Description

Amethyst: (Birthstone for February) As Sage’s new interpretation of the ethereally beautiful purple stone, this blend begins with a top note of calming French lavender in honor of the gem’s legendary ability to promote a spirit of peacefulness. The fragrance’s middle note of wild African violet and spicy lilac is lush and beguiling, and rests on a warm, meditative base note of sandalwood and musk that is accented with vanilla. A sheerer exploration of the original Amethyst scent, this fragrance is as elementally delightful as a lavender tea cookie – wear it whenever you want to enchant or be enchanted by its delicate, alluring beauty.

The smell of purple Spring days…heady, anticipation of summer, innocence…what a beautiful violet-centered fragrance. The violet melts into a very true lilac…and each note smells natural and real. This new version of Amethyst has a definite, soothing lavender note throughout, and some vanilla peeks through. Sage Machado’s description of this as a “lavender tea cookie” is right on the money. Amazing!

Sage Machado Amethyst perfume oil offers an interesting combination of purple flowers: violet, lilac, and lavender! Upon application, the violet was quite obvious. In a note to myself about this creation some time ago, I wrote: “doughy violet”! There is indeed a huge amount of overlap with Borsari Violetta di Parma and Berdoues Violettes de Toulouse and Molinard Violette–the classic and traditional (and created long, long ago…) violet soliflores–but the lilac adds a slightly soapy twist, serving to moderate the sweetness a bit.
I cannot say that I would ever have guessed the lavender–I was wondering whether iris might be implicated. In any case, Amethyst is definitely unique. Only violet lovers need apply though, as this is more about violet than anything else.

This tiny lovely sample has really won my heart over the course of a few days. The oil is a crescendo of a scent, upon initial application is very light, and seems to get stronger with time. The fragrance is so soft, powdery, and addicting…very purple, violets and lilacs, I don’t get to much lavender. A very musky violet, sweetened by vanilla. Sandalwood gives it a woody, vintage-y vibe. I was told there is orris in the base also, which I believe, because it is very powdery and like face powder. It is almost like face powder that has been stored for years in an antique wooden keepsake box. Very lovely.
This really smells like all of the wonderful things found on a vintage vanity…powder puffs, old makeup, lipstick, ancient love letters tucked in an old cedar keepsake box. I only wish it was available in the deco style EDT spray. Adorable. I must have it.
Edit: Oh my! There is gardenia in here as well…it comes quiet strongly later on, but everything is all so seamlessly blended. no sharp edges, just a lovely blend of florals…
