This is my first foray into Memo perfumes and it’s apparent that everything I’ve sampled comes from quality ingredients. My second time wearing African Leather and I have just now ordered a larger decant.
It’s starts off with a lot of masculine gusto: spicy cardamon and saffron with a citrus twist. The first hour Africn Leather is very strong, but it’s the drydown that I love. The oud is not too animatic or medicinal, and feels like quality. I detect it but it doesn’t overwhelm the other notes. I’m not a big leather fan so not being able to pick it up after the opening works for me.
I sprayed 3 times and I get about 3.5-4 hours before it’s a skin scent, projection is only during the first hour. I don’t like the idea of paying retail for this scent, but if I can find it under $150 I would consider it. For now I’m happy with my decant as there are others I love more from Memo (reviews to follow).

You might as well buy Tiger balm, it actually smells better. The only advice I can give you is to not blind buy this, try it.

Another one of those hyped fragrances.
I tried it multiple times and it is absolutely not unique.
And with this price tag, you are surely wasting your money away.

    My first impression? Love.
It was spicy, elegantly leathery, and somewhat green. Attractive, quite sexy and unique.
Nevertheless, 15 minutes in, I found a mosquito repellant-ish vibe in it, and what a turnoff! I tried to love it again a couple of days later, but that particular smell had gotten stuck in my head.
I’m pretty sure there’s some citronellol or geraniol in there providing this bug spray smell, which is a big shame, because otherwise this could have been a home run from Memo as far as I’m concerned.

Sundried leather mixed with spices and the sunset over the African savanne.
To me this is like sticking my nose into my spice cabinet on a very hot day. There are not only spices and the leather, it’s a whirl of spices that dries out the air in the room. Very interesting scent and unique at the same time.

I was on the fence with this one at first but omg did it grow on me. I’ve received countless compliments wearing this. One from a celebrity who leaned in & whispered in my ear, “omg you smell amazing. May I ask what are you wearing?” That sealed the damn deal with me right there! I’m in love! Lol. Another, I was walking by a car & the guy sitting in the passenger seat commented on my fragrance. Unbelievable he could even smell it… Anyway, compliment bomb! No way I could even describe this scent if I tried. GET YOUR NOSE ON THIS ONE ASAP! But give it a few wearings before you judge. This is a very special scent that will forever be in my collection. Lasts forever too!!

About 9 on the stonkingness Richter scale. I would say, notewise, that this is chiefly cardamom, followed by oud and vetiver.
Ah! There’s cumin as well, is there? Yes, that fits.
    @parham.darestan
I think that’s true of all fragrances, really – the bit about letting it come to you.

A masculine, deep, sexy and refined leather.
You get something very high quality, unique and well composed.
I smell pepper, tonka,a refined suede like leather, and a little bit of resin.
To my nose this smells like it has the dna of and could fit in the Tom Ford private collection nicely.
This has fair projection and lasts 7 or so hours on me, but sillage is quite good.
Great stuff, but I would be tempted to buy a bottle of TF Tuscan leather instead
I am not into layering, but this layered with Timbuktu or Byredo Bal D’Afrique would be glorious

Not a bad frag at all but not what I was expecting with the word “leather” in it’s title. Should’ve been called “African Cardamom Bomb!” I do get hints of saffron, cumin, geranium & patchouli. But the mixture of oud, leather, vetiver and musk is what saves this fragrance. The projection & sillage is strong and at this price it should be.

It smells good. Not the price that they are asking good though. It’s actually an insulting price for something that is not groundbreaking in anyway.
Edit: I’ve been wearing the sample and really falling in love with this but…. Still not worth the price

Terre d’Hermes, a traveler from the west, and L’air du Desert Marocain, a native daughter of the desert, had a brief but passionate love affair under the full moon of the African Savannah. 9 months later, African Leather was born. The first of a new generation carrying both the refinement of the West, and the rugged heart of Africa, who always keeps a small sack of rich and exotic spices in his leather travel bag, to remind him of his homeland whence his soul will eventually return.

If you smell it directly, It is not that special. But, If you wear it and let the scent come to you, this is fantastic. You can detect the scent for 6 hours after spray without even trying. It is unique and luxurious but too expensive.

