy occasion and this was recommended to me by several people on Facebook Fragrance Friends. Unfortunatelty, I’m in the don’t much like it group. First on, I get dry, metallic saffron wood, with no other notes discernible on me. It’s linear as hell, goes on bitter dry and doesn’t change at all, all day. I’m very disappointed. It’s not bad, but it’s a bit like wearing saffron on my wrist. Not nearly interesting enough to merit the cost. I guess it works better on others coz it’s hailed all over as a masterpiece. It’s also called sweet, but I get nothing sweet (amazing!I normally amp sweet like there’s no tomorrow). Boring. Linear, overpriced.

I am so confused with all the ecstatic reviews which show so much affection and adoration for this perfume. Really, I don’t know what to think. I smelled Baccarat Rouge on blotter, on my skin, on other people – many times. I even have a colleague using this perfume very often, so I always recognize this scent on her. And you know what? For me it smells disgusting, like not so many perfumes in the world. It’s extraordinarily unpleasant for my olfactive perception. Maybe my nose is kinda ‘broken’ and I just can’t hear the delightful fragrant melody which enchants so many reviewers. The only thing I can say – I prefer all women wearing this keep their distance from me as far as possible.

  12. :

AMAZING!!!! Exquisite!!!! This is what the gods (by any name) wear! This is really exceptional and very unusual to me. I have sampled so, so many scents from some of the loftiest to some of the simplest. There is nothing like this (except the extrait of course). This is a new favorite and may actually become my signature.
The notes blend like a perfect symphony…the only other few I can hold up to this would be Mon Precioux Nectar by Guerlain and perhaps Portrait of a Lady by Malle. It is just so unusual. And can appeal to so many of us that love a particular type. Floral, oriental, gourmand, this has something for you to experience. It is not a gourmand to me, but there is a bit of a caramel note as other reviewers have noted. I get osmanthus and honeyed pink peppercorns (is there such a thing?) instead of cedar but with that sweet powdery aspect of cedar.
Update: Week two – kinda strange but I am getting some celery (?) now?

    ★★★★★
Baccarat Rouge 540 has the power to charm the majority despite its complex artisanal composition (usually such compositions are intended for a minority that seek an olfactory adventure).
Its abstract character is achieving that impact by giving this blend a chameleon quality, an ability to be interpreted as different distinctive smells. It’s cotton candy without being gourmand. It’s strawberry jam but also salty and mineral. It’s fruity cola -like Luca Turin stated- without being childish.
Woody notes and ambergris balance its sweetness in a way that makes it relevant for any gender. It’s airiness makes it wearable in warmer evenings as well without being out of place when it’s not winter or autumn. It lasts the whole day but is never intrusive. There’s a transparency to it which is an important element that supports the elegance of the composition and prevents a loud and cloying result.
The long dry down rewards you with it’s mineral saltiness coming to the fore, a perfect end to its woody sweet journey.
Baccarat Rouge 540 is olfactory flair.

I have to admit, this is one of my most complimented fragrances that I wear (only Amouage Jubiliation XXV garners more compliments). I wore several testers of this before purchasing this (along with the body cream) and it is a fragrance that has presence, but will not “choke out” anyone around you when wearing it. there is great balance from the Jasmin, amber and ambergris notes, and 540 is my favorite fragrance along with Jub XXV.
If you want a juice that stands out from what everyone else is wearing, give 540 serious consideration.

So this is REALLY interesting and would LOVE to hear Fragrantica explain how this happened. I already wrote a review for this, and it magically was deleted!? Gee, I wonder why? Was it because I wrote an honest review that wasn’t glowing and fawning? An overpriced overhyped generic candy sweet fragrance with poor performance? Funny how another person mentioned the EXACT same thing and their review was deleted as well. Nothing fishy going on there!
So I gave this a whirl, and to be honest, this isn’t as legendary and fantastic as so many people claim. Don’t get me wrong, it’s alright, but not cult favorite great or even good.
I was really surprised how flat it is. It has almost no opening, middle, and dry down. It’s just one smell more or less the entire time. It also is fairly low sillage and performance. Which again, for such a hyped/expensive talked about fragrance is surprising. Skin scent within an hr or two. Very sad. Thought this would be over the top strong and last all day. It is soft to moderate at best and lasted 5-7 hrs as a skin scent almost the entire time.
The smell is basically a mix of what a lot of people have mentioned. Somewhat sweet candy like Pine resin, it’s reminiscent of Vert d’Encens. It reminds me of cheap teenage girls malls scent at times. So candy sweet. It’s a light overall texture, not heavy and cloying. It also smells a tad like clean laundry of a unique kind. And that’s pretty much it.
Decent stuff, but definitely cool aid for the masses. This isn’t unique, beautiful, or transcendent. Fille en Aiguilles from SL is similar and WAY better than this overpriced overhyped stuff and costs a fraction of this. Plus has great performance.

