Description

Amouage or Amouage Gold is the first fragrance of Amouage. It was created by Guy Robert 1983. This is an intensive floral for evening wearing and special occasions.
The top notes blend wild rose, lily-of-the-valley and silver frankincense. The heart notes include myrrh, orris and jasmine. The oriental base is of ambergris, civet, musk, cedarwood and sandalwood.
The luxurious bottle is reminiscent of the Palace Ruwi Mosque which is made from 24% French lead crystal adorned with 24 carat gold plated decoration.

First Amouage I really tried, not just sniffed in a hurry.
“Well, hello mother! Dear aunties, always a pleasure!”
Good old fashioned aldehyde floral with a dirty drydown. Or as some people would say; hairspray, powder and old lady’s funk. Well, my mother smelt like this when I was little and she was definitely not an old lady back then! Or funky.
We live in over senitized society and most of the historical perfumes have long lost their inner animals. Not this one! This is sooooo dirty!
I always liked the proper and the dirty play, all civilized and well mannered and animal in the sac. Public and private, disclosed and hiden. And this one is a hidden gem.
I suppose it was old fashioned even when it came out. Amouage were never an exemple of the originality, but they are of the quality.
Gold is a safe choice if you want vintage aldehyde but without a bad surprise when you open it.

walking through a golden autumn forest…seeing a fawn and burying your fingers in its fur
that is what this perfume smells like to me
    warm, soft, musky, sweet love

Amouage Gold – what an amazing fragrance!I I purchased a very, very expensive tester bottle after receiving a free sample in the mail. Did I mention how expensive that tester was?
But the scent was incredible! Opulent and over the top intense, I imagine beautiful women in a harem applying this lovely fragrance in the hope of becoming the sultan’s cherished favorite. Amouage Gold is 1001 nights on steroids!
I can’t recall any specific notes of the scent, only that it was powerfully strong and lasting. No fading flower, this fragrance stayed put.
My bottle is empty, and I can’t justify the expense of getting a new one. And there’s also the fear that the fragrance may have been changed. Although, how Amouage could possibly be improved is a mystery.
Amazing back story at the top of this page, btw.

Wore this a few days ago. It is a great staple classic scent but it doesnt turn or evolve throughout the day. It just sits nicely on the skin and does its job well. A very solid classic vintage scent but not enough happening in the scent for me to want to smell it more.

Where’s the civet? I smell a powdery rose.

I like it, but it has definitely been done before. For me, it’s very remiscient of Mitsouko, though I think Mitsouko is a better fragrance. I also get the First comparison. If I want a vintage, rich femme fatale fragrance, I’ll likely go for the originals.

Beautifully smooth and Ulta-femme. It smells like a powdery version of No. 5 maybe without the aldehydes? Smells like cuddling up with a classy a mom or other woman you love.

Femme Fatale walking the red carpet in a bottle, making a dramatic entrance with a deep floral-powder opening. I could imagine wearing this for a special occasion in an outdoor setting only. Sampling this as I write, and noting that a little goes a long way (and wishing I had applied it to my wrist and not my neck). Best part is the longevity and woodsy dry down, detecting sandalwood and cedar notes. I admire this fragrance, but not enough to purchase a full bottle.

It’s so funny how different scents wear on different people. I certainly smell the orris in this, which translates on my skin to powder-powder-powder. And the civet (it always makes me happy to see that cute little civet cat in the “notes” photos), not overpowering, but certainly making itself known… I smell the lily of the valley, but the powdery notes are amped on me and drown out the other players. I don’t get a lot of smoke or incense, which I was hoping for. I think if I did, I’d enjoy this a little more.
Here’s what I would say: If you covet and love big ol’ powdery/rosy vintages, reminiscent of a sassy ball-buster from a ’40s movie – certainly seek out a sample of this. It has all those elements and the same sort of wear.
This perfume, while objectively lovely, simply is not me. I imagine this on a flamboyant woman who has a love of red lipstick and who talks with her hands in grand gestures, while wearing lots of jewelry. This is for someone who’s quite confident and has a touch of old-Hollywood drama about her, and who really makes an entrance. In other words, a woman I’d love to be friends with, but whose body I shall never inhabit.