  13. :

African Leather is sweet leather accord with added spices to give it an exotic flare. This is cardamom overload, it punches you in the face right at the opening and carries on through the duration of this fragrances rather impressive half-life. After about the 10 minute mark the spices – oddly enough – actually start to reveal themselves even more. Even to the point where they give the composition a menthol like effect.
Theres a lot to take in here at first, which I could see scaring some people off, not for the faint of nose.
Does the name suit the fragrance? IMO yes. You do get a very rich exotic leather mostly in the dry down.
Is this going to be a safe leather for everyone? Probably not, theres quite a bit going on here. If your not into spice overload (cardamom, cumin etc) you might want to look else wear for a more crowd pleasing leather. Tuscan Leather, Bottega Vaneta..
I get about 8 hours on skin with this one its pretty tough.
I would say this is a unisex fragrance with a slight lean towards masculine. Also, my favourite from the leather collection of Memo.

This is a brilliantly different take on Leather as a note which is easy to like and very enjoyable to wear.
A small sample gifted me by a friend quickly transformed my leather-skepticism into healthy enthusiasm for the Cuirs Nomades collection. Notewise, do not be fooled by the name – African Leather is a tame (maybe even polite) spiced suede scent; and THAT in my humble opinion is where the magic is. I have often found many leather-centered scents to be too unoriginal and lacking in sufficient development but African Leather does a very good job of this – starting out with a strong spicy-leathery opening which transforms into a buttery suede heart and finally ends with a well-behaved musky-woody base with hints of very soft leather. As others have noted, this is more akin to the inside of a (horrendously) expensive handbag than say, a rugged leather jacket.
longevity and projection are stellar and it works well in cold weather/cool temperatures. So far, the only thing not to love about AL is the price. But hey, it is what it is – I have no doubt that the quality you get is worth every penny.
I also tried Irish Leather. To me, it was a more obviously leather heavy scent (a la Tuscan leather) and the tonka note there is very well done. It only seems to get boring after a while whereas AL has a better development to it. For this reason, AL gets a LOVE and IL a solid LIKE.

Very strong and long lasting. Starts off as a warm, spicey, and smokey leather and dries down to become something like Tom Ford’s Vert d’Encens

  16. :

    5 out of 5

Beautifully put together, couture leather smelling absolutely nothing like Africa or anything African. Still stunningly good, just not at all as billed. The only thing wild or savage about this is the price. On the nose it’s hugely classy and finely balanced, with an amazing modulation from very zingy citrus indeed on the open, then cycling through sweet spice, to a luxurious, buttery soft, almost powdery fine leather beneath. Not even remotely wild or dark or untamed – it’s like an unbelievably expensive Fendi jacket, not a rawhide whip leather from the bush. It has the odd tinge of manly man to it – very much on the more butch end of unisex- but the sweet and well mannered mix makes it still wearable for women. Much, much more assertive when worn in warm weather, and might get overbearing if sprayed heavily or in a small space. For me a little light, overall, to be my dream leather – I’d go for darker spices and no citrus- but really very very special indeed.

Sincerely, this collection of leather and travel from Memo has been a great disappointment. I see concepts used merely as a pretext for mediocre perfumes. Apparently what they wanted was what Louis Vuitton managed to achieve better in their exclusive collection, which is to use the leather scent as background for something inspired by travel. In the case of Memo, for the time being travel has been shown more journey in to the world of nonsense than anything else.
At first, African Leather even seems to have a stronger link with leather scent than French Leather and Russian Leather, but this impression is not confirmed in evolution. Another thing I do not know is what this perfume has to do with Africa or with Savannah landscape in the advertising . In my opinion: nothing.
To my surprise, African Leather reveals itself as a scent of patchouli, rose and amber basically, something very similar to the discontinued Dior Midnight Poison. In the opening is that there is the difference, with more spices ranging from the freshest aroma of cardamom to the more animalic of cumin, which is used very lightly here. Generally speaking, it is another average perfume married to a nonsense concept in an expensive collection with airs of exclusivity.

Smells like one of those amouages. Strong oppenning than goes flowery. Not bad. Nothing special or groundbreaking … i thought like this in the beginning but now .. i reaally love the drydown.