@chornobryva My review about Grand Sois has deleted by readers which is so amusing for me. People dont want to see negative reviews about overhyped perfumes that they love. Actually, I have a bottle of Baccarat Rouge and to be honest it is one of my most complimented fragrance so far but it is not me! I find Baccarat Rouge like a woman who has lots of plastic surgery to become beautiful. Beautiful but not friendly. Artificial!

I’m sorry, but I can BARELY smell this. I must be anosmic to it or something. What I can smell is a sort of sweet, sappy, woody scent, but it’s very faint.

  19. :

Am I the only one getting caramel? It smells like caramel.
It’s sweet, as others have noted, with hints of woods and resins, which keeps Baccarat Rouge from becoming too reminiscent of true, vanilla-laden toffee.
But, yeah, caramel… Caramel for adults.
I am pleasantly surprised as I am a gourmand fiend.
    Longevity: good. Sillage: adequate
Edit: You know what? I really enjoy the composition of Baccarat Rouge, but sillage is absolutely zero on me, so this is sadly a no-no

I’m lost. Usually my skin amps sweet, so I expected this to really come up sweet on me. Other reviews also adore this, and by the remarks made, I also expected a rich, oriental or at least layered stunner. What I get is a metallic, dry woody saffron scent. Nothing else. It goes onto my skin like saffron powder from a spice bottle with cedar wood notes behind and doesn’t change all day long. It lasts for ages, but it’s linear and frankly boring on me. My skin must just dislike this scent. I sure wish I had gotten a chance to smell what other people are smelling! I’m unenthused, I’m afraid.

Upsets me how this has been placed in the “marmite” category of fragrances. This is without a doubt a true work of art and smells so original. The feeling I get when I wear this, fewer fragrances have given me. A true masterpiece *****
Scent – 10/10 – Smells like European royalty
Silage – 10/10 – Lingers in rooms (similar to Aventus)
Projection – 10/10 – Many people complain of projection with this one but on my skin people have smelt me from afar well into the life of the fragrance from first spritz. Maybe it’s my batch?
Longevity – 10/10 – Lasts about 24 hours on my skin and months on clothes (my best fragrance for longevity).
I repeat masterpiece, and for that reason it comes amongst my top 5 frags of all time.

Francis Kurkdjian was inspired by the Baccarat museum in Paris to recreate the magic of molten crystal and the art of glassblowing. He imagined a poetic alchemy of materials where airy notes of water jasmine and spicy saffron mingle with the mineral facets of ambergris and woody cedar. To celebrate the 250’s birthday of the house, Baccarat joins forces with Francis Kurkdjian to create a fragrance evoking the history of his know-how. The name reveals a magical moment: the metamorphosis of the crystal that mixes with a gold powder of 24 carats and reaching a melting at 540 ° C is adorned with a bright red hue. A great scent for connoisseur! I really like this scent but I recommend to try it before you buy because it is a special one and also a pricey one.

Sure it has vibes of caramel, Cotton candy or could be called gourmand scent, but when you spray it you will shock ! Scent smashes you! I was thinking I never had sniffed fragrance like that! For few seconds fragrance wears you instead of you wearing it and takes a little time to you to get dominant again and wear it!… unisex scent! 60% feminine and 40% masculine. Luxury rich scent. It projects good but not beastly! I mean it’s everywhere but no where! Projects soft and airy…. beautiful ….. grand soir is also beautiful after this

Tried this after having it on my “to try” list forever as so many people rate this so highly. Alas it was a let down. Very plain, not much going on, and what was going on smelled kind of immature. It almost has no dimension to it, with very little change from opening to dry down.
It’s a sweet pine and bubble gum type fragrance, that upon dry down (which happens pretty quickly) also has a clean laundry type note coming in. A little bit reminiscent of Vert d’Encens by TF. Very shocked with the poor performance on my skin. Majority of reviews having extreme longevity and great sillage. I got 4-6 hrs longevity and soft sillage at best, turning to a skin scent quickly. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. I’m neutral on it. It’s decent smelling, but smells somewhat like some cheap teenage girls candy perfume or something. More feminine than I thought it would be and way overpriced and not worthy of the hype. It’s just a generic mall scent packaged in a super expensive niche bottle with a super silly price in MHO.