    Gold Extrait 1.7oz 2014 bottle.
    All that glitters is GOLD.
Amouage Gold Extrait sits close to the body than the EDP. It opens with a large, rich lilly of the valley note. Its contents are rich, well blended with the rose as support to the LOV. Silver Frankincense and Myrrh envelop the florals and stay dominant letting you know this is an oriental from a far off land. It incense reminds me of the same note in Opium. Jasmine hug the incense, but in the Extrait the oriental nature takes over Vs the EDPs Aldehydes and Florals. Its a rich cloud of an exemplary oriental floral. Both worn together is magic… Guy Robert has a signature accord that is found in his first composition Lasso, Madame Rochas and here in Amouage Gold. I like to layer it with Lyric.

This is Caleche on steroids. Gorgeous, monumental and completely unwearable. It would suit Jane Russel in Gentlemen Prefer Blonds all right. The rest of us should better stick to Caleche. There is simply no way of living up to it without a Dior gown, red carpet, stage lighting and a symphonic orchestra providing a background.

A big warm Floral Aldehyde that quickly shifts into a vintage opulent rosy powder bomb.
It’s a lovely fragrance but smells similar to chanel no 5.

I’m sorry, but it reminds me too much of something else with deep gold, almost orange color … Dial original antibacterial soap and even more so their handwashing liquid soap…
Yes, it does has deep rich, mysterious and long lasting scent, but as I told above… So it only can go to “Like” category.
On the bright side, ladies could have cheap alternative to Amouage expensive body wash to go with it! LOL

I’ve got an unopened bottle of the vintage version from 2002. Yes, it reminds me of Chanel No5. Yes, it reminds me of the vintage Diva from Ungaro.
But on the other side it is a very sophisticated, elegant, a bit old fashioned, traditional, ladylike, noble scent. I think it is for a bit more matured individuals not teenagers.
On my dry skin it starts with aldehides and continues with an explosion of rosie civet and jasmine. My vintage baby is an EDT version. But simply it is the similar quality like the perfume concentration nowadays. Not a simple scent. I’ve put on around 10am. Now ebout 6 hours later it is still strong musky civet and roses but in the drydown there are woods as well. I did not feel the muguet but we are still in the first date stage wit this beauty. For a formal day it is a good choice but I will keep it for the evenings and special occasions.

I’ve only just discovered that some of the amouage woman range are EDT like the reviewer below states. I guess it would be like many other houses EDP’s in strengths! Last 2 days I’ve worn both Lyric and Memoir (both EDP’s) and they perform really well.

Classic beauty, unadulterated. I am testing Amouage Gold Cristal, a decant of the original vintage from the Perfumed Court. According to their site it has notes of “rose, jasmine and lily of the valley combined with apricot, lime and peach, silver frankincense, myrrh, orris and rock rose of the desert. On a base of ambergris, civet and musk. Amouage Gold Cristal is an Eau de Toilette but wears like a parfum.”
This has a striking similarity to Faberge Flambeau, a discontinued classic launched in 1955. Sparkling rose supported by crisp flowers and greenery, silkened with peaches and orris on a luminous amber-wood base.
I don’t typically wear rose/peach fragrances, but this definitely has a place in a classic wardrobe. Clean, sophisticated, golden, smooth and luxurious. Amouage Gold in all its finery is easy to love.