Simply stunning. I have had this for a few weeks and really have fallen in love with it after initially not being so sure. I am obsessed now! This opens very spicy, cumin, cardamom and saffron with a bit of leather – yes – they are all there. It is very heavy to begin with but after 10-20 mins the spices soften, we get the leather come through a bit more and there is a sweet note that I can’t describe. As the spice fades I find this to be more slightly more sweet than spicy – so I find this to be a sweet, spicy leather scent.
The leather is very obvious, but it is done very differently to Tuscan leather, so I can see how some may think the leather takes a back seat to other notes – but I think it is there from the start although it does pick up steam.
I really do love this – much more versatile than Tuscan Leather, for me – also more enjoyable – although I do like TL.
A cool – cold weather scent – and a fantastic one. I got this for less than half price (£80) and I am kicking myself for not buying two! It took a few wears to feel this way, but now – this is one I will wear for the rest of my life.
The price of this is painful, luckily there is a good clone out there in ‘Cuir De Africano’ by Dua which, after a horrendous opening does get the middle and base right. After 45mins the casual passer by would not know the difference. Sadly I think that has been discontinued!
I did get a free decant of this from Suleiman on Ebay (from Azerbaijan) – this was awful. A clear fake. Stay away! Wish I could leave feedback to warn others.
I would recommend people try this before buying, but even then – you may need a few goes with this as I found out. I actually got this at the same time as Black Afgano – which I initially hated – but am now also completely obsessed with that one too!
Performance – not the beast many say it is, but this is not weak juice either. Will give me around 3-4 hours of ‘good’ wear on my skin. Lasts well on clothes – 24hrs later it still smells the same. After the opening sillage is moderate. Not a bad performer at all.
In summary – if you can afford this – buy it!

I like this, in the initial few hours it’s very strong. You wouldn’t want to wear this in an enclosed space, it can be cloying.
This does remind me a lot to L’air du Desert Marocain, both very spicy and rich. This is more boozy and animalic. The only issue with this is the price. Its too expensive, it’s good but not that good. I rather stick with L’air du Desert Marocain for less than half the price.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

I don’t usually refute other reviews, but if this doesn’t last more than an hour on your skin, you got a fake or bad sample/decant. This is an 8 hour scent easily. It stays on clothes for days.
Also – it is a masterpiece beyond words… a must try for anyone who likes novel leathery scents with magical opening notes.

  27. :

This juice smells amazing: a soft sweet leather. it is not harsh at all, like some other leather niche scents out there. Unfortunately it does not last more than an hour on my skin, or my sample is a dud. If this lack of power is real, I would not pay even a forth of the asking retail price.

  28. :

    5 out of 5

Warm spicy with a touch of soft leather. This one was love at first sniff for me. I haven’t tried any of the other from the leather series by Memo Paris but this one is a definite masterpiece. Longevity is out of this world.

  29. :

    4 out of 5

I rarely get floored by a scent but this one made me go “whoa, I love this” the first time I smelled it.
It’s spicy, complex, dense, a bit synthetic. Leather plays a role but it’s not a leather jacket/Tuscan Leather type. More of a soft saddle leather or maybe a baseball mitt? I love cardamom and saffron so that likely plays into my love of African Leather.
Longevity was strong on my skin (6-8 hours) and projection was above average.
Good for cooler weather. Great for a date. Manly!
A 9.0/10 for me. The pricing is insane (almost $300 now for 75ml) and it’s never at discounters. Worth seeking a decant or smelling at Neiman Marcus or Saks or wherever else this is carried retail.

After the leathery rose of French Leather, the aromatic leather of Irish Leather and the raw greenness of Italian Leather, Memo created the fourth chapter of its collection Cuirs Nomades. Destination Africa!
Don’t be fooled by the exotic name because this scent is more an urban safari than a wild real African safari.
If you were expecting a wild animal leather as suggested by the pretty panther lying on the bottle, you may be disappointed.
African Leather is still a nice spicy woody, which without being a real leather diffuses a clean and airy suede.
Geranium associated with cardamom, saffron and cumin, is at the top a curious cocktail with metallic notes, both soapy and a little spicy.
Then, a smooth vetiver accompanied by this light leather and patchouli compose the base of this polished composition.
African Leather is a luxury safari in the savannah, well hidden in a Jeep with tinted windows, white leather seats and fur cushions, to admire the big cats without fear of danger.
A beautiful scent but nothing ground breaking.
Will I buy another bottle of this juice? No because I expect better performance and a fragrance with real temper for such a price.

This is one of my favorites EVER! Very similar to Parfums d’ Empire Cuir Ottoman and Tauer 02 but so much better. Like all the other Memo scents it’s the highest quality juice I’ve ever smelled. The blend is perfect…leather animal perfection, but you can wear it any time without overwhelming everyone around you. Surprising leather that can easily be worn on a summer day. LOVE THIS!

Wow ya’ll, this potion is strong.
I sampled it on my arm before going to bed and waking up and going through my morning routine onward to lunch nearly 12 hours later and I can still smell it radiating off my skin. It’s not a skinscent even after all this time. That’s some power.
I’m not really going to say this is a full-on leather scent though. The first few hours are a spicy cardamom and citrus-filed experience. The later hours are saffron, sweetness, spices, and sure, I guess leather is there. I wouldn’t ever describe this as a leather-centered fragrance.
It’s a bit unusual. Juicy. Spicy. I love it.