After all the hype and phenomenal reviews I had to get my nose on this. It lived up to everything I read. Absolutely stunning!! The saffron note is unique and beautifully spicy. It gets compliments each and every time I wear it. And to be honest with you, I am only wearing the scented body cream, not the actual EDP!

Call me crazy but every time I smell it out of the bottle, I can’t help but smile, laugh and my mood is immediately uplifted. The last time I had such a perfume experience, I think I was maybe 15. No matter what others say about FKurkdjian, one thing is sure: he knows how to translate emotions into scents and that, my friend, is mastery at its finest.

  29. :

Just an absolutely beautiful scent, just be careful with the sprays. For me I go one to the chest(clothing) not skin, and one to the nape of my neck that’s it. Possibly one of the top niche fragrances out there. Thanks for reading

I had always over looked this. Then I took a chance and love it. Yes overally sweet quite linear but mass appealing with quite beastly performance. However tested it against earlier editions of the same frag and thus highlights batch inconsistencies. The 2018 batches perform amazing (2 friends also concur who have the same batch ad mine) yet again dodgy quality control make this a risk but try if you can to nab a batch with an 8 in it (second or third digit in) for ultimate performance and scent. Think caramelized candy floss and that’s pretty much it. But it’s done so beautifully and perfectly unisex

  32. :

One of the most hyped perfumes – I don’t mean for the mainstream market but for the perfume hunters around the world. Being a huge FK fan, I was very curious about this one so I gave it a try – actually 4 full wearings before reviewing it here.
So does it worth the hype? The smell is indeed very beautiful. It is so special and unique, but weirdly enough it feels some kind of familiar. I get the saffron – amber combination which is divine. I believe that it might be slightly more sweet that I would like this to be but this is not my problem with it…
My main problem is… I can hardly smell anything after 3 minutes. I don’t know what is going on and if I am anosmic to some part of it (although this has never happened before, I test perfumes the last 20 years). I spray a lot on me and 3 minutes later all I can smell is my skin. Nothing more. Nothing at all. People around me had said that they can smell something nice only when they are really close to me – and I mean really close encounters actually.
I want to test the extrait de parfum version as well to see if it has better performance – I am still wondering though if this major longevity issue has to do with me or it is an issue anyway.

I’m easily falling in love. And there are many fragrances to be in love at the first spray. Well, this is not one of them. Like many reviewers, I could find the sweet scent of burnt sugar, nuances of medicine, etc. Very nice. But then I felt nauseous for no apparent reason.
It means, it needs another day & another try to be fall in love with this fragrance :). But, yes, the nausea has been disappeared; leaving only pleasant & enchanting scent. Officially my new favourite.

  35. :

    5 out of 5

This is legendary for good reason. It’s unusual, in the sense that you never knew you wanted to smell this way. Sweet, intricate, sensual, imperial. When you first put it on, because of its unapologetic dynamism, you might think it’s too sweet, too intense, too peculiar. Of course, it’s none of that. The combination simmers down to pure perfection. I’ve never liked sweet fragrances but I adore this. I had also never found a fragrance that lasts on me until this one- and it lasts until you decide to wash it off at the end of the day. If there is one sense you get with this scent, it’s that, by wearing it, anything can happen. In the most wonderful way possible.

I was so excited for my blind buy of this perfume to arrive today. However, I’m so sad to say I Hate how it smells on me. I don’t know if I need to give it another chance or not. It had a weird powdery undertone that gave me a headache. I did so much research and I was certain I would absolutely love this scent. I guess it really is all about the chemistry.

One of my wife’s favorite scents. It’s very feminine IMHO and ideal for a classy lady. I smelled it on a guy once at a business meeting and frankly got a little annoyed because he smelled like my wife when she wears this perfume. Down vote me all you wish but this is far from a masculine scent, and very much a female composition to my nose. But that could also be because I’m so use to smelling this on my wife. So if you’re a dude don’t be afraid to try it. You might like it. If you’re a woman, I can almost guarantee you’ll like it and maybe even love it. It’s a masterpiece and I love when my lady wears it.