I’m trying to remember why I thought this would be a good scent to get a sample of when I’m already aware of my distaste for it’s lookalike No 5. This is really everything I don’t like about women’s perfumes. It’s antique smelling in that sweet powdery way I dislike. Sharp, musky in a way that feels removed from nature. Scents like this try to be warm and inviting but just come off cut-throaty and ugly to me. It eventually mellows out into something tolerable after its been sitting for awhile thanks to the myrrh and sandalwood, but it still smells like a nursing home full of Lucy Bacall wannabees. Don’t take my opinion seriously though, if you enjoy Chanel 5 or Shalimar or the like, you’ll probably find a friend here too. 6/10 because of the nice dry down

I understand why people often compare Amouage Gold to Chanel no.5.
Very feminine, and I mean it, strong. Old fashioned.
I have some kind of allergic reaction to it. Both times I tried it, I had to wash it after 30 minutes, drink water, go get fresh air and take antihistaminiques…
I got the same reaction to Amouage Interlude, only worse.
I happens to me very rarely as I wear perfume pretty much all the time.
I can see this is a quality perfume but it’s not working for me.
I have a sample from Luckyscent if anyone is interested!
I’m sure someone else would enjoy it. Send me a message!

Just got a small bottle of the vintage stuff in a trade and I am OVERKLEMPT!
    Good LAWD!
So, at the beginning of my more recent perfume journey “reboot” starting around 2014, I received a sample of Gold from a kind person. I loved it, but was not in position to buy it. I was also still trying to adjust my nose, figure out what I liked, and having lurked for about a year or so here and on BN, I was eager to begin participating in the discussions. So Gold was placed on the back-burner, and on went my tour of scents.
Just this past week, a friend from the other side of the country whom I have done a lot of blind trades with over the past year or so, sent me a group of pictures from which to choose my next trade – I always enjoy these “shopping” trips with him! He and I both share the same passion for looking up notes and reviews, and taking the plunge – it really is quite fun, and it has been a great way to explore things I might never have had the chance!
Anyway, this little bottle was so obscure, but it was distinctive in the cut – not your basic rectangle – I was getting very excited – what could this be?? He revealed its identity: Amouage Women’s Gold – the “older version” HOLY COW ON A POGO STICK! LOL!
Ladies (and gentlemen who seriously care), this is THE bomb of bombshell fragrances – this is the trumpet that announces your entry to the party, it is your escort with the James Bond tux…it is you, in your best gown, heals, and mink stole with diamond earrings. This is ALL woman – volume turned up and spotlight on. Oh, and did I forget to mention, you are wearing Chanel Red lipstick and nail polish? Yea – its THAT good.

My first ˮdate” with Gold was a very strange one. It was my first meeting niche and what it represent for the world of perfumery. It is hard to explain what I felt, or better smell. Was something with smoke? Well, I put it away and let the time pass. One day, I took it again and answer myself: what did everybody smell? What was so better to receive five stars from Luca Turin? Then I understand. It was wonderful but yet different. On my skin it was not a ˮhuge floralˮ lile Luca Turin said but I could smell incense and I associated it with smoke. When you burn incense you get smoke. It was a smoky perfume surrounded by rose, aldehyde and jasmine. Lovely to smell. I liked it and thought: different does not mean bad. It is an interesting fragrance waiting to be discover. Please do.

I swapped for an Amouage sample set ( thanks goldenfire5!) and fell for this one hard! I kept trying it and could find nothing I didn’t like and everything I loved and was so close to pulling the trigger and buying a discount bottle of this golden Elixer….BUT! I knew it was familiar to me and the more I sniffed I began to recognize this fragrance….to my nose, it is none other than my beloved Rive Gauche edp hiding in a gold bottle rather than it’s well-known blue & silver ‘can’! Now, I won’t argue with the fact that this is a bit smoother, more luxourious (probably the civet) … more like Rive Gauche in it’s original formulation but seeing as I have 6 back-ups of my signature Rive Gauche waiting for me…I must bid adieu to my first Amouage love…it was fun while it lasted!
EDIT: I couldn’t get this off my mind…I went ahead and purchased a bottle, will update after wearing it from a full bottle rather than tiny sample sprays.
EDIT II: My initial opinion stands: At this point in its reformulation, this is very much like Rive Gauche which can be bought much cheaper; this has very little difference for at least double, if not triple, the price.