This is a deep and personal Leather. It feels like it belongs on your skin, like it’s a part of who you are. It’s a truly well made, beautiful scent. Do yourself a favor and get to know African Leather for yourself. Don’t worry about my review or anyone else’s reviews, just experience this gem on your skin and see how it makes you feel.

It has a rich body, a deep scent similar to arabic philosophy. To be more specific, it reminds me the WIDIAN house as for the thickness and the feeling. A true arabic scent in my opinion.. not so african though!
The main players, cardamom, leather and saffron, are vivid and velvety deep. There are wonderful spices in the composition which bonds really nicely making a classy scent. The oud is very discreet. You must have rich imagination to find it!
This scent is suitable for winter but I think it feels better in fall. Day or night doesn’t matter. And it can be worn by women in my opinion.
The projection for the first 30-40 minutes is quite heavy. But after that becomes a moderate one. The longevity is not at it’s high though. Above the average but still a moderate scent. I made a test side by side on my hands with Amouage Honour. I could smell traces of the Honour the next day. I lost African leather after 5 hours or so. I like it very-very much but I think it’s price doesn’t justify a buy. Moreover, it’s not a unique smell, I’m sure I’ve smelt similar luxurious scent in past but I can’t remember which. If I find it around 90-100 usd, I’ll grab it with closed eyes! So nice!

  36. :

A beautiful Spicy, Sweet and Leathery balanced scent that turns into incense later on.
Even though this perfume is unisex, I find it more masculine and winter scent.

I had gotten a sample spray tester and after wearing this out I feel like the leopard on the bottle out on the prowl looking for my mate grrrrrrrr. Lol
The smell is an awesome recipe. It has all the manly scents but a nice touch of citrus to cut down it from being too pungent. Females who find leather and spice flavors too offensive usually can deal with this thanks to the citrus. Wearing this makes me feel sophisticated, unique and has a descent sillage for 3 sprays. I would def invest in the bottle even if it’s $280

  38. :

    3 out of 5

Like the big cat on the bottle, this is a lithe, elegant “beast”. I only have a small sample from Luckyscent, but this seems to have it all: power, grace, stamina, complexity … and impeccable construction. A suave leather that gives an immediate high!
African Leather is a perfume to make you believe in perfume again. Exceptional.
To the reviewer below me: you could possibly learn to love the bottle, given what it yields! To my eye it’s an attractive design – tall, sleek and distinctive. And there’s something about the art nouveau/deco sensibility in its look that evokes a lost world of romantic travel …

  39. :

I really would love to bite the bullet and blind buy, however – that bottles is just hideous! Of course that is not what we are after, but look at Dior homme line from Dior, those bottles exude class and style!

  40. :

Lovely slight leather and oud, bergamot and vetiver which suppose to capture some of the African animals scent. As a female, I really like this scent because it is very pleasant on me and last all day and thru the evening hours. Fall/winter day and night and unisex.

  41. :

    3 out of 5

I am a BIG fan of tradition masculine scents, such as Leather, and based on the glowing reviews, I figured that this one would be right up my alley.
The initial spray is a very light fresh scent, which is not what I was expecting. I had to double check the sample to make sure I sprayed the right one. African Leather opens with a clean, fresh and citrus scent. Reminiscent of Chanel Allure Pour Homme. About an hour in some of the leather begins to emerge. A soft leather, not a harsh leather, so if you do not like leather, you may enjoy this. If you are looking for heavy leather, this is not the one for you.
AL is a very well balanced, well blended and refined scent. In this regard., it reminds me of Amouage Jubilation XXV, classy and elegant.
With the name, the story and the pictures, I was expecting a refined animalistic scent. This one is not animalistic at all. The Oud does add a little “stink” in the dry down, which gives AL a little bit of a jungle feel.
Overall this is a good scent, but I will not add a bottle at this price point.
Bottom line: Understanding that this is not an animialistic scent or a heavy leather scent, but it is a good scent and worth trying a sample of.

One of the best releases of the year, and the best of it’s line.
Very beautiful and well blended fragrance: Opening is creamy citrus and warm spices, the rest is very light flowers/ saffron /leather/ Woody (oud) vibes all the way. (cumin and cardamom have no franc presence here) all to lead to an amazing dry down.
Good projection, lasts for the whole day. I got masculin compliments.
So classy and elegant, no sharp dirty notes within. you can wear it in all times.
Official price is 190 euros for 75 ml (not so excessive for a niche perfume).
    9/10 scent.
    Double thumbs up

  43. :

Scent – saffron, vetiver patchouli & leather.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the colder months, day or night.
    Projection – I didn’t get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 12hrs consistently.

