I bought a small bottle, because it sounded good. When I put it on, there was an immediate sharp smell that I DID not like. Anyone know what that might have been, so I can avoid it in my future searching?

Fragrance Review For The New Ambush Dana
Top Notes Kiwi, lavender, papaya, sage, bergamot lemon
Middle Notes Passion Fruit carnation, rose geranium
Base Notes sandalwood, tonka bean, vanilla, heliotrope praline
Ok so this is not the original classic Dana. I’m not a perfume snob anymore and can enjoy all kinds of fragrances even the reformulations of vintage classics. That being said I still do prefer the original Ambush Dana. It has such a beautiful heliotrope. It was a spring time floral scent with a lovely 1960’s hippie flower child gorgeousness that I really got into. This is a modern updated Dana and it’s a fruity floral gourmand. The opening has fruit scents: kiwi, a delicious kiwi that was created in a lab as a synthetic but very true-to-real-kiwi scent and papaya. Love the papaya. However it smelled like fruit shampoo with kiwi and papaya smell. That’s not bad but I dislike when I keep buying fragrances that end up smelling like shampoo. The passion fruit I believe is responsible. This is a fruit shampoo scent. You know when you open the lid to your shampoo bottle and you smell it? That’s what this frag smells like as it opens. Then it does tend to turn into a rose perfume with a sweet powder. It’s rose powder. The geranium is also very detectable. This time around I could not smell the heliotrope. It is there in the form of fleeting powder but it’s mostly rose powder. The dry down was the more interesting part of this perfume. It’s got a praline very gourmand a la La Vie est Belle Lancome and Love by Sofia Vergara. Praline and vanilla, plenty of vanilla. Very much a gourmand fragrance there is very little of the sandalwood I had hoped to find. It’s very nice, delicious fruit, soft flowers and vanilla and praline. It has a full body however and can last all day. Very nice. I would recommend this to you if you like fruity floral gourmands. If you liked La Vie Est Belle La Nuit Tresor and Love Sofia Vergara, check this out.

This is such a sweet and beautiful smelling fragrance. It’s got some notes I would never have imagined they could turn into perfume: papaya, kiwi, praline. It’s fruity gourmand but it’s also got some very strong floral scents of rose and lavender. It opens with citrus and ends with vanilla. I have nothing but love for this perfume. I also think it’s easily unisex because it’s got the citric opening and some aromatic notes found in men’s colognes like sage and lavender. The flowers are not all that heavy and the fragrance is subtle and sweet. Very perfumy. It’s supposed to be a reformulation of the original Ambush which has less notes and is almost a linear fragrance of lavender. This is beautiful. Loved it.

Canoe Cologne is the original Ambush from the late ’70s – early ’80s. It’s how my mother smelled when I was very small. My father recognized it on a male co-worker around the year 2000 and asked for it for Christmas. When I sprayed a sample of it in the department store that year, I was ripped back in time to 1980. I was giving my mother a kiss goodbye as she left for work…and I was smelling Ambush.

I ordered Ambush blind. With all the different reviews I got curious…To my disappointment the huge bottle came without a spray. So I ordered very cheap atomisers on eBay and filled one up. Now I can spray to my hearts content. I really like this. Normally I am not a friend of overly fruity perfumes or anything with melon in it, but Ambush is different. It is not sweet and (although not listed) I can smell melon. Ambush works for me really well in Summer (in the subtropical climate I live in – lots of humidity) but not in Winter. When the temperature drops it becomes a bit harsh, strong and unpleasant actually. Winter is nearing its end and I am looking forward to get ambushed again…

Chocolatey, spicy, like Chanel Chance,Coco Mademoiselle mixed with Vera Wang Princess. Maybe a little like Angel too.
Found this at the 99c store.

I used to wear this & Tabu a lot back when I was young. I haven’t worn it since then but I will definitely test this one. I hate to hear it is so fruity now…

This is a dirty, sexy, fabulously fruity floral. On my skin it is AWESOME!! EDT from bug splash bottle.
I feel like a slattern when I wear this delicious juice and it is interesting because it gets peoples attention in an animal way. HAH! I love it

I remember this in the pink cap vintage version. I cannot find it anywhere now, but I loved this back in the 90’s. It was a bit like Blue Jeans from the 70’s, (to me at least) … something about it is very similar. Loved Tabu too but this was my favorite.

When I was in high school in the 60’s, there were two Big Ones in the world of perfume: Tabu, and Ambush. Tabu, the spice bomb, swirled about in the air in direct conflict with Ambush. I favored Tabu, unfortunately Ambush smelled exactly like bug spray on me. I didn’t know it was still around, but it’s unfortunate the non-stop fruit train in the world of scent has derailed this classic fragrance.

Yesterday I saw my bottle again (I really forget what I have sometimes!) and thought, that’s right! Let’s try it again! And I really loved it!!!!
It is quite great for a cheapie! It is gourmand to my nose, the praline comes very quickly! So this version Ambush is quite modern! GREAT price too!
Lovely

Awful! Not the original fragrance at all. This reformulation is yet another strong, stinky, they all smell alike celebrity type scent. The only distinguishing thing about it is the overwhelming fruitiness of it.
danbdan – :
Completely surprised by this! Although I’m sure at some point years ago when this was so popular I must have picked up a bottle, sniffed, and passed it up. So, I do not remember what the original Ambush was like. I am quite sure that this reformulation is much different than the original. This current Ambush is right in line with the other current popular fragrances that have the sweet note in them. In fact when I had my young daughter blind-sniff this she guessed it to be Hillary Duff’s With Love. I find this to be quite enjoyable. Ambush has a nice warm, rich sweetness that doesn’t make me feel like I placed a cupcake under my nose, or candied nuts either. I recommend giving this a try. For the price you really can’t go wrong!

Wow! What a difference a few decades make. I remember Ambush from the 1960s. It definitely had sweetness, but it was balanced by herbal and woody notes.
What’s with all this frickin’ fruit? Kiwi and papaya were not in the original. Patooey!
Then again, i read young people on these boards complaining how classic scents smell “like an old lady”. Those classics are without the sugary sweetness, excess of vanilla, and heaps of fruity toppings of so many perfumes of the past decade or 15 years.
I am SOOOOO tired of perfumes, and the women who wear them, smelling like spoiled desserts. I eagerly await the time when the fashion for strongly fruity, excessively vanilla’d, and painfully sweet perfumes dissipates.
And i think it’s tragic that deep complex perfumes are reformulated to smell more like “celebrity” fragrances that will probably not survive the time in the spotlight of their namesakes.

As anyone my age can tell you this is a reformulated version of the original Ambush and is a modern, a very modern but prosaic fruity floral. It has a citrusy opening, a floral heart and puh-lenty of vanilla and sandalwood in the base. It is an ok scent but rather pedestrian. I didn’t buy it, because I remembered the original scent, a scent that was favored by about a third of the girls I grew up with.
The original scent started with angelica and basil, kept the floral heart but added augmented it with mignonette, ylang and lavender. The finish was free of vanilla and focused on the sandal, tonka and a very liberal amount of musk. It was considered sexy and was very date night popular. It was a recognizeable icon of its day.
The current version should be scrapped, we could do with way more musky florals and less papaya.