This is soapy and fresh, a lot like Chanel No. 5. I wish I could afford it but it’s a real investment. A lovely classic fragrance and if you like No. 5 you’ll probably love this.

Sample n. 5 from my sample set. The first Amouage I fell in love with (I sincerely hope there won’t be too many since I tend to buy everything I love).
When I tried Dia and liked it, I already suspected Gold would be more my cup of tea. Gold has the same elegance as Dia, but the civet makes it much warmer and sexier. I personally don’t have any problem wearing it to work, but I see why people think of it as an evening fragrance. It’s a perfume that smells better when the skin is warm, bare and just a little sweaty (as when dancing in a crowded room).
Gold to me is a must have, a weapon of seduction like the perfect dress and the perfect heels.

I sprayed without reading reviews. The fragrance is not
done with me yet, but this is to my nose:
Clinique Aromatics Elixir married to Estee Lauder Knowing. This is the love child between the two.
I love both, and used to wear them both all the time. I’ve moved on since then, so when this hit, I was really surprised. Looking at the notes of “the parents” this really is the progeny. While I enjoy it, it’s not my style now. I will pass on the FB and use my large two samples happily. I do think this is a colder night time scent (avoid during hotter days).

I am soooo disappointed… I had heard and read so many raving reviews about this fragrance that I was sure that I would love it. Was about to buy it at Dubai airport (cheap!)and sprayed it on my hand…a massive disappointment. It’s Caleche! 100%! And after an hour still Caleche. I own Caleche and I sort of like it…when I don’t have it I spray it in the shop…when I have it I don’t wear it. I had expected soooo much more of Gold…nothing special. Overrated in my opinion.

  33. :

    3 out of 5

WARNING! I’ve just received my new bottle and it’s absolutely watered down. Literally no sillage! Applying 7 big sprays and nothing harmful–It’s an AMOUAGE! 5 sprays of the old juice could kill a bull. In fairness, it’s still gorgeous and long lasting as a skin scent, but for such a price I’m far from satisfied. I know it’s hard to believe, anyway, test before buying and you may save your money.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

I can describe it in 2 words: ROSE INCENSE.

  35. :

    5 out of 5

What is classic and classy to some is just old-fashioned and uninteresting to others, and I’m in this second group. Some state it’s retro chique, but it would need some quirk, some slight touch of modernity to be that. To my nose, and on my skin it’s not.
I agree with reviewers who say “mature” fragrance, I’ll be 50 this year and this is way too “old” for me.
I love rose and florals – I don’t get any. I love oriental spices – I don’t get any. Maybe it’s that perfect blend everybody is talking about?! I get aldehydes (not listed?), civet and musk and this combination simply turns into general soap smell on me.
From all the classics it’s been compared to it reminds me of First the most.
This perfume does not excite me, does not comfort me, does not make me feel special or in the mood for something special… I don’t know, maybe I’m just not “queen” enough to wear this. I’ll try couple of more times until I use my sample, but I suspect I’ll ever become one since I don’t wear a perfume to command or rule, or to seek unconditional attention.

    ***
the ingredients are super high quality and that’s easy to tell, it is such a full bodied, complex scent. the projection and the longevity are both fantastic. the smell however reminds a lot of chanel no.5, but an oriental version of it which ends up smelling quite close to a curry infused no.5. however much i appreciate its beauty and complexity – and i do – i find it hard to wear especially in the drydown when the spices really shine through and smells a bit too foody.

  37. :

So beautiful, despite the over the ostentatious bottle. On me it’s all about the warmth and softness. Just so lovely, and so long lasting, clinging to me on a hot, hot day. Just gorgeous.