  44. :

    5 out of 5

MEMO African Leather is the first offering of the house I’ve tried, and it’s a very agreeable leather fragrance, as it’s not harsh, but rather tied to citrus via bergamot and sweetness (probably the musk), and remains so into the dry down. The saffron is also noteworthy. The blend is solid and it’s very easy to wear in that respect, but it’s certainly difficult to justify it standing out enough in a world of interesting leathers, and I’m not even a big leather fan.
Overall, it doesn’t strike me as a very deep or complicated composition, and performance-wise, it’s not very impressive. The initial burst of projection dies down within an hour, and it fades to practically a skin scent within 3 hours. So it’s a tough sell at its retail cost of $250 for 75ml, but a very pleasant nonetheless, and one I’d consider buying at a third of the retail price, perhaps.

This is more of a spiced geranium-vetiver; closer to Dignified by House of Sillage (also has cardamon, saffron, agar wood, and vetiver) than any existing leather, let alone “wild” which the name and picture suggest… A huge led down 🙁
Although without such expectation, this would be a very lovely and seductive fragrance; when it dries down, the geranium-cumin creates a semi-sweaty skin effect (not funky like you just got out of the gym, but like 5 minutes into the workout), slightly tart and salty, has a “man’s body” feel to it; masculine with some floral edge, somewhat majestic and proud like the cheetah on the bottle!

  46. :

I was enamored from the first whiff! But wished the magic could have lasted longer. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent fragrance, it just delivers everything it has right from the get go. There is a brightness brought on by the bergamot and sat geranium. The saffron, cumin and cardamom add a cooking/edible spiciness, and underneath it all, an animalic leather mixed with creamy woods and patchouli. I would be prepared to apply small amounts throughout the day. I’m on the fence with this one, but I like it quite a bit! Thumbs up.

I’d received a sample of this, and had put off trying it while waiting for the mood of experiencing something gritty, raw, and feral to hit me.
It was a bit akin to expecting Shaka Zulu, and instead you get a production of Cats.
All the listed notes are evident, but they’re really clean versions of themselves. Where I was expecting a sweatier cumin there’s just a hint of its roasted earthiness. The saffron keeps the spices on the dry side, and seems to work in tandem with the warm musk, rather than competing with it.
This IS nice, but not the walk on the Wild Side I’d braced for.

  50. :

If this is supposed to suggest the rugged, sun-scorched plains of the Savannah, then it would have to be from within the plush comfort of a luxury jeep with shiny leather seats and a scent stick dangling from the rear view mirror.
“African Leather” has none of the dirty, animalic qualities I was expecting from the brief. Instead it smells exceptionally fresh, sweet and aromatic, with a tingly spiciness that vaguely alludes to a dry desert heat, but not quite.
The opening is a juicy, vibrant blast of clean cardamom, citrus and geranium. There is a definite rose wood vibe for me; polished, peppery and slightly medicinal, with a cinnamon-like sweetness. In ways it is similar to Chanel “Egoiste” and “Pallisandre d’Or”.
The base is not that deep, rich, raw-hide leather you might be expecting; It’s rather clean and synthetic, with a slight tanginess that I associate with labdanum. As the fragrance wears on, the caraway imparts whisps of dusky spice, that hints to a more woody, powder-less version of Tauer’s “L’air du Desert Morocain”.
Performance from a tiny spray on the wrist was moderate, but I can imagine this becoming cloying if over-applied, as it is quite sweet. I would definitely wear it, for that fizzy cardamom opening alone.

The early focus of African Leather is a beautiful and effervescent spice laced saffron, with cardamom providing a little earthy soapy background and solidity to what otherwise might be too ethereal and flighty. During the heart a supple leather enters bringing some tangy umber tinged saturation to the composition. The drydown follows with the leather getting a little more polite and refined (read handbag interior) with a little dustiness from woods and a western oud accord, it just keeps going and going in this vein not changing but attenuating over time.
The whole thing starts out promising, the saffron and cardamom evocative of the African savannah, I was really looking forward to see what was coming next, but rather than delivering the promised excitement of fur and sweat the drydown actually feels a little flat. It could do with a little character from the listed cumin which goes completely under the radar, or from animatic musks which would fit the brief, with a little bit of big cat snarl.
African Leather for me anyway feels too polished and restrained, ultimately not reaching the evocative animalic potential of the brief. Of course if you look at it from the perspective of golden tinged soft leather goods, it’s quite satisfying. So my recommendation would be to ignore any expectations the back story builds and try it on its own merits. On another note, for the price point, really it does not deliver the goods. Nice, but underwhelming.
