I couldn’t find any reviews of this scent, so I bought it blind based on the notes and Puig’s reputation for affordable quality.
First off, Agua Brava Azul is not a flanker to Agua Brava, and I didn’t expect it to be. Puig have simply taken a name and a bottle design that have worked for decades, and updated them for an entirely new scent.
I would classify this scent as an aromatic aquatic, rather than a citrus aromatic. While there is a strong citrus opening, the heart is textbook aquatic with a woody base.
Azul comes in a gorgeous deep blue translucent flacon, with a surprisingly nice, hefty wood-grain plastic cap. The glass is solid and the sprayer is excellent.
The scent opens with a familiar initial blast – it’s a blend of citrus and sharp notes that draws inspiration from Puig’s classic ’90s aquatic scent, Aqua Quorom. But whereas Aqua Quorom’s opening is all about grapefruit and lavender, Azul gets its citrus from lemon and its sharp notes from sage and pink peppercorns. The notes are somewhat reminiscent of Bleu de Chanel, but the overall effect is bracing and spicy, rather than Bleu’s warmth and smoothness.
The heart is where this scent starts to get disappointing. As the top notes fade, within 10-15 minutes, the scent becomes dominated by generic sea notes. Yes, it is refreshingly salty, but it’s also slightly sour, and there isn’t enough spice to round everything out.
Just as the top notes are gone too soon, the base notes take forever to make themselves felt – about two hours in. It’s a pity, because the base is a lovely warm blend of amber and sandalwood. I don’t get any vetiver, and whoever put tobacco into the note pyramid was dreaming.
Despite those disappointments, there is a brief period at the start of the dry down where it all comes together beautifully as a warm yet fresh blend of amber, sea notes and woods. Alas, by then, Azul is all but a skin scent.
Longevity is average. The ingredients are quality, but Azul is a modern fresh scent – a format that almost always trades off staying power for inoffensive cleanness. Projection is all but non-existent. Perhaps Azul’s performance will improve in warmer weather – I have only tested it in autumn.
Overall, Azul is a fresh but ultimately uninspiring modern aquatic. Those accustomed to Puig’s huge, green classics – or even Azul’s excellent aquatic forebear, Aqua Quorom – will likely be disappointed. However, those looking for a less ubiquitous alternative to the likes of Nautica Voyage may find Azul to be a better scent, with higher quality ingredients, all for roughly the same price. I paid US$18 for 100ml, which is exceptional value compared with many similar scents out there. I’ll happily wear this, but unlike Bvlgari Aqva – the only truly great aquatic, in my estimation – I won’t buy another flacon once my bottle runs out.