  38. :

    3 out of 5

Yes, floral aldehydic is what this one’s all about. To my nose Gold has shades of No. 5, and I can’t say I absolutely love either of them. It has good projection and staying power, but it’s not something I’d go nuts for. All in all, a bit ho hum to me. To those who love it, enjoy!

  39. :

    5 out of 5

Gold sparkles. It evokes champagne and long chiffon dresses and opera house foyers. It is warm and rich, with myrrh and incense sitting right at the top. This Amouage doesn’t change much on my skin over time, with only the incense growing more prominent as in a lot of other Amouage scents. It’s the scent I imagine lingering in costumes used in performances of Nabucco.

What a true reflection of the name of a perfume! Gold, indeed, in all its facets–sophisticated, fine and well-rounded. Hints of Chanel N 5 mixed together with Madame Rochas and a slight touch of White Linen that do not overpower the wearer and its ambiance like Lancome Climat (and other similar perfumes with a strong, green aldehyde note), sits nicely on skin and behaves well. The trail is one of the most recognizable among all the perfumes made by French perfumers.

    – vintage original sample, just “Amouage”, in perfect condition:
Amazing. You can immediately tell that everything in it is of the finest quality. Lily of the valley and rose come off the top, then as it warms the civet and ambergris come in – woods, musks, a touch of powder, the resins. The rose oil, for instance, is of the most exquisite fineness, there is no harsh note in the scent or anywhere in the drydown, the whole thing is as smooth as silk. It’s sweet but not aldehydic or cloying: no headaches, no sour notes or spice, but a symphony, with rose and lily of the valley at its heart.
Reading Luca Turin’s review I have to agree with every word, my nose is telling me some serious money must have gone into this. It’s exceptionally good. Cost is a factor in buying a full bottle of – as it’s now marketed – “Amouage Gold” – but I’ve really enjoyed playing in the sandpit of the Gods by wearing it. I’ve tested various quality Middle Eastern scents and also quality rose scents, but this is glorious. If you like rose scents or Middle Eastern musky/woody florals, this is for you… 10/10 🙂

I had never tried Gold before, but one night I had a dream of it and naturally felt I should test it. Aquired my tester. Put it on and the first powdery whiff hit my nose, and I immediately and vividly saw my grandparents in my mind (they passed away years ago). It was a wonderful thing that this perfume did for me, and I like to think they placed it in my dreams for this reason, so I would remember them. Scent truly is the sense that relates the most to memory.
As I inhaled for hours and hours, it continuously reminded me of the same thing. My grandmother was not much of a perfume person, but she kept some in her bedroom dresser, and who knows if she ever wore it? I would always go in her room, dig into her drawer, and smell it, as I loved perfume as long as I can remember.
Memories aside, judging the perfume on its own merit, of all the classic-style perfumes I have ever smelled, Gold reminds me of the newest version of Rive Gauche. It has something sweet in the base that is irresistible, and it is extremely powdery/aldehydic. It is also similar to Chanel N.5 Parfum, but Gold smells more rich, heavier, and more reserved for a special occasion whereas I enjoy wearing N.5 Parfum to bed as well as a night out. Gold is not my favorite from Amouage; I prefer Ubar which is in the same category. But Gold is on my radar.
(I now own this, and it is incredible how it can smell so old-fashioned yet modern at the exact same time. Wonderful job by Amouage!)

  45. :

Gold Woman is a fancy-pants fragrance, but it’s finished and perfected to the point of being a bit unnerving.
Essentially it’s a huge, romantic, classic-style chypre that wears its influences on its sleeve. Yet, it ventures away from the expected materials (amber, moss, bergamot), relying instead on a balsamic myrrh note that’s merged with orris to produce an almost powdery-rich earthy effect. The florals are restrained when compared with other Amouage feminines, but they’re still playing a key role—especially the jasmine, which stands out the most. There’s a soapyness to it, but it’s kept in balance; musks exist, but they’re friendly.
This is about as retro as it gets, but it’s brilliantly articulated from top to bottom. Soft, textural, alluring—it out-Chanel’s Chanel. Overall, a very good perfume that could easily be worn by either gender, but it’s too precious—polished to a fault in that it reads like a blueprint for chypres. Something to set it off wouldn’t have gone amiss, but it’s still a touchstone that’s impressively rendered given that the usual chypre materials were substituted with alternates.