    Unforgettable.
This is one of my favourite fragrances, and one of those I can trick myself to think I’m smelling when I’m actually not.
It’s opens up very sweet and chemically bright, but as soon as it dries down a bit, one can smell the synthetic, abstract, sweet, woody, resinous masterpiece this fragrance is.
Trying to decrypt this composition is impossible, but there’s definitely a big dose of maltol or ethyl maltol in here. It often makes me think of a luxurious cedar (not pencil shavings) with a syrupy resin-covered bark. Some whiffs remind me of warm plastic, some of fruit jam, some of caramel, and some days I even smell a bit of anise.
As far as performance goes, either I become anosmic to it in 15min, my skin absorbs it too quickly, or projection and duration are terrible.
I have a brand-new 2018 bottle I once sprayed my arm 8 times with. I then waited for 10min and asked my friends to smell me, only to realise they couldn’t and had to get their nose ridiculously close to my skin.
Although it’s not louder, I prefer the Extrait version. It has a brighter orangey opening, it’s woodier, sweeter (never cloying), deeper, more ambergris-y, and feels much more vivid, sensual, radiant, and complete.
Still, if you love it and it works on your skin, GO get this unique, minimalistic, and sophisticated wonder.

I sprayed a card with this yesterday and left it in my home office, not thinking too much of the scent. I walked in this morning and the entire office smells divine! This is a fragrance that leaves me very puzzled. I get a cotton candy meets latex glove vibe from it. It is a sweet very linear fragrance with great performance and pretty good sillage. I like it very much, and look forward to trying more MFK fragrances. I give it a solid 8.75 out of 10.

Oh wow, this smells really good, I just had to write a comment straight away (I’ve just received my 4 sample-pack)!! It’s sweet, but to me it smells more like a masculine perfume than a feminine … oh wait i keep getting whiffs of it : this smells amazing!! Sweet, interesting (you will definetely stand out!), slightly woody and somewhat fresh but has some warmth to it. I’m really impressed!

Did not like it the first time. But after trying on my skin this time, I’m weirdly fascinated by it, because the beginning smells exactly like cotton candy and the base like a clean hospital which I love.

Definitely sharp and prickly to the nose in the opening, so don’t go digging your nose in…On my skin it performs well, its BR-540ish, not as deep, the attempt at the ambegris note may be what causes the nose sting when sniffing too close. For what it costs and that I have a nice sized decant of BR 540, this will help spread the joy of the scent. I’ll be smelling like candy floss for a long time…I’m happy with it, the average nose may not be able to tell the difference in the air.

I just recently came across MFK and was curious about his creations, so I blind bought Baccarat Rouge 540 a week ago. The ingredients sounded promising and delicious, a combination I ve never seen before.
But what a serious let down.
First of all it smells the same from the moment you apply until hours later, there is absolutely NO change or even a different smelling drydown.
To me it smells like candy floss all the way and not the good kind! Even if I like sweet fragrances, this one is plain and simple boring and I agree with others about the ridiculous price tag!
In conclusion this may be a scent for women over 50 IF the want to smell as if they stuck their head in a cotton candy machine.

It smells almost identical to Abercrombie Fierce on me, must be the fir resin… Even my husband noticed it and asked if I was wearing Fierce. It’s a hard pass for me.
Performance is outstanding, couldn’t wash it off and had to wash my hair.

This is the poster child for over priced fragrances. Wear this when you want to be known as “The perfume lady” or “The cologne guy.” It has beast mode projection and 2 sprays will fill a room. Do not wear this to the office because I guarantee you’ll get complaints of wearing too much fragrance. Despite being $300 in which you expect a more natural scent, there’s some synthetic notes to this juice. If you’re an attention whore this is your pimp in a bottle.
As for performance, this stuff is nuclear and just too perfumey for most people. I don’t know how a guy could pull this off because its extremely girly and leans toward old lady perfume. Don’t fall for the hype… Do Not Blind Buy!

Just an FYI…do not wear three sprays of this beast to church…:-o
I decided to add My take on this awesome scent! It’s such a good performer too! Yes it’s slightly synthetic, what isn’t?its like nothing I’ve encoutered before. I can’t even begin to describe it properly! It starts out sweet but quickly goes into a …medicinal smell that is actually addictive! Stays that way on me,,gives off and expensive smell..I know that’s not very helpful,,maybe a musky, freshness at times.quite linear so except for the beginning sweetness you get the same smell till it’s gone..which is quite a long time…and like I said, you only need a little! Very distinctive and unusual.❤️
    Oh,,yes like others mention,,latex! But a good one..lol

Perhaps the best niche fragrance in my opinion.
It has a very moderate sweetness and also has unbelievable deep ambergris body that covers all the notes. The kind of ambergris that Creed old fragrances used to be. It is supported by synthetic amberwood that is carefully added to sustain the longevity without any harshness at all.
Very unisex with best in class longevity and well balanced projection.
A head turner, Unique, rich, luxurious, expensive, safe yet unusual and super beautiful scent.
Two sprays and your are ready to go. Lasts forever. And as time passes it gets sexier..
    Perfect fragrance by all means.