Gold has an amazing rich spicy opening that I really enjoyed. The fragrance is welled mixed and the dry down is strong and sophisticated but perhaps a bit to mature for me. I am normally not a fan of rose but I did like this fragrance.

  47. :

    3 out of 5

Gold opens like big, classic mix of Chanel #5 and Caleche and ends up to be more brighter, refined version of Caleche.
This is very feminine, rich, mature creation. It starts little heavy but dries down to be warm, soft and silky.
I find the name “Gold” to be very appropriate for this fine mix. It is truly precious, shiny and I even see color yellow smelling it.
I adore Caleche but Gold is indeed a much superior creation.

  48. :

    4 out of 5

Definitely a luxurious perfume! Amouage Gold has a sumptuousness that had me compulsively sniffing for hours. You can tell that there are many, many ingredients incorporated into this creation because each adds a layer of complexity. There is an underlying accord that is exotic – probably the frankincense, myrrh and sandalwood. It is so opulent, I think it is more of a special occasion scent. Due to the aldehydes, I can understand the comparisons with Chanel No.5. But where I respect and have studied the latter, I want to wear this. There is a sheer aristocratic feel to this scent. The sillage was a little over arms length, and it lasted all night on my skin. Even the late stages of the dry down were satiny smooth and gorgeous. Extraordinary fragrance . . . a perfume I would wear out on a winter night as the “piece de resistance” for an elegant ensemble.

  49. :

Wow-this makes me feel like a grown-up. OK, I’m 47, I should be grown up by now but this is a beautiful mature womanly fragrance. This is sensual and exotic, Marlene Dietrich in her prime. I agree there is a very striking initial resemblance to Chanel no. 5, but it doesn’t last long and changes to a slightly spicy, slightly smoky, slightly sweet smooth honey. This refined note doesn’t quite hide the sensuality of the animal underneath though, its like passion waiting to be expressed, all the intrigue of a secret romance culminating in a night to remember. There is a hint of Mitsouko in there towards the end, a sort of darker melancholy as the powder fades. Its warm and beautiful. Longevity is not great on me, but I admit to spending several hours with my nose stuck to my wrist and probably hoovered up all the molecules very quickly….

  52. :

    4 out of 5

Amouage Gold is simply exquisite and sublime. It is one of the most amazing perfumes I came across over the years. It is sophisticated and feminine. If you go easy with it, you can wear it during the day as well. If applied gently, it is floral and powdery. Do not splash from the top to toe. 🙂

  53. :

    5 out of 5

    Hm. This is hard.
Upon first contact, Gold Woman smells very much like Chanel No. 5. Not the aldehydes, the rose, that stunning, Grasse rose. I tried them both at the same time on my second run-through, and they were almost identical.
But they diverge. Gold goes on to smell like rose and honey. I don’t get anything even slightly like civet, nothing raunchy at all, and I confess myself disappointed. The next note for me is jasmine, and the drydown is nothing so much as a reasonably pleasant soapy rose.
In my opinion this smells nothing like Caleche. Caleche opens with aldehydes and iris, green and then a touch of honey, hay and something watery-pale. Into the drydown it smells of amber.
The perfume Gold Woman most resembles is Joy. While Joy is pretty straight-up jasmine backed by rose, its depth and quality are what make it remind me of Gold. You can smell the care and the money in both.
There are pefumes you’re bound to respect without ever loving them. I don’t love Gold. It was worth the price of the sample, but I would never buy a bottle.

Amouage Gold reminded me directly of Chanel No. 5 pure Perfume and in the dry down of Lanvin´s Arpege. If you are lover of Chan. No.5 and Arpege, this is a MUST for you, because it is a really big improvement of both. Smells rich on the clothing until the next next days. Incredible high, rich quality of a perfume. Opulent scent for evening. Not unisex, women only.

Ah, so we are getting into the Gold versus Caleche thing are we ?
Well, Guy Robert composed both , Caleche way back in ’61 and gold in ’84 and I love and wear both , sometimes at the same time.
Gold is what Caleche may have been with the benefit of an unlimited budget and another 23 years on Guy’s clock – you can see that he spent his life working up to creating Gold . Both dry down in a soapy way which , I actually love , its like really refined Dove soap . (Luca Turin has always stated that if Dove made an EDP – it would sell very well !)
Caleche pure perfume is perhaps nearer to Gold than the eau Soir but Gold doesn’t have the same aldehydic burst at the beginning .
Gold is unctuous , it is mellifluous , its is honeyed and rosy and warm and I don’t actually think its “powerful” personally , to me, Caleche is , at the front end at least, 20 times more obvious .I don’t think Gold has the projection of Caleche – it plays a close hand . The ingredients are all the purist possible but reformulation in 1998 will have taken out some of the natural ingredients – because thats what happened – better to have synthetic cheap molecules that have been allergy tested than expensive natural ingredients that one person in a million may develop a rash if exposed to eh ? ( Its not my ideal , thats for sure ) .
Gold is now £220 for 100ml , Caleche is £110 for the same – good perfume is not cheap these days . (15ml of pure Caleche is £140 – and its nothing like the EDP – thats for another review though.)
I couldn’t afford to buy either of these scents until I was in my late 40’s – maybe thats why younger people don’t “get” Gold, because they know that its expensive and they will probably be older before they can afford it at which point, you, like me perhaps , will grow into it by virtue of age and pocket .I never allowed myself to fall in love with anything that I could not afford – Gold fell into this category .
In my 20’s, I had the choice of all the “old” scents like original Chanel 5, Shalimar, Caleche but I didn’t want them – I wanted , initially , the things my friends wore – Rive Gauche then onto Opium, Obsession ,Poison, Ysatis etc. my concession to “classic” being L’Interdit III and Jardins de Bagatelle which I didn’t stick with – also, the last thing I would have been able to afford was a months wages on one scent so our paths didn’t cross until I could actually afford it .
In my late 30’s , I strayed into the realms of Samsara, Ghost , Gucci Rush , Tresor , Angel , Safari, Boucheron, Diorella , Diorama , Mitsouko and some of the Serge Lutens . It was a scent fest – I was a scent tart !
In my 40’s I delved into L’Heure Bleue , Chamade, and Shalimar and a lot of the darker Carons like En Avion, Tabac Blond and Poivre – I loved them , they felt more modern than new scents and I thought I was spending a lot of money. I tried and loved Chanel 5 and other Chanels , they all hated me – for my pains .
In my 50’s I am going for quality and finally, luxury with a wardrobe of Amouage scents , my favourites being Gold, Lyric and Jubilation XXV.
I have also discovered Habanita, Calypso ( for pure 1920’s fun) and finally, Madame Rochas to see what it was like for my Mum who could never afford it .
And now with knowledge available, I find time and time again that I go back to Guy Robert because I feel perfumers signatures .
Gold was the pinnacle of his career – like being able to build an Rolls Royce after working at Ferrari – both were good jobs , both built excellent cars but one gave you unlimited funds to do the job.
Guy said ” above all , a scent must smell good”.
Well, both Caleche and Gold smell wonderful – I’m not going to choose because at my age, I can have more than one car in the garage – its the only side benefit of being older IMO.
BTW – I am not getting civet on any level .

I cannot imagine a better perfume than Gold. It’s the most beautiful one.
